Colorectal cancer is currently a public health concern due to its high incidence, morbidity, and mortality rates. Researchers have identified the intestinal microbiome as a crucial factor in the development of this disease. Currently, specialized literature data support the role of the microbiota in both the development of colorectal cancer and resistance to oncological therapies. Therefore, studying the composition of the gut microbiome can aid in creating risk assessment tools to identify specific populations that would benefit from tailored screening approaches. Also, manipulation of the intestinal microbiome can be useful in improving the response to chemotherapy or immunotherapy. Identifying the pathogenic mechanisms responsible for this causal link can aid in the discovery of novel treatment targets. This article will provide the latest information regarding the influence of the intestinal microbiota on the development and progression of colorectal cancer.

Mission Command is a specific component of the command and control system of military structures at all levels of leadership. Implementing the concept allows the commanders to encourage their subordinates to make quick and effective decisions. It also allows them to show their initiative and freedom of decision within the limits of the intention of the superior commander. In this article, a doctrinal-comparative introspection will be carried out to facilitate the identification of some advantages and disadvantages of using the Mission Command concept in the process of planning, leading, and evaluating operations at the tactical level. The research is based on the assumption that adapting the act of command and control to the particularities of the operation aims to maximize the effect of the action. Taking into account the aforementioned and not limiting ourselves to the principles of leadership, we can assert that this concept, which uses principles of military art and operational art, will become a tool at the disposal of future generations of military leaders to facilitate leading of forces with efficiency and effectiveness based on doctrinal foundations, within the limits of acceptable risks.

5. Comparative analysis of leptin and carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 1 plasma expression in pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis patients

Compared to the general population, patients with chronic pancreatitis have an up to 12-fold higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer. The aim of our study was the identification of potential proteomic biomarkers to contribute to the detection of pancreatic cancer among patients with chronic pancreatitis. We initially performed a proteomic screening analysis of 105 analytes on plasma pools. To validate this finding, we quantitatively determined leptin concentrations in individual plasma samples using the ELISA technique. Additionally, we explored the plasma expression of CEACAM1, an important regulator of leptin expression in various cancer cells using the same method. The preliminary semi-quantitative proteomic analysis identified leptin as the only protein with substantially higher expression in patients with pancreatic cancer compared to those with chronic pancreatitis. Subsequently, by quantitative ELISA, we determined a higher median leptin concentration in the plasma of patients with pancreatic cancer compared to those with chronic pancreatitis. The statistical significance was maintained regardless of other variables like BMI or gender. Additionally, we explored the plasma expression of CEACAM1, an important regulator of leptin expression in various cancer cells, in order to provide insights into the complex mechanisms underlying pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatits. CEACAM1 concentrations were higher in the plasma of the patients with pancreatic cancer than in those with chronic pancreatitis. However, we did not find a statistically significant correlation between leptin and CEACAM1 expression variation in the two study groups, with CEACAM1 concentration also dependent on other parameters such as BMI, gender, and serum triglyceride level. In conclusion, leptin seems to be a biomarker that can contribute to differentiate patients with pancreatic cancer from patients with chronic pancreatitis.

Aim of the study The objective of this study is to examine the impact of treatment with two simultaneous lasers on implant mucositis. Material and methods A number of 40 patients (90 implants) were included in this research. They were allocated randomly in 2 groups. Results Both variables as Pocket depth around implants (if diminished under 6 mm of depth) and the absence of clinical signs of inflammation by means the absence of measured bleeding on probing at 6 months after performing the treatment were evaluated together as parameters evaluating the success of the performed treatment, and significantly better results were observed in first group of subjects at their evaluation.

