The installation of high-capacity fast chargers for electric vehicles (EVs) is posing a significant risk to the distribution grid as the increased demand from widespread residential EV charging could exceed the technical limits of the distribution system. Addressing this issue is critical, given that current infrastructure upgrades to enhance EV hosting capacity are both costly and time-consuming. Moreover, the inherent uncertainties associated with EV charging parameters make it challenging for power utilities to accurately assess the impact of EVs added to specific locations. To address these knowledge gaps, this study (a) introduces an algorithm to coordinate residential EV charging, and (b) proposes a comprehensive framework that evaluates all transformers within a feeder. The proposed method is applied to a real-world feeder, which includes 120 transformers of varying capacities. The results demonstrate that this approach effectively manages a substantial number of EVs without overloading any of the transformers, while also pinpointing locations that must be prioritized for future upgrades. This framework can serve as a valuable reference for utilities when conducting distribution system evaluations for supporting the growing EV penetration.

The transition towards carbon-neutral electricity is one of the biggest game changers in addressing climate change since it addresses the dual challenges of removing carbon emissions from the two largest sectors of emitters: electricity and transportation. The transition to a carbon-neutral electric grid poses significant challenges to conventional paradigms of modern grid planning and operation. Much of the challenge arises from the scale of the decision making and the uncertainty associated with the energy supply and demand. Artificial Intelligence (AI) could potentially have a transformative impact on accelerating the speed and scale of carbon-neutral transition, as many decision making processes in the power grid can be cast as classic, though challenging, machine learning tasks. The proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs) im-poses new challenges to distribution system operation, e.g., power quality issues. To overcome these challenges and enhance system operation, it is critical to effectively utilize all available resources and accurately characterize unbalanced distribution networks in operational tools. This paper proposes a convex second-order-cone programming (SOCP)-based AC optimal power flow (ACOPF) model for three-phase unbalanced distribution net-works, including smart inverters and Volt-VAr controller (VVC) devices. Reactive power-voltage (Q-V) characteristics of smart inverters of solar photovoltaic (PV) units are also modeled. More-over, the settings of Q-V characteristics of VVC are co-optimized within the proposed ACOPF, considering the allowable range of the IEEE 1547-2018 standard. Furthermore, dynamic analyses are conducted to verify the stability of optimal settings of VVC. The proposed models are tested on an actual 1747-node primary distribution feeder in Arizona. The results illustrate the effective-ness of the proposed ACOPF for unbalanced systems in provid-ing a global optimal solution while capturing the non-linearity and non-convexity of ACOPF. By co-optimizing settings, system operation is improved due to the flexibility of adjusting reactive power output from PV units with VVC. The high R/X ratio of typical distribution systems makes the system voltage vulnerable to the active power injection from distributed energy resources (DERs). Moreover, the intermittent and uncertain nature of the DER generation brings new challenges to the voltage control. This paper proposes a two-stage stochastic optimization strategy to optimally place the PV smart inverters with Volt-VAr capability for distribution systems with high photovoltaic (PV) penetration to mitigate voltage violation issues. The proposed optimization strategy enables a planningstage guide for upgrading the existing PV inverters to smart inverters with Volt-VAr capability while considering the operationstage characteristics of the Volt-VAr control. One advantage of this planning strategy is that it utilizes the local control capability of the smart inverter that requires no communication, thus avoiding issues related to communication delays and failures. Another advantage is that the Volt-VAr control characteristic is internally integrated into the optimization model as a set of constraints, making placement decisions more accurate. The objective of the optimization is to minimize the upgrading cost and the number of the smart inverters required while maintaining the voltage profile within the acceptable range. Case studies on an actual 12.47kV, 9km long Arizona utility feeder have been conducted using OpenDSS to validate the effectiveness of the proposed placement strategy in both static and dynamic simulations. This work proposes a method of wind farm scenario generation to support real-time optimization tools and presents key findings therein. This work draws upon work from the literature and presents an efficient and scalable method for producing an adequate number of scenarios for a large fleet of wind farms while capturing both spatial and temporal dependencies. The method makes probabilistic forecasts using conditional heteroscedastic regression for each wind farm and time horizon. Past training data is transformed (using the probabilistic forecasting models) into standard normal samples. A Gaussian copula is estimated from the normalized samples and used in real-time to enforce proper spatial and temporal dependencies. Reliable and accurate distribution system modeling, including the secondary network, is essential in examining distribution system performance with high penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs). This paper presents a highly automated, novel method to enhance the accuracy of utility distribution feeder models to capture their performance by matching simulation results with corresponding field measurements. The method is demonstrated using an actual feeder from an electrical utility with high penetration of DERs. The method proposed uses advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) voltage and derived active power measurements at the customer level, and data acquisition systems (DAS) measurements at the feeder-head, in conjunction with an AC optimal power flow (ACOPF) to estimate customer active and reactive power consumption over a time horizon, while accounting for unmetered loads. Additionally, the method proposed estimates both voltage magnitude and angle for each phase at the unbalanced distribution substation. Furthermore, the accuracy of the method developed is verified by comparing the time-series power flow results obtained from the enhancement algorithm with OpenDSS results. The proposed approach seamlessly manages the data available from the optimization procedure through the final model verification automatically.

