Phonons are quasi-particles associated with mechanical vibrations in materials, at the root of the propagation of sound, elastic / mechanical waves, and of thermal phenomena, common to our every day life and many technologies. The fundamental understanding and control over phonon responses in natural and artificial media is of major importance in the context of telecommunications, shielding, energy harvesting and control, sensing and imaging, across multiple scales. In this context, it has been recently realized that controlling different classes of symmetries at the microscopic and mesoscopic scale offers a powerful rational tool to precisely tailor phononic responses, leading to advanced acoustic and elastodynamic wave control. In this paper, we review the recent advances in the design and synthesis of artificial phononic media, namely phononic metamaterials, guided by symmetry principles. Starting from tailored broken spatial symmetries, we discuss their interplay with time symmetries for non-reciprocity and non-conservative phenomena, and finally address broader concepts that combine multiple symmetry classes to support exotic phononic wave transport., Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures

Non-reciprocal interactions in many-body systems lead to time-dependent states, commonly observed in biological, chemical, and ecological systems. The stability of these states in the thermodynamic limit, as well as the criticality of the phase transition from static to time-dependent states remains an open question. To tackle these questions, we study a minimalistic system endowed with non-reciprocal interactions: an Ising model with two spin species having opposing goals. The mean-field equation predicts three stable phases: disordered, ordered, and a time-dependent swap phase. Large scale numerical simulations support the following: (i) in 2D, the swap phase is destabilized by defects; (ii) in 3D, the swap phase is stable, and has the properties of a time-crystal; (iii) the transition from disorder to swap in 3D is characterized by the critical exponents of the 3D XY model, in agreement with the emerging continuous symmetry of time translation invariance; (iv) when the two species have fully anti-symmetric couplings, the static-order phase is unstable in any dimension due to droplet growth; (v) in the general case of asymmetric couplings, static order can be restored by a droplet-capture mechanism preventing the droplets from growing indefinitely. Disordered systems generically exhibit aging and a glass transition. Previous studies have long suggested that non-reciprocity tends to destroy glassiness. Here, we show that this is not always the case using a bipartite spherical Sherrington-Kirpatrick model that describes the antagonistic coupling between two identical complex agents modeled as macroscopic spin glasses. Physical learning is an emerging paradigm in science and engineering whereby (meta)materials acquire desired macroscopic behaviors by exposure to examples. So far, it has been applied to static properties such as elastic moduli and self-assembled structures encoded in minima of an energy landscape. Here, we extend this paradigm to dynamic functionalities, such as motion and shape change, that are instead encoded in limit cycles or pathways of a dynamical system. We identify the two ingredients needed to learn time-dependent behaviors irrespective of experimental platforms: (i) learning rules with time delays and (ii) exposure to examples that break time-reversal symmetry during training. After providing a hands-on demonstration of these requirements using programmable LEGO toys, we turn to realistic particle-based simulations where the training rules are not programmed on a computer. Instead, we elucidate how they emerge from physico-chemical processes involving the causal propagation of fields, like in recent experiments on moving oil droplets with chemotactic signalling. Our trainable particles can self-assemble into structures that move or change shape on demand, either by retrieving the dynamic behavior previously seen during training, or by learning on the fly. This rich phenomenology is captured by a modified Hopfield spin model amenable to analytical treatment. Morphogenesis is the process whereby the body of an organism develops its target shape. The morphogen BMP is known to play a conserved role across bilaterian organisms in determining the dorsoventral (DV) axis. Yet, how BMP governs the spatio-temporal dynamics of cytoskeletal proteins driving morphogenetic flow remains an open question. Here, we use machine learning to mine a morphodynamic atlas of Drosophila development, and construct a mathematical model capable of predicting the coupled dynamics of myosin, E-cadherin, and morphogenetic flow. Mutant analysis shows that BMP sets the initial condition of this dynamical system according to the following signaling cascade: BMP establishes DV pair-rule-gene patterns that set-up an E-cadherin gradient which in turn creates a myosin gradient in the opposite direction through mechanochemical feedbacks. Using neural tube organoids, we argue that BMP, and the signaling cascade it triggers, prime the conserved dynamics of neuroectoderm morphogenesis from fly to humans., Comment: Main text: 22 pages, 7 figures. Intermittency refers to the broken self-similarity of turbulent flows caused by anomalous spatio-temporal fluctuations. In this Letter, we ask how intermittency is affected by a non-dissipative viscosity, known as odd viscosity (also Hall or gyro-viscosity), which appears in parity-breaking fluids such as magnetized polyatomic gases, electron fluids under magnetic field and spinning colloids or grains. Using a combination of Navier-Stokes simulations and theory, we show that intermittency is suppressed by odd viscosity at small scales. This effect is caused by parity-breaking waves, induced by odd viscosity, that break the multiple scale invariances of the Navier-Stokes equations. Building on this insight, we construct a two-channel helical shell model that reproduces the basic phenomenology of turbulent odd-viscous fluids including the suppression of anomalous scaling. Our findings illustrate how a fully developed direct cascade that is entirely self-similar can emerge below a tunable length scale, paving the way for designing turbulent flows with adjustable levels of intermittency.