Among a multitude of functions, the façade is responsible for providing sufficient thermal insulation and supplying the building interior with enough natural light. For the latter, transparent glazed areas are essential. However, compromises in terms of the glass-to-wall ratio are often necessary since large glazed areas lead to overheating in summer and heat loss in winter. A novel type of highly insulating translucent glass brick made from annealed glass and filled with aerogel granulate was developed recently as an alternative in this regard. The bricks are not supposed to replace the transparent glass areas, but to offer a translucent alternative for part of the otherwise opaque wall areas. This paper focuses on the structural behaviour of walls composed of such aerogel-filled glass bricks. The components of such a brick and their functions are described. Moreover, two prototype systems for supporting the bricks in translucent walls are introduced – one with interlocking connections and pre-stressed wires, the other with interlocking connections and edge clamping. Both systems are analysed in finite element simulations from a structural point of view under out-of-plane loading. The resulting global deformations as well as occurring stresses in different components are analysed. Based on the findings, advantages and limitations of the different systems are highlighted and suggestions for improved alternative systems for translucent walls with insulating aerogel-filled glass bricks are made.

Medicinal plants are a valuable reservoir of novel pharmacologically active compounds. ROS and free radicals are primary contributors to oxidative stress, a condition associated with the onset of degenerative diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease, and vascular disease. In this study, we used different spectrophotometry methods to demonstrate the antioxidant properties of 6 Allium extracts: Allium fistulosum; Allium ursinum; Allium cepa: Arieș red cultivar of A. cepa, and white variety of A. cepa; Allium sativum; and Allium senescens subsp. montanum. HPLC–MS determined the chemical composition of the extracts. Among the tested extracts, the Arieș red cultivar of A. cepa stands out as having the best antioxidant activity, probably due to the high content of polyphenols and alliin (12.67 µg/mL and 3565 ng/mL, respectively). The results obtained in this study show that Allium extracts have antioxidant activity, but also free radical scavenging capabilities. Also, their interactions with cytochrome c and hemoglobin can be the basis of future studies to create treatments for oxidative stress-related diseases.

Hydrogen sulfide is present in active or extinct volcanic areas (mofettas). The habitable premises in these areas are affected by the presence of hydrogen sulfide, which, even in low concentrations, gives off a bad to unbearable smell. If the living spaces considered are closed enclosures, then a system can be designed to reduce the concentration of hydrogen sulfide. This paper presents a membrane-based way to reduce the hydrogen sulfide concentration to acceptable limits using a cellulosic derivative–propylene hollow fiber-based composite membrane module. The cellulosic derivatives considered were: carboxymethyl–cellulose (NaCMC), P1; cellulose acetate (CA), P2; methyl 2–hydroxyethyl–cellulose (MHEC), P3; and hydroxyethyl–cellulose (HEC), P4. In the permeation module, hydrogen sulfide is captured with a solution of cadmium that forms cadmium sulfide, usable as a luminescent substance. The composite membranes were characterized by SEM, EDAX, FTIR, FTIR 2D maps, thermal analysis (TG and DSC), and from the perspective of hydrogen sulfide air removal performance. To determine the process performances, the variables were as follows: the nature of the cellulosic derivative–polypropylene hollow fiber composite membrane, the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the polluted air, the flow rate of polluted air, and the pH of the cadmium nitrate solution. The pertraction efficiency was highest for the sodium carboxymethyl–cellulose (NaCMC)–polypropylene hollow fiber membrane, with a hydrogen sulfide concentration in the polluted air of 20 ppm, a polluted air flow rate (QH2S) of 50 L/min, and a pH of 2 and 4. The hydrogen sulfide flux rates, for membrane P1, fall between 0.25 × 10−7 mol·m2·s−1 for the values of QH2S = 150 L/min, CH2S = 20 ppm, and pH = 2 and 0.67 × 10−7 mol·m−2·s−1 for the values of QH2S = 50 L/min, CH2S = 60 ppm, and pH = 2. The paper proposes a simple air purification system containing hydrogen sulfide, using a module with composite cellulosic derivative–polypropylene hollow fiber membranes.

