We present a scalable method for the control of ion crystals in a grid-based surface electrode Paul trap and characterize it in the context of transport operations that sort and reorder multispecies crystals. By combining co-wiring of control electrodes at translationally symmetric locations in each grid site with the site-wise ability to exchange the voltages applied to two special electrodes gated by a binary input, site-dependent operations are achieved using only a fixed number of analog voltage signals and a single digital input per site. In two separate experimental systems containing nominally identical grid traps, one using $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}^{+}$-$^{138}\mathrm{Ba}^{+}$ crystals and the other $^{137}\mathrm{Ba}^{+}$-$^{88}\mathrm{Sr}^{+}$, we demonstrate this method by characterizing the conditional intra-site crystal reorder and the conditional exchange of ions between adjacent sites on the grid. Averaged across a multi-site region of interest, we measure sub-quanta motional excitation in the axial in-phase and out-of-phase modes of the crystals following these operations at exchange rates of 2.5 kHz. We present a method for achieving high fidelity state preparation and measurement (SPAM) using trapped ion hyperfine qubits with nuclear spins higher than $I = 1/2$. The ground states of these higher nuclear spin isotopes do not afford a simple frequency-selective state preparation scheme. We circumvent this limitation by stroboscopically driving strong and weak transitions, blending fast optical pumping using dipole transitions and narrow microwave or optical quadrupole transitions. We demonstrate this method with the $I=3/2$ isotope $^{137}\mbox{Ba}^+$ to achieve a SPAM infidelity of $\left(9.0 \pm 1.3\right) \times 10^{-5}$ ($-40.5 \pm 0.6$ dB), facilitating the use of a wider range of ion isotopes with favorable wavelengths and masses for quantum computation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We control the relative coupling strength of carrier and first order motional sideband interactions of a trapped ion by placing it in a resonant optical standing wave. Our configuration uses the surface of a microfabricated chip trap as a mirror, avoiding technical challenges of in-vacuum optical cavities. Displacing the ion along the standing wave, we show a periodic suppression of the carrier and sideband transitions with the cycles for the two cases $180^\circ$ out of phase with each other. This technique allows for suppression of off-resonant carrier excitations when addressing the motional sidebands, with applications in quantum simulation and quantum control. Using the standing wave fringes, we measure the relative ion height as a function of applied electric field, allowing for a precise measurement of ion displacement and, combined with measured micromotion amplitudes, a validation of trap numerical models., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Selective laser addressing of a single atom or atomic ion qubit can be improved using narrowband composite pulse sequences. We describe a Lie-algebraic technique to generalize known narrowband sequences and introduce new sequences related by dilation and rotation of sequence generators. Our method improves known narrowband sequences by decreasing both the pulse time and the residual error. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate these composite sequences using $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions trapped in a surface-electrode ion trap., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We present a simple cryostat purpose built for use with surface-electrode ion traps, designed around an affordable, large cooling power commercial pulse tube refrigerator. A modular vacuum enclosure with a single vacuum space facilitates interior access, and enables rapid turnaround and flexiblity for future modifications. Long rectangular windows provide nearly 360 degrees of optical access in the plane of the ion trap, while a circular bottom window near the trap enables NA 0.4 light collection without the need for in-vacuum optics. We evaluate the system's mechanical and thermal characteristics, and we quantify ion trapping performance by trapping 40Ca+, finding small stray electric fields, long ion lifetimes, and low ion heating rates., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures
