Wireless ECG body sensor Savvy is a feasible solution for reliable and accurate long-term heart rhythm monitoring. However, there were no studies dealing with usability of this sensor in field testing. Accordingly, the aim of the study is to evaluate the quality of the ECG signal measured with wearable wireless ECG body sensor when used in field test settings and to determine how different types of sensor fixation affects the quality of the ECG signal during sub-maximal and maximal running settings. Twenty-three participants, 10 females and 13 males, were included in the study (20.56 ± 1.19 years). All subjects performed shuttle run (SR), Cooper 2400 m (C), and 100 m sprint test (S), once wearing the sensor attached to self-adhesive skin electrodes, additionally fixed with self-adhesive tapes, and secondly with the sensor attached to Polar belt and strapped around the chest. The aim of this paper was to investigate and compare the effects of two iso-energetic hypo-caloric ketogenic hyper-ketonemic and non-ketogenic low carbohydrate high fat high cholesterol diets on body-composition, muscle strength and hormonal profile in experienced resistance-trained middle-aged men.Twenty non-competitive experienced resistance-trained middle-aged men were on the supervised calorie maintenance western diet and resistance-training regimen for 4 weeks and then divided into ketogenic and non-ketogenic groups for 8 weeks period. Keto bodies (β-hydroxybutyrate) levels were measured weekly, testosterone and insulin biweekly, strength and body-composition monthly, lipid profile and blood sugar level at the beginning and at the end of the study.Both groups lost a similar amount of lean body mass and fat tissue (from F = 248.665, p 0.001 to F = 21.943, p = 0.001), but preserved maximal upper and lower body strength (from F = 1.772, p = 0.238 to F = 0.595, p = 0.577). Basal testosterone and free testosterone increased (from F = 37.267, p = 0.001 to F = 16.261, p = 0.005) and insulin levels decreased significantly in both groups (F = 27.609, p = 0.001; F = 54.256, p 0.001, respectively). In this paper, we define a new shape-based measure which evaluates how much a given shape is hexagonal. Such an introduced measure ranges through the interval (0, 1] and reaches the maximal possible value 1 if and only if the shape considered is a hexagon. The new measure is also invariant with respect to rotation, translation and scaling transformations. A number of experiments, performed on both synthetic and real image data, are shown in order to confirm theoretical observations and illustrate the behavior of the new measure. The new hexagonality measure also provides several useful side results whose theoretical properties are discussed and experimentally evaluated. As side results, we obtain a new method that computes the shape orientation as the direction which optimizes the new hexagonality measure and a new shape elongation measure which computes the elongation of a given shape as the ratio of the lengths of the longer and shorter semi-axis of the appropriate associated hexagon. Several experiments relating to three well-known image datasets, such as MPEG-7 CE-1, Swedish Leaf, and Galaxy Zoo datasets, are also provided to illustrate effectiveness and benefits of the new introduced shape measures.

Background The impact that mechanical factors might have on gait reorganization was evaluated by the relationship between muscle mechanical capacity of isolated leg muscle groups and transition speed in previous studies. However, until now there are no studies that explored the relationship between muscle mechanical properties measured in cyclic multi-joint movements and gait transition speed. Research question What is the nature of the relationship between gait transition speed and muscle mechanical capacities measured in cyclic multi-joint movements? Methods The sample included 18 physically active male adults, stratified by anthropometric dimensions. Individual walk-to-run (WRT) and run-to-walk transition speed (RWT) were determined using the standard incremental protocol. Mechanical capacities of leg muscles were assessed by linear force-velocity models obtained during treadmill locomotion and on bicycle-ergometer. Results The results revealed inverse correlation between WRT and RWT and maximal force assessed on treadmill (F0; r = -0.57 and r = -0.54, respectively), as well with F0 (r = -0.65 and r = -0.58, respectively) and maximal power (Pmax; -0.66 and -0.65, respectively) collected on bicycle-ergometer. Significance This study confirmed that mechanical muscle capacities are important physical limitation factors of transition speed, explaining over 36 % of the variance. The findings showed that a novel approach, with high biomechanical similarities with natural locomotion, revealed different results (negative correlations) in comparison to previous studies.