Detecting the position of a smartphone over a short range outside and inside a vehicle through its secondary radio frequency (RF) services is a difficult task, with various trials and tests employing Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and Near Field Communication (NFC) suggesting possible solutions using forthcoming services to be introduced, such as the ultra-wide band (UWB) radio or the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. This thesis addresses the modern radio location problem of inside-outside position location for a mobile RF source by proposing an empirical solution that is based on the 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.15.4 standard. For a proof-of-concept scenario involving a static vehicle with its side windows down and no passenger presence, this work derived an offline calculation based on empirical measurements demonstrating that four directive, inside-orientated sensors can be sufficient to produce a 100% successful inside-outside RF position discrimination. Furthermore, by adding four more RF directive sensors pointing towards outside, it was possible to detect on a radius of up to 5 m around the vehicle the variable location of a mobile RF source within a root mean square error (RMSE) of up to ±1.4 m outside and ±0.4 m inside the vehicle. The demonstrated experimental RF ranging is based solely on the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and the individual sensor's directivity achieved through shielding. The results rely on an RSSI fingerprinting database derived from only empirical outdoor measurements, delivering a consistent performance inside the highly RF-reflective vehicle cabin by exploiting the sensor position and directivity and suggesting that a focus on the front of each seat may avoid future human interference. Moreover, a theoretical propagation model based on Friis' transmission equation constructed on system parameters shows a high correlation with the RSSI fingerprinting experimental model, thus supporting the consistency of the empirical model. The directive RF sensors used in the experimental work were refined based on ray tracing (RT) simulation suggestions so as to display an optimal discrimination of targets on a convex open volume such as a vehicle cabin. To summarise, this EngD successfully demonstrated a 2.4 GHz RF location system based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard with direct applications in RF detection, such as the restricted entrance scenario employed in vehicle and smart infrastructure industry.

Wire arc additive manufacturing is considered to allow a reduced material consumption for structural steel components by efficiently distributing the material only where necessary. Parts produced with this technology exhibit an irregular, imperfect geometry, which influences their structural behaviour. This paper describes a dataset, which includes geometry information for point-by-point wire arc additively manufactured steel bars, force and displacement measurements from performed uniaxial tensile tests on such bars, and force and displacement values from geometrically and materially non-linear simulations of the bars with imperfect geometry. The geometry data was obtained by 3D scanning the steel bars. Moreover, a script is provided that allows processing the scanned geometry data such that it can be used to generate suitable finite element meshes for geometrically and materially non-linear analyses. The force and displacement data from the uniaxial tensile tests were collected through measurements with a load cell for the force and with the help of digital image correlation measurements for the displacements. The non-linear simulations of the experiments were conducted with the computer aided engineering software Abaqus on processed approximations of the irregular scanned geometry. The described dataset can be used for better understanding the influence of the irregular geometry on the structural behaviour of wire arc additively manufactured parts. Moreover, researchers can apply the data to validate finite element simulation models and approaches for predicting the structural behaviour of different wire arc additively manufactured parts.

Basketball and business organizations can be compared from various standpoints (organizational structure, type of teams, processes etc.). One such standpoint is regarding objective setting. By undergoing a literature review analysis on the topic of objective setting in basketball versus business organization, the author tried to answer the research question: “are there any differences in the way basketball and business organizations conduct their objective setting activities?” Considering this, the objective of this paper is to provide an insight into how objectives in basketball and business organizations are set, and if there are any similarities or differences in the way they conduct this activity. The results however, did not provide clear and sufficient information if there are any differences between how objectives are set and communicated in basketball versus business organizations. Furthermore, a simple literature review like this one cannot provide a clear answer to the research question, as the necessary information regarding objective setting in basketball organizations is, in most cases, not public or easily identifiable. Moreover, the author was not able to identify research on the topic of how exactly basketball organizations set their objectives or what criteria they take into consideration when setting these objectives. This proves the fact that topics like how basketball organization set their objectives for each season or what criteria they take into consideration when undergoing this activity could be considered relevant for a future and more detailed qualitative/ quantitative research having as target group: basketball teams that play in the Euroleague/Romanian National Basketball League.