This paper proposes an efficient algorithmic approach that overcomes the critical challenges in the real-time unbalanced distribution system state estimation, topology error processing, and outage identification simultaneously: (1) Limited locations of measurement devices and unsynchronized measurement data as well as missing and bad data, (2) Complicated mixed-phase switch actions and mutual impedances, and (3) the nonlinear nature of unbalanced distribution system power flow and measurement data . A single snap-shot mixed-integer quadratic programming (MIQP) optimization framework is proposed to cope with these challenges. This MIQP framework presents a more accurate unbalanced distribution system model, linearizes the nonlinear relationship between bus voltage and current injections, formulates the complicated mixed-phase switch operations, and executes the outage detection function via analytic constraints. The proposed model can be effectively solved by a general commercial MIP solver. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified on an actual distribution feeder in Arizona.

Ensuring reliable operation of large power systems subjected to multiple outages is a challenging task because of the combinatorial nature of the problem. Traditional approaches for security assessment are often limited by their scope and/or speed, resulting in missing of critical contingencies that could lead to cascading failures. This paper proposes a two-component methodology to enhance power system security. The first component combines an efficient algorithm to detect cut-set saturation (called the feasibility test (FT) algorithm) with real-time contingency analysis (RTCA) to create an integrated corrective action (iCA), whose goal is to secure the system against cut-set saturation as well as critical branch overloads. The second component only employs the results of the FT to create a relaxed corrective action (rCA) to secure the system against post-contingency cut-set saturation. The first component is more comprehensive, but the latter is computationally more efficient. The effectiveness of the two components is evaluated based upon the number of cascade triggering contingencies alleviated, and the computation time. The results obtained by analyzing different case-studies on the IEEE 118-bus and 2000-bus synthetic Texas systems indicate that the proposed two-component methodology successfully enhances the scope and speed of power system security assessment during multiple outages., Comment: Accepted in IEEE Transactions on Power Systems

After major disturbances, power system behavior is governed by the dynamic characteristics of its assets and protection schemes. Therefore, modeling protection devices is essential for performing accurate stability studies. Modeling all the protection devices in a bulk power system is an intractable task due to the limitations of current stability software, and the difficulty of maintaining and updating the data for thousands of protection devices. One of the critical protection schemes that is not adequately modeled in stability studies is distance relaying. Therefore, this paper proposes an algorithm that uses two methods to identify the critical distance relays to be modeled in stability studies: (i) apparent impedance monitoring, and (ii) the minimum voltage evaluation (MVE). The algorithm is implemented in Python 3.6 and uses the GE positive sequence load flow analysis (PSLF) software for performing stability studies. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated on the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) system data representing the 2018 summer-peak load. The results of the case studies representing various types of contingencies show that to have an accurate assessment of system behavior, modeling the critical distance relays identified by the algorithm suffices, and there is no need for modeling all the distance relays.

When multiple outages occur in rapid succession, it is important to know quickly if the power transfer capability of different interconnections (or cut-sets) of the power network are limited. The algorithm developed in this paper identifies such limited cut-sets very fast, thereby enhancing the real-time situational awareness of power system operators. The significance of the proposed approach is described using the IEEE 39-bus test system, while its computational benefits are demonstrated using relatively large test-cases containing thousands of buses. The results indicate that the proposed network analysis can estimate the impact of an outage on any cut-set of the system and screen out the cut-set that gets saturated by the largest margin, very quickly., Comment: Accepted in IEEE PESGM 2020

