We investigate primordial magnetogenesis within a quantum bouncing model driven by a scalar field, focusing on various non-minimal couplings between the electromagnetic field and the scalar field. We test three cases: no coupling, a Cauchy coupling with gradual decay, and a Gaussian coupling with rapid fall-off. By exploring these scenarios, we assess a wide range of coupling strengths across different scales. The scalar field, with an exponential potential, behaves as pressureless matter in the asymptotic past of the contracting phase, as stiff matter around the bounce, and as dark energy during the expanding phase. Our findings reveal that, among the tested cases, only the Gaussian coupling can explain the generation of primordial magnetic fields on cosmological scales., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

The problem of finding a vacuum definition for a single quantum field in curved space-times is discussed under a new geometrical perspective. The phase space dynamics of the quantum field modes are mapped to curves in a 2-dimensional hyperbolic metric space, in which distances between neighbor points are shown to be proportional to the Bogoliubov coefficients associated with their corresponding mode solutions in phase space. The vacuum state for each mode is then defined as the unique trajectory from which all mapped phase space solutions move within thin annular regions around it. This property implies the stability of the vacuum state: solutions evolved from a point in this trajectory stay close to it as both evolve, and the particle creation is therefore minimized. The new approach is applied to the well-known cases of the time-independent dynamics, where the solutions draw circles around this curve, and when the adiabatic approximation is valid. The analysis is then extended to time-dependent cases in which the adiabatic approximation is not applicable, in the super-Hubble or low-frequency regimes. It is shown that stability trajectories can also be found in these situations, and stable quantum vacua can be obtained. This new formalism is applied to two situations: de Sitter space, where the Bunch-Davies vacuum is obtained in a completely different manner through an analysis in the super-Hubble regime, and in the context of cosmological bouncing models, in which the contracting phase is dominated by a cosmological constant in the asymptotic past. An old question surrounding bouncing models concerns their stability under vector perturbations. Considering perfect fluids or scalar fields, vector perturbations evolve kinematically as $a^{-2}$, where $a$ is the scale factor. Consequently, a definite answer concerning the bounce stability depends on an arbitrary constant, therefore, there is no definitive answer. In this paper, we consider a more general situation where the primeval material medium is a non-ideal fluid, and its shear viscosity is capable of producing torque oscillations, which can create and dynamically sustain vector perturbations along cosmic evolution. In this framework, one can set that vector perturbations have a quantum mechanical origin, coming from quantum vacuum fluctuations in the far past of the bouncing model, as it is done with scalar and tensor perturbations. Under this prescription, one can calculate their evolution during the whole history of the bouncing model, and precisely infer the conditions under which they remain linear before the expanding phase. It is shown that such linearity conditions impose constraints on the free parameters of bouncing models, which are mild, although not trivial, allowing a large class of possibilities. Such conditions impose that vector perturbations are also not observationally relevant in the expanding phase. The conclusion is that bouncing models are generally stable under vector perturbations. As they are also stable under scalar and tensor perturbations, we conclude that bouncing models are generally stable under perturbations originated from quantum vacuum perturbations in the far past of their contracting phase., Comment: 10 pages

We investigate a set of cosmological models for which the primordial power spectrum has a large-scale power deficit. The standard power-law spectrum is subject to long-wavelength modifications described by some new parameters, resulting in corrections to the anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background. The new parameters are fitted to different data sets: temperature only, temperature and polarization, the low-redshift determination of $H_0$, and baryonic acoustic oscillations. We discuss the statistical significance of the modified spectra, from both frequentist and Bayesian perspectives. Our analysis suggests motivations for considering models that break scalar-tensor consistency, or models with negligible power in the far super-Hubble limit. We present what appears to be substantial evidence for a new scale around 350 Mpc above which the primordial (scalar) power spectrum is sharply reduced by about 20%., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures

The standard model of cosmology, {\Lambda}CDM, is the simplest model that matches the current observations, but it relies on two hypothetical components, to wit, dark matter and dark energy. Future galaxy surveys and cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments will independently shed light on these components, but a joint analysis that includes cross-correlations will be necessary to extract as much information as possible from the observations. In this paper, we carry out a multi-probe analysis based on pseudo-spectra and test it on publicly available data sets. We use CMB temperature anisotropies and CMB lensing observations from Planck as well as the spectroscopic galaxy and quasar samples of SDSS-III/BOSS, taking advantage of the large areas covered by these surveys. We build a likelihood to simultaneously analyse the auto and cross spectra of CMB lensing and tracer overdensity maps before running Monte-Carlo Markov Chains (MCMC) to assess the constraining power of the combined analysis. We then add the CMB temperature anisotropies likelihood and obtain constraints on cosmological parameters ($H_0$, $\omega_b$, $\omega_c$, ${\ln10^{10}A_s}$, $n_s$ and $z_{re}$) and galaxy biases. We demonstrate that the joint analysis can additionally constrain the total mass of neutrinos ${\Sigma m_{\nu}}$ as well as the dark energy equation of state $w$ at once (for a total of eight cosmological parameters), which is impossible with either of the data sets considered separately. We analyze the Galileon ghost condensate implementation of a bouncing cosmological model in the presence of a non negligible anisotropic stress. We exhibit its structure, which we find to be far richer than previously thought. In particular, even restricting attention to a single set of underlying microscopic parameters, we obtain, numerically, many qualitatively different regimes: depending on the initial conditions on the scalar field leading the dynamics of the universe, the contraction phase can evolve directly towards a singularity, avoid it by bouncing once, or even bounce many times before settling into an ever-expanding phase. We investigate scalar particle creation in a set of bouncing models where the bounce occurs due to quantum cosmological effects described by the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. The scalar field can be either conformally or minimally coupled to gravity, and it can be massive or massless, without self interaction. The analysis is made for models containing a single radiation fluid, and for the more realistic case of models containing the usual observed radiation and dust fluids, which can fit most of the observed features of our Universe, including an almost scale invariant power spectrum of scalar cosmological perturbations. In the conformal coupling case, the particle production is negligible. In the minimal coupling case, for massive particles, the results point to the same physical conclusion within observational constraints: particle production is most important at the bounce energy scale, and it is not sensitive neither to its mass nor whether there is dust in the background model. The only caveat is the case where the particle mass is larger than the bounce energy scale. On the other hand, the energy density of produced massive particles depend on their masses and the energy scale of the bounce. For very large masses and deep bounces, this energy density may overcome that of the background. In the case of massless particles, the energy density of produced particles can become comparable to the background energy density only for bounces occurring at energy scales comparable to the Planck scale or above, which lies beyond the scope of this paper: we expect that the simple Wheeler-DeWitt approach we are using should be valid only at scales some few orders of magnitude below the Planck energy. Nevertheless, in the case in which dust is present, there is an infrared divergence, which becomes important only for scales much larger than today's Hubble radius., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

We present and expand the simplest possible quantum cosmological bouncing model already discussed in previous works: the trajectory formulation of quantum mechanics applied to cosmology (through the Wheeler-De Witt equation) in the FLRW minisuper- space without spatial curvature. The initial conditions that were previously assumed were such that the wave function would not change its functional form but instead provide a dynamics to its parameters. Here, we consider a more general situation, in practice con- sisting of modified Gaussian wave functions, aiming at obtaining a non singular bounce from a contracting phase. Whereas previous works consistently obtain very symmetric bounces, we find that it is possible to produce highly non symmetric solutions, and even cases for which multiple bounces naturally occur. Quantization of arbitrary free scalar fields in spatially homogeneous and isotropic space-times is considered. The quantum representation allowing a unitary evolution for the fields is taken as a requirement for the theory. Studying the group of linear canonical transformations, we show the relations between unitary evolution and choice of canonical variables. From these relations we obtain the conditions on the Hamiltonian such that there are canonical variables for which the field has unitary evolution. We then compute the linear transformation leading to these variables, also proving that they are unique. We obtain these results by developing the asymptotic analysis of the fields using the action angle variables, which proves to be a generalization of the usual Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation. These tools allow us to re-frame the adiabatic vacuum condition in a extensible format by using the action angle variables to relate these vacuum choices to those where the particle number density does not depend on angle (fast) variables. Finally, we develop a larger set of canonical variables relating the adiabatic vacuum conditions with the smearing of the quantum fields. It has been shown that a contracting universe with a dust-like ($w \approx 0$) fluid may provide an almost scale invariant spectrum for the gravitational scalar perturbations. As the universe contracts, the amplitude of such perturbations are amplified. The gauge invariant variable $\Phi$ develops a growing mode which becomes much larger than the constant one around the bounce phase. The constant mode has its amplitude fixed by Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) normalization, thus the amplitude of the growing mode can become much larger than 1. In this paper, we first show that this is a general feature of bouncing models, since we expect that general relativity should be valid in all scales away from the bounce. However, in the Newtonian gauge, the variable $\Phi$ gives the value of the metric perturbation $\phi$, raising doubts on the validity of the linear perturbative regime at the bounce. In order to address this issue, we obtain a set of necessary conditions for the perturbative series to be valid along the whole history of the model, and we show that there is a gauge in which all these conditions are satisfied, for a set of models, if the constant mode is fixed by COBE normalization. It is believed that soon after the Planck era, space time should have a semi-classical nature. According to this, the escape from General Relativity theory is unavoidable. Two geometric counter-terms are needed to regularize the divergences which come from the expected value. These counter-terms are responsible for a higher derivative metric gravitation. Starobinsky idea was that these higher derivatives could mimic a cosmological constant. In this work it is considered numerical solutions for general Bianchi I anisotropic space-times in this higher derivative theory. The approach is ``experimental'' in the sense that there is no attempt to an analytical investigation of the results. It is shown that for zero cosmological constant $\Lambda=0$, there are sets of initial conditions which form basins of attraction that asymptote Minkowski space. The complement of this set of initial conditions form basins which are attracted to some singular solutions. It is also shown, for a cosmological constant $\Lambda> 0$ that there are basins of attraction to a specific de Sitter solution. This result is consistent with Starobinsky's initial idea. The complement of this set also forms basins that are attracted to some type of singular solution. Because the singularity is characterized by curvature scalars, it must be stressed that the basin structure obtained is a topological invariant, i.e., coordinate independent., Comment: Version accepted for publication in PRD.
