Postexercise recovery is a crucial period, especially in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Supplementation with nutraceutical substances has been explored due to its potential cardioprotective effects. We aimed to investigate the impact of isolated and combined ingestion of beetroot extract and resveratrol on immediate postexercise recovery. Individuals with CVD were subjected to 4 experimental protocols consisting of 30 min of aerobic exercise. Before exercise, the subjects consumed 500 mg of starch, 500 mg of beetroot extract, 500 mg of resveratrol or both substances. Heart rate recovery (HRR), heart rate variability (HRV) and blood pressure (BP) responses were evaluated. No significant differences in the HRR were detected (p = 0.719) in the RMSSD30 index (p = 0.671) or BP responses (systolic BP − p = 0.703, diastolic BP − p = 0.638) between protocols. Supplementation with beetroot extract and/or resveratrol did not promote significant changes in immediate post-exercise recovery.Registration number - clinicaltrials.gov: NCT06095635

Introduction Permanent education in health aims to ensure that professionals are constantly learning in the workplace and in the last few years institutions resorted to the technology-mediated education modality and new teaching possibilities were explored. In Brazil, between 2017 and 2021, only six articles and five monographs were published about listening effort.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the effects of auditory stimulation on heart rate variability (HRV) indices in healthy individuals with normal hearing and with hearing loss, regardless of type and/or grade, by means of a systematic review. Research strategies This is a systematic review with a meta-analysis that addresses the following question: in healthy individuals with normal hearing and/or with hearing loss, what are the effects of auditory stimulation on HRV indices in comparison to silence? We consulted the Cochrane Library, Embase, LILACS, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases and the gray literature (Google Scholar, OpenGrey, and ProQuest). Selection criteria There were no restrictions as to period or language of publication. Data analysis We identified 451 records, an additional 261 in the gray literature, and five studies in a search through the references, resulting in a total of 717 records, with 171 duplicate records. After screening the titles and abstracts of 546 studies, we excluded 490 and considered 56 studies in full to assess their eligibility. Results Nine of these studies were included in the systematic review, eight of which were suitable for the meta-analysis. Conclusion It is suggested that auditory stimulation may influence the RMSSD, pNN50, SDNN, RRTri and SD2 indices of HRV in healthy adults with normal hearing.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the relationship between birth weight and the autonomic nervous system in adulthood through a systematic review. Data source: This is a systematic review of publications without limitation of year and language. We included studies involving the autonomic nervous system and birth weight in adults. Manuscripts were selected based on electronic searches of Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Web of Science Cochrane Library and Scopus databases, using “Autonomic Nervous System” OR “Heart Rate” OR “Heart Rate Variability” AND “Birth Weight” as a search strategy. This review is registered on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews — PROSPERO (ID: CRD42020165622). Data synthesis: We found 894 articles; 215 were excluded for duplicity. Of the remaining 679 studies, 11 remained. Two were excluded because they did not specifically treat the autonomic nervous system or birth weight. There were nine publications, two cohort and seven cross-sectional studies. The main findings were that extreme, very low, low or high birth weight may have some impact on the autonomic nervous system in adult life. Conclusions: Birth weight outside the normality rate may have a negative influence on the autonomic nervous system, causing autonomic dysfunction and increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases in adult life. Thus, the importance of the follow-up of health professionals from pregnancy to gestation and throughout life, with preventive care being emphasized.

Objetivos Investigar os efeitos agudos da ingestão de BE sobre a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (VFC) recuperação cardiovascular após exercício aeróbico moderado em homens de diferentes capacidades cardiorrespiratórias. BackgroundAlthough there are a considerable number of clinical studies on nitrate (NO3) rich beetroot juice (BRJ) and hypertension, it is difficult to indicate the real effects of NO3 from BRJ on the BP of hypertensive patients because there are still no estimates of the effects of NO3 derived from BRJ on the BP of hypertension patients.ObjectiveTo clarify these effects, we developed a systematic literature review with a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs).DesignThe searches were accomplished through EMBASE, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and LILACS databases. The study included single or double-blinded RCTs and participants older than 18 years with hypertension [systolic BP (SBP) > 130 mmHg and diastolic BP (DBP) > 80 mmHg]. NO3 BRJ was required to be consumed in a format that possibly blinded participants/researchers. These studies should also report the SBP and DBP values (mmHg) measured before and after the treatment. Risk of Bias tools and GRADE were enforced.ResultsSeven studies were included (218 participants). BRJ intervention time ranged from 3 to 60 days with daily dosages of 70–250 mL of BRJ. After the intervention with NO3 from BRJ, SBP underwent significant changes (p < 0.001) of −4.95 (95% CI: −8.88; −1.01) (GRADE: ⊕⊕⊕○ Moderate), but not for DBP (p = 0.06) −0.90 mmHg (95% CI: −3.16; 1.36) (GRADE: ⊕⊕⊕○ Moderate), compared to the control group.ConclusionsThe NO3 derived from BRJ reduces SBP, but not DBP in patients with arterial hypertension.Systematic Review Registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?RecordID=269339.

