Abstract

For the development of charged particle detectors based on straw tubes operating in vacuum, a special measurement technique is required for the evaluation of their mechanical properties. A summary of the known equations that govern straw behavior under internal pressure is provided, and a new experimental method of a strained pressurized straw tube study is presented in this paper. The Poisson’s ratio of the straw wall, which defines the stability conditions of a built-in tube, was measured for the NA62 spectrometer straw, and its minimum pre-tension was estimated.

Abstract

The decay $K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$, with a very precisely predicted branching ratio of less than $10^{-10}$, is among the best processes to reveal indirect effects of new physics. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to study the $K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$ decay and to measure its branching ratio using a decay-in-flight technique. NA62 took data in 2016, 2017 and 2018, reaching the sensitivity of the Standard Model for the $K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$ decay by the analysis of the 2016 and 2017 data, and providing the most precise measurement of the branching ratio to date by the analysis of the 2018 data. This measurement is also used to set limits on BR($K^+\to\pi^+X$), where $X$ is a scalar or pseudo-scalar particle. The final result of the BR($K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar{\nu}$) measurement and its interpretation in terms of the $K^+\to\pi^+ X$ decay from the analysis of the full 2016-2018 data set is presented, and future plans and prospects are reviewed.

Abstract

Searches for the lepton number violating $K^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{-} \mu^{+} e^{+}$ decay and the lepton flavour violating $K^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+} \mu^{-} e^{+}$ and $\pi^{0} \rightarrow \mu^{-} e^{+}$ decays are reported using data collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in $2017$-$2018$. No evidence for these decays is found and upper limits of the branching ratios are obtained at 90% confidence level: $\mathcal{B}(K^{+}\rightarrow\pi^{-}\mu^{+}e^{+})

Abstract

NICA is an international project accelerator collider complex under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. The facility is aimed at providing collider experiments with heavy ions up to gold in the center of mass energy from 4 to 11 GeV/u and an average luminosity up to 1 $\times\, 10^{27}$ cm $^\mathbf {-2}$ s $^\mathbf {-1}$ for Au $^{79+}$ . Collision experiments with polarized deuterons and protons are also foreseen. The facility includes two injector chains, a new superconducting booster synchrotron, the existing 6 AGeV superconducting synchrotron Nuclotron, and a new superconducting collider consisting of two rings, each 503 m in circumference. The planned FAIR synchrotron SIS100 has to deliver high-intensity beams for the FAIR project at GSI, Darmstadt. This machine will use fast-cycling 4 T/s magnets with a magnetic field up to 2 T. The NICA booster synchrotron, the NICA collider, and the heavy ion synchrotron SIS100 are based on iron-dominated window frame-type magnets with a hollow superconductor winding analogous to the Nuclotron magnet. Progress in the manufacturing and testing of the NICA magnets and the SIS100 superconducting magnets is presented.

Abstract

The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) is under construction to investigate heavy ion collisions at the NICA collider in the energy range s NN = 4 − 11 GeV . The MPD physics purpose is to get a better understanding of the QCD matter under extreme conditions of high baryonic density by studying collective phenomena, Λ polarization, dilepton yields, multi-strange hyperons and hypernuclei production. The MPD construction is progressing in accordance with the schedule.

Abstract

In the article (Part I) the necessity of application of end-to-end quantum technologies of intelligent computing in problems of structure elements control of complex experimental accelerator complex NICA is analyzed. Given a description of possible unforeseen situations, their classification is given to include adjustments to the decision-making application of production rules, logic knowledge bases of intelligent control systems based on emerging information risk increment. In the second part (Part II) the proposed two-level intelligent control system, a physical experimental setup of the NICA complex, in which the lower Executive level is a traditional control system based on expert control using the Tango control system Controls, while the upper (intelligent) level control actions are generated using the methods of quantum end-to-end IT design quantum fuzzy controller. Part II presents the QSCIT (Quantum Soft Computational Intelligence Toolkit), based on soft and quantum computing, to design robust knowledge bases in self-organizing intelligent control systems.