We present a data-driven pipeline for model building that combines interpretable machine learning, hydrodynamic theories, and microscopic models. The goal is to uncover the underlying processes governing nonlinear dynamics experiments. We exemplify our method with data from microfluidic experiments where crystals of streaming droplets support the propagation of nonlinear waves absent in passive crystals. By combining physics-inspired neural networks, known as neural operators, with symbolic regression tools, we generate the solution, as well as the mathematical form, of a nonlinear dynamical system that accurately models the experimental data. Finally, we interpret this continuum model from fundamental physics principles. Informed by machine learning, we coarse grain a microscopic model of interacting droplets and discover that non-reciprocal hydrodynamic interactions stabilise and promote nonlinear wave propagation., Comment: Main text: 6 pages, 4 figures. Living systems display complex behaviors driven not only by physical forces, but also decision-making guided by information processing and molded by cultural and/or biological evolution. Hydrodynamic theories hold promise for simplified, universal descriptions of these collective behaviors. However, incorporating the individual preferences of decision-making organisms into a hydrodynamic theory is an open problem. Here, we develop a data-driven pipeline that links micromotives to macrobehavior by augmenting hydrodynamics with utility functions that describe individual preferences in microeconomics. We show how to systematically validate the hypotheses underlying this construction from data using statistical tools based on neural networks. We illustrate this pipeline on the case study of human residential dynamics in the United States, for which census and sociological data is available, and show how trends in sociological surveys can be related to trends seen in racial segregation. In particular, we highlight that a history-dependence in the segregation-integration transition can arise even when agents have no memory. Beyond residential segregation, our work paves the way for systematic investigations of social-driven motility in real space from micro-organisms to humans, as well as fitness-mediated motion in more abstract genomic spaces.

The development of synthetic microswimmers has advanced our understanding of the fundamental self-propelled mechanisms of living systems. However, there are scarce studies at the microscale within highly structured anisotropic media, such as bacteria or cellular receptors that swim in concentrated solutions of filamentous proteins or lipids with viscoelastic properties. Synthetic liquid crystals (LCs) have the potential to serve as biomimetic surrogates to study the structure and dynamics of living systems. Nevertheless, studies on thermotropic LCs have mainly focused on electro and magneto-phoretic effects, with a few others on diffusiophoresis or light-driven distortions of the LC nematic director. To the best of our knowledge, here we report self-thermophoretic experiments on thermotropic LCs for the first time. Our system consists of 2D confined Janus particles in 5CB with homeotropic anchoring on the particle and LC cell surfaces. The Janus particles include a conductive titanium coating that, upon exposure to an LED source, is heated and induces a local steady nematic-isotropic phase transition, leading to the self-propulsion of the particles orthogonally to the LC director. The trajectories of the Janus particles were tracked at different intensities of the applied light. A model is developed to describe the mean-squared displacement of a Janus particle suspended in a nematic LC. The model assumes that the Janus particle feels the LC as a continuum with the anisotropic viscosity of the bulk nematic phase. Moreover, the viscoelasticity of the LC is also considered. The model describes the experimental data well, and the fitting parameter related to the magnitude of the swimming force increases with the intensity of the applied light. Model reduction is the construction of simple yet predictive descriptions of the dynamics of many-body systems in terms of a few relevant variables. A prerequisite to model reduction is the identification of these relevant variables, a task for which no general method exists. Here, we develop a systematic approach based on the information bottleneck to identify the relevant variables, defined as those most predictive of the future. We elucidate analytically the relation between these relevant variables and the eigenfunctions of the transfer operator describing the dynamics. Further, we show that in the limit of high compression, the relevant variables are directly determined by the slowest-decaying eigenfunctions. Our information-based approach indicates when to optimally stop increasing the complexity of the reduced model. Furthermore, it provides a firm foundation to construct interpretable deep learning tools that perform model reduction. We illustrate how these tools work in practice by considering uncurated videos of atmospheric flows from which our algorithms automatically extract the dominant slow collective variables, as well as experimental videos of cyanobacteria colonies in which we discover an emergent synchronization order parameter., Comment: 39 pages, 19 figures

