The observation of a resonance structure in the opening angle of the electron-positron pairs in the $^{7}$Li(p,\ee) $^{8}$Be reaction was claimed and interpreted as the production and subsequent decay of a hypothetical particle (X17). Similar excesses, consistent with this particle, were later observed in processes involving $^{4}$He and $^{12}$C nuclei with the same experimental technique. The MEG II apparatus at PSI, designed to search for the $\mu^+ \rightarrow \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$ decay, can be exploited to investigate the existence of this particle and study its nature. Protons from a Cockroft-Walton accelerator, with an energy up to 1.1 MeV, were delivered on a dedicated Li-based target. The $\gamma$ and the e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ pair emerging from the $^8\mathrm{Be}^*$ transitions were studied with calorimeters and a spectrometer, featuring a broader angular acceptance than previous experiments. We present in this paper the analysis of a four-week data-taking in 2023 with a beam energy of 1080 keV, resulting in the excitation of two different resonances with Q-value \SI{17.6}{\mega\electronvolt} and \SI{18.1}{\mega\electronvolt}. No significant signal was found, and limits at \SI{90}{\percent} C.L. on the branching ratios (relative to the $\gamma$ emission) of the two resonances to X17 were set, $R_{17.6} < 1.8 \times 10^{-6} $ and $R_{18.1} < 1.2 \times 10^{-5} $., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, submitted to EPJC

In molecular systems, the ultrafast motion of electrons initiates the process of chemical change. Tracking this electronic motion across molecules requires coupling attosecond time resolution to atomic-scale spatial sensitivity. In this work, we employ a pair of attosecond x-ray pulses from an x-ray free-electron laser to follow electron motion resulting from the sudden removal of an electron from a prototypical aromatic system, para-aminophenol. X-ray absorption enables tracking this motion with atomic-site specificity. Our measurements are compared with state-of-the-art computational modeling, reproducing the observed response across multiple timescales. Sub-femtosecond dynamics are assigned to states undergoing non-radiative decay, while few-femtosecond oscillatory motion is associated with electronic wavepacket motion in stable cation states, that will eventually couple to nuclear motion. Our work provides insight on the ultrafast charge motion preceding and initiating chemical transformations in moderately complex systems, and provides a powerful benchmark for computational models of ultrafast charge motion in matter.

This paper introduces Fast Calibrated Explanations, a method designed for generating rapid, uncertainty-aware explanations for machine learning models. By incorporating perturbation techniques from ConformaSight - a global explanation framework - into the core elements of Calibrated Explanations (CE), we achieve significant speedups. These core elements include local feature importance with calibrated predictions, both of which retain uncertainty quantification. While the new method sacrifices a small degree of detail, it excels in computational efficiency, making it ideal for high-stakes, real-time applications. Fast Calibrated Explanations are applicable to probabilistic explanations in classification and thresholded regression tasks, where they provide the likelihood of a target being above or below a user-defined threshold. A myriad of factors affect large scale ads delivery systems and influence both user experience and revenue. One such factor is proactive detection and calibration of seasonal advertisements to help with increasing conversion and user satisfaction. In this paper, we present Proactive Detection and Calibration of Seasonal Advertisements (PDCaSA), a research problem that is of interest for the ads ranking and recommendation community, both in the industrial setting as well as in research. Our paper provides detailed guidelines from various angles of this problem tested in, and motivated by a large-scale industrial ads ranking system. We share our findings including the clear statement of the problem and its motivation rooted in real-world systems, evaluation metrics, and sheds lights to the existing challenges, lessons learned, and best practices of data annotation and machine learning modeling to tackle this problem. Lastly, we present a conclusive solution we took during this research exploration: to detect seasonality, we leveraged Multimodal LLMs (MLMs) which on our in-house benchmark achieved 0.97 top F1 score. Based on our findings, we envision MLMs as a teacher for knowledge distillation, a machine labeler, and a part of the ensembled and tiered seasonality detection system, which can empower ads ranking systems with enriched seasonal information.