Abstract

A search for the $K^+ \to \pi^+ X$ decay, where $X$ is a long-lived feebly interacting particle, is performed through an interpretation of the $K^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar\nu$ analysis of data collected in 2017 by the NA62 experiment at CERN. Two ranges of $X$ masses, $0-110$ MeV/$c^2$ and $154-260$ MeV/$c^2$, and lifetimes above 100 ps are considered. The limits set on the branching ratio, BR($K^+ \to \pi^+ X$), are competitive with previously reported searches in the first mass range, and improve on current limits in the second mass range by more than an order of magnitude. Abstract

Journal of high energy physics 02(2), 201 (2021). doi:10.1007/JHEP02(2021)201, The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS reports a study of a sample of $4 \times10^{9}$ tagged $\pi^0$ mesons from $K^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0 (\gamma)$, searching for the decay of the $\pi^0$ to invisible particles. No signal is observed in excess of the expected background fluctuations. An upper limit of $4.4 \times10^{-9}$ is set on the branching ratio at 90% confidence level, improving on previous results by a factor of 60. This result can also be interpreted as a model-independent upper limit on the branching ratio for the decay $K^+ \to \pi^+ X$, where $X$ is a particle escaping detection with mass in the range 0.110-0.155 GeV$/c^2$ and rest lifetime greater than 100 ps. Model-dependent upper limits are obtained assuming $X$ to be an axion-like particle with dominant fermion couplings or a dark scalar mixing with the Standard Model Higgs boson., Published by SISSA, [Trieste]

Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K->pi0e+e-decay from an exposure of 1.7x10^11 charged kaon decays recorded in 2003-2004. A sample of 4919candidates with 4.9% background contamination allows the determination of the branching ratioin the full kinematic region. The study of the kinematic space shows evidence for a structuredependent contribution in agreement with predictions based on chiral perturbation theory. Several P- and CP-violating asymmetries are also evaluated. The most precise measurement of the charged kaon semi-leptonic form factors obtained by NA48/2 with 4.4 million Ke3 and 2.3 million Km3 events collected in 2004 will also be presented.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment reports the branching ratio measurement $$ \mathrm{BR}\left({K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu}\right)=\left({10.6}_{-3.4}^{+4.0}\left|{}_{\mathrm{stat}}\right.\pm {0.9}_{\mathrm{syst}}\right)\times {10}^{-11} $$ BR K + → π + ν ν ¯ = 10.6 − 3.4 + 4.0 stat ± 0.9 syst × 10 − 11 at 68% CL, based on the observation of 20 signal candidates with an expected background of 7.0 events from the total data sample collected at the CERN SPS during 2016–2018. This provides evidence for the very rare K+→$$ {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ π + ν ν ¯ decay, observed with a significance of 3.4σ. The experiment achieves a single event sensitivity of (0.839 ± 0.054) × 10−11, corresponding to 10.0 events assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of (8.4 ± 1.0) × 10−11. This measurement is also used to set limits on BR(K+→ π+X), where X is a scalar or pseudo-scalar particle. Details are given of the analysis of the 2018 data sample, which corresponds to about 80% of the total data sample.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment reports an investigation of the $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ K + → π + ν ν ¯ mode from a sample of K+ decays collected in 2017 at the CERN SPS. The experiment has achieved a single event sensitivity of (0.389 ± 0.024) × 10−10, corresponding to 2.2 events assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of (8.4 ± 1.0) × 10−11. Two signal candidates are observed with an expected background of 1.5 events. Combined with the result of a similar analysis conducted by NA62 on a smaller data set recorded in 2016, the collaboration now reports an upper limit of 1.78 × 10−10 for the $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ K + → π + ν ν ¯ branching ratio at 90% CL. This, together with the corresponding 68% CL measurement of ($$ {0.48}_{-0.48}^{+0.72} $$ 0.48 − 0.48 + 0.72 ) × 10−10, are currently the most precise results worldwide, and are able to constrain some New Physics models that predict large enhancements still allowed by previous measurements.

The new accelerator complex NICA (Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility) is under construction at JINR (Dubna, Russia). The main physics goal of the NICA project is the experimental exploration of the properties of nuclear matter under extreme condition. The MPD experiment is foreseen for study heavy-ion collisions at the NICA collider. The current status of the NICA project is presented.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS is designed to conduct precision tests of the Standard Model by studying rare decays of charged kaons. NA62 took data in 2016-2018 and collected a large sample of charged kaon decays into final states with multiple charged particles. The sensitivity to a range of lepton flavour and lepton number violating kaon decays provided by this data set is improved over the previously reported measurements. Results from the searches of $K^+→ π^-l^+l^+$ decays with a partial NA62 data sample are presented.