Systems with non-reciprocal interactions generically display time-dependent states. These are routinely observed in finite systems, from neuroscience to active matter, in which globally ordered oscillations exist. However, the stability of these uniform non-reciprocal phases in noisy spatially-extended systems, their fate in the thermodynamic limit, and the criticality of the corresponding phase transitions are not fully understood. Here, we address these questions by introducing a non-reciprocal generalization of the Ising model and study its critical behavior by means of numerical and analytical approaches. While the mean-field equations predict three stable homogeneous phases (disordered, ordered and a time-dependent swap phase), our large scale numerical simulations reveal a more complex picture. Static order is destroyed in any finite dimension due to the growth of rare droplets unless the symmetry between the two spins types is broken triggering a stabilizing droplet-capture mechanism. The swap phase is destroyed by fluctuations in two dimensions through the proliferation of spiral defects, but stabilized in three dimensions where non-reciprocity changes the critical exponents from Ising to XY, thus giving rise to a robust spatially-distributed clock., Comment: See movies at https://home.uchicago.edu/~vitelli/videos.html

Atomically thin films, like transition metal dichalcogenides, can now be synthesized at wafer scale, achieving the same extreme aspect ratio (~10^8) that a sheet of paper would have if it covered an entire city. Yet, the intrinsic (i.e. unconfined) three-dimensional shape of these extreme membranes remains a mystery because of the very fundamentals of mechanical measurements: to measure such an ultra-thin film, one first needs to simultaneously free it and stabilize it without introducing confining boundaries. Here, we introduce a counter-intuitive solution to this problem: place atomically thin films on water. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy adapted to water's surface, we reveal that large-scale freestanding membranes spontaneously self-wrinkle into a universal mechanical state with long emergent length scales that follow robust scaling trends. Our analytical and numerical models suggest that these universal trends are controlled by mesoscopic parameters of the polycrystalline domains instead of atomistic details. Moreover, we demonstrate experimentally that the wrinkles result in a large and tunable reduction of elastic stiffness by up to 2 orders of magnitude. Chiral fluids - such as fluids under rotation or a magnetic field as well as synthetic and biological active fluids - flow in a different way than ordinary ones. Due to symmetries broken at the microscopic level, chiral fluids may have asymmetric stress and viscosity tensors, for example giving rise to a hydrostatic torque or non-dissipative (odd) and parity-violating viscosities. In this article, we investigate the motion of rigid bodies in such an anisotropic fluid in the incompressible Stokes regime through the mobility matrix, which encodes the response of a solid body to forces and torques. We demonstrate how the form of the mobility matrix, which is usually determined by particle geometry, can be analogously controlled by the symmetries of the fluid. By computing the mobility matrix for simple shapes in a three-dimensional anisotropic chiral fluid, we predict counter-intuitive phenomena such as motion perpendicular to applied forces and spinning under the force of gravity., Comment: 33 pages, 8 figures

In active materials, uncoordinated internal stresses lead to emergent long-range flows. An understanding of how the behavior of active materials depends on mesoscopic (hydrodynamic) parameters is developing, but there remains a gap in knowledge concerning how hydrodynamic parameters depend on the properties of microscopic elements. In this work, we combine experiments and multiscale modeling to relate the structure and dynamics of active nematics composed of biopolymer filaments and molecular motors to their microscopic properties, in particular motor processivity, speed, and valency. We show that crosslinking of filaments by both motors and passive crosslinkers not only augments the contributions to nematic elasticity from excluded volume effects but dominates them. By altering motor kinetics we show that a competition between motor speed and crosslinking results in a nonmonotonic dependence of nematic flow on motor speed. By modulating passive filament crosslinking we show that energy transfer into nematic flow is in large part dictated by crosslinking. Thus motor proteins both generate activity and contribute to nematic elasticity. Our results provide new insights for rationally engineering active materials.

Two hallmarks of non-equilibrium systems, from active colloids to animal herds, are agents motility and nonreciprocal interactions. Their interplay creates feedback loops leading to complex spatiotemporal dynamics crucial to understand and control the nonlinear response of active systems. Here, we introduce a minimal model that captures these two features at the microscopic scale, while admitting an exact hydrodynamic theory valid also in the fully-nonlinear regime. Our goal is to account for the fact that animal herds and colloidal swarms are rarely in the thermodynamic limit where particle number fluctuations can be completely ignored. Using statistical mechanics techniques we exactly coarse-grain a nonreciprocal microscopic model into a fluctuating hydrodynamics and use dynamical systems insights to analyze the resulting equations. In the absence of motility, we find two transitions to oscillatory phases occurring via distinct mechanisms: a Hopf bifurcation and a Saddle-Node on Invariant Circle (SNIC) bifurcation. In the presence of motility, this rigorous approach, complemented by numerical simulations, allows us to quantitatively assess the hitherto neglected impact of inter-species nonreciprocity on a paradigmatic transition in active matter: the emergence of collective motion. When nonreciprocity is weak, we show that flocking is accelerated and bands tend to synchronize with a spatial overlap controlled by nonlinearities. When nonreciprocity is strong, flocking is superseded by a Chase & Rest dynamical phase where each species alternates between a chasing state, when they propagate, and a resting state, when they stand still. Finally, we demonstrate how fluctuations in finite systems can be harnessed to characterize microscopic non-reciprocity from macroscopic time-correlation functions, even in phases where nonreciprocal interactions do not affect the thermodynamic steady-state.