Background The aim was to determine the relationship between the cross-sectional area of the quadriceps femoris and strength performance in the deep and parallel barbell squat. Methods The sample included 16 university students (seven female, 24.1 ± 1.7 years). Muscle strength was expressed as external load, including the one-repetition maximum and the body mass segments involved (calculated according to Dempster’s method). The cross-sectional area of the quadriceps femoris muscles was determined using ultrasound, while leg muscle mass was measured using the Bioelectrical Impedance method. Results The cross-sectional areas of the three vastii muscles and leg muscle mass showed moderate to strong correlation with external load in both squat types (r = 0.509–0.873). The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of the ECG signal, obtained from a telemetric body-sensor device during a maximum stress test on an ergometer. Twenty-three subjects, 13 males, were included in the study (20.56±1.19 years). Two different sensor positions were verified on each subject by the concurrent use of two ECG sensors. Each subject participated in four exercise stress tests: two on a treadmill and two on a cycle ergometer. In the first test, both sensors were attached to self-adhesive skin electrodes on the body, while in the second test the sensors were additionally fixed with self-adhesive tapes. The measurements were compared on both ergometers, in terms of the ECG sensors’ positions and the methods used for the sensors’ fixation. The results showed a significant difference in the running speed that provides an assessable ECG signal between the non-fixed and the fixed sensors at position left inferior (p = 0.000), as well as between the positions left inferior and left superior in the first (p = 0.019), and in the second test (p = 0.000) on the treadmill. On the cycle ergometer the differences were significant between the positions left inferior and left superior in the first (p = 0.000), and the second test (p = 0.003), and between the tests with fixed and non-fixed sensors in the position left superior (p = 0.011). The study confirms that ECG sensors could be used for maximal exercise stress tests in laboratories, especially on a cycle ergometer, and that they present a great potential for future use of ECG sensors during physical activity.

COVID-19 disease has been a problem in today’s society, which has worldwide effects on different areas, especially on the economy; also, from a health perspective, the disease affects the daily life quality. Physical activity is one major positive factor with regard to enhancing life quality, as it can improve the whole psychological, social, and physical health conditions. Current measures such as social distancing are focused on preventing the viral spread. However, the consequences on other areas are yet to be investigated. Elderly, people with chronic diseases, obese, and others benefit largely from exercise from the perspective of improved health, and preventive measures can drastically improve daily living. In this article, we elaborate the effects of exercise on the immune system and the possible strategies that can be implemented toward greater preventive potential.

The aim of the study was to compare the effects of two different training protocols, which differ in the duration of the eccentric phase, on the one-repetition maximum (1RM), thickness and contractile properties of elbow flexors. Twenty untrained college students were randomly divided into two experimental groups, based on the training tempo: FEG (Faster Eccentric Group: 1/0/1/0) and SEG (Slower Eccentric Group: 4/0/1/0). Training intervention was a biceps bending exercise, conducted twice a week for 7 weeks. The intensity (60–70% RM), sets (3–4) and rest intervals (120 s) were held constant, while repetitions were performed until it was not possible to maintain a set duration. In the initial and final measurements, 1RM, muscle thickness and tensiomyography parameters – contraction time (Tc) and radial deformation (Dm) – were evaluated. An ANCOVA model (using baseline outcomes as covariates) was applied to determine between-group differences at post-test, while Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient was used to investigate the relationship between absolute changes in muscle thickness and Dm. Muscle strength increase was greater for SEG than for FEG (6.0 ± 1.76 vs. 3.30 ± 2.26 kg, p < 0.01). In both groups muscle thickness increased equally (FEG: 3.24 ± 2.01 vs. SEG: 3.57 ± 1.17 mm, p < 0.01), while an overall reduction in Dm was observed (FEG: 1.99 ± 1.20 vs. SEG: 2.26 ± 1.03 mm, p < 0.01). Values of Tc remained unchanged. A significant negative relationship was observed between changes in muscle thickness and Dm (r = -0.763, Adj.R² = 0.560, p < 0.01). These results indicate that the duration of the eccentric phase has no effect on muscle hypertrophy in untrained subjects, but that slower eccentric movement significantly increases 1RM.

In this paper we further develop the recent concept of multi-component shapes, which is applicable to image processing and image analysis tasks. The domain of multi-component shapes is very diverse and includes shapes that correspond to a group of objects that act together (e.g. a fish shoal), natural components of a segmented object (e.g. cells in embryonic tissues), a set of shapes corresponding to the same object appearing at different times (e.g. human gait in an image sequence), and many more. So far, there are few methods for numerically evaluating multi-component shapes. In this paper we introduce one such method: a disconnectedness measure, that naturally corresponds to multi-component shapes, and has no analogue in single-component shape measures. The new measure depends on the number of shape components, the whole shape but also the shape of its components, on the relative size of the shape’s components and their mutual position. All these are natural requirements for a “disconnectedness” multi-component shape measure. In addition, the new measure is invariant with respect to translation, rotation and scaling transformations. The measure is simple and fast to compute. The disconnectedness measure introduced here is a generic image analysis tool. It has not been developed for a specific application. As such, it can be applied to a variety of applications. Several of them are provided in the paper, as well as synthetic examples that support a better understanding of the behavior of the new measure.