Actual problems on studying the phase QCD diagram in current and planned experiments are discussed. The need for a systematic study of states of the hadronic matter in regions of high baryon density is emphasized. The opportunities opened by experiments at the NICA complex are considered.

Abstract

Nuclotron-based ion collider facility (NICA) is an international project-accelerator collider complex under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. The facility is aimed at providing collider experiments with heavy ions up to gold in the center of mass energy from 4 to 11 GeV/u and an average luminosity up to 1·1027 cm−2·s−1 for Au79+. Collision experiments with polarized deuterons and protons are also foreseen. The facility includes two injector chains, a new superconducting booster synchrotron, the existing 6 AGeV superconducting synchrotron Nuclotron, and a new superconducting collider consisting of two rings, each 503 m in circumference. The planned FAIR synchrotron SIS100 has to deliver high intensity beams for the FAIR project at GSI, Darmstadt. This machine will use fast-cycling 4 T/s magnets with a magnetic field up to 2 T. The NICA booster synchrotron, the NICA collider, and the heavy ion synchrotron SIS100 are based on iron-dominated “window frame”—type magnets with a hollow superconductor winding analogous to the Nuclotron magnet. The status on the manufacturing and testing of the NICA magnets and the SIS100 superconducting quadrupole and corrector magnets are discussed.

Abstract

In the past years, drift chambers with thin-wall tubes (straws) operating in high vacuum ( ∼ 10−5 mb) has become to be used in experimental studies of rare decays. Any drift tube of the operating chamber may suffer a mechanical or electrical damage and a subsequent leak. The complete failure of the tube is not excluded either. To protect the chambers against the above damage, we have developed and tested a relatively simple protection system based on uniquely designed energy-independent devices. If air-tightness is broken and gas starts leaking from the tube into the vacuum, they automatically cut off the gas flow on both ends of the damaged tube and disconnect it from the gas supply.

The heavy ion program includes a study of collective phenomena, dilepton, hyperon and hypernuclei production under extreme conditions of highest baryonic density. This program will be performed at a fixed target experiment BM@N and with MPD detector at the NICA collider.

Abstract

The project of Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) that is under development at JINR (Dubna) is presented. The general goals of the project are experimental studies of both hot and dense baryonic matter and spin physics (in collisions of polarized protons and deuterons). The first program requires providing of heavy ion collisions in the energy range of $$\sqrt {{s_{NN}}} $$ = 4–11 Gev at average luminosity of L = 1 × 1027 cm−2 s−1 for 197Au79+ nuclei. The polarized beams mode is proposed to be used in energy range of $$\sqrt {{s_{NN}}} $$ = 12–27 Gev (protons at luminosity of L ≥ 1 × 1030 cm−2 s−1. The report contains description of the facility scheme and its characteristics in heavy ion operation mode. The Collider will be equipped with two detectors—MultiPurpose Detector (MPD), which is in an active stage of construction, and Spin Physics Detector (SPD) that is in the stage of conceptual design. Fixed target experiment “Baryonic matter at Nuclotron” (BM@N) will be performed in very beginning of the project. The wide program of applied researches at NICA facility is being developed as well.

Abstract

A device for fabricating thin-wall (straw) drift tubes using polyethylene terephthalate film 36 μm thick by ultrasonic welding is described together with the technique for controlling their quality. The joint width amounts to 0.4–1.0 mm. The joint breaking strength is 31.9 kg/mm2. The argon leakage from a tube of volume 188.6 cm3 under a pressure gradient of 1.0 atm does not exceed 0.3 × 10–3 cm3/min, which is mainly related to the absence of metallization in the joint vicinity. The high strength, the low tensile creep due to the absence of glued layers, the small value of gas leakage makes the new tubes capable of reliable and long-term operation in vacuum, which is confirmed by the operation of 7168 straw tubes for two years in the NA62 experiment.