The search for accreted satellites in the Galactic disk is a challenging task, to which Gaia plays a crucial role in synergy with ground-based spectroscopic surveys. In 2021, Re Fiorentin et al. discovered five substructures with disk kinematics including Icarus. To gain more insight into the origin of Icarus as a remnant of a dwarf galaxy rather than a signature of secular processes of disk formation, we complement astrometric Gaia DR3 data with spectroscopy from APOGEE DR17 and GALAH DR3, and explore the chemo-dynamical distributions within 3 kpc of the Sun. We select 622 stars in the accreted/unevolved regions of [Mg/Mn]-[Al/Fe] and [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H], where we identify 81 and 376 stars with $-2<{\rm[Fe/H]}<-0.7$ belonging to Icarus and Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus (GSE), respectively. The revised properties of Icarus are: $\langle V+V_{\rm LSR}\rangle\simeq171~\rm{km~s}^{-1}$, $\sigma_{V}\simeq37\rm{km~s}^{-1}$, $\langle e\rangle\simeq0.36$, $\langle{\rm[Fe/H]}\rangle\simeq-1.35$, $\langle{\rm[Mg/Fe]}\rangle\simeq+0.27$, $\langle{\rm[Al/Fe]}\rangle\simeq-0.13$, and $\langle{\rm[Mn/Fe]}\rangle\simeq-0.39$. From the CMD of its members, Icarus appears older than 12 Gyr. Such age and dynamical properties are reminiscent of the metal-weak thick disk. However, detailed chemical analysis in the diagnostic spaces [Ni/Fe]-[(C+N)/O], [Y/Eu]-[Fe/H], [Eu/Mg]-[Fe/H], [Ba/Y]-[Fe/H], and [Ba/Mg]-[Mg/H] evidences that Icarus and GSE occupy the accreted region, well separated from the bulk of in situ disk stars. Updated comparisons with N-body simulations confirm that Icarus' stars are consistent with the debris of a dwarf galaxy with a stellar mass of $\sim~10^9~M_\odot$ accreted onto a primordial disk on an initial prograde low-inclination orbit., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 3 Tables. This paper introduces KwicKwocKwac 1.0 (KwicKK), a web application designed to enhance the annotation and enrichment of digital texts in the humanities. KwicKK provides a user-friendly interface that enables scholars and researchers to perform semi-automatic markup of textual documents, facilitating the identification of relevant entities such as people, organizations, and locations. Key functionalities include the visualization of annotated texts using KeyWord in Context (KWIC), KeyWord Out Of Context (KWOC), and KeyWord After Context (KWAC) methodologies, alongside automatic disambiguation of generic references and integration with Wikidata for Linked Open Data connections. The application supports metadata input and offers multiple download formats, promoting accessibility and ease of use. Developed primarily for the National Edition of Aldo Moro's works, KwicKK aims to lower the technical barriers for users while fostering deeper engagement with digital scholarly resources. The architecture leverages contemporary web technologies, ensuring scalability and reliability. In this paper we consider a multidimensional random walk killed on leaving a right circular cone with a distribution of increments belonging to the normal domain of attraction of an $\alpha$-stable and rotationally-invariant law with $\alpha \in (0,2)\setminus \{1\}$. Based on Bogdan et al. (2018) describing the tail behaviour of the exit time of $\alpha$-stable process from a cone and using some properties of Martin kernel of the isotropic $\alpha$-stable process, in this paper we construct a positive harmonic function of the discrete time random walk under consideration. Then we find the asymptotic tail of the distribution of the exit time of this random walk from the cone. We also prove the corresponding conditional functional limit theorem.

The exceptional magnetic, optical and phononic properties of Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) make it unique for spin-wave based and photonic applications. Yet, nanostructuring crystalline YIG and manipulating its magnetism in a non-destructive way is an outstanding challenge, and so far mostly limited to two-dimensional capabilities. Here, we show that irradiation of single-crystal YIG films with a focused UV laser drives a stable, giant enhancement of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, preserving the crystalline quality. This modulation is highly confined at the nanoscale in both the lateral and vertical directions, and its extension within the volume can be finely tuned with a continuous depth-control. By harnessing these three-dimensional anisotropy profiles, we demonstrate a large tuning of the spin-wave band structure, volume spatial localization, and non-reciprocity, realizing proof-of-principle 3D magnonic crystals. This straightforward, single-step, laser nanofabrication of three-dimensional magnetic systems based on crystalline YIG thin films opens the way to design novel functions in magnonic and magneto-optic devices., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