Control of particle motion is generally achieved by applying an external field that acts directly on each particle. Here, we propose a global way to manipulate the motion of a particle by dynamically changing the properties of the fluid in which it is immersed. We exemplify this principle by considering a small particle sinking in an anisotropic fluid whose viscosity depends on the shear axis. In the Stokes regime, the motion of an immersed object is fully determined by the viscosity of the fluid through the mobility matrix, which we explicitly compute for a pushpin-shaped particle. Rather than falling upright under the force of gravity, as in an isotropic fluid, the pushpin tilts to the side, sedimenting at an angle determined by the viscosity anisotropy axis. By changing this axis, we demonstrate control over the pushpin orientation as it sinks, even in the presence of noise, using a closed feedback loop. This strategy to control particle motion, that we dub viscous tweezers, could be experimentally realized in systems ranging from polyatomic fluids under external fields to chiral active fluids of spinning particles by suitably changing their direction of global alignment or anisotropy., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures + appendices

Fully developed turbulence is a universal and scale-invariant chaotic state characterized by an energy cascade from large to small scales where the cascade is eventually arrested by dissipation. In this article, we show how to harness these seemingly structureless turbulent cascades to generate patterns. Pattern formation entails a process of wavelength selection, which can usually be traced to the linear instability of a homogeneous state. By contrast, the mechanism we propose here is fully non-linear. It is triggered by a non-dissipative arrest of turbulent cascades: energy piles up at an intermediate scale, which is neither the system size nor the smallest scales at which energy is usually dissipated. Using a combination of theory and large-scale simulations, we show that the tunable wavelength of these cascade-induced patterns can be set by a non-dissipative transport coefficient called odd viscosity, ubiquitous in chiral fluids ranging from bio-active to quantum systems. Odd viscosity, which acts as a scale-dependent Coriolis-like force, leads to a two-dimensionalization of the flow at small scales, in contrast with rotating fluids where a two-dimensionalization occurs at large scales. Excitable media, ranging from bioelectric tissues and chemical oscillators to forest fires and competing populations, are nonlinear, spatially extended systems capable of spiking. Most investigations of excitable media consider situations where the amplifying and suppressing forces necessary for spiking coexist at every point in space. In this case, spiking requires a fine-tuned ratio between local amplification and suppression strengths. But, in Nature and engineered systems, these forces can be segregated in space, forming structures like interfaces and boundaries. Here, we show how boundaries can generate and protect spiking if the reacting components can spread out: even arbitrarily weak diffusion can cause spiking at the edge between two non-excitable media. This edge spiking is a robust phenomenon that can occur even if the ratio between amplification and suppression does not allow spiking when the two sides are homogeneously mixed. We analytically derive a spiking phase diagram that depends on two parameters: (i) the ratio between the system size and the characteristic diffusive length-scale, and (ii) the ratio between the amplification and suppression strengths. Our analysis explains recent experimental observations of action potentials at the interface between two non-excitable bioelectric tissues. Beyond electrophysiology, we highlight how edge spiking emerges in predator-prey dynamics and in oscillating chemical reactions. Our findings provide a theoretical blueprint for a class of interfacial excitations in reaction-diffusion systems, with potential implications for spatially controlled chemical reactions, nonlinear waveguides and neuromorphic computation, as well as spiking instabilities, such as cardiac arrhythmias, that naturally occur in heterogeneous biological media., Comment: 31 pages. 15 figures. Cellular form and function emerge from complex mechanochemical systems within the cytoplasm. No systematic strategy currently exists to infer large-scale physical properties of a cell from its many molecular components. This is a significant obstacle to understanding biophysical processes such as cell adhesion and migration. Here, we develop a data-driven biophysical modeling approach to learn the mechanical behavior of adherent cells. We first train neural networks to predict forces generated by adherent cells from images of cytoskeletal proteins. Strikingly, experimental images of a single focal adhesion protein, such as zyxin, are sufficient to predict forces and generalize to unseen biological regimes. This protein field alone contains enough information to yield accurate predictions even if forces themselves are generated by many interacting proteins. We next develop two approaches - one explicitly constrained by physics, the other more agnostic - that help construct data-driven continuum models of cellular forces using this single focal adhesion field. Both strategies consistently reveal that cellular forces are encoded by two different length scales in adhesion protein distributions. Beyond adherent cell mechanics, our work serves as a case study for how to integrate neural networks in the construction of predictive phenomenological models in cell biology, even when little knowledge of the underlying microscopic mechanisms exist., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures

Many biological and synthetic systems out of equilibrium can be viewed as ratchets that rectify environmental noise through measurements and information processing, like in Maxwell's prototypical demon. These systems pose a challenge to standard approaches because they are better described in terms of decision-making protocols similar to computer programs rather than force laws. Here, we study a many-body generalization of the Maxwell demon problem: a fluid composed of adaptive particles that achieve collective behavior by biasing noise-driven scattering events. Using a combination of information-theoretic, kinetic, and hydrodynamic tools, we elucidate how microscopic decision-making protocols, rather than microscopic forces, generate upon coarse-graining macroscopic non-equilibrium states such as flocking. We find that the signature of such microscopic choices is an 'informational activity' that selectively compresses phase space and causes departures from equilibrium scaling with the magnitude of environmental noise. We envision applications to noise-induced patterning performed by collections of microrobots or programmable phoretic colloids that exploit, rather than fight, fluctuating fields.