Abstract

The NICA (Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility) project is under realization at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna). The main goal of the project is a study of hot and dense strongly interacting matter in heavy ion collisions (up to Au) in the energy range up to s N N = 11 GeV . Two modes of operation are foreseen, collider and extracted beam operations, with two detectors: MPD and BM@N. In the Au + Au collider mode the expected average luminosity is L = 10 27 cm − 2 s − 1 . The proposed experimental program allows one to search for possible manifestations of the phase transitions and critical phenomena.

Abstract

The NICA (Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility) is the new international research facility under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna. The main targets of the facility are the following: 1) study of hot and dense baryonic matter at the energy range of the maximum baryonic density; 2) investigation of nucleon spin structure and polarization phenomena; 3) development of JINR accelerator facility for high energy physics research based on the new collider of relativistic ions from protons to gold and polarized protons and deuterons as well with the maximum collision energy of sqrt(sNN) ~11GeV (Au79+ +Au79+) and ~ 27 GeV (p+p). An average luminosity of the collider is expected at the level of 1027 cm-2 s-1 for Au (79+) and 1032 cm-2 s-1 for polarized protons at 27 GeV. Two collider detector setups MPD and SPD are under design and construction. The setup BM@N (Baryonic Matter at Nuclotron) was commissioned for data taken at the existing Nuclotron beam fixed target area. The MPD construction process is progressing well. The essential step to the SPD project was made in 2018.

Abstract

The results of a search for π decays to a photon and an invisible massive dark photon at the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS are reported. From a total of 4.12 × 10 tagged π mesons, no signal is observed. Assuming a kinetic-mixing interaction, limits are set on the dark photon coupling to the ordinary photon as a function of the dark photon mass, improving on previous searches in the mass range 60–110 MeV/c. The present results are interpreted in terms of an upper limit of the branching ratio of the electro-weak decay π→ γνν¯ , improving the current limit by more than three orders of magnitude.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN reports a search for the lepton number violating decays K+ -> pi(-)e(+)e(+) and K+ -> pi(-)mu(+)mu(+) using a data sample collected in 2017. No signals are observed, and upper limits on the branching fractions of these decays of 2.2 x 10(-10) and 4.2 x 10(-11) are obtained, respectively, at 90% confidence level. These upper limits improve on previously reported measurements by factors of 3 and 2, respectively., It is a pleasure to express our appreciation to the staff of the CERN laboratory and the technical staffs of the participating laboratories and universities for their efforts in the operation of the experiment and data processing. Abstract

The decay $K^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+}\nu\overline{\nu}$ has a very precisely predicted branching ratio ($\sim 8\times 10^{-11}$) and it is one of the best candidates to reveal indirect effects of new physics. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of the $K^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+}\nu\overline{\nu}$ with a decay-in-flight technique, novel for this channel. NA62 has taken data firstly in 2016 with the aim to reach the SM sensitivity. It has then collected 10 times more statistics in 2017 and a similar amount of data is expected from the 2018 run. The preliminary result on the full 2016 data set and the prospects for future developments are presented here.

Abstract

For the development of charged particle detectors based on straw tubes operating in vacuum, a special measurement technique is required for the evaluation of their mechanical properties. A summary of the known equations that govern straw behavior under internal pressure is provided, and a new experimental method of a strained pressurized straw tube study is presented in this paper. The Poisson's ratio of the straw wall, which defines the stability conditions of a built-in tube, is measured for the NA62 spectrometer straw, and its minimum pre-tension is estimated., 20 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

There are strong experimental and theoretical evidences that in collisions of heavy ions at relativistic energies nuclear matter undergoes a phase transition to the deconfined state—Quark Gluon Plasma. The caused energy region of such transition was not found at high energy at SPS and RHIC and search for this energy is shifted to lower energies, which will be covered by the future NICA (Dubna), FAIR (Darmstadt) facilities and BES II at RHIC. Fixed target and collider experiments at the NICA facility will work at the energy range from a few AGeV up to $$\sqrt {\;{S_{NN}}} \; = \;11\;GeV$$ GeV and will study the most interesting area on the nuclear matter phase diagram. The most remarkable results were observed in the study of collective phenomena occurring in the early stage of nuclear collisions. Investigation of the collective flow will provide information on Equation of State (EoS) for nuclear matter. Study of the Event-by-Event fluctuations and correlations can give us signals of critical behavior of the system. Femtoscopy analysis provides the space-time history of the collisions. Also, it was found that baryon stopping power revealing itself as a “wiggle” in excitation function of curvature of the (net)proton rapidity spectrum relates to the order of the phase transition. The available observations of an enhancement of dilepton rates at low invariant masses may serve as a signal of the chiral symmetry restoration in hot and dense matter. Due to this fact, measurements of the dilepton spectra are considered to be an important part of the NICA physics program. The study of strange particles and hypernuclei production gives additional information on the EoS and “strange” axis of the QCD phase diagram. In this paper a feasibility of the considered investigations is shown by the detailed Monte Carlo simulations applied to the planned experiments (BM@N, MPD) at NICA.

