This study aimed to assess and correlate initial surface roughness and frictional resistance of rectangular CuNiTi wires inserted in different self-ligating brackets. The sample consisted of 40 bracket-wire sets (rectangular CuNiTi wires of 0.017" x 0.025" and passive self-ligating brackets) divided into four groups (n=10): metallic self-ligating bracket and metallic CuNiTi wire (G1); metallic self-ligating bracket and rhodium-coated CuNiTi wire (G2); esthetic self-ligating bracket and metallic wire (G3); esthetic self-ligating bracket and rhodium-coated CuNiTi wire (G4). The initial surface roughness of the wires was examined with a Surfcorder roughness meter, model SE1700. Later, frictional resistance was assessed in an Instron 4411 universal testing machine at a speed of 5 mm/min, in an aqueous medium at 35°C. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess the association between the symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD), sleep quality, and indicators of burnout syndrome in teachers. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 330 teachers with an average age of 43 years. The Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the questionnaire to assess burnout syndrome - teachers' version were used for data collection. Simple and multiple logistic regression models were applied to analyze the independent variables at a 5% significance level. RESULTS Teachers with poor sleep quality, indicators of burnout syndrome, female sex, and impact on the domains of psychological exhaustion and guilt were, respectively, 1.91,1.92, 2.66, 1.97, and 2.60 times more likely to present at least one TMD symptom (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Teachers with indicators of burnout syndrome and impaired sleep quality were more likely to present with at least one TMD symptom.

The purpose of this study was to assess the stability of changes in the upper airways 4 years after orthognathic surgery in patients with skeletal Class II malocclusion.A retrospective clinical study was conducted including 33 cone-beam computed tomography images from 11 patients (average age of 35.91 years) followed up longitudinally for 4 years. The airways were measured with the help of the Dolphin Imaging software (Dolphin Imaging and Management Systems, Chatsworth, Calif) at 3 points: T1 (preoperative), T2 (6 months after surgery), and T3 (4 years after surgery). The parameters assessed were surface area (SA), minimum axial area, and volume (VOL) of the pharyngeal airway space. The times were compared using analysis of variance and Tukey's test. Pearson's analysis was performed to assess the correlation with surgical changes and age (P 0.05).Four years after operating on the airway spaces, the means of SA and VOL were significantly higher than those observed before the surgery (P 0.05). The means at 6 months were intermediate, with no significant difference before the surgery and 4 years after it (P 0.05). There was no significant correlation of the changes in SA, VOL, and minimum axial area with the amount of mandibular advancement, counterclockwise rotation of the occlusal plane, and age of the patient (P 0.05).Four years after mandibular advancement surgery in patients with skeletal Class II malocclusion, the increases in the airways remained stable.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da variacao da temperatura na degradacao das forcas da cadeia de elasticos de diferentes marcas. Para compor os grupos experimentais (G), foram confeccionados 100 segmentos de elasticos, sendo 20 de cada marca: G1 - American Orthodontics; G2 - TP Ortodontica; G3 - 3M Unitek / ESPE; G4 - GAC; e, G5 - Rocky Mountain (RM). Metade dos elasticos (n = 10) foi submetida a termociclagem e a outra metade armazenada em agua destilada a 37oC. Todas as amostras foram submetidas a analise de degradacao de forca na maquina universal de ensaios Instron, sendo a primeira leitura realizada apos a confeccao dos corpos-de-prova e repetida apos um periodo de 28 dias. Nesse periodo, os elasticos permaneceram esticados em placas de acrilico. Os dados foram submetidos a modelos mistos para medidas repetidas e os dados foram submetidos a Analise de Variância 2 fatores e ao teste de Tukey (α = 0,05). O Grupo G2 apresentou resistencia media significativamente maior nos tempos inicial e final, com e sem termociclagem. Summary Objective The present study aimed to compare the force of aesthetic wires and their non-aesthetic equivalents from two commercial brands at different displacement points, during the unloading phase at 36 °C. Materials and methods Forty samples (n = 10) were assessed, which were presented in two groups of aesthetic wires and two groups of non-aesthetic wires from the brands GAC® (Dentsply GAC® International, NY, USA) and Aditek®(Cravinhos, SP, Brazil), with 0.016-inch gauge. The orthodontic wires were maintained at a temperature of 36 °C throughout the experiment and they were subjected to the three-point bending test at a speed of 1 mm/min. The unloading values were recorded as 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5 mm of displacement. The data were subjected to Student's t-test and unequal variance t test, at 5% significance level. Results During the unloading phase, the mean force was significantly higher for aesthetic wires than non-aesthetic ones, in the deflection of 2.5 mm, presenting values means of 2.25 N (P = .0213). In deflections of 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm, the orthodontic archwires did not show significant differences in force between the thermally activated wires with aesthetic coating and their non-aesthetic equivalents (P ≥ 0.05). Conclusion It is concluded that during the unloading phase at a temperature of 36 °C, the orthodontic archwires analyzed did not show significant difference in force between thermally activated wires with aesthetic coating and their non-aesthetic equivalents at most displacement points analysed, except for the deflection of 2.5 mm, which showed higher values.