We analyse high-resolution ESPaDOnS/CFHT spectra of 20 very metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]~$<-2.0$) in the solar neighbourhood (within $\sim2$ kpc) selected to be on planar orbits (with a maximum height of $\lesssim4$ kpc). Targets include 11 prograde and 9 retrograde stars, spanning a wide range of eccentricities ($0.20-0.95$). Their chemical abundances are consistent with those observed in the Galactic halo but show a smaller spread, with no notable difference between progrades and retrogrades. This suggests a common chemical evolution and likely a shared formation site (except for one star). In this case, chemical evolution models indicate that the formation site would have had a baryonic mass of $\sim1.4\times10^9\msun$, similar to classical dwarf galaxies. High-energy supernovae and hypernovae are needed to reproduce the [X/Fe] up to the Fe-peak, while fast-rotating massive stars and neutron star merger events explain the [X/Fe] of the neutron-capture elements. The absence of Type Ia supernova signatures suggests a star formation duration of $\lesssim1$~Gyr. Cosmological zoom-in simulations support the scenario that an in-plane infall of a single system could disperse stars over a wide range of angular momenta during the early Galactic assembly. We propose that these stars originated in a proto-Galactic building block, which we name Loki. Less likely, if progrades and retrogrades formed in two different systems, their chemical evolution must have been very similar, with a combined baryonic mass twice that of a single system. Forthcoming surveys will provide a large and homogeneous dataset to investigate whether Loki is associated with any of the known detected structures. We explore the possibility to implement random walks in the manifold of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov wave functions. The goal is to extend state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo approaches, in particular the constrained-path auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo technique, to systems where finite pairing order parameters or complex pairing mechanisms, e.g., Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing or triplet pairing, may be expected. Leveraging the flexibility to define a vacuum state tailored to the physical problem, we discuss a method to use imaginary-time evolution of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov states to compute ground state correlations, extending beyond situations spanned by current formalisms. We prove the existence of stationary solutions for some systems of reaction-diffusion type equations with superdiffusion in the corresponding H^2 spaces. Our method is based on the fixed point theorem when the elliptic problems contain first order differential operators with and without the Fredholm property, which may depend on the outcome of the competition between the natality and the mortality rates contained in the equations of our systems.

We consider some reaction-diffusion equations describing systems with the nonlocal consumption of resources and the intraspecific competition. Sharp conditions on the coefficients are obtained to ensure the stability and instability of nontrivial constant stationary solutions.

Barium (Ba) stars are chemically peculiar stars that show enhanced surface abundances of heavy elements produced by the slow-neutron-capture process, the so-called s-process. These stars are not sufficiently evolved to undergo the s-process in their interiors, so they are considered products of binary interactions. Ba stars form when a former Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) companion, which is now a white dwarf, pollutes them with s-process-rich material through mass transfer. This paper presents a detailed chemical characterization of two newly discovered Ba giants. Our main goal is to confirm their status as extrinsic s-process stars and explore potential binarity and white dwarf companions. We obtained high-resolution spectra with UVES on the Very Large Telescope to determine the chemical properties of the targets. We perform line-by-line analyses and measure 22 elements with an internal precision up to 0.04 dex. The binary nature of the targets is investigated through radial velocity variability and spectral energy distribution fitting. We found that both targets are enhanced in all the measured s-process elements, classifying our targets as Ba giants. This is the first time they are classified as such in the literature. Additionally, both stars present a mild enhancement in Eu, but less than in pure s-process elements, suggesting that the sources that polluted them were pure s-process sources. Finally, we confirmed that the two targets are RV variable and likely binary systems. The abundances in these two newly discovered polluted binaries align with classical Ba giants, providing observational constraints to better understand the s-process in AGB stars., Comment: 14 pages, 2 tables, 7 figures