Introduction: The elderly population grows globally every day, and along with it the incidence of high blood pressure also grows, following these data scientists seek tools to improve the health of this population, a widely used tool for assessing cardiovascular function is the heart rate variability(HRV), that is a mecanism that allows the investigation of oscillations in the intervals between consecutive heart beats (RR intervals). There are already studies on the autonomic nervous system in the elderly population, however, these studies investigated normotensive patients and there is little research in hypertensive patients. Aim: To compare the cardiac autonomic modulation between healthy elderly and hypertensive elderly. Method: The total sample was 80 elderly people- 40 healthy elderly and 40 elderly (HBP). Anthropometric data, HRV analysis and IPAQ questionnaire were collected. For the analysis of cardiac modulation data in the time domain (pNN50, SDNN and RMSSD) and frequency domain (LF and HF). The geometric analysis (RRtri, TINN, SD1, SD2 and SD1/SD2 ratios). Results: In the time domain the MeanRR index presented a HAS increase 832.35 ± 104.46 ms vs control 782.73 ± 112.78 ms (p = 0.040). In the SDNN, there was a 58.35ms decrease vs the SAH 43.15 ms (p = 0.030). In the frequency domain, HF decreased control 247.00 ms2 vs HAS 157.00 ms2 (p = 0.002). In the geometric, the TINN and SD2 in the HAS group decreased in relation to the control from 203.38 ± 80.26 ms to 161.83 ± 53.25 ms (p = 0.018) and from 71.95 ms to 59.40 ms (p = 0.051). The mean SD1/SD2 ratio showed an increase between the Control and SAH groups from 0.22 ± 0.10 to 4.09 ± 1.18 and there was a statistical difference (p = 0.001). Conclusion: Hypertensive elderly patients present decreased heart rate variability and decreased parasympathetic modulation when compared to normotensive elderly.

Abstract The post-exercise recovery period is associated with changes in autonomic modulation, which can promote an intercurrent-favorable environment. Caffeine has the ability to release catecholamines, but its effects after exercises is little explored. The present study aims to evaluate the acute effects of caffeine on the autonomic control and cardiorespiratory parameters after moderate intensity aerobic exercise. 32 young males (23,59 ± 3,45 years) were submitted to two protocols: Placebo and Caffeine, consisting of 15 minutes of rest, 30 minutes of exercise on a treadmill to 60% on VO2peak, followed by 60 minutes of recovery. A ansiedade é caracterizada pelo sentimento de tensão, nervosismo, apreensão e preocupação que pode alterar a modulação do sistema nervoso autônomo sobre a condução elétrica ligada ao coração, determinando a intensidade nos batimentos cardíacos modificando a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca que é um importante indicador de condições normais e patológicas. Assim, o objetivo do estudo foi analisar a relação existente entre a ansiedade e o processo de regulação autonômica cardíaca. Este estudo trata-se de uma revisão integrativa desenvolvido por meio de buscas nas bases de dados da Lilacs, Medline e SciELO, com os descritores em ciências da saúde e operador booleano: ansiedade AND frequência cardíaca e, ansiedade AND sistema nervoso autônomo. A busca foi realizada durante o mês de setembro de 2017, sendo incluídos artigos disponíveis na íntegra; em português e inglês e; publicados nos últimos 06 anos. Excluiu-se artigos que não fossem originais, teses, dissertações e monografias. Obteve-se um total de 10 artigos, nos quais observou-se que a ansiedade altera a resposta autonômica, assim quando o corpo entra em tensão, aumentase a frequência cardíaca, o predomínio do sistema simpático e no relaxamento ocorre o domínio parassimpático. Assim indivíduos portadores de ansiedade apresentam menor variação na frequência cardíaca e possuem uma capacidade menor de interação social. Com isto, evidencia-se uma baixa adaptação do sistema nervoso autônomo em casos de ansiedade, sendo que a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca encontra-se reduzida; condição esta que pode ser classificada como patológica.