Odd elasticity encompasses active elastic systems whose stress-strain relationship is not compatible with a potential energy. As the requirement of energy conservation is lifted from linear elasticity, new anti-symmetric (odd) components appear in the elastic tensor. In this work, we study the odd elasticity and non-Hermitian wave dynamics of active surfaces, specifically plates of moderate thickness. We find that a free-standing moderately thick, isotropic plate can exhibit two odd-elastic moduli, both of which are related to shear deformations of the plate. These odd moduli can endow the vibrational modes of the plate with a nonzero topological invariant known as the first Chern number. Within continuum elastic theory, we show that the Chern number is related to the presence of unidirectional shearing waves that are hosted at the plate's boundary. We show that the existence of these chiral edge waves hinges on a distinctive two-step mechanism: the finite thickness of the sample gaps the shear modes and the odd elasticity endows them with chirality., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

We study a class of bifurcations generically occurring in dynamical systems with non-mutual couplings ranging from models of coupled neurons to predator-prey systems and non-linear oscillators. In these bifurcations, extended attractors such as limit cycles, limit tori, and strange attractors merge and split in a similar way as fixed points in a pitchfork bifurcation. We show that this merging and splitting coincides with the coalescence of covariant Lyapunov vectors with vanishing Lyapunov exponents, generalizing the notion of exceptional points to non-linear dynamical systems. We distinguish two classes of bifurcations, corresponding respectively to continuous and discontinuous behaviors of the covariant Lyapunov vectors at the transition. We outline some physical consequences of generalized exceptional points on the dynamics of the system, including non-reciprocal responses, the destruction of isochrons, and enhanced sensitivity to noise. We illustrate our results with concrete examples from neuroscience, ecology, and physics. When applied to interpret existing experimental observations, our analysis suggests a simple explanation for the non-trivial phase delays observed in the population dynamics of plankton communities and the recently measured statistics of rotation reversals for a solid body immersed in a Rayleigh-B\'enard convection cell., Comment: 32 pages, 16 figures

Elasticity typically refers to a material's ability to store energy, while viscosity refers to a material's tendency to dissipate it. In this review, we discuss fluids and solids for which this is not the case. These materials display additional linear response coefficients known as odd viscosity and odd elasticity. We first introduce odd elasticity and odd viscosity from a continuum perspective, with an emphasis on their rich phenomenology, including transverse responses, modified dislocation dynamics, and topological waves. We then provide an overview of systems that display odd viscosity and odd elasticity. These systems range from quantum fluids, to astrophysical gasses, to active and driven matter. The flow of momentum and energy in a fluid is typically associated with dissipative transport coefficients: viscosity and thermal conductivity. Fluids that break certain symmetries such as mirror symmetry and time-reversal invariance can display non-dissipative transport coefficients called odd (or Hall) viscosities and thermal conductivities. The goal of this paper is to elucidate the microscopic origin of these dissipationless transport coefficients using kinetic theory. We show that odd viscosity and odd thermal conductivity arise when the linearized collision operator is not Hermitian. This symmetry breaking occurs when collisions are chiral, i.e. not mirror symmetric. To capture this feature in a minimalistic way, we introduce a modified relaxation time approximation in which the distribution function is rotated by an angle characterizing the average chirality of the collisions. Dualities are hidden symmetries that map seemingly unrelated physical systems onto each other. The goal of this work is to systematically construct families of Hamiltonians endowed with a given duality and to provide a universal description of Hamiltonians families near self-dual points. We focus on tight-binding models (also known as coupled-mode theories), which provide an effective description of systems composed of coupled harmonic oscillators across physical domains. We start by considering the general case in which group-theoretical arguments suffice to construct families of Hamiltonians with dualities by combining irreducible representations of the duality operation in parameter space and in operator space. When additional constraints due to system specific features are present, a purely group theoretic approach is no longer sufficient. To overcome this complication, we reformulate the existence of a duality as a minimization problem which is amenable to standard optimization and numerical continuation algorithms. Active matter composed of energy-generating microscopic constituents is a promising platform to create autonomous functional materials. However, the very presence of these microscopic energy sources is what makes active matter prone to dynamical instabilities and hence hard to control. Here, we show that these instabilities can be coaxed into work-generating limit cycles that turn active matter into robots. We illustrate this general principle in odd active media, model systems whose interaction forces are as simple as textbook molecular bonds yet not constrained to be the gradient of a potential. These emergent robotic functionalities are demonstrated by