Abstract

This review summarizes the kaon experimental results obtained in the last 15 years on the basis of data collected on the SPS in CERN with a participance of JINR physicists. These results contribute essentially into the Standard Model checks and search for its extension, fundamental symmetry violations and low energy strong interactions theory development. A progress in the experimental technique and prospects for the future results are also discussed.

Abstract

A measurement of the form factors of charged kaon semileptonic decays is presented, based on $4.4 \times 10^6$ $K^\pm \to \pi^0 e^\pm \nu_e$ ($K^\pm_{e3}$) and $2.3 \times 10^6$ $K^\pm \to \pi^0 \mu^\pm \nu_{\mu}$ ($K^\pm_{\mu3}$) decays collected in 2004 by the NA48/2 experiment. The results are obtained with improved precision as compared to earlier measurements. The combination of measurements in the $K^\pm_{e3}$ and $K^\pm_{\mu3}$ modes is also presented., Comment: 20 pages , 9 figures, 5 tables

Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN collected a very large sample of charged kaon decays into multiple final states. These data allow measurements related to QCD. We obtained our final measurement of the charged kaon semileptonic decays form factors based on 4.28 million Ke3 and 2.91 million Kμ3 selected decays, with the smallest uncertainty for Ke3 and a competitive result for Kμ3 and leading to the most precise combined Kl3 result coming from the kaon sector that reduces the form factor uncertainty of/Vus/. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure the branching ratio of the K+ → π+νν decay with 10% precision. K → πνν is one of the theoretically cleanest meson decay where to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. NA62 took data in 2015-2017; the analysis of a partial data set allows to reach the Standard Model sensitivity. The status of the experiments will be presented.

Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment collected data in 2003 and 2004 with the main purpose to study direct CP violation in charged kaons decaying in three pions. Thanks to the huge statistics collected, other studies are also possible. In this paper two recent results, in the framework of QCD studies, are reported: the measurement of the K ± → π 0 e ± ν Form Factors and the first observation of the rare decay K ± → π ± π 0 e + e − .

Abstract

The design of the prototype detector produced for the NA62 experiment by the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research is described. This detector is based on thin-walled drift tubes (straws) and is intended for operation in vacuum. The resolution and efficiency of the drift tubes for this prototype detector have been measured on the CERN SPS beams with different front-end electronic systems, gas mixtures, and beam rates. Recommendations for the full-scale detector design are formulated.