Hypertension is a multifactorial clinical condition with a prevalence in Brazil of 30% in adults over 20 years and 35.8 % in men, who are more exposed to risk factors and attend fewer the health services. The objective of this research was to investigate the control of blood pressure in hypertensive men, assisted by the Primary Health Care Services in two cities in the state of Paraíba and to identify the relationship between modifiable risk factors and sociodemographic factors with the control of blood pressure levels. This comparative study with a quantitative approach, descriptive analysis, applying logistic regression. It was verified that most hypertensive men in the cities studied, it is not being monitored by the authorities and has uncontrolled blood pressure. They are over 60 years, of non-white race, overweight / obese, smokers and non-drinkers. The variables that keep relation with pressure control are race, overweight / obesity and physical inactivity. We conclude that hypertension is a serious public health problem that requires all users, professionals and managers to change their attitude in tackling this problem. To control blood pressure, it is necessary the monitoring of the users by the teams of health services. It is also necessary to intensify actions focused on physical activities and healthy eating, as well as link the men to health services, thus promoting early diagnosis, a reorganization in operating the attendance, record, consultation time and the strengthening of health education activities.

Introduction: Impact noise is characterized by acoustic energy peaks that last less than a second, at intervals of more than 1 s. Objective: To quantify the levels of impact noise to which police officers are exposed during activities at the shooting range and to evaluate the attenuation of the hearing protector. Methods: Measurements were performed in the shooting range of a military police department. An SV 102 audiodosimeter (Svantek) was used to measure sound pressure levels. Two microphones were used simultaneously: one external and one insertion type; the firearm used was a 0.40 Taurus® rimless pistol. Results: The values obtained with the external microphone were 146 dBC (peak), and a maximum sound level of 129.4 dBC (fast). The results obtained with the insertion microphone were 138.7dBC (peak), and a maximum sound level of 121.6 dBC (fast). Conclusion: The findings showed high levels of sound pressure in the shooting range, which exceeded the maximum recommended noise (120 dBC), even when measured through the insertion microphone. Therefore, alternatives to improve the performance of hearing protection should be considered.

Pheochromocytoma and Ganglioneuroblastoma are separate diseases and a rare combination in which the diagnosis can only be confirmed by pathological examination after tumor excision. We reported here a case of ganglioneuroblastoma encapsulated in pheochromocytoma. The patient is a woman, 73 years old, hypertensive, with hypothyroidism, associated for 15 years with hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia, which had frequent complaints of low back pain. She underwent magnetic resonance and the findings were consistent with the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. After surgery, anatomic, pathologic and immunohistochemistry analysis confirmed the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma composed by small ganglioneuroblastoma representation with the identification of small focus of infiltration of the adrenal capsule and adipose tissue by pheochromocytoma. This rare association can instigate the discussion of methods of diagnosis, more effective and more appropriate treatments for each patient.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is characterized by progressive muscle weakness that can lead to disability. Owing to functional difficulties faced by individuals with DMD, the use of assistive technology is essential to provide or facilitate functional abilities. In DMD, cardiac autonomic dysfunction has been reported in addition to musculoskeletal impairment. Consequently, the objective was to investigate acute cardiac autonomic responses, by Heart Rate Variability (HRV), during computer tasks in subjects with DMD.HRV was assessed by linear and nonlinear methods, using the heart rate monitor Polar RS800CX chest strap Electrocardiographic measuring device. Then, 45 subjects were included in the group with DMD and 45 in the healthy Typical Development (TD) control group. They were assessed for twenty minutes at rest sitting, and five minutes after undergoing a task on the computer.Individuals with DMD had a statistically significant lower parasympathetic cardiac modulation at rest when compared to the control group, which further declined when undergoing the tasks on the computer.DMD patients presented decreased HRV and exhibited greater intensity of cardiac autonomic responses during computer tasks characterized by vagal withdrawal when compared to the healthy TD control subjects.