Technological equipment in quarries that extract and deliver aggregates for different uses operates in a predetermined flow depending on the type of rocks exploited and the dimensional characteristics imposed on the final products. In this context, the interruptions in operation required to replace high-wear parts (such as the teeth of excavators and bucket loaders) must be limited as much as possible through technological solutions to increase their service life. The evolution of the wear of the teeth of the quarry equipment that come into direct contact with rocks was concretely established in the production process, in parallel with the wear values obtained by simulating the wear phenomenon in laboratory conditions, in order to validate the data collected during the operation of the machines. Preventive–repetitive maintenance within the activities of reconditioning the worn surfaces of the teeth, through the charging process by manual electric welding with covered electrodes, was applied directly to the machine, which led to the shortening of the interruptions in operation necessary to replace these spare parts.

20. Summer Discrepancies between 2 m Air Temperature and Landsat LST in Suceava City, Northeastern Romania

The widespread availability of Land Surface Temperature (LST) data from various sources presents a contemporary challenge for urban climate studies: how to efficiently compare these data with the results of traditional methods of temperature monitoring, which typically assume measurements at 2 m under sheltered conditions. In this line, the current study is based primarily on data extracted from a network of 31 points of hourly temperature monitoring at the 2 m level (Tair2m), in use between 2019 and 2021, in the city of Suceava in north-eastern Romania. These data allowed a detailed mapping for each hourly time step through multiple regression, adjusted by IDW, which was identified as the best interpolation method of Tair2m. These data were analyzed in parallel with LST data derived from Landsat imagery available in the analyzed period for 35 summer days with no or low cloud cover. The mapping results of both the Tair2m and LST data describe the main characteristics of the Suceava urban agglomeration (SvMA) heat island, which presents polynuclear features with intensities—as expressed by the temperature difference between the cores of the heat island and the surrounding rural areas—spanning during the summer noontime between 3.0 °C based on Tair2m and 7.1 °C on LST, respectively. The values of the Tair2m–LST differences were 0.68 °C on average, ranging from 5.33 to −19.17 °C, directly proportional to the imperviousness ratio (IMD) values, reaching the highest values in the local climate zones (LCZs) with a high built-up ratio (up to −19.17 °C) and the lowest (0.5 ÷ −0.5 °C) for those with bare soils, with isolated bushes and trees, with few or no buildings. The study results could serve as a tool to downscale the LST data to the level of Tair2m, which is useful for interpretation of the data derived from these commonly used tools in urban climate monitoring.

1) Background: Peripheral nerve injuries (PNI) can generate important medium- and long-term disability, as patients mostly complain about associated pain, sensibility and, or motor deficit, and even psychological manifestations. Chitosan and different nanoparticles types were previously used in several studies as treatment of peripheral nerve injuries. The present study aimed to assess the hepatic responses at oral administration of simple chitosan solution and of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles functionalized with chitosan (CMNPs) solution in an experimentally induced peripheral nerve injury. (2) Methods: Chitosan or CMNPs were oral administrated, for 21 days, to animals with peripheral nerve injury. The treated groups were compared with a control group (peripheric nerve injury without any treatment). The hepatic toxicity of administered solutions was analyzed histologically, through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and through the oxidative stress parameters, in comparison with the control group. (3) Results: Liver tissue histological evaluation showed non-significant degeneration of hepatocytes in Chitosan group and, in CMNPs group, slight periportal inflammation. TEM investigation revealed nuclear and mitochondrial polymorphism and lipid accumulation in hepatocytes in Chitosan group, and in CMNPs group, irregular nucleus profiles and increased glycogen storage in cytosol. Oxidative stress analysis showed antioxidant hepatic effect of both treatments. (4) Conclusions: Compared to control group, both treatments produced significant increases of hepatic antioxidant protection, probably induced by chitosan properties. Histological modifications of the liver were minimal for both treatment groups. TEM investigation showed unspecific alterations of the hepatocytes structure.