Introduction Orofacial pain is a critical TMD symptom that can influence physical and social capacity. Objective To evaluate the association of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) symptoms with affective relationships and demographic variables in young adults. Material and method A cross-sectional study involving 395 young adults was developed. Diagnostic Criteria for TMD, anxiety, and depression were collected from questionnaires. The Dental Health Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need measures the orthodontic treatment need. Questionnaires also contained questions related to the previous orthodontic treatment. Logistic regression models were adjusted, estimating crude odds ratio with the 95% confidence intervals. The variables with p0.05). Material e método Estudo transversal envolvendo 395 adultos jovens foi realizado. Os critérios diagnósticos para DTM, ansiedade e depressão foram coletados a partir de questionários. O Componente de Saúde Bucal do Índice de Necessidade de Tratamento Ortodôntico mensurou a necessidade de tratamento ortodôntico. Os questionários também continham questões relacionadas ao tratamento ortodôntico anterior. Modelos de regressão logística foram ajustados, estimando odds ratio bruto com os intervalos de confiança de 95%. As variáveis com p0.05). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature variation on surface microhardness and resistance to flexion of different materials used for making a temporary dental disocclusion.One hundred specimens were made of the following materials (n=20): glass ionomer cement (GIC); compomer (CP); composite resin (CR); Blue colour resin composite for temporary dental disocclusion (BTDD); ultraviolet colour resin composite for temporary dental disocclusion (UVTDD). They were stored in distilled water for 24hours and, subsequently, half of the specimens in each group were subjected to thermal cycling (n=10). All samples were subjected to the microhardness test (HMV-2000) and the flexural strength analysis (INSTRON). The data were submitted to parametric statistical analysis (ANOVA) and Tukey's complementary test with a significance level of 5%. In the mechanical tests, all materials except the GIC showed a statistically significant difference between the groups subjected to thermal cycling and not submitted, and thermal cycling (P0.05) was responsible for the reduction of the values found, except for GIC.In the mechanical tests, all materials except the GIC showed a statistically significant difference between the groups subjected to thermal cycling and not submitted, and thermal cycling (P0.05) was responsible for the reduction of the values found, except for GIC. Introduction Tooth agenesis is likely to affect the root teeth and should be considerated in orthodontic tratament. Objective The aim of this study was to assess the association between agenesis and root morphology of anterior teeth. Material and method The anterior teeth of 51 individuals were evaluated on 102 periapical radiographs and then divided into three groups: Group 1 (n=16) – no tooth agenesis; Group 2 (n=17) – only third molar agenesis; and Group 3 (n=18) – tooth agenesis of premolars or lateral incisors. Root morphology of anterior teeth was evaluated and the roots were classified as short, blunt, apically bent, and pipette-shaped. Objective: Overweight and obesity rates are growing at alarming levels worldwide. Adolescents of higher socioeconomic status are more likely to be overweight, however, information from economically vulnerable populations is lacking. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the impact of normative and self-perceived clinical aspects on the outcomes of obesity in vulnerable adolescents. Methodology: Observational cross-sectional study with 239 adolescents with an average age of 13 years, enrolled in public schools in Sabará (Minas Gerais). Body Mass Index values were obtained and classified according to AnthroPlus software. Dental Health Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) evaluated the normative malocclusion and the Aesthetic Component of IOTN the subjective occlusal evaluation. DMFT index evaluated dental caries activity and experience. Crude Odds Ratio values were estimated and adjusted, with a 95% confidence interval and a 5% significance level. Results: Adolescents with self-perceived malocclusion were less likely to be obese (P 0.05). Conclusion: Adolescents with self-perceived malocclusion were less likely to be obese, suggesting that obesity is associated with perceived malocclusion, but not with caries experience. Resultados: Los adolescentes con maloclusión percibida tenían