The article aims to focus attention on the study of blessed women and holy women through the documentation found in diocesan archives and belonging to the series of canonization processes. With the regulation of the process, narrative organization gave way to legal defense, confrontation to analysis, and narrative to texts that had evidentiary value, and all this gave rise to a mine of information not only about the lives of the blessed and holy women, but also about the society in which they had lived. This essay aims to reconstruct the history of the Cistercian monastery of S. Martino al Monte, located near Viterbo (Lazio), and focuses on its relations with the papacy and the papal curia during the 13th century. The analysis of the monastery’s documentation, especially papal records, has revealed that the first half of the century was a fruitful time for the Cistercian community. The monastery strengthened its relations with the Roman curia thanks to the personality of some eminent abbots who were involved in the workings of the curia, and to the support of some cardinals who promoted the Cistercian coenobium, subsidized its building renovation, and sponsored the abbey's interests in the curia. The monastery also enlarged its patrimonial endowment and reorganized its administrative and accounting system to improve the management of its possessions.

Located in Tuscia north of Rome, Viterbo was one of the most significant city of the 'Patrimony of San Pietro in Tuscia', one of the administrative districts of the Papal States. The Municipality of Viterbo, by virtue of an ancient custom, transposed into the local statutory law and confirmed with papal approval, was domina juris pascendi and, in this role, could demand that it be paid the tax for the exploitation of the pasture (fida or affida). This writing illustrates -- also thanks to the examination of unpublished documentation -- some controversies of which the Viterbo Community was the protagonist against those who questioned its dominion over some estates and against those who claimed to be exempt from the payment of the fida. • The geometric model influences the results of the structural analysis conducted in architectural heritage in terms of stress values and stress paths. • Too much stylised models can produce unreliable results. • Damages that cause changes in geometry must be considered when the geometric model is made. Geometric models employed for structural analyses are usually strongly simplified, in order to make easier and faster the numerical solving. Sometimes this approach is valid and convenient as far as it does not influence the analysis results. However, depending on the circumstances and the objectives of the analysis, the model has to be accurately and precisely represented to capture the necessary outputs. This is the case with architectural heritage. In fact, in this field, the surveyed objects are often characterised by complex forms and remarkable damages, which can affect the geometry significantly. Nowadays, many techniques are available to obtain very detailed models of the surface of the object, but they do not allow to consider also interior damages or the constructive features. This information can be obtained through a careful knowledge and anamnesis of the object to study, based on visual inspection and instrumental measures. In this way, the creation of the model to undergoes to a structural analysis, consists in a synthetic operation conducted by the operator in a conscious way. This paper aims to prove that the results of a structural analyses can change significantly, depending on the accuracy and the level of detail of the model. The study was conducted on a basic building element, that is a column, really existing and belonging to a monumental fountain. The column was modelled in five different ways which differ in the level of detail. An ultrasonic test was conducted on the real object to characterise cracks which were taken into account in the most accurate models. A comparison among the five models was done from a static and dynamic perspective, through the following analyses: static, buckling, modal and dynamic with response spectrum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Student mobility is a subject of very in-depth study in the urban sciences in the United States while it is little addressed in the literature on Europe, especially for Mediterranean countries such as Italy. The present paper focuses on Viterbo, a city located in the central part of Italy where there is a significant presence of university students. Welcoming more than 10,000 students, the Tuscia University in Viterbo is currently divided into seven Departments, ranging from Agricultural and Forestry sciences to linguistic and juridical studies. For this reason, the Tuscia University is appreciated for its graduate courses rather than the other neighbouring universities, such as Rome. Though the city of Viterbo is not infrastructurally well-connected and forces students to a difficult commute. Based on the limited literature in which student mobility is interrelated with issues affecting the spatial scale, a questionnaire was submitted to a sample of voluntary and anonymous students, which described their experiences giving insight into an intimate relationship between territorial networks and university reality. Results raised many topics of discussion, offering evidence, advantages and perspectives for Tuscia University, its territorial area and even the city of Viterbo.

The article offerts a short introduction to the history of medieval hospitals in Viterbo, as descripted by the main 19th century historical local testimonies. Viterbo, as well known to the historians of Middle Age, has been an important town in medieval Italian history; its centrality in the religious way to Rome is well testified by the numerous hospitals and assistance building, some of which, along the main pilgrimage routes, still surviving and well preserved. The Faculty of Agrarian Studies of the University of Tuscia was opened in academic year 1980-1981 to meet demands for advanced scientific and technical training in the agrarian and forestation sectors. From the outset, research was mainly devoted to understanding and solving problems on a world scale and eventually led to strong ties with many international experimental centres. Over the years, teaching activity expanded to include a large number of courses available not only at the main centre in Viterbo, but also in other centres elsewhere in the Lazio Region. With the advent of Italian Law L. 240/2010, the departmental structure of the Faculty of Agrarian Studies was reorganized and departments became responsible for coordination of teaching. The present study concerns Viterbo in the XIII-XIV centuries, when the city gained prominence and for many years vied with Rome for the attentions of popes and emperors. This was an age during which monasteries and convents flourished and the Dominican Santa Maria in Gradi, of which Cardinal Raniero Capocci of Viterbo was both prime mover and patron, was the greatest of these. The papal court often stayed in Viterbo, which was the major factor in broadening the city's horizons and encouraging debate on religious issues and beyond. Leading names in European culture and science came to Viterbo as a result, thereby enabling cultural life there to grow and encouraging visitors to see the city as another "high and mighty Rome". XIVth century Viterbo remained of central interest to popes and emperors. Strategic control of the city meant access to Rome from the north and it was also a refuge for popes or location to demonstrate their power, such as the solemn feast of Corpus Domini celebrated by Pius II in 1462. The XVth century saw major innovative developments in art and architecture, with such commissions as the Palace of Pietro Lunense, which may have been designed by Leon Battista Alberti, the Baths of Viterbo restored by Niccolò V, the transformations in urban planning introduced by Niccolò Perotti, Chancellor of the "Patrimonio" of S. Pietro in Tuscia, and the Mazzatosta chapel in S. Maria della Verità with frescoes by Lorenzo da Viterbo. The new culture of humanism was promoted in Viterbo by the major intellectuals who lived and taught there, such as Niccolò Perotti, Gaspare da Verona, Ottavio Cleofilo, Annio da Viterbo and Cantalicio.