Since transcription factor Forkhead Box P3 (FoxP3) was identified as a specific regulatory T cell (Treg) marker, researchers have scrutinized its value as a potential novel therapeutic target or a prognostic factor in various types of cancer with inconsistent results. The present analysis was performed to assess the influence of Treg FoxP3 expression on the prognosis of primary melanoma and to evaluate the correlations with various clinicopathological prognostic factors. We analyzed all eligible patients with stage pT3 primary malignant melanomas treated in a tertiary cancer center. Immunohistochemical staining for Treg FoxP3 expression was performed on retrospectively identified paraffin blocks and subsequently correlated with the outcomes of the patients. A total of 81% of the patients presented a positive Treg FoxP3 expression, being correlated with a higher risk of lymph node metastasis, tumor relapse, and death. Moreover, positive expression was statistically associated with a shorter OS. The tumor relapse rate was estimated at 36.7%. A positive expression of Treg FoxP3 and lymph node metastasis were associated with a higher risk of death based on multivariate analysis. Treg FoxP3 expression may be used as an independent prognostic factor in patients with malignant melanoma to evaluate tumor progression and survival.

Several cases reported in the literature have confirmed the link between pulmonary aspergillosis and various malignant diseases. Furthermore, it has been observed that the correlation between carcinoid tumor and lung adenocarcinoma is quite uncommon. The etiopathogenic mechanisms underlying these correlations remain poorly defined. We present the case of a patient with three of these diseases: a lung adenocarcinoma with a lepidic pattern, a typical carcinoid, and pulmonary aspergillosis. An additional noteworthy aspect of this case pertains to the timely detection of both lung malignancies. Thus, the necessity for further investigation to ascertain the pathogenic connection among the three diseases is underscored. The ultimate objective is to enhance the prognosis of individuals diagnosed with lung cancer, which is a prevailing malignant disease on a global scale.

Study Region: Romanian territory and the Carpathian Mountains, Romania.Study focus: We provide a consistent picture of long-term changes in relevant snow cover characteristics, including phenology (timing of the snow onset and melting), snow cover duration, and frequency of snow cover and snow-free days in Romania, from 1961 to 2020, that could be relevant for understanding the regional dynamics of terrestrial water resources.New hydrological insights: The trend behaviour shows different dynamics between the elevation bands and Koeppen-Geiger climate regions of Romania, which may play a crucial role in the variability of snow water budgets and the distribution of water resources. We found systematic delays in snow onsets and earlier snow melting throughout the country. These trends are particularly prominent at mid-elevations and in the lowlands, reflecting the contribution of the intensified seasonal warming process in the last decades. We also observed widespread and significant declines in snow cover duration, snow cover day frequency, and increases in snow-free days in most climate regions of the country. The trends in snow cover parameters are elevation-dependent up to 2000 m. Above 2000 m the observed changes are visibly diminished or reversed (e.g., earlier snow onsets in the alpine areas). The long-term snow cover variability shows significant shifts in the mean of the snow cover parameters, generally clustered during the 1990 s or earlier. Relationships between the large-scale atmospheric circulation (herein expressed as NAO) and changes in seasonal temperature and precipitation have been identified.

Urban Heat Island (UHI) and Heat Waves (HWs) are very important research topics as they have a strong impact on society and their synergies are not enough understood. Urbanisation and global warming are dynamic processes that amplify the UHI intensity and the HWs, as well as their synergies. In this context, it is not a surprise to see that the number of publications tackling the linkages between UHI and HWs has constantly increased in the last decades. The development of new instruments and technologies allowed for consistent improvements in the temporal and spatial resolution of the data that boosted both the monitoring and analysis of the UHI-HW. The use of satellite remote sensing was very limited at the beginning of the analysed period and has become common practice in the last decade. Last, but not least, the interdisciplinary approaches, including physical, social, and economic aspects are more frequent and support the integrated development of the urban areas. Such changes are captured in this review including more than 400 titles, covering the period 1991–2022, aiming to foster further research on emergent climate change risks at urban scales and contextualise the future urban planning. This review provides a comprehensive, accessible and structured overview of the UHI-HW topic as a support for a better understanding of the gaps to be addressed by future research.