menos probabilidades de ser obesos (P < 0.05). En general, el 20.0% de los adolescentes con maloclusión percibida eran obesos, en comparación con el 40.6% de aquellos sin maloclusión percibida. La obesidad no se asoció con el género y la caries dental (P > 0.05). Conclusión: Los adolescentes con maloclusión autopercibida tenían menos probabilidades de ser obesos, lo que sugiere que la obesidad está asociada con la maloclusión percibida, pero no con la experiencia de caries. Introduction This cross-sectional study aimed to associate the normative cephalometric results of mandibular retrognathism treatment with patient perception on the esthetic improvement of facial profile. Objective this cross-sectional study aimed to associate the normative cephalometric results of mandibular retrognathism treatment with patient perception on the esthetic improvement of facial profile. Material and method The normative cephalometric results were obtained from lateral cephalometric radiographs of a sample of 24 Class II malocclusion patients in the pubertal growth spurt. Such patients were treated with a mandibular advancement device and evaluated by comparing pre- and post-treatment variables. The same radiographs were used to produce standardized black silhouettes that were randomly arranged. Patients were instructed to choose their preferred profile and indicate the changes perceived using a 7-point Likert scale. The data were compared with cephalometric results using a mixed-model methodology for time-repeated measures, Student’s t-test, and t-test for heterogeneous variances, at 5% significance level. Result A rate of 75% of patients preferred post-treatment silhouettes and changes were perceived regardless of the choice of either pre- or post-treatment profile. There was no significant difference between the cephalometric variables of the tracings that produced the silhouettes considered better or worse after the evaluation. Conclusion There was no association between the cephalometric results after treatment and the perception of esthetic improvement by patients treated for mandibular retrognathia.

When a dysfunction occurs in any component of the stomatognathic system, temporomandibular disorders (TMD) may originate. The aim of this study was to compare the deviations, displacement and the execution speed of mandibular movements among asymptomatic participants and those with TMD. Convenience sampling was used; forty participants diagnosed by clinical evaluation following the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders were divided into three groups: arthropathy (GART, 10 participants, 40% men), myopathy (GMYO, 10 participants, 30% men), and the control group (CG, 20 asymptomatic participants, 25% men). Participants were asked to perform the movements of free maximal mouth opening and closing, right and left lateral excursions, and protrusion with sliding teeth contacts. The mandibular trajectory was recorded using opto-electronic devices tracking reflective markers placed in front of the 'soft tissue pogonion point'. The movements were analysed on the following axis: x - medial-lateral, y - vertical, z - antero-posterior. Significative differences were found in CGxGART - unassisted maximal mouth opening and closing projection on y-axis (OCY), CGxGMYO - unassisted maximal mouth opening and closing projection on x-axis (OCX), and in the measures Opening lateral deviation on x-axis (OLDX), closing lateral deviation on x-axis (CLDX) and in the measures of speed for both. Objetivo:O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a prevalencia de dor nas regioes craniomandibular e cervical em individuos com Disfuncao Temporomandibular (DTM) e analisar o efeito dessas desordens na ativacao bilateral dos musculos temporal anterior (TA) e masseter (MA) durante o ciclo mastigatorio.Metodos:Participaram deste estudo 55 voluntarios do sexo feminino com idade de 18 a 30 anos. A presenca de DTM e de dor craniomandibular e cervical foi avaliada por meio do questionario Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) e uma combinacao de testes para a regiao cervical. A analise da ativacao muscular do TA e MA durante o ciclo mastigatorio foi realizada atraves dos indices de simetria e do coeficiente anteroposterior.Resultados:A atividade dos musculos TA, durante o ciclo mastigatorio, e mais assimetrica em individuos com DTM. A dor craniomandibular, mais prevalente nesses individuos, influencia nesses resultados.Conclusao:Individuos com DTM apresentam alteracao no padrao mastigatorio do musculo TA e estimulos nociceptivos da regiao craniomandibular podem influenciar no aumento da assimetria de ativacao dessa musculatura.