Objetivo: criar um Sistema de Aquisição de baixo custo, otimizando um dispositivo de fabricação própria. Método: Para tanto, foi idealizado um sistema dedicado, o qual é alimentado por uma bateria central de 12V. A ponte completa de “Wheatstone” é alimentada pela bateria central, regulada em 9V. Resultados: O sinal dos extensômetros apresenta uma variação de 0 a 30 mV, o qual é amplificado e filtrado por um Condicionador de Sinais de fabricação própria, usando um LM 324. O sinal elétrico então passa a variar de 0 a 5V, que serão tratados em uma entrada analógica de um Microcontrolador PIC. Os testes para registro e interpretação dos dados ocorrem através do software MyOpenLab. Conclusão: O trabalho está em andamento e os primeiros resultados sugerem que o sistema será capaz de mensurar a força muscular de forma precisa e com custo reduzido. Method: For this purpose was designed a system which is powered by a 12V battery center. The full bridge of "Wheatstone" is powered by the central battery set to 9V. Results: The sign of the strain has a range of 0 to 30 mV which is amplified filtered by a signal conditioner own manufacturing using an LM 324. The electrical signal then passes to vary from 0 to5V which will be processed in an analog input of PIC microcontroller. Tests for the registration and interpretation of data are through software MyOpenLab. Conclusion: The work is in progress and initial results suggest that the system will be able to measure muscular strength accurately and cost-effective. Introdução: O diabetes mellitus gestacional (DMG) é uma alteração patológica do metabolismo energético materno desencadeado pela incapacidade da gestante produzir quantidades suficientes de insulina para compensar a intolerância à glicose desencadeada pela ação do hormônio lactogênio placentário (HPL). Tendo em vista que os níveis plasmáticos do HPL são proporcionais à massa da placenta e que eles são máximos próximo ao período em que a placenta adquire seu maior tamanho e período que a hiperglicemia se manifesta na gestante com DMG, é possível inferir que talvez exista correlação entre a massa placentária e essa doença. Objetivo: Avaliar se existe correlação entre o DMG e a massa placentária. Métodos: Pesquisa descritiva, transversal e com abordagem quantitativa, que foi realizada em um hospital público de Santa Catarina, Brasil. A pesquisa incluiu 20 mulheres grávidas, 10 com e 10 sem DMG, que concordaram em participar do estudo. Resultados: A média das massas das placentas do Grupo Controle foi de 505,63±12,18 g, enquanto a do grupo com DMG foi de 561,00 ±14,25 g. Conclusão: Este estudo sugere que a massa placentária das gestantes com DMG é significativamente maior do que a massa das placentas das gestantes hígidas.

The objective was to analyze rates of stroke-related mortality and incidence of hospital admissions in Brazilians aged 15 to 49 years according to region and age group between 2008 and 2012.Secondary analysis was performed in 2014 using data from the Hospital and Mortality Information Systems and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Stroke was defined by ICD, 10th revision (I60-I64). Crude and standardized mortality (WHO reference) and incidence of hospital admissions per 100,000 inhabitants, stratified by region and age group, were estimated. Absolute and relative frequencies; and linear regression were also used. The software used was Stata 11.0.There were 35,005 deaths and 131,344 hospital admissions for stroke in Brazilians aged 15-49 years old between 2008 and 2012. Mortality decreased from 7.54 (95% CI 7.53; 7.54) in 2008 to 6.32 (95% CI 6.31; 6.32) in 2012 (β = -0.27, p = 0.013, r2 = 0.90). During the same time, incidence of hospital admissions stabilized: 24.67 (95% CI 24.66; 24.67) in 2008 and 25.11 (95% CI 25.10; 25.11) in 2012 (β = 0.09, p = 0.692, r2 = 0.05). There was a reduction in mortality in all Brazilian regions and in the age group between 30 and 49 years. Incidence of hospitalizations decreased in the South, but no significant decrease was observed in any age group.We observed a decrease in stroke-related mortality, particularly in individuals over 30 years old, and stability of the incidence of hospitalizations; and also regional variation in stroke-related hospital admission incidence and mortality among Brazilian young adults.