Context: In the context of Galactic archaeology, the outer halo remains relatively unexplored with respect to its metallicity distribution, merger debris, and the abundance of known very/extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-2.5) stars. Aim: We utilize the Pristine survey's publicly available, Pristine data release 1 (PDR1) and Pristine-Gaia synthetic (PGS) catalogues of photometric metallicities, to select Red Giant Branch (RGB) stars in the outer halo. Methods: The RGB selection pipeline selects giants based on the absence of a well-measured parallax in the brightness range where dwarfs have reasonable parallax estimate from Gaia DR3 data. The photometric distances are calculated using a BaSTI-isochrone fitting code and the photometric metallicities. Results: Photometric distances derived from PDR1- and PGS-giants show typical uncertainties of 12% and a scatter of up to 20% and 40% respectively, when validated against inverted-parallax and Starhorse-code distances. The PDR1-giants catalogue provides a low-to-no bias view of the metallicity structure versus distance compared to the PGS-giants catalogue (with a distance-metallicity selection bias), while the PGS-giants catalogue provides an all-sky view of the outer halo, especially in the VMP end. The PDR1-giants catalogue is used to study the metallicity distribution function of the halo out to ~100 kpc, using Gaussian Mixture Model decomposition. Additionally, we use the PDR1-giants with radial velocities from spectroscopic surveys to map the metallicity view of the integrals-of-motion space where accreted dwarf galaxy debris conserve their orbital parameters for a long time. Using the PGS-giants catalogue, we associate 41 stars tentatively to the stellar counterpart of the Magellanic stream in the VMP end, out to 70 kpc. The relation between the frequency-dependent friction of a molecule in a liquid and the hydrodynamic properties of the liquid is fundamental for molecular dynamics. We investigate this connection for a water molecule moving in liquid water using all-atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and linear hydrodynamic theory. We analytically calculate the frequency-dependent friction of a sphere with finite surface slip moving in a viscoelastic compressible fluid by solving the linear transient Stokes equation, including frequency-dependent shear and volume viscosities, both determined from MD simulations of bulk liquid water. We also determine the frequency-dependent friction of a single water molecule moving in liquid water, as defined by the generalized Langevin equation from MD simulation trajectories. By fitting the effective sphere radius and the slip length, the frequency-dependent friction and velocity autocorrelation function from the transient Stokes equation and simulations quantitatively agree. This shows that the transient Stokes equation accurately describes the important features of the frequency-dependent friction of a single water molecule in liquid water and thus applies down to molecular length and time scales, provided accurate frequency-dependent viscosities are used. The frequency dependence of the shear viscosity of liquid water requires careful consideration of hydrodynamic finite-size effects to observe the asymptotic hydrodynamic power-law tail. In contrast, for a methane molecule moving in water, the frequency-dependent friction cannot be predicted based on a homogeneous model, which suggests, supported by the extraction of a frequency-dependent surface-slip profile, that a methane molecule is surrounded by a finite-thickness hydration layer with viscoelastic properties that are significantly different from bulk water., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures

Attosecond X-ray pulses are the key to studying electron dynamics at their natural timescale in specifically targeted electronic states. They promise to build the conceptual bridge between physical and chemical photo-reaction processes. Free-electron lasers (FELs) have demonstrated their capability of generating intense attosecond X-ray pulses. The use of SASE-based FELs for time-resolving experiments and investigations of nonlinear X-ray absorption mechanisms, however, necessitates their full pulse-to-pulse characterisation which remains a cutting-edge challenge. We have characterised X-ray pulses with durations of down to 600 attoseconds and peak powers up to 200 GW at ~1 keV photon energy via angular streaking at the Small Quantum Systems instrument of the European XFEL in Germany. As a direct application, we present results of nonlinear X-ray--matter interaction via time-resolved electron spectroscopy on a transient system, observing single- and double-core-hole generation in neon atoms. Using the derived temporal information about each single X-ray pulse, we reveal an otherwise hidden peak-intensity dependence of the probability for formation of double-core vacancies in neon after primary K-shell ionisation. Our results advance the field of attosecond science with highly intense and fully characterised X-ray pulses to the state-specific investigation of electronic motion in non-stationary media.

A time-efficient and comprehensive verification is a fundamental part of the design process for modern computing platforms, and it becomes ever more important and critical to optimize as the latter get ever more complex. SupeRFIVe is a methodology for the functional verification of superscalar processors that leverages an instruction set simulator to validate their correctness according to a simulation-based approach, interfacing a testbench for the design under test with the instruction set simulator by means of socket communication. Recurrent waves which are often observed during long pandemics typically form as a result of several interrelated dynamics including public health interventions, population mobility and behaviour, varying disease transmissibility due to pathogen mutations, and changes in host immunity due to recency of vaccination or previous infections. Complex nonlinear dependencies among these dynamics, including feedback between disease incidence and the opinion-driven adoption of social distancing behaviour, remain poorly understood, particularly in scenarios involving heterogeneous population, partial and waning immunity, and rapidly changing public opinions. This study addressed this challenge by proposing an opinion dynamics model that accounts for changes in social distancing behaviour (i.e., whether to adopt social distancing) by modelling both individual risk perception and peer pressure. The opinion dynamics model was integrated and validated within a large-scale agent-based COVID-19 pandemic simulation that modelled the spread of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 between December 2021 and June 2022 in Australia. Our study revealed that the fluctuating adoption of social distancing, shaped by individual risk aversion and social peer pressure from both household and workplace environments, may explain the observed pattern of recurrent waves of infections., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