revisiting what is arguably the oldest of inventions: the wheel. Unlike common wheels that are driven by external torques, an odd wheel undergoes work-generating limit cycles that allow it to roll autonomously uphill by virtue of its own deformation, as demonstrated by our prototypes. Similarly, familiar scattering phenomena, like a ball bouncing off a wall, turn into basic robotic manipulations when either the ball or the wall is odd. Using continuum mechanics, we reveal collective robotic mechanisms that steer the outcome of collisions or influence the absorption of impacts in experiments. Crystallography typically studies collections of point particles whose interaction forces are the gradient of a potential. Lifting this assumption generically gives rise in the continuum limit to a form of elasticity with additional moduli known as odd elasticity. We show that such odd elastic moduli modify the strain induced by topological defects and their interactions, even reversing the stability of, otherwise, bound dislocation pairs. Beyond continuum theory, isolated dislocations can self propel via microscopic work cycles active at their cores that compete with conventional Peach-Koehler forces caused, for example, by an ambient torque density. The Stokes equation describes the motion of fluids when inertial forces are negligible compared to viscous forces. In this article, we explore the consequence of parity-violating and non-dissipative (i.e. odd) viscosities on Stokes flows in three dimensions. Parity-violating viscosities are coefficients of the viscosity tensor that are not invariant under mirror reflections of space, while odd viscosities are those which do not contribute to dissipation of mechanical energy. These viscosities can occur in systems ranging from synthetic and biological active fluids to magnetised and rotating fluids. We first systematically enumerate all possible parity-violating viscosities compatible with cylindrical symmetry, highlighting their connection to potential microscopic realizations. Then, using a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we analyze the effects of parity-violating viscosities on the Stokeslet solution, on the flow past a sphere or a bubble, and on many-particle sedimentation. In all the cases we analyze, parity-violating viscosities give rise to an azimuthal flow even when the driving force is parallel to the axis of cylindrical symmetry. For a few sedimenting particles, the azimuthal flow bends the trajectories compared to a traditional Stokes flow. For a cloud of particles, the azimuthal flow impedes the transformation of the spherical cloud into a torus and the subsequent breakup into smaller parts that would otherwise occur. Active matter encompasses different nonequilibrium systems in which individual constituents convert energy into non-conservative forces or motion at the microscale. This review provides an elementary introduction to the role of topology in active matter through experimentally relevant examples. Here, the focus lies on topological defects and topologically protected edge modes with an emphasis on the distinctive properties they acquire in active media. These paradigmatic examples represent two physically distinct classes of phenomena whose robustness can be traced to a common mathematical origin: the presence of topological invariants. These invariants are typically integer numbers that cannot be changed by continuous deformations of the relevant order parameters or physical parameters of the underlying medium. We first explain the mechanisms whereby topological defects self propel and proliferate in active nematics, leading to collective states which can be manipulated by geometry and patterning. Possible implications for active microfluidics and biological tissues are presented. We then illustrate how the propagation of waves in active fluids and solids is affected by the presence of topological invariants characterizing their dispersion relations. We discuss the relevance of these ideas for the design of robotic metamaterials and the properties of active granular and colloidal systems. Materials made from active, living, or robotic components can display emergent properties arising from local sensing and computation. Here, we realize a freestanding active metabeam with piezoelectric elements and electronic feed-forward control that gives rise to an odd micropolar elasticity absent in energy-conserving media. The non-reciprocal odd modulus enables bending and shearing cycles that convert electrical energy into mechanical work, and vice versa. The sign of this elastic modulus is linked to a non-Hermitian topological index that determines the localization of vibrational modes to sample boundaries. At finite frequency, we can also tune the phase angle of the active modulus to produce a direction-dependent bending modulus and control non-Hermitian vibrational properties. Hydrodynamic theories effectively describe many-body systems out of equilibrium in terms of a few macroscopic parameters. However, such hydrodynamic parameters are difficult to derive from microscopics. Seldom is this challenge more apparent than in active matter where the energy cascade mechanisms responsible for autonomous large-scale dynamics are poorly understood. Here, we use active nematics to demonstrate that neural networks can extract the spatio-temporal variation of hydrodynamic parameters directly from experiments. Our algorithms analyze microtubule-kinesin and actin-myosin experiments as computer vision problems. Unlike existing methods, neural networks can determine how multiple parameters such as activity and elastic constants vary with ATP and motor concentration. In addition, we can forecast the evolution of these chaotic many-body systems solely from image-sequences of their