Abstract

The Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) project is under active realization at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna). The main goal of the project is experimental study of baryon rich QCD matter in heavy ion (up to Au) collisions at centre-of-mass energies up to 11 GeV per nucleon. Two modes of the operation is foreseen, collider mode and extracted beams, with the two detectors, MPD and BM{\at}N. In the collider mode the average luminosity is $L = 10^{27} cm^{-2} s^{-1}$ for Au(79+). Extracted beams of various nuclei species with maximum momenta 13 GeV/c (for protons) will be available. The NICA project also foresees a study of spin physics with the detector SPD with extracted and colliding beams of polarized deuterons and protons at centre-of-mass energies up to 27 GeV (for protons). The NICA experimental program allows to search for possible signs of the phase transitions and critical phenomena as well as to shed light on the problem of nucleon spin structure. Hereafter, feasibility studies of the observables, which are most sensitive to such phenomena, are presented.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment recorded a large sample of K+→μ+νμ decays in 2007. A peak search has been performed in the reconstructed missing mass spectrum. In the absence of a signal, limits in the range 2×10−6 to 10−5 have been set on the squared mixing matrix element |Uμ4|2 between muon and heavy neutrino states, for heavy neutrino masses in the range 300–375 MeV/ c2 . The result extends the range of masses for which upper limits have been set on the value of |Uμ4|2 in previous production search experiments.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at CERN collected a large sample of charged kaon decays with a highly efficient trigger for decays into electrons in 2007. The kaon beam represents a source of tagged neutral pion decays in vacuum. A measurement of the electromagnetic transition form factor slope of the neutral pion in the time-like region from ∼1 million fully reconstructed π 0 Dalitz decay is presented. The limits on dark photon production in π 0 decays from the earlier kaon experiment at CERN, NA48/2, are also reported.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment collected a large sample of charged kaon decays in 2007 with a highly efficient trigger for decays into electrons. A measurement of the $\pi^0$ electromagnetic transition form factor slope parameter from $1.11\times10^{6}$ fully reconstructed $K^\pm \to \pi^\pm \pi^0_D, \pi^0_D \to e^+ e^-\gamma$ events is reported. The measured value $a = (3.68 \pm 0.57)\times10^{-2}$ is in good agreement with theoretical expectations and previous measurements, and represents the most precise experimental determination of the slope in the time-like momentum transfer region., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures; Revised version accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

Abstract

A study of the dynamics of the rare decay K ± → π ± γ γ has been performed on a sample of 232 decay candidates, with an estimated background of 17.4 ± 1.1 events, collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2007. The results are combined with those from a measurement conducted by the NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN. The combined model-independent branching ratio in the kinematic range z = ( m γ γ / m K ) 2 > 0.2 is B MI ( z > 0.2 ) = ( 0.965 ± 0.063 ) × 10 − 6 , and the combined branching ratio in the full kinematic range assuming a Chiral Perturbation Theory description is B ( K π γ γ ) = ( 1.003 ± 0.056 ) × 10 − 6 . A detailed comparison of the results with the previous measurements is performed.

Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN collected two data samples with minimum bias trigger conditions in 2003 and 2004. A measurement of the rate and dynamic properties of the rare decay K ± → π ± γ γ from these data sets based on 149 decay candidates with an estimated background of 15.5 ± 0.7 events is reported. The model-independent branching ratio in the kinematic range z = ( m γ γ / m K ) 2 > 0.2 is measured to be B MI ( z > 0.2 ) = ( 0.877 ± 0.089 ) × 10 − 6 , and the branching ratio in the full kinematic range assuming a particular Chiral Perturbation Theory description to be B ( K π γ γ ) = ( 0.910 ± 0.075 ) × 10 − 6 .

New scientific program is proposed at Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna aimed a study of hot and dense baryonic matter in the wide energy region from 2 GeV/amu to √s NN = 11 GeV, and investigation of nucleon spin structure with polarized protons and deuterons maximum energy in the c.m. 27 GeV (for protons). To realize this program the development of JINR accelerator facility in high energy physics has started. This facility is based on the existing superconducting synchrotron—Nuclotron. The program foresees both experiments at the beams extracted from the Nuclotron, and construction of ion collider—the Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility (NICA).

Abstract

Scientific program of NICA (Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility) is now under realization phase at JINR (Dubna). The main goal of the program is an experimental study of hot and dense strongly interacting matter in heavy ion collisions at nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energies of 4–11 GeV and at average luminosity of 10 27 cm − 2 s − 1 for Au ( 79 + ) in the collider mode. In parallel, fixed target experiments at the upgraded JINR superconducting synchrotron Nuclotron are carried out with the extracted beams of various nuclei species up to gold with the momenta up to 13 GeV/c for protons. The program also foresees a study of spin physics with extracted and colliding beams of polarized deuterons and protons at the centre-of-mass energies up to 26 GeV for proton collisions. The proposed program allows to search for possible signs of the mixed phase and critical endpoint, and to shed more light on the problem of nucleon spin structure. General design and construction status of the complex is presented.

Abstract

From the 2002 data taking with a neutral kaon beam extracted from the CERN-SPS, the NA48/1 experiment observed 97 Ξ 0 → Σ + μ − ν ¯ μ candidates with a background contamination of 30.8 ± 4.2 events. From this sample, the BR ( Ξ 0 → Σ + μ − ν ¯ μ ) is measured to be ( 2.17 ± 0.32 stat ± 0.17 syst ) × 10 − 6 .

