Manipulating point defects for tailored macroscopic properties remains a formidable challenge in materials science. This study demonstrates a proof-of-principle for a universal law involving element Mn, significantly enhancing vacancy diffusion through an unprecedented anomalous Friedel Oscillations phenomenon, across most metals in the periodic table. The correlation between Mn-induced point-defect dynamic changes and intrinsic macro-properties is robustly validated through the first-principles theory and well-designed experiments. The physical origin stems from Mn's exceptionally large effective intra-elemental 3d electron interactions, surpassing the Coulomb attraction induced by vacancy and disrupting the electron screening effect. Given the ubiquitous nature of vacancies and their recognition as the most crucial defects influencing nearly all physical and mechanical properties of crystalline materials, this outcome may drive advances in a broad domain.

Giant magnetocaloric (GMC) materials constitute a requirement for near room temperature magnetic refrigeration. (Fe,Mn)$_2$(P,Si) is a GMC compound with strong magnetoelastic coupling. The main hindrance towards application of this material is a comparably large temperature hysteresis, which can be reduced by metal site substitution with a nonmagnetic element. However, the (Fe,Mn)$_2$(P,Si) compound has two equally populated metal sites, the tetrahedrally coordinated $3f$ and the pyramidally coordinated $3g$ sites. The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of such compounds are highly sensitive to the site specific occupancy of the magnetic atoms. Here we have attempted to study separately the effect of $3f$ and $3g$ site substitution with equal amounts of vanadium. Using formation energy calculations, the site preference of vanadium and its influence on the magnetic phase formation are described. A large difference in the isothermal entropy change (as high as 44\%) with substitution in the $3f$ and $3g$ sites is observed. The role of the lattice parameter change with temperature and the strength of the magnetoelastic coupling on the magnetic properties are highlighted.

Energy storage technologies that can meet the unprecedented demands of a sustainable energy system based on intermittent energy sources require new battery materials. We investigate high ionic conductors, Li$_3$ClO glasses. In the present work we use a first principles method to model the amorphous structure of the glass. We characterize the structure by means of radial distribution functions, radial disctributions functions and coordination numbers. We compare to their crystalline counterparts. The electronic structure of the glass is compared to that of the crystalline material. The band gap of the glass appears to be slighly reduced compared to that of the crystal. We also investigate the chemical stability of the glass against Li metal electrode. The electrochemical stability of the glassy electrolite is evaluated against Li metal.

Investigating the grain boundary energies of pure fcc metals and their surface energies obtained from ab initio modeling, we introduce a robust method to estimate the grain boundary energies for complex multicomponent alloys. The input parameter is the surface energy of the alloy, which can easily be accessed by modern ab initio calculations based on density functional theory. The method is demonstrated in the case of paramagnetic Fe-Cr-Ni alloys for which reliable grain boundary data is available.

A new class of rare-earth-free permanent magnets is proposed. The parent compound of this class is Co$_3$Mn$_2$Ge, and its discovery is the result of first principles theory combined with experimental synthesis and characterisation. The theory is based on a high-throughput/data-mining search among materials listed in the ICSD database. From ab-initio theory of the defect free material it is predicted that the saturation magnetization is 1.71 T, the uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy is 1.44 MJ/m$^3$, and the Curie temperature is 700 K. Co$_3$Mn$_2$Ge samples were then synthesized and characterised with respect to structure and magnetism. The crystal structure was found to be the MgZn$_2$-type, with partial disorder of Co and Ge on the crystallographic lattice sites. From magnetization measurements a saturation polarization of 0.86 T at 10 K was detected, together with a uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant of 1.18 MJ/m$^3$, and the Curie temperature of $T_{\rm C}$ = 359 K. These magnetic properties make Co$_3$Mn$_2$Ge a very promising material as a rare-earth free permanent magnet, and since we can demonstrate that magnetism depends critically on the amount of disorder of the Co and Ge atoms, a further improvement of the magnetism is possible. From the theoretical works, a substitution of Ge by neighboring elements suggest two other promising materials - Co$_3$Mn$_2$Al and Co$_3$Mn$_2$Ga. We demonstrate here that the class of compounds based on $T_3$Mn$_2$X (T = Co or alloys between Fe and Ni; X=Ge, Al or Ga) in the MgZn$_2$ structure type, form a new class of rare-earth free permanent magnets with very promising performance.