Abstract Four climate parameters (i.e. maximum, mean and minimum air temperature and precipitation amount) from 10 regional climate models, provided by the EURO‐CORDEX initiative, are adjusted using as reference the ROCADA gridded dataset. The adjustment was performed on a daily temporal resolution for the historical period (1971–2005), as well as for climate change scenarios based on two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). The most accurately method for bias‐correction (BC) was selected following a 2‐fold cross‐validation approach, which was performed on historical data using two methods: Quantile Mapping (QMAP) and Multivariate Bias Correction with N‐dimensional probability (MBCn). The performances of the two methods are very similar when analysing the frequency distribution of each selected variable, whereas the comparison between (1) the intervariables correlation of the adjusted datasets, and (2) the reference dataset revealed much smaller differences for the dataset adjusted with the multivariate method, hence this was used for producing the BC scenario dataset. Based on the MBCn adjusted dataset, a climate change analysis over Romania was tested at the seasonal and annual scale. Overall, for the multimodel ensemble mean, at the country level, a substantial temperature increase is reported for both scenarios and no significant trend is revealed for precipitation amount. The adjusted RCMs are provided without any restrictions via an open‐access repository in netCDF CF‐1.4‐compliant file format. The BC climate models are archived at the 0.1° spatial resolution, in the WGS‐84 coordinate system, at a daily temporal resolution.

It is well known that urban parks, especially wooden ones, cause a cooling effect on the urban climate and have a decisive role in the formation of the so-called Park Cool Island (PCI). Urban parks can help at lowering the land surface temperature (LST), and consequently mitigate the effects of the surface urban heat island (SUHI). The thermal characteristics of the Urban Park Cancicov from Bacău city are analyzed using LANDSAT-8 imagery, but also in-situ measurements for the growing season of 2022 (March to October). For the calculation of LST based on LANDSAT images, several methods have been applied among which the monowindow method has been finally used. The results showed that Cancicov Park, through its structural characteristics and its central position in a densely-built area, determines a cooling effect in an area where the SUHI intensity reaches the highest values. During the day the LST is by 4.50C lower compared to densely built areas in the surroundings for April-September, the diurnal LST exceeding 300C from May to August, while the surrounding urban LST exceeds 350C from June to August. Regarding the results from in-situ measurements, we have used the monitoring results from 2 points, one represented by the monitoring point located in the city center (“Gheorghe Vrănceanu” College) and the second one located on the eastern side of the park (“Ștefan cel Mare” College). The diurnal thermal differences between these two points rise to over 2.50C during the summer morning hours. At the nocturnal level, thermal differences are reduced from 0.75 to 10C. This study emphasizes the capacity of green areas to alleviate the UHI, providing viable information for urban planners to correctly assess climate risks and guide development management by maximizing the intensity of PCI.

Membrane materials with osmium nanoparticles have been recently reported for bulk membranes and supported composite membrane systems. In the present paper, a catalytic material based on osmium dispersed in n–decanol (nD) or n–dodecanol (nDD) is presented, which also works as an emulsion membrane. The hydrogenation of p–nitrophenol (PNP) is carried out in a reaction and separation column in which an emulsion in the acid-receiving phase is dispersed in an osmium nanodispersion in n–alcohols. The variables of the PNP conversion process and p–aminophenol (PAP) transport are as follows: the nature of the membrane alcohol, the flow regime, the pH difference between the source and receiving phases and the number of operating cycles. The conversion results are in all cases better for nD than nDD. The counter-current flow regime is superior to the co-current flow. Increasing the pH difference between the source and receiving phases amplifies the process. The number of operating cycles is limited to five, after which the regeneration of the membrane dispersion is required. The apparent catalytic rate constant (kapp) of the new catalytic material based on the emulsion membrane with the nanodispersion of osmium nanoparticles (0.1 × 10−3 s−1 for n–dodecanol and 0.9 × 10−3 s−1 for n–decanol) is lower by an order of magnitude compared to those based on adsorption on catalysts from the platinum metal group. The advantage of the tested membrane catalytic material is that it extracts p–aminophenol in the acid-receiving phase.