Este estudo objetivou atualizar os conhecimentos em relação à utilização da ventilação mecânica não-invasiva (VMNI) no pós-operatório de cirurgia cardíaca e identificar se há indícios da superioridade de uma forma de modalidade de VMNI em relação à outra. Foi realizada revisão da literatura entre 2006 a 2011, a partir das bases de dados PubMed, SciELO e Lilacs, utilizando os descritores respiração artificial, pressão positiva contínua nas vias aéreas, ventilação com pressão positiva intermitente e cirurgia cardíaca, e seus correspondentes na língua inglesa, os quais foram pesquisados em cruzamentos. A partir dos critérios adotados, foram selecionados nove artigos, dos quais seis demonstraram aplicações de VMNI, por meio de modalidades como pressão positiva contínua nas vias aéreas, pressão positiva com dois níveis pressóricos e respiração com pressão positiva intermitente, no pós-operatório de cirurgia cardíaca, e, três realizaram comparações entre as diferentes modalidades. As modalidades de VMNI descritas na literatura foram utilizadas com resultados satisfatórios. Estudos que comparam diferentes modalidades são escassos, contudo alguns demonstraram superioridade de uma modalidade de VMNI, como é o caso da respiração com pressão positiva intermitente na reversão da hipoxemia e da pressão positiva com dois níveis pressóricos na melhora da oxigenação, da frequência respiratória e frequência cardíaca desses pacientes, em comparação a outras modalidades.This study aimed to update knowledge regarding to noninvasive ventilation (NVI) on postoperative of cardiac surgery in addition at investigating if exists superiority of any modalities NVI in relation to the others. The literature review was performed on the period between 2006 and 2011, on PubMed, SciELO and Lilacs databases crossing the keywords: artificial respiration, continuous positive airway pressure, intermittent positive-pressure ventilation, cardiac surgery and their corresponding in English. Based on the criteria adopted, nine articles were selected being six of them use NVI, through the modalities such as continuous positive airway pressure, positive pressure with bilevel pressure and intermittent positive-pressure ventilation in postoperative of cardiac surgery; only three of them performed comparisons between different modalities. The NVI modalities that were described on the literature had showed satisfactory results. A few studies compare different NVI modalities; however some of them showed superiority in relation to the others, such as the intermittent positive-pressure ventilation to threat hypoxemia and to positive pressure with bilevel pressure to increase oxygenation, respiratory rate and heart rate in these patients, when compared with other modalities.

INTRODUÇÃO: Pacientes após cirurgia cardíaca são comumente tratados com diuréticos para controle de volume plasmático. A preocupação de distúrbios hipocalêmicos em adultos antes, durante ou após a cirurgia já foi ressaltada anteriormente, visto o risco de arritmias cardíacas. Clinicamente, a diluição da solução de potássio (K+) para administração por via intravenosa, em situações que requerem a sua reposição é realizada utilizando-se soro fisiológico (SF) ao invés de soro glicosado 5% (SG5%), possivelmente em vista de poder ocorrer estimulação da secreção de insulina, que interferiria sobre a qualidade da reposição de K+. Porém, não está comprovado experimentalmente se o SF e SG5% poderiam realmente interferir na qualidade da reposição de potássio em ratos com hipocalemia. OBJETIVO: Analisar a influência da reposição de K+ diluído em diferentes veículos sobre as concentrações plasmáticas de K+([K+]p) em ratos submetidos a hipocalemia induzida por furosemida. MÉTODOS: Ratos Wistar adultos foram divididos em quatro grupos: K++SF, K++SG, SF e SG. Foi realizada a canulação da veia jugular para reposição e da veia femoral para coleta de sangue. O diurético furosemida na dose de 50mg/kg foi usado para induzir hipocalemia, foi analisado nível plasmático de potássio 24 h antes da injeção de furosemida, 24 h pós-indução e 30 minutos pós-reposição. RESULTADOS: Os níveis da [K+] pós-injeção de furosemida sofreram redução, comparado aos valores basais (pré-furosemida) em todos os grupos. Entretanto, os níveis [K+] retornaram aos valores basais tanto nos grupos que receberam K++SF ou K++SG, o que não foi observado nos grupos que receberam apenas SF e SG. Quanto ao Na+ plasmático, somente o grupo K+SF apresentou aumento após reposição. CONCLUSÃO: A reposição de K+ diluído tanto em SF quanto SG parece não afetar a qualidade da reposição de K+ plasmático em ratosINTRODUCTION: Patients who undergo cardiac surgery are commonly treated with diuretic therapy for the management of volume overload. The concern of hypokalemia important in the adult population submitted to cardiac surgery has been described. Intravenous potassium (K+) replacement dilution is only recommended with sodium chloride 0.9% solution (SF0.9%), likely due to the putative effects of glucose solution 5% (SG5%) on insulin secretion, which influence K+ replacement quality. However, it is not yet experimentally proved the influence of SF0.9% and SG5% on K+ replacement quality. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of different vehicles of K+ replacement on blood K+ levels in furosemide hypokalemic rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats divided into four groups: K+SF, K+SG, SF and SG. Jugular vein cannulation for K+ replacement and femoral vein cannulation for blood analysis. Furosemide (50mg/kg) to induce hypokalemia. We prepared the following solutions: vehicle 1.6mL (SF0.9% or SG5%) + 0.4 mL de K+ (19.1%) and for control groups only vehicle 2 mL. Furosemide (50 mg/kg) was used to induce hypokalaemia, it was analyzed potassium plasmatic levels 24 hours before furosemide injection, 24 hours after furosemide injection and 30 minutes after post-replacement. RESULTS: There was no significative difference in blood K+ levels before furosemide administration, after hypokalemic induction and after K+ replacement among all groups. Rats (n=40) were divided into four groups: 1) Control group (CON); 2) Fluoxetine (FLU); 3) Induced hypothermia (IH) and; 4) Induced hypothermia treated with fluoxetine (IHF). Animals of FLU group were treated by the administration of gavages containing 0.75 mg/kg/day fluoxetine during 40 days. The induced hypothermia was obtained by maintaining the groups 3 and 4 in a freezer at -8ºC for 4 hours. The animals were sacrificed and fragments of the right ventricle (RV) were removed and processed prior to performing electron microscopic analysis. RESULTS: The ultrastructural changes in cardiomyocytes were quantified through the number of mitochondrial cristae pattern (cristolysis). The CON (3.85%), FLU (4.47%) and IHF (8.4%) groups showed a normal cellular structure aspect with preserved cardiomyocytes cytoarchitecture and continuous sarcoplasmic membrane integrity. On the other hand, the IH (34.4%) group showed mitochondrial edema and lysis in cristae. CONCLUSION: The ultrastructural analysis revealed that fluoxetine strongly prevents mitochondrial cristolysis in rat heart, suggesting a protector effect under cold stress condition.OBJETIVO: Analisar os efeitos da fluoxetina sobre a estrutura mitocondrial do ventrículo direito de ratos expostos ao estresse pelo frio. MÉTODOS: Os procedimentos do estudo foram realizados em ratos Wistar-EPM (250-300g) machos. Os ratos (n=40) foram divididos em quatro grupos: 1) Controle (CON); 2) Fluoxetina (FLU); 3) Induzidos à hipotermia (IH) e; 4) Induzidos à hipotermia tratados com fluoxetina (IHF). O grupo FLU foi tratado com gavagem contendo 0,75 mg/kg/dia de fluoxetina durante 40 dias. O estresse induzido pelo frio foi realizado mantendo os grupos 3 e 4 em um freezer (-8ºC) por quatro horas. Os animais foram sacrificados e fragmentos do ventrículo direito (VD) foram removidos e processados antes de serem conduzidos para a microscopia eletrônica. RESULTADOS: As alterações ultraestruturais dos cardiomiócitos foram quantificadas pelo número padrão de cristas mitocondriais (cristólises). Os grupos CON (3,85%), FLU (4,47%) e IHF (8,4%) mostraram aspecto normal de suas estruturas celulares com a citoarquitetura dos cardiomiócitos preservada com integridade sarcoplasmática contínua. Por outro lado, o grupo IH (34,4%) apresentou edema mitocondrial e lise nas cristas. CONCLUSÃO: A análise ultraestrutural revelou que a fluoxetina previne fortemente cristólises mitocondriais em miocárdio de ratos, sugerindo possível efeito protetor na condição de estresse induzido pelo frio.