Recently, Theophilou (J. Chem.Phys {\bf 149} 074104 (2018)) showed that a set of spherically symmetric densities determines uniquely the external potential in molecules and solids. Here, spherically symmetric Kohn-Sham-like equations are derived. The spherical densities can be expressed with radial wave functions. Expression for the total energy is also presented.

Stacking fault energy (SFE) plays an important role in deformation mechanisms and mechanical properties of face-centered cubic (fcc) metals and alloys. In metastable fcc alloys, the SFEs determined from density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental methods often have opposite signs. Here, we show that the negative SFE by DFT reflects the thermodynamic instability of the fcc phase relative to the hexagonal close-packed one; while the experimentally determined SFEs are restricted to be positive by the models behind the indirect measurements. We argue that the common models underlying the experimental measurements of SFE fail in metastable alloys. In various concentrated solid solutions, we demonstrate that the SFEs obtained by DFT calculations correlate well with the primary deformation mechanisms observed experimentally, showing a better resolution than the experimentally measured SFEs. Furthermore, we believe that the negative SFE is important for understanding the abnormal behaviors of partial dislocations in metastable alloys under deformation. The present work advances the fundamental understanding of SFE and its relation to plastic deformations, and sheds light on future alloy design by physical metallurgy.

The ordered phase of the FeNi system is known to have promising magnetic properties as a rare-earth-free permanent magnet. Understanding the parameter space that controls the order-disorder transformation is important to find growth conditions that stabilize the $L1_0$ phase. Magnetic properties and chemical order-disorder transformation of FeNi are investigated as a function of lattice expansion using first-principles theory. Thermodynamic and magnetic calculations are performed using long-range order parameters, which is used to find the ordering temperature. Negative pressure promotes ordering and thus synthetic routes involving an increase in volume is expected to expand the stability field of the $L1_0$ phase.

Understanding the strengthening and deformation mechanisms in refractory high-entropy alloys (HEAs), proposed as new high-temperature material, is required for improving their typically insufficient room-temperature ductility. Here, density-functional theory simulations and a continuum mechanics analysis were conducted to systematically investigate the competition between cleavage decohesion and dislocation emission from a crack tip in the body-centered cubic refractory HEAs HfNbTiZr, MoNbTaVW, MoNbTaW, MoNbTiV, and NbTiVZr. This crack-tip competition is evaluated for tensile loading and a totality of 15 crack configurations and slip systems. Our results predict that dislocation plasticity at the crack tip is generally unfavorable -- although the competition is close for some crack orientations, suggesting intrinsic brittleness and low crack-tip fracture toughness in these five HEAs at zero temperature. Fluctuations in local alloy composition, investigated for HfNbTiZr, can locally reduce the resistance to dislocation emission for a slip system relative to the configuration average of that slip system, but do not change the dominant crack-tip response. In the case of single-crystal MoNbTaW, where an experimental, room-temperature fracture-toughness value is available for a crack on a \{100\} plane, theoretical and experimental results agree favorably. Factors that may limit the agreement are discussed. We survey the effect of material anisotropy on preferred crack tip orientations, which are found to be alloy specific. Mixed-mode loadings are found to shift the competition in favor of cleavage or dislocation nucleation, depending on crack configuration and amplified by the effect of material anisotropy on crack tip stresses., Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures

In order to efficiently explore the nearly infinite composition space in multicomponent solid solution alloys, it is important to establish predictive design strategies and use computation-aided methods. In the present work, we demonstrated the density functional theory calculations informed design routes for realizing transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) and twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) in Cr-Co-Ni medium entropy alloys (MEAs). We systematically studied the effects of magnetism and chemical composition on the generalized stacking fault energy surface (gamma-surface) and showed that both chemistry and the coupled magnetic state strongly affect the gamma-surface, consequently, the primary deformation modes. Based on the calculated effective energy barriers for the competing deformation modes, we constructed composition and magnetism dependent deformation maps at both room and cryogenic temperatures. Accordingly, we proposed various design routes for achieving desired primary deformation modes in the ternary Cr-Co-Ni alloys. The deformation mechanisms predicted by our theoretical models are in nice agreement with available experimental observations in literature. Furthermore, we fabricated two non-equiatomic Cr-Co-Ni MEAs possessing the designed TWIP and TRIP effects, showing excellent combinations of tensile strength and ductility.

