Extensive development of expressway infrastructure alters the layout of terrain resulting and results in major ecological concerns. Therefore, it has become necessary to investigate how to assess the effects of land use changes on the landscape pattern and explore pertinent environmental concerns related to road construction. This study develops a numerical mothed to assess the ecological risk of road construction in terms of landscape pattern by combining the landscape disturbance index and the vulnerability index. The model is used to assess the landscape ecological risk of a particular portion of the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway in Cambodia. The empirical study found that the rise in the amount of construction land was transferred from the area of grassland to cultivated land. It is identified through calculating the landscape pattern index that the integrity of the landscape decreases due to the expressway construction; ecological landscape tends to be complicated and fragmented; and the gravity center of the land use landscape pattern transitions in the same direction as the expressway construction. The ecological risk was assessed and it was found that the expressway construction led to a transition to poorer ecological quality along the road as a whole, and that areas of high ecological risk and higher ecological risk were gradually concentrated from the two ends to the central area. The study develops the landscape ecological risk assessment model and extends the landscape ecological risk assessment index to the ecological assessment of expressway construction. It can also effectively guide the ecological risk assessment of major international road projects.

This study proposes a simplified unit that can be employed in an industrial facility for the utilization of its own abundant plastic waste, primarily from discarded packaging, to achieve full or partial energy autonomy. By converting this waste into synthetic pyrolysis oil equivalent to 91,500 L, the industry can power a combined heat and power generation unit. The proposed unit was designed with a focus on maintaining high temperatures efficiently while minimizing oxygen exposure to protect the integrity of hydrocarbons until they transform into new compounds. Pyrolysis stands as a foundational procedure, paving the way for subsequent thermochemical transformations such as combustion and gasification. This study delves into the factors affecting pyrolysis and presents analytically the mathematical formulations and relevant calculations in order to effectively design and apply a real-life system. On this basis, fuels from plastic waste can be produced, suitable for utilization in typical equipment meant to produce heat, estimated for six months' operation and 800 MWh of electricity. This study enhances the transition towards a more circular and resource-efficient economy with technologies that unlock the latent energy contained within the discarded matter. Additionally, it demonstrates the feasibility of a moderate investment in a co-generation system for industries utilizing 568 tonnes of plastic waste per year. Within the evolving regulatory landscape of the European Union concerning animal by-product (ABP) management within the circular economy framework, this study explores the concurrent objectives of safeguarding public health and environmental integrity and maximizing final product value. Anaerobic digestion (AD) emerges as a holistic solution for ABP management, addressing sanitation concerns while enhancing end-product quality. Through laboratory-scale experimentation, the AD process applied to four substrates—poultry manure, swine manure, cattle manure, and food waste—is scrutinized. Prior to AD, pasteurization at 70 °C for 60 min ensures microbial safety. Subsequently, four experimental AD cycles compare pasteurized and unpasteurized substrates. Results highlight the efficacy of pasteurization in sanitizing final products across all substrates, emphasizing its pivotal role in product safety. However, pasteurization's impact on system performance varies. While enhancing biogas yield from animal waste notably, its influence on food waste biogas production is less pronounced, indicating substrate-specific dynamics. This study offers insights into optimizing ABP management strategies, emphasizing the interplay between pasteurization, substrate characteristics, and AD performance. Estimating the parameters of an unidentified toxic pollutant source is crucial for public safety, especially in densely populated urban areas. Implementing source term estimation methods in real-world urban environments is challenging due to complex phenomena and the absence of concentration observational data. This work combines a computational fluid dynamics numerical simulation with the Metropolis–Hastings MCMC algorithm to identify the location and quantify the release rate of an unknown source within the geometry of Augsburg city center. To address the lack of concentration measurements, synthetic observations are generated by a forward dispersion model. The methodology is tested using these datasets, both as directly calculated by the forward model and with added Gaussian noise under different source release and wind flow scenarios. The results indicate that in most cases, both the source location and the release rate are estimated accurately. Although a higher performance is achieved using synthetic datasets without additional noise, high accuracy predictions are also obtained in many applications of noisy measurement datasets. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising biowaste valorization technology for sustainable energy, circular economy, local energy community growth, and supporting local authorities' environmental goals. This paper presents a systematic review meta-analysis methodology for biomethane estimation, using over 600 values of volatile solids (VS) content and biochemical methane potential (BMP) of six different waste streams, collected from 240 scientific studies. The waste streams include cow manure (CM), sheep/goat manure (SGM), wheat straw (WS), household waste (HW), organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), and sewage sludge (SS). The statistical analysis showed a mean VS content of 11.9% (CM), 37.3% (SGM), 83.1% (WS), 20.8% (HW), 19.4% (OFMSW), and 10.6% (SS), with BMP values of 204.6, 184.1, 305.1, 361.7, 308.3, and 273.1 L CH4/kg VS, respectively. The case study of Kozani, Greece, demonstrated the methodology's applicability, revealing a potential annual CH4 production of 15,429,102 m3 (corresponding to 551 TJ of energy), with SGM, WS, and CM as key substrates. Kozani, aiming for climate neutrality by 2030, currently employs conventional waste management, like composting, while many local business residual streams remain unused. This paper puts forward a generic methodological framework to holistically assess WtE technologies based on the PROMETHEE approach. In addition to environmental and economic aspects, the method focuses on large-scale applicability and social preference, thus adopting economic, environmental, social, and technological criteria. Three data sources are selected, namely the scientific literature, a public survey, and an experts' opinion survey, which is a novel combination with the aim to cover public consensus, technological applicability, and to provide alternative data sources for the economic and environmental criteria, thus enriching the methodology with the input of location specific data. The demonstration of the applicability of the proposed methodology is realized at a national level for the case of Greece. Anaerobic Digestion is shown to be the most preferable choice, recognized for its cost-effectiveness and lower environmental burden to other WtE technologies (i.e., gasification, pyrolysis, incineration). When all criteria are evaluated with equal weights, anaerobic digestion greatly outperforms incineration (net flow 0.833 versus 0.1667), while incineration only becomes the most preferred choice if the social criterion is in high focus (i.e., over 63% weight). Tourism is one of the most dynamic and far-reaching economic sectors in the world. Numerous different and complex activities are involved in the efficient development of tourism. These activities interrelate economic, environmental, social, cultural and political dimensions in the overall supply chain. However, apart from its key role as a driver of socio-economic progress, tourism is responsible for environmental deterioration, not only in areas popular with tourists, but also by enhancing climate change globally. This paper presents a robust method based on the Green Tourism Supply Chain Management (GTSCM) concept, which can be used to estimate the effect on the environment that can be attributed to each link of the supply chain. The overall approach is based on Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) theory and corresponding models. A case study to demonstrate the applicability of this approach is presented for two large seaside hotels located in Chalkidiki, Greece. Chalkidiki is the most popular tourist destination in Northern Greece. A LCIA questionnaire was developed and input data for the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) obtained from the hotel managers. For this LCA SimaPro 8 software was used. The LCIA methods chosen were Eco-indicator 99 and CML 2001. The effect on fossil fuel consumption of both hotels due to their use of local transport and electricity was considerable but less than that needed for transporting the tourists by air to Chalkidiki.