past by combining autoencoder and recurrent networks with residual architecture. Topological photonics harnesses the physics of topological insulators to control the behavior of light. Photonic modes robust against material imperfections are an example of such control. In this work, we propose a soft-matter platform based on nematic liquid crystals that supports photonic topological insulators. The orientation of liquid crystal molecules introduces an extra geometric degree of freedom which in conjunction with suitably designed structural properties, leads to the creation of topologically protected states of light. The success of spectroscopy to characterise equilibrium fluids, for example the heat capacity ratio, suggests a parallel approach for active fluids. Here, we start from a hydrodynamic description of chiral active fluids composed of spinning constituents and derive their low-frequency, long-wavelength response functions using the Kadanoff-Martin formalism. We find that the presence of odd (equivalently, Hall) viscosity leads to mixed density-vorticity response even at linear order. Such response, prohibited in time-reversal-invariant fluids, is a large-scale manifestation of the microscopic breaking of time-reversal symmetry. Out of equilibrium, the lack of reciprocity is the rule rather than the exception. Non-reciprocal interactions occur, for instance, in networks of neurons, directional growth of interfaces, and synthetic active materials. While wave propagation in non-reciprocal media has recently been under intense study, less is known about the consequences of non-reciprocity on the collective behavior of many-body systems. Here, we show that non-reciprocity leads to time-dependent phases where spontaneously broken symmetries are dynamically restored. The resulting phase transitions are controlled by spectral singularities called exceptional points. We describe the emergence of these phases using insights from bifurcation theory and non-Hermitian quantum mechanics. Our approach captures non-reciprocal generalizations of three archetypal classes of self-organization out of equilibrium: synchronization, flocking and pattern formation. Collective phenomena in these non-reciprocal systems range from active time-(quasi)crystals to exceptional-point enforced pattern-formation and hysteresis. The mechanical response of active media ranging from biological gels to living tissues is governed by a subtle interplay between viscosity and elasticity. In this Letter, we generalize the canonical Kelvin-Voigt and Maxwell models to active viscoelastic media that break both parity and time-reversal symmetries. The resulting continuum theories exhibit viscous and elastic tensors that are both antisymmetric, or odd, under exchange of pairs of indices. Statistical mechanics provides the foundation for describing complex materials using only a few thermodynamic variables. No such framework currently exists far from equilibrium. In this Letter, we demonstrate how thermodynamics emerges far from equilibrium, using fluids composed of active spinners as a case study. Activity gives rise to a single effective temperature that parameterizes both the equation of state and the emergent Boltzmann statistics. The same effective temperature, renormalized by velocity correlations, controls the linear response through canonical Green-Kubo relations for both the familiar shear viscosity and the odd (or Hall) viscosity observed in chiral fluids. The full frequency dependence of these viscosities can be derived analytically by modeling the active-spinner fluid as a random walker undergoing cyclotron motion in shear-stress space. More generally, we provide a first-principles derivation of the Green-Kubo relations valid for a broader class of fluids far from equilibrium. Solids built out of active components can exhibit non-reciprocal elastic coefficients that give rise to non-Hermitian wave phenomena. Here, we investigate non-Hermitian effects present at the boundary of two-dimensional active elastic media obeying two general assumptions: their microscopic forces conserve linear momentum and arise only from static deformations. Using continuum equations, we demonstrate the existence of the non-Hermitian skin effect in which the boundary hosts an extensive number of localized modes. Microscopic symmetries impose strong constraints on the elasticity of a crystalline solid. In addition to the usual spatial symmetries captured by the tensorial character of the elastic tensor, hidden non-spatial symmetries can occur microscopically in special classes of mechanical structures. Examples of such non-spatial symmetries occur in families of mechanical metamaterials where a duality transformation relates pairs of different configurations. We show on general grounds how the existence of non-spatial symmetries further constrains the elastic tensor, reducing the number of independent moduli. Active materials are capable of converting free energy into mechanical work to produce autonomous motion, and exhibit striking collective dynamics that biology relies on for essential functions. Controlling those dynamics and transport in synthetic systems has been particularly challenging. Here, we introduce the concept of spatially structured activity as a means to control and manipulate transport in active nematic liquid crystals consisting of actin filaments and light-sensitive myosin motors. Simulations and experiments are used to demonstrate that topological defects can be generated at will, and then constrained to move along specified trajectories, by inducing local stresses in an otherwise passive material. These results provide a foundation for design of autonomous and reconfigurable microfluidic systems where transport is controlled by modulating activity with light.