Abstract

The $K^+\rightarrow \pi^+ \nu \bar \nu$ decay is one of the theoretically cleanest meson decay where to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. The NA62 experiment at CERN is designed to measure the branching ratio (BR) of this decay with 10\% precision. NA62 has been successfully launched in October 2014, took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015 reaching the final designed beam intensity. The NA62 experimental setup is illustrated and quality of data acquired in view of the final measurement is reported. Abstract

A search for the decay K S → π 0 γγ has been made using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. Using data collected in 1999 during a 40-hour run with a high-intensity K S beam, an upper limit for the branching ratio BR ( K S → π 0 γγ , z ⩾0.2) −7 has been obtained at 90% confidence level, where z = m γγ 2 / m K 0 2 .

Abstract

The semi-leptonic decay of the neutral K meson $K^{0}_{L} \to \pi^{\pm}e^{\mp}\nu (K_{e3})$, was used to study the strangeness-changing weak interaction of hadrons. A sample of 5.6 million reconstructed events recorded by the NA48 experiment was used to measure the Dalitz plot density. Admitting all possible Lorentz-covariant couplings, the form factors for vector $(f_{+}(q^{2}))$, scalar $(f_{S})$ and tensor $(f_{T})$ interactions were measured. The linear slope of the vector form factor $\lambda_{+} = 0.0284 \pm 0.0007 \pm 0.0013$ and values for the ratios $|f_{S}/f_{+}(0)|=0.015^{+0.007}_{-0.010} \pm 0.012$ and $|f_{T}/f_{+}(0)|=0.05^{+0.03}_{-0.04} \pm 0.03$ were obtained. The values for $f_{S}$ and for $f_{T}$ are consistent with zero. Assuming only vector-axial vector couplings, $\lambda_{+} = 0.02888 \pm 0.0004 \pm 0.0011$ and a good fit consistent with pure V-A couplings were obtained. Alternatively a fit to a dipole form factor yields a pole mass of $M = 859 \pm 18$ MeV, consistent with the $K^{*}(892)$ mass. Abstract

In a preliminary version of the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS, in which an iron-scintillator sandwich calorimeter was used as a photon detector, the ratio of K L → πμνγ and K L → πμν decays was measured. The branching ratio BR(K L →πμνγ, E γ ∗ ≥30 MeV )/(K L → πμν ) is found to be (2.08±0.17 +0.16 −0.21 )×10 −3 , where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The result is in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Abstract

The NA62 low mass spectrometer consists of 7000 straw tubes operating in vacuum. The front-end electronics is directly mounted on the detector and connected by a flexible PCB. The front-end board provides the amplification, shaping, discrimination and time measurements of the analogue signals from 16 channels. After digitisation the data is sent to a VME 9U read-out board. The data, once matched with the trigger, is sent to the next step and used by the trigger level 1 algorithm. The front-end and read-out systems of the detector will be presented along with the first results of the detector performances.

Abstract

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN collected a large sample of charged kaon decays into final states with multiple charged particles in 2003-2004. An upper limit of $8.6 \times 10^{-11}$ at 90~$\%$~CL is set on the branching ratio of the lepton number violating decay $K^\pm \rightarrow \pi^{\mp} \mu^{\pm} \mu^{\pm}$. Searches for two-body resonances like heavy neutral leptons and inflatons in the $K^\pm \rightarrow \pi \mu \mu$ decays in the accessible range of masses and lifetimes are also presented.

Abstract

A sample of more than one million K±→π+π−e±ν ( Ke4 ) decay candidates with less than one percent background contamination has been collected by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2003–2004, allowing a detailed study of the decay properties. The branching ratio, inclusive of Ke4γ decays, is measured to be BR(Ke4)=(4.257±0.016exp±0.031ext)×10−5 with a total relative error of 0.8% . This measurement complements the study of S- and P-wave hadronic form factors by assigning absolute values to the relative hadronic form factors obtained earlier in a simultaneous analysis of the ππ scattering lengths conducted on the same data sample. The overall form factor normalization fs=5.705±0.017exp±0.031ext is obtained with a total relative precision of 0.6% .