Objective The aim of the study was to determine prevalence of malocclusion and the inter- and intra-arch relations in schoolchildren of 7-12 years of Vazante, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methods In the inter-arch relations the sagittal, vertical and transverse aspects were evaluated, and in the intra-arch relations, diastemas, crowding and tooth losses were determined in 670 children. The maloclussion was classified as Class I , II and III according to Angle, based on the position of the first molars. For this study, the sample was divided into two age groups: children from 7 to 9 years and children from 10 to 12 years old. Results A similar percentage of individuals with Class I and II was found in the two age groups evaluated. A higher percentage of Class III individuals was observed in the age group from 10 to 12 years. The presence of cross bite, anterior open bite, diastemas, crowding and early primary tooth loss was prevalent in the age groups of 7 and 9 years. Deep bite, posterior cross bite and early loss of permanent teeth prevailed in the age from 10 to 12 years. Conclusion It could be concluded that there was a high rate of malocclusion in children and the sagittal relation was maintained in the two periods evaluated. A larger number of manifestations of anterior open bite were observed in the age group of 7 to 9 years, and overbite in the Group from 10 to 12 years. In the transverse relation there was an increase in cross bite from the first to second transitory period.

RESUMO Objetivo O principal objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o efeito do tempo de contração e repouso na atividade dos músculos masseter e temporal. Métodos 49 sujeitos do sexo feminino com idade entre 18 e 30 anos foram divididos em grupos DTM (n: 26) e controle (n: 23). A eletromiografia de superfície foi utilizada para avaliar os músculos temporal anterior e masseter durante protocolos de contração e repouso muscular. Foram analisados os parâmetros eletromiográfico raiz quadrada da média, frequência mediana e o coeficiente da inclinação da reta de regressão linear. Resultados Foi encontrado efeito significativo do tempo no protocolo de contração e de repouso muscular. No protocolo de contração, sujeitos com DTM apresentaram significativa diminuição da frequência mediana no masseter direito e do coeficiente de inclinação do músculo temporal direito comparados ao grupo controle. Conclusão Apesar de os sujeitos com DTM apresentarem maior suscetibilidade à fadiga, comparados aos controles, ambos os grupos devem respeitar o tempo máximo de 5 s de contração voluntária máxima e no mínimo 30 s de repouso entre sucessivas contrações da musculatura mastigatória durante protocolos de avaliação clínica ou de pesquisa. Aim: To evaluate signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder and satisfaction in patients before and after orthognathic surgery. Methods: The sample consisted of 15 patients aged between 19 and 47 years old, indicated for orthodontic-surgical treatment. All patients answered na anamnesis questionnaire based on Helkimo Anamnestic Index to evaluate subjective symptoms and underwent a clinical evaluation based on Helkimo Disfunction Index, applied at three time points: before (T0), three (T1) and six months (T2) after surgery. Statistical models used were χ2 test (Chi-square), Tukey test, confidence interval and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The model was observed on a plane polariscope - in a dark field microscope configuration - and photographed at each exchange of wire. Then, they were replaced by self-ligating brackets and the process was repeated. Analysis was qualitative and observed stress location and pattern on both models analyzed. CONCLUSIONS: Results identified greater stress on the region of the apex of premolars in both analyzed models. Upon comparing the stress between models, a greater amount of stress was found in the model with conventional brackets in all of its wires. Therefore, the present pilot study revealed that alignment of wires in self-ligating brackets produced lower stress in periodontal tissues in expansive mechanics. OBJETIVO: o presente estudo analisou, por meio de um modelo fotoelástico, a distribuição das tensões geradas em braquetes convencionais e autoligáveis quando ativados com arcos expandidos. MÉTODOS: braquetes convencionais foram colados em dentes artificiais e, em seguida, foi confeccionado o modelo fotoelástico, utilizando como base o diagrama 19/12, de Interlandi. Foram feitas trocas sucessivas com fios de liga de níquel-titânio (NiTi) de secção circular 0,014" e 0,018" e de liga de aço de secção retangular 0,019" x 0,025", todos no diagrama 22/14 de Interlandi. A cada troca de fio, o modelo foi observado em polariscópio plano, na configuração de campo escuro, e fotografado. Foi feita a substituição por braquetes autoligáveis e repetido o experimento. A análise foi qualitativa, observando o local e o padrão da tensão das franjas nos dois modelos analisados. CONCLUSÕES: os resultados identificaram uma maior padrão de tensões das franjas na região do ápice de pré-molares em ambos os modelos analisados. Ao se comparar as tensões entre os modelos, observou-se uma maior quantidade de tensão nas franjas no modelo com braquetes convencionais em todos os fios utilizados no experimento. Portanto, o presente estudo mostrou que o alinhamento dos fios nos braquetes autoligáveis produz forças mais suaves nos tecidos periodontais nas mecânicas expansionistas.