We present our numerical simulation approach for the End-to-End (E2E) model applied to various astronomical spectrographs, such as SOXS (ESO-NTT), CUBES (ESO-VLT), and ANDES (ESO-ELT), covering multiple wavelength regions. The E2E model aim at simulating the expected astronomical observations starting from the radiation of the scientific sources (or calibration sources) up to the raw-frame data produced by the detectors. The comprehensive description includes E2E architecture, computational models, and tools for rendering the simulated frames. Collaboration with Data Reduction Software (DRS) teams is discussed, along with efforts to meet instrument requirements. SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) will be the new medium-resolution (R 4500 for 1 slit), high-efficiency, wide-band spectrograph for the ESO NTT at La Silla Observatory, Chile. It will be dedicated to the follow-up of any kind of transient events, ensuring fast time, high efficiency, and availability. It consists of a central structure (common path) that supports two spectrographs optimized for the UV-Visible and a Near-Infrared range. Attached to the common path is the Acquisition and Guiding Camera system (AC), equipped with a filter wheel that can provide science-grade imaging and moderate high-speed photometry. The AC Unit was integrated and aligned during the summer months of 2022 and has since been mounted in the NTTs telescope simulator. SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) is the new single object spectrograph for the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) at the La Silla Observatory, able to cover simultaneously both the UV-VIS and NIR bands (350-2000 nm). The instrument is currently in the integration and test phase, approaching the Preliminary Acceptance in Europe (PAE) before shipment to Chile for commissioning. After the assembly and preliminary test of the control electronics at INAF - Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (Napoli), the two main control cabinets of SOXS are now hosted in Padova, connected to the real hardware. This contribution describes the final electronic cabinets layout, the control strategy and the different integration phases, waiting for the Preliminary Acceptance in Europe and the installation of the instrument in Chile.

The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) will be the specialized facility to observe any transient event with a flexible scheduler at the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) at La Silla, Chile. SOXS is a single object spectrograph offering simultaneous spectral coverage in UV-VIS (350-850 nm) and NIR (800-2000 nm) wavelength regimes with an average of R~4500 for a 1arcsec slit. SOXS also has imaging capabilities in the visible wavelength regime. Currently, SOXS is being integrated at the INAF-Astronomical Observatory of Padova. Subsystem- and system-level tests and verification are ongoing to ensure and confirm that every requirement and performance are met. In this paper, we report on the integration and verification of SOXS as the team and the instrument prepare for the Preliminary Acceptance Europe (PAE).

The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) is a single object spectrograph, built by an international consortium for the 3.58-m ESO New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory [1]. It offers a simultaneous spectral coverage over 350-2000 nm, with two separate spectrographs. In this paper we present the status of the Near InfraRed (NIR) cryogenic echelle cross-dispersed spectrograph [1], in the range 0.80-2.00 {\mu}m with 15 orders, equipped with an 2k x 2k Hawaii H2RG IR array from Teledyne, working at 40K, that is currently assembled and tested on the SOXS instrument, in the premises of INAF in Padova. We present the advancements in the development of the scheduler for the Son Of X-shooter instrument at the ESO-NTT 3.58-m telescope in La Silla, Chile. SOXS is designed as a single-object spectroscopic facility and features a high-efficiency spectrograph with two arms covering the spectral range of 350-2000 nm and a mean resolving power of approximately R=4500. It will conduct UV-visible and near-infrared follow-up observations of astrophysical transients, drawing from a broad pool of targets accessible through the streaming services of wide-field telescopes, both current and future, as well as high-energy satellites. The instrument will cater to various scientific objectives within the astrophysical community, each entailing specific requirements for observation planning. SOXS will operate at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in La Silla, without the presence of astronomers on the mountain. This poses a unique challenge for the scheduling process, demanding a fully automated algorithm that is autonomously interacting with the appropriate databases and the La Silla Weather API, and is capable of presenting the operator not only with an ordered list of optimal targets (in terms of observing constraints) but also with optimal backups in the event of changing weather conditions. This imposes the necessity for a scheduler with rapid-response capabilities without compromising the optimization process, ensuring the high quality of observations and best use of the time at the telescope. We thus developed a new highly available and scalable architecture, implementing API Restful applications like Docker Containers, API Gateway, and Python-based Flask frameworks. We provide an overview of the current state of the scheduler, which is now ready for the approaching on-site testing during Commissioning phase, along with insights into its web interface and preliminary performance tests.