During major power system disturbances, when multiple component outages occur in rapid succession, it becomes crucial to quickly identify the transmission interconnections that have limited power transfer capability. Understanding the impact of an outage on these critical interconnections (called saturated cut-sets) is important for enhancing situational awareness and taking correct actions. This paper proposes a new graph theoretic approach for analyzing whether a contingency will create a saturated cut-set in a meshed power network. A novel feature of the proposed algorithm is that it lowers the solution time significantly making the approach viable for real-time operations. It also indicates the minimum amount by which the power transfer through the critical interconnections should be reduced so that post-contingency saturation does not occur. Robustness of the proposed algorithm for enhanced situational awareness is demonstrated using the IEEE-118 bus system as well as a 17,000+ bus model of the Western Interconnection (WI). Conventional electromagnetic transient (EMT) and phasor-domain hybrid simulation approaches presently exist for trans-mission system level studies. Their simulation efficiency is generally constrained by the EMT simulation. With an increasing number of distributed energy resources and non-conventional loads being installed in distribution systems, it is imperative to extend the hybrid simulation application to include distribution systems and integrated transmission and distribution systems. Meanwhile, it is equally important to improve the simulation efficiency as the modeling scope and complexity of the detailed system in the EMT simulation increases. To meet both requirements, this paper introduces an advanced EMT and phasor-domain hybrid simulation approach. This approach has two main features: 1) a comprehensive phasor-domain modeling framework which supports positive-sequence, three-sequence, three-phase and mixed three-sequence/three-phase representations and 2) a robust and flexible simulation mode switching scheme. The developed scheme enables simulation switching from hybrid simulation mode back to pure phasor-domain dynamic simulation mode to achieve significantly improved simulation efficiency. The proposed method has been tested on integrated transmission and distribution systems. Transmission and distribution dynamic co-simulation is a practical and effective approach to leverage existing simulation tools for transmission and distribution systems to simulate dynamic stability and performance of transmission and distribution systems in a systematic manner. Given that these tools are developed as stand-alone programs and there are inherent differences between them, interface techniques become critical to bridge them. Two important unsolved questions are: 1) which interface technique is better and should be used, and 2) how the modeling and simulation capabilities in these tools that are available and can be exploited for co-simulation should be considered when selecting an interface technique. To address these questions, this paper presents a comparative study for different interface techniques that can be employed for T and D dynamic co-simulation. In this paper, a stochastic model with regime switching is developed for solar photo-voltaic (PV) power in order to provide short-term probabilistic forecasts. The proposed model for solar PV power is physics inspired and explicitly incorporates the stochasticity due to clouds using different parameters addressing the attenuation in power.Based on the statistical behavior of parameters, a simple regime-switching process between the three classes of sunny, overcast and partly cloudy is proposed. Then, probabilistic forecasts of solar PV power are obtained by identifying the present regime using PV power measurements and assuming persistence in this regime. To illustrate the technique developed, a set of solar PV power data from a single rooftop installation in California is analyzed and the effectiveness of the model in fitting the data and in providing short-term point and probabilistic forecasts is verified. A new method of solving the power-flow problem, the holomorphically embedded load-flow method (HELM) is theoretically guaranteed to find the high-voltage solution, if one exists, up to the saddle-node bifurcation point (SNBP), provided sufficient precision is used and the conditions of Stahls theorem are satisfied. Sigma indices, have been proposed as estimators of the distance from the present operating point to the SNBP, and indicators of the weak buses in a system. In this paper, it is shown that the sigma condition proposed in [2] will not produce reliable results and that a modified requirement can be used to produce a tight upper bound on the SNBP. A branch flow model (BFM) is used to formulate the AC power flow in general networks. For each branch/line, the BFM contains a nonconvex quadratic equality. A mathematical formulation of its convex hull is proposed, which is the tightest convex relaxation of this quadratic equation. The convex hull formulation consists of a second order cone inequality and a linear inequality within the physical bounds of power flows. The convex hull formulation is analytically proved and geometrically validated. An optimal scheduling problem of distributed energy storage (DES) in radial distribution systems with high penetration of photovoltaic resources is investigated in this paper. To capture the performance of both the battery and converter, a second-order DES model is proposed. Following the convex hull of the quadratic branch flow equation, the convex hull formulation of the nonconvex constraint in the DES model is also derived. The proposed convex hull models are used to generate a tight convex relaxation of the DES optimal scheduling (DESOS) problem. The proposed approach is tested on several radial systems.