Aim: To evaluate the frictional force between the archwire and orthodontic bracket generated by elastomeric ligatures with polymer coating (Super slick, TP Orthodontics) and conventional ligatures (Morelli) using two types of insertion techniques. Methods: Forty elastomeric ligatures, 20 with polymer coating and 20 conventional, were evaluated. Each type of ligature was separated into two groups (n=10), according to the insertion mode: conventional or crossed (from mesial to distal region crossed in front). To analyze friction, 40 5-cm-long segments of stainless steel orthodontic archwire 0.019" x 0.025" (Morelli) and Edgewise brackets (slot 0.022" x 0.028"; Morelli) were used. Each set (bracket, wire and elastic) was submitted to frictional testing in a universal test machine (Instron 4411) at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar clinicamente as relacoes morfologicas oclusais de criancas com idade entre tres anos e seis meses a seis anos e 11 meses, frequentadoras de creches municipais da cidade de Piracicaba- SP. Foram analisadas as relacoes ântero-posteriores e transversais dos arcos dentais deciduos que foram classificados de acordo com a morfologia presente em: Relacao dos incisivos – sentido vertical: (Mordida aberta anterior, Sobremordida (Overbite), Normal – incisivo superior cobrindo ate um terco do incisivo inferior); Relacao dos incisivos – sentido horizontal: (Mordida cruzada, Sobressaliencia (Overjet), Normal - incisivo superior cobrindo ate um terco do incisivo inferior, por vestibular); Relacao ântero-posterior de caninos deciduos: (Classe I – canino superior ocluindo no espaco entre o canino e o primeiro molar inferior; Classe II - canino superior ocluindo anteriormente ao espaco entre o canino e o primeiro molar inferior; Classe III - canino superior ocluindo posteriormente ao espaco entre o canino e o primeiro molar inferior); Relacao terminal dos segundos molares deciduos: Degrau mesial, Degrau distal, Plano Vertical. As criancas foram examinadas por um CD (GPN), pela entao academica (CAS) e pela fonoaudiologa (VVD) para a analise da oclusao. A analise foi realizada atraves de estatistica descritiva observando-se as variaveis em analise: alteracoes oclusais. Pelos resultados concluiu-se que houve alta prevalencia de ma oclusao na amostra (71,6%), encontrando-se a mais alta incidencia para a mordida aberta anterior associada a mordida cruzada lateral posterior.

OBJETIVO: avaliar os efeitos da associação entre a remoção de hábitos de sucção e a Terapia Miofuncional Orofacial na ampliação da aeração nasal. MÉTODOS: vinte crianças na faixa de etária de quatro anos a quatro anos e oito meses foram distribuídas em dois grupos denominados de: Grupo REM (submetido apenas à remoção de hábitos) e Grupo TMF (submetido à remoção de hábitos e posteriormente à Terapia Miofuncional Orofacial). O fluxo de ar expirado pelas narinas foi registrado por meio do espelho nasal milimetrado de Altmann e quantificado em papel milimetrado denominado de Bloco de Referência do Espelho de Altmann. The prolonged habit of pacifier sucking and the prolonged use of feeding bottle may cause myofunctional disorder, such as incorrect swallowing pattern and inadequate tongue rest position.To study the effect of myofunctional therapy (MFT) associated with the removal of the habit of pacifier sucking and the use of feeding bottle (REM) on the rehabilitation of swallowing and tongue rest position.Two groups with ten children, ages ranging from four to four years and eight months, who initially presented a pacifier sucking habit and used the feeding bottle were studied. Children on REM group underwent the process of sucking habits removal using the Modified-Counselling Method, whereas children on MFT group underwent the same procedure associated to myofunctional therapy. Pre-treatment assessments were made, as well as 60 and 180 days post-treatment assessments. Data were analyzed using the statistical tests of Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon (p0.05).Results indicate that children in the MFT group presented adequate swallowing patterns after 60 and 80 days, and presented adequate tongue rest position after 180 days. Children on the REM group, however, presented adequate swallowing pattern only after 180 days and did not present a significant improvement on the tongue rest position during the assessments.Myofunctional therapy associated to the removal of sucking habits presented a better and faster improvement of the swallowing pattern and of the tongue rest position.