Background and Objectives: This paper aims to assess the role of laser therapy in periodontitis through an innovative approach involving computational prediction and advanced modeling performed through network analysis (Gaussian graphical models—GGMs) and structural equations (SEM). Materials and Methods: Forty patients, exhibiting periodontal pockets with a minimum depth of 5 mm, were randomly divided into two groups: a control group and a laser group. Four specific indicators were measured for each tooth, namely periodontal pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP), and plaque index (PI), and the mean of six measured values was recorded at five time markers (baseline, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, and 4 years). The assessment algorithm included enrollment, measurements, and differential non-surgical periodontal treatment, according to the group allocation. Scaling, root planing, and chlorhexidine 1% were conducted for the control group, and scaling, root planing and erbium, chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,CR:YSGG) laser therapy were conducted for the laser group. Results: The main results highlight that the addition of laser treatment to scaling and root planing led to notable clinical improvements, decreasing the PPD values, reducing the BOP scores, and increasing the CAL. Conclusions: Notable relationships between the specific indicators considered were highlighted by both the GGMs and by SEM, thus confirming their suitability as proxies for the success of periodontal treatment.

By means of non-resonant Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, we measure and assign the vibrational spectrum of two distinct two-dimensional lead-iodide perovskite derivatives. These two samples are selected in order to probe the effects of the organic cation on lattice dynamics. One templating cation is composed of a phenyl-substituted ammonium derivative, while the other contains a linear alkyl group. We find that modes that directly involve the organic cation are more prevalent in the phenyl-substituted derivative. Comparison of the temperature dependence of the Raman spectra reveals differences in the nature of dynamic disorder, with a strong dependence on the molecular nature of the organic moiety.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to chronic conditions with a low mortality but high disability. The multisystemic nature of these diseases can explain the appearance of some extraintestinal manifestations, including liver damage. Abnormal liver biochemical tests can be identified in approximately one third of patients with IBD and chronic liver disease in 5% of them. Among the liver diseases associated with IBD are primary sclerosing cholangitis, cholelithiasis, fatty liver disease, hepatic amyloidosis, granulomatous hepatitis, drug-induced liver injury, venous thromboembolism, primary biliary cholangitis, IgG4-related cholangiopathy, autoimmune hepatitis, liver abscesses or the reactivation of viral hepatitis. The most common disease is primary sclerosing cholangitis, a condition diagnosed especially in patients with ulcerative colitis. The progress registered in recent years in the therapeutic management of IBD has not eliminated the risk of drug-induced liver disease. Additionally, the immunosuppression encountered in these patients increases the risk of opportunistic infections, including the reactivation of viral hepatitis. Currently, one of the concerns consists of establishing an efficiency and safety profile of the use of direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA) among patients with hepatitis C and IBD. Early diagnosis and optimal treatment of liver complications can improve the prognoses of these patients.

45. An investigation into the variability of the nutrient and carbon biogeochemistry in the North Atlantic

The oceans as a whole and the North Atlantic in particular are key regulators of our planet's climate and elemental cycles. The high inherent variability in the circulation of the North Atlantic contributes to significant inter annual variability in the biogeochemical properties that can only be adequately assessed through sustained observations. This study used multiple observation platforms including ships-of-opportunity and hydrographic research cruises to quantify this variability, investigate its potential causes and evaluate the consequences on a range of scales. Between 2002 and 2017, large decoupled variability was observed in the surface concentrations of the major inorganic macronutrients(nitrate+nitrite, phosphate and silicate). In the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre(NASTG), nitrate and phosphate displayed long term increases of 0.019 μmol L-1 yr-1and 0.003 μmol L-1 yr-1 respectively, while silicate decreased throughout the study area (−0.022 to -0.109 μmol L-1 yr-1). Previous knowledge on the nitrogen limitation regime of the NASTG was experimentally confirmed. The long-term observations allowed the identification of anomalously high surface nitrate concentrations (up to 1 μmol L-1 higher)in a region in the Central North Atlantic that more than doubled new production. Throughout the study period, the North Atlantic remained an overall carbon sink. Critically, the mid-latitude region became a stronger sink since the seawater carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO2) did not follow the increasing trend in atmospheric pCO2. Over 70% of the changes in pCO2 could be explained by variations in temperature, alkalinity and surface dissolved inorganic carbon. Biological processes were important in maintaining this sink, especially since carbon overconsumption at a C:N ratio of 9.6 was observed in the spring bloom. Full-depth nutrient concentrations across a repeat transect at 24° Nin the NASTG also featured variability. Particularly important was the 2010 reversal of the usual net southwards nitrogen transport. This was due to a strong northward Florida Straits dissolved organic nitrogen transport. Events such as this one have an impact on local nutrient stoichiometry and implicitly phytoplankton production, but also on regional elemental budgets.