The SOXS spectrograph, designed for the ESO NTT telescope, operates in both the optical (UV-VIS: 350-850 nm) and NIR (800-2000 nm) bands. This article provides an overview of the final tests conducted on the UV-VIS camera system using a telescope simulator. It details the system's performance evaluation, including key metrics such as gain, readout noise, and linearity, and highlights the advancements made in the upgraded acquisition system. The testing process, conducted in the Padua laboratory, involved comprehensive simulations of the telescope environment to ensure the results closely resemble those expected at the ESO-NTT telescope. This paper presents the opto-mechanical integration and alignment, functional and optical performance verification of the NIR arm of Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) instrument. SOXS will be a single object spectroscopic facility for the ESO-NTT 3.6-m telescope, made by two arms high efficiency spectrographs, able to cover the spectral range 350 2050 nm with a mean resolving power R~4500. In particular the NIR arm is a cryogenic echelle cross-dispersed spectrograph spanning the 780-2050 nm range. We describe the integration and alignment method performed to assemble the different opto-mechanical elements and their installation on the NIR vacuum vessel, which mostly relies on mechanical characterization. The tests done to assess the image quality, linear dispersion and orders trace in laboratory conditions are summarized. The full optical performance verification, namely echellogram format, image quality and resulting spectral resolving power in the whole NIR arm (optical path and science detector) is detailed. SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) is the new ESO instrument that is going to be installed on the 3.58-m New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory. SOXS is a single object spectrograph offering a wide simultaneous spectral coverage from U- to H-band. Although such an instrument may have potentially a large variety of applications, the consortium designed it with a clear science case: it is going to provide the spectroscopic counterparts to the ongoing and upcoming imaging surveys, becoming one of the main follow-up instruments in the Southern hemisphere for the classification and characterization of transients. The NTT+SOXS system is specialized to observe all transients and variable sources discovered by imaging surveys with a flexible schedule maintained by the consortium, based on a remote scheduler which will interface with the observatory software infrastructure. SOXS is realized timely to be highly synergic with transients discovery machines like the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The instrument has been integrated and tested in Italy, collecting and assembling subsystems coming from all partners spread over six countries in three continents. The first preparatory activities in Chile have been completed at the telescope. The Instrument Control Software of SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter), the forthcoming spectrograph for the ESO New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory, has reached a mature state of development and is approaching the crucial Preliminary Acceptance in Europe phase. Now that all the subsystems have been integrated in the laboratories of the Padova Astronomical Observatory, the team operates for testing purposes with the whole instrument at both engineering and scientific level. These activities will make use of a set of software peculiarities that will be discussed in this contribution. Among Universe's most consequential events are large impacts generating rapidly-evolving extreme pressures and temperatures. Crystalline and amorphous forms of (Mg, Fe)2SiO4 are abundant and widespread, within planets and in space. The behavior of these minerals is expected to deviate form thermodynamic equilibrium in many of the processes that are critical to the formation and evolution of planets, particularly shock events. To further the understanding of the behavior of the silicate under extreme conditions, we statically compressed a crystal of forsterite up to 160.5 GPa, far beyond the compound's stability field, and probed its long-range ordering with synchrotron microdiffraction. We found that forsterite retains long-range ordering up to the highest pressure reached. Forsterite III, emerging at about 58 GPa, persists in compression to 160.5 GPa and in decompression down to about 13 GPa, for a rare combined occurrence of a metastable phase of nearly 150 GPa. These observations dispute earlier reports of pressure-induced amorphization and are a unique testimony of the resilience of the crystalline state in quasi hydrostatic compression. We confirm that highly disordered forsterite can be obtained from the decompression of forsterite III as suggested from the substantial loss of long-range ordering observed at 7 GPa after further decompression. Such kinetic pathway may explain how synthetic olivine glass have been obtained in shock experiments and could be a mechanism of generation of amorphous forsterite in cosmic dust. The 120 GPa Hugoniot discontinuity finds no correspondence in our data, marking a departure from the parallelism between static "cold compression" and dynamic compression., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We have measured the spontaneous and photo-induced decays of anionic gold clusters, Au$_N^-$, with sizes ranging from $N = 2$ to 13, and 15. After production in a sputter ion source, the size-selected clusters were stored in the cryogenic electrostatic ion-beam storage ring DESIREE and their neutralization decays were measured for storage times between 0.1 and 100 s. The dimer was observed to decay by electron emission in parallel to neutral atom emission at long times, analogously to the behavior of copper and silver dimers, implying a breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Radiative cooling is observed for all cluster sizes except for the dimer. The decay rates of clusters $N=3,6,8-13,15$ show only a single radiative cooling time. For $N=6-13$ the cooling times have a strong odd-even oscillation with an amplitude that decrease with cluster size, and with the even $N$ having the fast cooling. We compare our results with previous measurements of radiative cooling rates of the corresponding cationic gold clusters, Au$_N^+$, which also show an odd-even effect with a similar oscillation amplitude but at orders of magnitude shorter time scales, and out of phase with the anions., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