TEMA: hábitos prolongados de sucção de chupeta e mamadeira podem provocar distúrbios miofuncionais como o padrão incorreto de deglutição e repouso lingual. OBJETIVO: estudar os efeitos da associação da Terapia Miofuncional (TMF) e da remoção de hábitos (REM) de sucção na reabilitação da deglutição e repouso lingual. MÉTODO: dois grupos composto por dez crianças de quatro anos a quatro anos e oito meses de idade que inicialmente apresentavam hábitos de sucção de chupeta e mamadeira foram estudados. O grupo denominado REM foi submetido à REM pelo Método de Esclarecimento modificado, enquanto que o grupo denominado TMF também teve os hábitos de sucção removidos pelo mesmo método e foi associada a TMF. Foram realizados exames pré-tratamento, 60 e 180 dias pós-procedimentos. Os dados foram submetidos aos testes estatísticos de Mann-Whitney e Wilcoxon p < 0,05. RESULTADOS: os resultados evidenciaram que o grupo submetido à REM e TMF apresentou adequação dos padrões de deglutição aos 60 dias e 180 dias e correto posicionamento de língua em repouso aos 180 dias, enquanto que o grupo submetido apenas à REM demonstrou adequação do padrão de deglutição apenas aos 180 dias e não apresentou melhora significativa do correto padrão de posicionamento de língua em repouso durante os períodos de avaliação. CONCLUSÃO: a TMF associada à REM de sucção de chupeta e mamadeira produziu melhor e mais rápida adequação do padrão de deglutição e de posicionamento lingual em repouso do que apenas a REM de sucção. A impossibilidade de respirar pelo nariz leva o indivíduo a desenvolver uma respiração oral que pode gerar modificações na postura lingual, labial e mandibular, bem como desarmonia dos tecidos moles, com consequente mudança na morfologia craniofacial, induzindo à má oclusão. Poucos trabalhos científicos descreveram as propostas terapêuticas empregadas ou utilizaram exames objetivos para mensurar a efetividade do tratamento miofuncional orofacial em casos de respiração oral. Sendo assim, esta pesquisa teve como objetivo verificar a efetividade de um programa miofuncional orofacial voltado ao tratamento da função respiratória em adultos com má oclusão dentária, considerando parâmetros respiratórios e a qualidade de vida em saúde oral. Participaram da pesquisa 13 indivíduos adultos em tratamento ortodôntico com má oclusão classe II, os quais foram divididos aleatoriamente em grupo experimental (GE) (n=9) e grupo controle (GC) (n=4). Foram aplicados os protocolos de qualidade de vida em saúde oral (OHIP-14) e de Sintomas Respiratórios. Além disto, foi feita a avaliação miofuncional da função respiratória, presente no protocolo MBGR, a qual envolve o tipo e modo respiratórios, fluxo nasal e possibilidade de uso nasal. Também foram avaliadas as medidas de tempo máximo de fonação (TMF) de /s/, pico do fluxo inspiratório nasal (peak-flow) e análise da medida da área de embaçamento da placa metálica, relacionada ao fluxo nasal expiratório. O objetivo do estudo foi verificar a influência das condições funcionais da língua nas funções de mastigação, deglutição e fala em indivíduos com disfunção temporomandibular (DTM) articular (deslocamento de disco com redução) e possível componente muscular associado. A amostra foi formada por 45 indivíduos, de ambos os gêneros, de 18 a 28 anos, divididos em dois grupos: DTM (n=30) e Controle (n=15). A função de língua foi averiguada quanto à tonicidade, mobilidade, pressão e diadococinesia oral. As funções de mastigação, deglutição e fala foram avaliadas a partir do exame clínico. Os dados referentes à tonicidade, mobilidade e às funções orofaciais foram coletados por meio do protocolo MBGR. A função mastigatória foi analisada, também, com a eletromiografia de superfície, sendo que os índices eletromiográficos foram obtidos durante mastigação unilateral. A pressão da língua foi mensurada utilizando-se o Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI), durante as provas de elevação, lateralização, protrusão, deglutição e teste de fadiga.