Linear regression models applied on force (F) and velocity (V) data obtained from loaded multi-joint functional movement tasks have often been used to assess mechanical capacities of the tested muscles. The present study aimed to explore the properties of the F-V relationship of leg muscles exerting the maximum pulling F at a wide range of V on a standard motorized treadmill. Young and physically active male and female subjects (N=13+15) were tested on their maximum pulling F exerted horizontally while walking or running on a treadmill set to 8 different velocities (1.4-3.3m/s). Both the individual (median R=0.935) and averaged across the subjects F-V relationships (R=0.994) proved to be approximately linear and exceptionally strong, while their parameters depicting the leg muscle capacities for producing maximum F, V, and power (P; proportional to the product of F and V) were highly reliable (0.84

Conventional leg prostheses do not convey sensory information about motion or interaction with the ground to above-knee amputees, thereby reducing confidence and walking speed in the users that is associated with high mental and physical fatigue1–4. The lack of physiological feedback from the remaining extremity to the brain also contributes to the generation of phantom limb pain from the missing leg5,6. To determine whether neural sensory feedback restoration addresses these issues, we conducted a study with two transfemoral amputees, implanted with four intraneural stimulation electrodes7 in the remaining tibial nerve (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT03350061). Participants were evaluated while using a neuroprosthetic device consisting of a prosthetic leg equipped with foot and knee sensors. These sensors drive neural stimulation, which elicits sensations of knee motion and the sole of the foot touching the ground. We found that walking speed and self-reported confidence increased while mental and physical fatigue decreased for both participants during neural sensory feedback compared to the no stimulation trials. Furthermore, participants exhibited reduced phantom limb pain with neural sensory feedback. The results from these proof-of-concept cases provide the rationale for larger population studies investigating the clinical utility of neuroprostheses that restore sensory feedback. A new prosthetic leg that can transmit sensory signals via implanted electrodes is shown to restore meaningful sensory feedback that improves walking performance and lowers phantom limb pain during use in two human lower-limb amputees.

The aim of this pilot study is to find out a maximal heart rate that can be assessed with telemetric ECG body sensors during exercise stress tests. Twenty subjects were randomly divided into two experimental groups. A first group of ten subjects has been tested on a treadmill and a second group of ten subjects on a cycle ergometer. Two different types of electrodes and two different sensor positions have been used on each subject by a concurrent use of two ECG sensors. Every subject made two exercise tests on the same exercise device: in the first tests both ECG sensors are attached to self-adhesive skin electrodes on the body, while in the second test, with the same electrodes, sensors are additionally fixed with self-adhesive tapes. The obtained measurements have been compared on both exercise devices, i.e., treadmill and cycle ergometer, regarding the type of electrodes, ECG sensors' positions, and the sort of sensors fixation. The results show a significant difference between non-fixed and fixed electrodes at sensor position LI on a treadmill (p=0,05), and between non-fixed positions LI and LS (p=0,001), and fixed positions LI and LS (p=0,024) on a cycle ergometer. The heart rate has been superiorly detected on the cycle ergometer and with the ECG sensor in position LI, either with non-fixed or fixed electrodes (p=1,000).

We propose a method for computing Euclidean distance transform (EDT) in 3D images.The method utilizes voxel coverage information to increase precision of EDT.The method can be used with any vector propagation based EDT in 3D.Synthetic tests confirm significant improvement in achieved precision.Both the related binary and the existing coverage based methods are outperformed. Distance transforms (DTs) are, usually, defined on a binary image as a mapping from each background element to the distance between its centre and the centre of the closest object element. However, due to discretization effects, such DTs have limited precision, including reduced rotational and translational invariance. We show in this paper that a significant improvement in performance of Euclidean DTs can be achieved if voxel coverage values are utilized and the position of an object boundary is estimated with sub-voxel precision. We propose two algorithms of linear time complexity for estimating Euclidean DT with sub-voxel precision. The evaluation confirms that both algorithms provide 4-14 times increased accuracy compared to what is achievable from a binary object representation.