INTRODUCTION: Total body induced hypothermia and myocardial cooling are effective methods regarding myocardial protection during heart surgery and ischemia. It is described in previous studies that extreme low temperature exposure causes mitochondrial cristae and myofilament disarrangement in cardiomyocytes, however, no investigation has analyzed the effects of cold stress on nuclear size of cardiomyocytes. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of acute cold stress exposure on the nuclear size of cardiomyocytes in rats. METHODS: The experimental study procedures were performed on 300-310g adult male Wistar rats. Rats (n=20) were divided into two groups: 1) Control (CON) and; 2) Induced hypothermic (IH) group. Animals of IH group were exposed during 4 hours once at a controlled temperature of - 8ºC. It was performed histological analysis of liver and adrenal gland to examine the stress condition of animals. Cardiomyocytes nucleus size were examined by three independent investigators with the same and standardized criteria and analyzed by Bartko's intra-class correlation coefficient (R>0.75 = positive concordance). Student's t test was applied. Introduction: The use of psychoactive substances by the student population has been the object of various studies in Brazil. Objective: To determine the prevalence of substance use among students. Methods: Quantitative study with a closed questionnaire based on standardized assessment instruments was developed. It consists of questions related to types of psychoactive substance use, abuse, frequency and duration of use, self-criticism regarding the use, consequences of use in relation to health, and misdemeanors committed under the influence of psychoactive substances. The sample included the participation of 268 students. A total of 183 (68.3%) questionnaires were analyzed, and only those with positive result for substance abuse at some point in life, the remainder, 85 (31%) questionnaires, had negative responses to psychoactive substances. Results: Students’ responses to the two years surveyed indicated that the first psychoactive substance used was alcohol (77.9%), followed by tobacco use (10.9%), and marijuana (7.6%). Of the students surveyed, 145 (79.2%) answered that still make use of psychoactive substances, and the current frequency of use varies from one or more times per week. When asked about the possibility of being or becoming drug addicts, 169 (92.3%) responded that they are not or will not become dependent. Conclusion: The results indicate the high rate of substance use among college students surveyed, and point to their contradiction to consider such psychoactive substances harmful to their health.

