Abstract

This research program, involving French and Italian institutions, aims at understanding how the settling and development of the Etruscan city of Orbetello affected the environmental evolution of its lagoon, and how the evolution of the lagoon affected in turn the economics of Orbetello. In other words, to define how the life of the city has been influenced by its own impact on the lagoon. To achieve this we have followed two lines of research. One is historical, based on the analysis of iconographic, textual and archaeological archives from antiquity to the present day. The other, paleoenvironmental, is based on the analysis of sedimentary archives. The idea is to combine several investigation methods to map the dynamics of sedimentation, by means of geophysical prospecting (imaging of the sedimentary architecture using acoustic profiles) and the study of sedimentary cores. The latter allow the dating of sediments, the analysis of their biological components to reconstitute lagoon palaeoenvironments (ostracods, pollen, dinoflagellate cysts, malacofauna, composition of organic matter), and the analysis of metallic contaminants, highlighting the changes induced by lagoon management and the development of the city.

Abstract

In the context of the Archeofish Projet, Portopalo and its surroundings (Sicily, Italy) are studied in considering the existence of a productive landscape dedicated to fish salting activities during the Hellenistic and the Roman periods (1). This paper focuses on the lagoon of Morghella in order to identify palaeoenvironmental evidence suggesting an important salt production used for the fish salting industry of Portopalo during Ancient times.The lagoon of Morghella, locally called Pantano Morghella, have the specificity to have been used for salt production since the Medieval period until the 1980’s. The saltworks are now abandoned. This area offers an ideal case (1) to study the sedimentary signatures of the Modern saltworks and their abandonments and (2) to relate stratigraphical data to historical sources and living memories.First, we will describe the current hydrological, geomorphological and sedimentological aspects of the abandoned salt pans of Morghella. Second, an interdisciplinary study of the Medieval and Modern saltworks will be presented in order to clarify the processes leading to the deposits of the salt pans. Finally, based on the more recent data about the saltworks, we will seek evidence suggesting salt production during Hellenistic and Roman periods in the lagoon of Morghella.

Abstract

The study of Burano paleo-lagoon&mdash, Wetland of International Value, has allowed us to better define and extend the reconstruction of the Holocene paleoenvironmental evolution of the paleo-lagoons previously studied, located on the Tyrrhenian coast in central Italy. The investigated area is located in Southern Tuscany near the Burano Lake. The area was investigated by means of field surveys, historical maps, 16 coring, sedimentological, palynological and microfaunal analyses (foraminifera and ostracods), combined with robust geochronological control provided by 52 datings (14C and OSL). The study allowed us to reconstruct the environmental and morphological evolution of the Burano paleo-lagoon during the last 8000 years and to hypothesize a Rise Sea Level (RSL) curve. In this context, 5 main evolutionary phases have been recognized. (1) before 7.5 ka BP in the southern-eastern part, an open lagoon developed, (2) ~6 ka BP a barrier-lagoon system develops throughout the entire area and the lagoon progressively changed from open to closed one, (3) ~5 ka BP the width of the lagoon increases and a lacustrine facies appears along the entire axis of the coastal basin, (4) ~4 ka BP the lacustrine facies shows a discontinuous distribution respect to the previous phase, (5) during the last 4 ka the lacustrine facies disappear and the lagoon turns into a wetland area.

Abstract

During the 19th century, remains of an ancient harbour were found underwater at a depth of 5 to 6 meters in the eastern port of Alexandria. A research program was undertaken to determine when the harbour of Alexandria submerged underwater. Data were collected through underwater surveys by scuba diving and by campaigns of corings on land. Geomorphological (i.e. notches and pebble beaches), archaeological (harbour structures), and biological (i.e. marine macrofauna, bioconstructions, and biodepositions) sea level indicators were correlated to understand changes in relative sea level during the last 6 millennia. For each proxy, the altitudinal (vertical) and chronological ranges of imprecision were discussed. The results indicate that the rate of the relative sea level rise is ~80 mm per century between the middle of the 6th millennium and the 5th‒6th c. AD. An abrupt relative sea level rise (3.5 m + 1.5 m) occurred during the mid 8th c. to the end of 9th c. A D. I n t he 8 th c. A D, a s imilar p henomenon was observed for Heracleion (25 km east of Alexandria). Thus, a wide movement of sinking affected in a synchronous manner the western coastal margin of the Nile delta. Since this 8th- 9th c. AD event, the subsidence has increased around 2 m. The role of abrupt sinking events and subsidence remain determining in the deltaic context to anticipate future coastal adaptations and the risk of submersion.