Dislocation-solute interaction plays fundamental roles in mechanical properties of alloys. Here, we disclose the essential features of dislocation-carbon interaction in austenitic Fe at the atomistic scale. We show that passage of a Shockley partial dislocation in face-centered cubic iron is able to move carbon atoms on the slip plane forward by one Burgers vector, revealing a novel dissociated dislocation-mediated transport mechanism. This mechanism is induced by shear, which is distinct from the normal thermally activated diffusion process. Furthermore, we show that there exists a fast diffusion channel with significantly reduced diffusion energy barrier in the partial dislocation core, which is highly localized and directional. These inherent geometrical features are crucial for understanding the dependence of the diffusivity of dislocation pipe diffusion on the character of dislocations; most importantly, they can result in unbalanced pinning effect on the leading and trailing partials in a mixed dislocation, consequently facilitating stacking fault formation and deformation twinning. This explains the controversial effects of carbon on deformation twinning observed in various alloys. Our findings pave the road to tune mechanical properties of materials by manipulating dislocation-interstitial interaction.

High-density and nanosized deformation twins in face-centered cubic (fcc)materials can effectively improve the combination of strength and ductility. However, the microscopic dislocation mechanisms enabling a high twinnability remain elusive. Twinning usually occurs via continuous nucleation and gliding of twinning partial dislocations on consecutive close-packed atomic planes. Here we unveil a completely different twinning mechanism being active in metastable fcc materials. The transformation-mediated twinning (TMT) is featured by a preceding displacive transformation from the fcc phase to the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) one, followed by a second-step transformation from the hcp phase to the fcc twin. The nucleation of the intermediate hcp phase is driven by the thermodynamic instability and the negative stacking fault energy of the metastable fcc phase. The intermediate hcp structure is characterized by the easy slips of Shockley partial dislocations on the basal planes, which leads to both fcc and fcc twin platelets during deformation, creating more twin boundaries and further enhancing the prosperity of twins. The disclosed fundamental understanding of the complex dislocation mechanism of deformation twinning in metastable alloys paves the road to design novel materials with outstanding mechanical properties.

For many decades, the magnetic saturation of, e.g. hard metals (HM) such as WC-Co-based cemented carbides, has been used as process and quality control in industry to ensure consistency of product properties. In an urge of replacing cobalt as a binder phase, a demand on understanding the magnetic response as a function of composition on the atomic scale is growing. In this paper, a theoretical description of the measured weight specific magnetic saturation of hard metals as a function of the tungsten weight fraction present in the cobalt binder phase, based on first-principle calculations, has been established for standard WC-Co. The predicted magnetic saturation agrees well with the experimental one. Furthermore, it is proposed that the theoretical description can be extended to alternative and more complex binder phases which allows to transfer the production control to those hard metals.

Non-destructive and reliable quality control methods are a key aspect to designing, developing and manufacturing new materials for industrial applications and new technologies. The measurement of the magnetic saturation is one of such methods and it is conventionally employed in the cemented carbides industry. We present a general quantum mechanics based relation between the magnetic saturation and the components of the binder phase of cemented carbides, which can be directly employed as a quality control. To illustrate our results, we calculate the magnetic saturation of a binder phase, 85Ni15Fe binary alloy, using ab-initio methods and compare the theoretical predictions to the magnetic saturation measurements. We also analyse interface and segregation effects on the magnetic saturation by studying the electronic structure of the binder phase. The excellent agreement between calculations and measurements demonstrates the applicability of our method to any binder phase. Since the magnetic saturation is employed to ensure the quality of cemented carbides, the present method allows us to explore new materials for alternative binder phases efficiently