49. Water Quality and Associated Human Health Risk Assessment Related to Some Ions and Trace Elements in a Series of Rural Roma Communities in Transylvania, Romania

This research aims to assess the content of some ions and trace elements in water sources in 24 rural Roma communities in Transylvania in order to assess the human health risk associated with exposure to such elements and ions. To this end, eight ions (F−, Cl−, Br−, NO2−, NO3−, SO42−, PO43−, NH4+) and ten trace elements (Cr, Ni, As, Pb, Cd, Mn, Cu, Zn, Fe, and Hg) were determined in 71 water samples by ion chromatography coupled with a conductivity detector for ions and atomic absorption spectrophotometry for all trace elements. General parameters were also determined. Non-conformity (as number of samples), according to the EU Drinking Water Directive, was observed as follows: pH (7), EC (7), hardness (1), oxidizability (15), Cl− (4), NO3− (30), SO42− (6), Fe (16), Mn (14), As (3), and Ni (1 sample). The incidence of ions was Cl− (71), SO42− (70), F− (67), NO3− (65), NH4+ (21), Br− (10), PO43−, and NO2− (1 sample) and for trace elements, Mn (59), Fe (50), As (38), Ni (32), Cu (29), Zn (28), Cd (12), Cr (11), and Pb (3 samples). Hg was not detected. Non-carcinogenic (HI) values exceeded one for As in 13 Roma communities, with higher values for children than for adults. For NO3−, the HI values were >1 in 12 for adults and 14 communities for children. The carcinogenic risk (CR) for As through ingestion ranged from 0.795 to 3.50 × 10−4 for adults and from 1.215 to 5.30 × 10−4 for children. CR by dermal contact was in the range of ×10−6 both for adults and children.

50. Simultaneously Recovery of Thorium and Tungsten through Hybrid Electrolysis–Nanofiltration Processes

The recovery and recycling of metals that generate toxic ions in the environment is of particular importance, especially when these are tungsten and, in particular, thorium. The radioactive element thorium has unexpectedly accessible domestic applications (filaments of light bulbs and electronic tubes, welding electrodes, and working alloys containing aluminum and magnesium), which lead to its appearance in electrical and electronic waste from municipal waste management platforms. The current paper proposes the simultaneous recovery of waste containing tungsten and thorium from welding electrodes. Simultaneous recovery is achieved by applying a hybrid membrane electrolysis technology coupled with nanofiltration. An electrolysis cell with sulphonated polyether–ether–ketone membranes (sPEEK) and a nanofiltration module with chitosan–polypropylene membranes (C–PHF–M) are used to carry out the hybrid process. The analysis of welding electrodes led to a composition of W (tungsten) 89.4%; Th 7.1%; O2 2.5%; and Al 1.1%. Thus, the parameters of the electrolysis process were chosen according to the speciation of the three metals suggested by the superimposed Pourbaix diagrams. At a constant potential of 20.0 V and an electrolysis current of 1.0 A, the pH is varied and the possible composition of the solution in the anodic workspace is analyzed. Favorable conditions for both electrolysis and nanofiltration were obtained at pH from 6 to 9, when the soluble tungstate ion, the aluminum hydroxide, and solid thorium dioxide were formed. Through the first nanofiltration, the tungstate ion is obtained in the permeate, and thorium dioxide and aluminum hydroxide in the concentrate. By adding a pH 13 solution over the two precipitates, the aluminum is solubilized as sodium aluminate, which will be found after the second nanofiltration in the permeate, with the thorium dioxide remaining integrally (within an error of ±0.1 ppm) on the C–PHF–M membrane.