At equilibrium, the structure and response of ordered phases are typically determined by the spontaneous breaking of spatial symmetries. Out of equilibrium, spatial order itself can become a dynamically emergent concept. In this article, we show that spatially anisotropic viscous coefficients and stresses can be designed in a far-from-equilibrium fluid by applying to its constituents a time-modulated drive. If the drive induces a rotation whose rate is slowed down when the constituents point along specific directions, anisotropic structures and mechanical responses arise at long timescales. We demonstrate that the viscous response of such anisotropic driven fluids can acquire a tensorial, dissipationless component called anisotropic odd (or Hall) viscosity. Classical fluids with internal torques can display additional components of the odd viscosity neglected in previous studies of quantum Hall fluids that assumed angular momentum conservation. We show that these anisotropic and angular momentum-violating odd-viscosity coefficients can change even the bulk flow of an incompressible fluid by acting as a source of vorticity. Chiral active fluids are known to have anomalous transport properties such as the so-called odd viscosity. In this paper, we provide a microscopic mechanism for how such anomalous transport coefficients can emerge. We construct an Irving-Kirkwood-type stress tensor for chiral liquids and express the transport coefficients in terms of orientation-averaged intermolecular forces and distortions of the pair correlation function induced by a flow field. We then show how anomalous transport properties can be expected naturally due to the presence of a transverse component in the orientation-averaged intermolecular forces and anomalous distortion modes of the pair correlation function between chiral active particles. Point-like motile topological defects control the universal dynamics of diverse two-dimensional active nematics ranging from shaken granular rods to cellular monolayers. A comparable understanding in higher dimensions has yet to emerge. We report the creation of three-dimensional active nematics by dispersing extensile microtubule bundles in a passive colloidal liquid crystal. Light-sheet microscopy reveals the millimeter-scale structure of active nematics with a single bundle resolution and the temporal evolution of the associated nematic director field. The dominant excitations of three-dimensional active nematics are extended charge-neutral disclination loops that undergo complex dynamics and recombination events. Dualities are mathematical mappings that reveal unexpected links between apparently unrelated systems or quantities in virtually every branch of physics. Systems that are mapped onto themselves by a duality transformation are called self-dual and they often exhibit remarkable properties, as exemplified by an Ising magnet at the critical point. In this Letter, we unveil the role of dualities in mechanics by considering a family of so-called twisted Kagome lattices. These are reconfigurable structures that can change shape thanks to a collapse mechanism easily illustrated using LEGO. Surprisingly, pairs of distinct configurations along the mechanism exhibit the same spectrum of vibrational modes. We show that this puzzling property arises from the existence of a duality transformation between pairs of configurations on either side of a mechanical critical point. This critical point corresponds to a self-dual structure whose vibrational spectrum is two-fold degenerate over the entire Brillouin zone. The two-fold degeneracy originates from a general version of Kramers theorem that applies to classical waves in addition to quantum systems with fermionic time-reversal invariance. We show that the vibrational modes of the self-dual mechanical systems exhibit non-Abelian geometric phases that affect the semi-classical propagation of wave packets. Hooke's law states that the forces or stresses experienced by an elastic object are proportional to the applied deformations or strains. The number of coefficients of proportionality between stress and strain, i.e., the elastic moduli, is constrained by energy conservation. In this Letter, we lift this restriction and generalize linear elasticity to active media with non-conservative microscopic interactions that violate mechanical reciprocity. This generalized framework, which we dub odd elasticity, reveals that two additional moduli can exist in a two-dimensional isotropic solid with active bonds. Such an odd-elastic solid can be regarded as a distributed engine: work is locally extracted, or injected, during quasi-static cycles of deformation. Using continuum equations, coarse-grained microscopic models, and numerical simulations, we uncover phenomena ranging from activity-induced auxetic behavior to wave propagation powered by self-sustained active elastic cycles. The properties of small clusters can differ dramatically from the bulk phases of the same constituents. In equilibrium, cluster assembly has been recently explored, whereas out of equilibrium, the physical principles of clustering remain elusive. These principles underlie phenomena from molecular assembly to the formation of planets from granular matter. Here, we introduce acoustic levitation as a platform to experimentally probe the formation of nonequilibrium small structures in a controlled environment. We focus on the minimal models of cluster formation: six and seven millimetre-scale particles in two dimensions. Experiments and modelling reveal that, in contrast to thermal colloids, in non-equilibrium granular ensembles the magnitude of active fluctuations controls not only the assembly rates but also their assembly pathways and ground-state statistics. These results open up new possibilities for non-invasively manipulating macroscopic particles, tuning their interactions, and directing their assembly.