Objective. People who care about their health pay special attention of food choices, method of food preparation, as well as the amounts of food because such a diet provides a good health. The optimal diet involves intake of precise amounts of all food groups. The recommended ratio of foods in the diet is based on evidence and is available as a nutritional guide. The consequences of malnutrition are abnormal growth and development, as well as the occurrence of the disease. The objective of this paper is to point to quality of nutrition in different regions of Serbia from aspect of food groups ratio in the structure of daily meals, based on comparisons of identified and recommended average daily recommendation of each food group per capita. Methods. Relevant data were collected from The Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, analyzed by descriptive and statistical methods, and compared with recommendations given by food pyramid. The study includes years 2011, 2012 and 2013. Results. Diet quality in Serbia is unsatisfactory when it comes to distribution of certain foods in the daily meal, primarily a group of fat, sugar and sweets in significant excess, while fruits and vegetables are in deficit presence on the menu in population of Republic of Serbia. Conclusion. Based on these results, there is a clear need for population education about proper nutrition and changes in eating habits, in order to ensure increased intake of fruit and vegetables, and reducing the use of 'empty calories', solid fat and dried products in the daily menu. That would indirectly influence the reduction of disease induced by improper diet.

After the Austrian Civil Code, the reception of the aforementioned edicts is found within the Serbian Civil Code. These forms of liabilities consist of the following fundamental elements: capacity to be sued, the grounds of liability, actions causing damage or imposing danger and premises of a building which may cause damage or impose danger. By comparing the regulation of these elements in the Roman law and Serbian Civil Code, the author examines to which extent and manner the reception of Roman law took place.

Walking and running represent the two basic, fundamental patterns of human locomotion. The lowest speed at which a man spontaneously switches from walking to running is called preferred transition speed (PTS). There are a considerable number of inconsistencies regarding the importance and influence of body size and muscle factors in the phenomenon of gait transition speed, in the previous research findings. The objectives of this study were to determine: (1) the relationship between longitudinal, transversal and circular dimensions of the body and PTS; (2) the relationship between body proportions and PTS; (3) the relationship between body composition variables and PTS; (4) the predictive power of human allometry in determination of PTS. The sample comprised 59 male subjects (age 21.76 ± 1.93 years) heterogeneous in physical dimensions. We measured 15 anthropometric variables, body composition, and determined individual PTS using the standard increment protocol. Statistical analysis included Pearson correlation and Multivariate linear regression. The value of PTS in this study was 7.96 ± 0.38 km h-1. the highest correlations with PTS were recorded for variable lower leg length (r = -0.488), foot length (r = 0.418) and leg length (r = -0.410, p < 0.01). Body proportions showed higher correlations with the PTS in compare to individual anthropometric variables, and the highest correlation was observed between the proportion of the thigh length/lower leg length and PTS (r = 0.521, p < 0.01). The amount of body fat and percentage of body fat had low inverse correlation with PTS (r = -0.250, p < 0.05). Linear regression showed that 31% of the PTS variance can be explained by the variables lower leg length and foot length. Results of hierarchical regression showed that the 50.4% of the PTS variance can be explained through four body proportions. The main results of this experiment indicate that the proportions of the body are better PTS predictors in compare to the individual anthropometric variables. This means that body constitution, and especially the proportions between the leg segments and percent of the leg muscle mass, are more important PTS determinants than length of individual body segments.

The sample included 29 physically active male adults homogenized regarding their anthropometric dimensions. Isokinetic and isometric leg muscle mechanical characteristics were assessed by an isokinetic dynamometer, while individual walk-to-run (WRT) and run-to-walk transition speeds (RWT) were determined using the standard increment protocol. Introduction. Increasing energy expenditure through certain exercise is an important component of effective interventions to enhance initial weight loss and prevent weight regain. Objective. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a 16-week weight loss exercise programme on morpho-functional changes in female adults and to examine the programme effects on two subpopulations with different levels of obesity. Methods. Fifty-six middle-aged women were divided into 2 groups according to their body mass index (BMI): 25-29.9 kg/m2 - overweight (OW) and ?30 kg/m2 - obese (OB). The exercise protocol included a walking technique based on hip rotation at horizontal plane at speeds close to the preferred transition speed (PTS). At the initiation of the study and after 16 weeks of the programme, anthropometric, morphological and cardiovascular parameters of all subjects were assessed. The main effects of Group (OW and OB) and Time and the interaction effect of Group by Time were tested by time repeated measures General Linear Model (mixed between-within subjects ANOVA). Results. Mean weight loss during the programme was 10.3 kg and 20.1 kg in OW and OB, respectively. The average fat mass (FM) loss was 9.4 kg in OW and 16.9 kg in OB.