Introdução: O monitoramento da glicose pelo portador de diabetes melito é importante na prevenção de complicações clínicas. Objetivo: Comparar a intensidade de dor nas punções em lóbulo da orelha e polpa digital e a interferência do local de punção sobre os valores do exame de glicemia capilar. Método: Estudo exploratório, descritivo e quantitativo. Participaram 70 portadores de diabetes melito. A monitorização foi realizada ao acaso, com glicosímetro G-TECH Free 1®. Para avaliação da intensidade da dor, utilizou-se uma escala numérica graduada em 0 (ausente), 1 (muito leve), 2 (leve), 3 (moderada) e 4 (intensa). Resultados: Para os portadores de diabetes melito Tipo 1, a glicemia média foi de 274,38±22,64 mg/dL para lóbulo da orelha e de 298,33±4,58 mg/dL para polpa digital. Para DM Tipo 2, os valores foram 187,19±9,85 mg/dL para lóbulo da orelha e 195,41±10,47 mg/dL para polpa digital. Houve correlação entre as glicemias encontradas nos dois locais de punção. Para os portadores de diabetes melito Tipo 1, observou-se ausência de dor (0) em lóbulo da orelha e polpa digital com 1,86±0,12. Para portadores de diabetes melito Tipo 2, obteve-se que a média de intensidade de dor para lóbulo da orelha foi de 0,06±0,03 e para polpa digital, 1,75±0,09. Conclusão: Houve diferença estatística quanto ao índice glicêmico gerado pelos diferentes locais. Menor intensidade de dor foi observada quando o teste é realizado no lóbulo da orelha, sendo uma boa opção para o local de exame.

Introduction: The literature has shown that musical stimulation can influence the cardiovascular system, however, the neurophysiological aspects of this influence are not yet fully elucidated. Objective: This study describes the influence of music on the neurophysiological mechanisms in the human body, specifically the variable blood pressure, as well as the neural mechanisms of music processing. Methods: Searches were conducted in Medline, PEDro, Lilacs and SciELO using the intersection of the keyword “music” with the keyword descriptors “blood pressure” and “neurophysiology”. Results: There were selected 11 articles, which indicated that music interferes in some aspects of physiological variables. Conclusion: Studies have indicated that music interferes on the control of blood pressure, heart and respiratory rate, through possible involvement of limbic brain areas which modulate hypothalamic-pituitary functions. Further studies are needed in order to identify the mechanisms by which this influence occurs.

The literature indicates stress as a response of the organism to a stimulation that requires enormous efforts to adapt to the changes in the environment and the body. When an individual is subjected to stress, the autonomic nervous system is triggered, the sympathetic pathway is activated, and the parasympathetic system is suppressed, which exerts several effects on the cardiovascular system and affects heart rate variability. This research aimed to conduct a literature review to find and analyze the studies that address clearly the implications of stress on heart rate variability. The methodology employed was an active search in the databases SciELO, PubMed and Lilacs. The results were five articles, most of which suggest a relationship between stress and heart rate variability. We observed that the majority of the studies indicated a strong association between stress and cardiac autonomic activity. The stress is present in the daily activities of the population, especially in labor. The subject is vast, however, were observed in the references the effects of stress on the body making it vulnerable to diseases. Thus, this information may contribute to the aid of preventive strategies against stress and diseases of the cardiovascular system.

ABSTRACTBACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:Pain is frequent in wards and impairs patients’ treatment and recovery, especially orthopedic patients. So, this study aimed at evaluating pre and postoperative analgesic adequacy in patients submitted to orthopedic surgeries, and at looking for possible variables predicting the analgesic adequacy of such patients in both moments.METHODS:This is a quasi-experimental study with two groups, orthopedic pre and postoperative periods, carried out through structured interview, physical evaluation and medical record analysis, in the Surgical Clinic of the Teaching Hospital, School of Medicine, Itajuba/MG, developed with patients in the pre and postoperative periods of orthopedic surgery.RESULTS:Participated in the study 31 patients, all of them with medical prescription of some analgesic drug, being weak opioids those most frequently prescribed in 84% of preoperative cases, increasing to 87% in the postoperative period; 39% had no preoperative pain, decreasing to 36% in the postoperative period. On the other hand, 39% of patients had moderate to severe pain in the preoperative period, increasing to 45% in the postoperative period, being that 74% had analgesic adequacy in the preoperative period, increasing to 81% in the postoperative period.CONCLUSION:Most patients of this study had adequate analgesia in the pre and postoperative periods of orthopedic surgery. In our sample, selected variables have not adequately predicted analgesic adequacy in both moments of the orthopedic surgery.

JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: A dor lombar é uma doença comum em diversos países industrializados, constituindo-se em problema de saúde pública e incapacidade, principalmente para a população economicamente ativa. O objetivo deste estudo foi agrupar e atualizar conhecimentos em relação aos exercícios de controle motor na dor lombar. CONTEÚDO: Foi realizada revisão da literatura nas bases de dados Cochrane, Medline (Pubmed) e PEDro, no período de 2000 a 2010, utilizando os descritores low back pain, stabilization, multifidus, transversus, exercise e training. Foram encontrados seis ensaios clínicos aleatorizados, que demonstraram que esses exercícios podem ser indicados na dor lombar aguda como forma de prevenção de recidivas, e indicações para sua aplicação na redução da dor e incapacidade na dor lombar crônica. CONCLUSÃO: Os exercícios de controle motor não melhoram a dor e incapacidades nos casos agudos, porém, eficazes nos casos crônicos a fim de aliviar o quadro álgico, reduzir incapacidades e melhorar a qualidade de vida.

INTRODUÇÃO: O sistema nervoso autônomo (SNA) pode ser investigado de forma não invasiva a partir da análise da variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (VFC) e sua utilização para avaliação do SNA tem contribuído com várias áreas da saúde, dentre elas, a fisioterapia. OBJETIVOS: Reunir estudos publicados em periódicos de circulação nacional da área que abordassem a utilização da VFC em fisioterapia, a fim de fornecer uma atualização dos achados para a área. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram selecionados, na lista de periódicos do WebQualis da área 21, todos os periódicos de circulação nacional que utilizam a palavra fisioterapia em seu título, com disponibilidade livre e textos completos em algum sítio da internet e que possuíssem classificação maior ou igual a B2. Com esses critérios, foram selecionados artigos das seguintes revistas: Revista Brasileira de Fisioterapia, Fisioterapia e Pesquisa e Fisioterapia em Movimento. Para essa busca, foram utilizados os descritores: "sistema nervoso autônomo", "sistema nervoso simpático", "fisioterapia" e "variabilidade da frequência cardíaca". RESULTADOS: A busca resultou em 19 artigos, sendo 17 ensaios clínicos e dois relatos de caso. CONCLUSÃO: A VFC tem sido utilizada no âmbito da fisioterapia como recurso para avaliação de intervenções fisioterapêuticas, como forma de investigação de condições patológicas comuns à prática clínica e para interpretação de condições fisiológicas. A sua utilização é feita principalmente pela especialidade de fisioterapia cardiorrespiratória.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Brazil is undergoing a period of epidemiological transition associated with demographic and nutritional changes. The prevalence of obesity is also increasing in children and is causing numerous health problems that are becoming public health issues. The aim here was to evaluate the prevalence of overweight among children of two and three years of age. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study in municipal day care centers in Taubaté, state of São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: Weight and height measurements were made on 447 preschool children forming a probabilistic randomized sample. Their body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Their nutritional status was classified using the World Health Organization reference cutoff points (2006). Their mean weight, height and BMI were compared according to their age and sex. RESULTS: The mean values for the final sample (n = 447) were as follows: mean age: 38.6 months (± 3.5) and Z scores for: weight/height (W/H): 0.50 (± 1.22); height/age: -0.03 (± 1.07); weight/age (W/A): 0.51 (± 1.23); and BMI: 0.51(± 1.23). The prevalence of overweight children (BMI > 1 z) was 28.86%, while the prevalence of underweight children (BMI < -2 z) was 0.89%. There were no differences in mean BMI among the two and three-year age groups (P = 0.66). CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of overweight was observed in the sample of two and three-year-old children, with practically no malnutrition, thus showing that a significant nutritional transition may already be occurring, even in medium-sized cities of developing countries.