Density functional theory calculations have been performed to study the structures and energetics of coherent and semicoherent TiC/Fe interfaces. A systematic method for determining the interfacial energy for the semicoherent interface with misfit dislocation network has been developed. The obtained interfacial energies are used to calculate the aspect ratios for the disc-like precipitates and a quantitative agreement with the experimental results is reached. Based on the obtained interfacial energies and atomic structure details, we propose models for describing the evolution of the interfacial energy with respect to the size of TiC precipitate for heterogeneous nucleation on an edge dislocation, shedding light on the thermodynamics of precipitate nucleation and growth. The present method can be easily applied to any heterophase interfaces between metals and oxides/carbides/nitrides.

Reduced activation ferritic/martensitic (RAFM) steels are structural materials with potential application in Generation-IV fission and fusion reactors. We use density-functional theory to scrutinize the micro-mechanical properties of the main alloy phases of three RAFM steels based on the body-centered cubic FeCrWVMn solid solution. We assess the lattice parameters and elastic properties of ferromagnetic $\alpha$-Fe and Fe$_{91}$Cr$_{9}$, which are the main building blocks of the RAFM steels, and present a detailed analysis of the calculated alloying effects of V, Cr, Mn, and W on the mechanical properties of Fe$_{91}$Cr$_{9}$. The composition dependence of the elastic parameters is decomposed into electronic and volumetric contributions and studied for alloying levels that cover the typical intervals in RAFM steels. A linear superposition of the individual solute effects on the properties of Fe$_{91}$Cr$_{9}$ is shown to provide an excellent approximation for the \emph{ab initio} values obtained for the RAFM steels. The intrinsic ductility is evaluated through Rice's phenomenological theory using the surface and unstable stacking fault energies, and the predictions are contrasted with those obtained by empirical criteria. Alloying with V or W is found to enhance the ductility, whereas additional Cr or Mn turns the RAFM base alloys more brittle., Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures

The formation energy of the interface between face-centered cubic (fcc) and hexagonal close packed (hcp) structures is a key parameter in determining the stacking fault energy (SFE) of fcc metals and alloys using thermodynamic calculations. Often the contribution of the planar fault energy to the SFE has the same order of magnitude as the bulk part, and thus the lack of a precise information about it can become the limiting factor in thermodynamic predictions. Here, we differentiate between the actual interfacial energy for the coherent fcc(111)/hcp(0001) interface and the "pseudo-interfacial energy" that enters the thermodynamic expression for the SFE. Using first-principles calculations, we determine the coherent and pseudo- interfacial energies for six elemental metals (Al, Ni, Cu, Ag, Pt, and Au) and for three paramagnetic Fe-Cr-Ni alloys. Our results show that the two interfacial energies significantly differ from each other. We observe a strong chemistry dependence of both interfacial energies. The calculated pseudo-interfacial energies for the Fe-Cr-Ni steels agree well with the available literature data.

Interstitials (carbon and nitrogen) are crucial alloying elements for optimizing the mechanical performance of the twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels in terms of the stacking fault energy (SFE). First-principles calculations have been performed to study the effect of interstitial-induced lattice expansion on the SFE. Comparing the predictions with the SFEs measured for alloys containing C and N, our results suggest that the dominant effect of these interstitials on the SFE is due to the lattice expansion effect., Comment: 5 pages and 2 figures

First-principles alloy theory is used to establish the $\gamma$-surface of Fe-Cr-Ni alloys as function of chemical composition and temperature. The theoretical stacking fault energy (SFE) versus chemistry and temperature trends agree well with experiments. Combining our results with the recent plasticity theory based on the $\gamma$-surface, the stacking fault formation is predicted to be the leading deformation mechanism for alloys with effective stacking fault energy below about 18 mJ m$^{-2}$. Alloys with SFE above this critical value show both twinning and full slip at room temperature and twinning remains a possible deformation mode even at elevated temperatures, in line with observations., Comment: 5 pages and 3 figures