Given the wide use of forgery throughout history, scholars have and are continuously engaged in assessing the authenticity of historical documents. However, online catalogues merely offer descriptive metadata for these documents, relegating discussions about their authenticity to free-text formats, making it difficult to study these assessments at scale. This study explores the generation of structured data about documents' authenticity assessment from natural language texts. Our pipeline exploits Large Language Models (LLMs) to select, extract and classify relevant claims about the topic without the need for training, and Semantic Web technologies to structure and type-validate the LLM's results. The final output is a catalogue of documents whose authenticity has been debated, along with scholars' opinions on their authenticity. This process can serve as a valuable resource for integration into catalogues, allowing room for more intricate queries and analyses on the evolution of these debates over centuries.

Let $\{Y_{n}$, $n \geq 1\}$ be a critical branching process with immigration having finite variance for the offspring number of particles and finite mean for the immigrating number of particles. In this paper, we study lower deviation probabilities for $Y_{n}$. We aim to constrain the chemo-dynamical properties of the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf galaxy using carbon abundances. Our sample from the \textit{Pristine} Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS) includes $\sim 350$ metal-poor ([Fe/H]~$<-1.5$) stars in the main body of Sgr with good quality spectroscopic observations. Our metal-poor Sgr population has a larger velocity dispersion than metal-rich Sgr from the literature, which could be explained by outside-in star formation, extreme Galactic tidal perturbations and/or the presence of a metal-rich disc/bar $+$ a metal-poor halo. The average carbon abundance [C/Fe] in Sgr is similar to that of other classical dwarf galaxies (DGs) and consistently lower than in the Milky Way by $\sim0.2-0.3$~dex at low metallicity. The interstellar medium in DGs, including Sgr, may have retained yields from more energetic Population~III~and~II supernovae (SNe), thereby reducing the average [C/Fe]. Additionally, SNe~Ia, producing more Fe than C, would start to contribute at lower metallicity in DGs/Sgr than in the Galaxy. The presence of a [C/Fe] gradient for Sgr stars with [Fe/H]~$\gtrsim-2.0$ ($\sim 6.8\times 10^{-4}\ \rm{dex \ arcmin^{-1}}$) suggests that SNe~Ia contributed in the system at those metallicities, especially in its inner regions. There is a low frequency of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars in our Sgr sample. At higher metallicity/carbon abundance (mostly CEMP-s) this may be due to photometric selection effects, but those are less likely to affect CEMP-no stars. We propose that, given the lower average [C/Fe] in DGs, using the same CEMP definition ([C/Fe]~$>+0.7$) as in the Galaxy under-predicts the number of CEMP stars in DGs, and for Sgr a cut at [C/Fe]$~\sim +0.35$ may be more appropriate, which brings the frequency of CEMP stars in agreement with that in the Galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Through the chemodynamical characterisation of metal-poor stars, one can efficiently probe the early history of the Milky Way. We aim at decontaminating a sample of $\sim$ 3M giant stars with Gaia DR3 XP-based \textit{Pristine-Gaia} metallicities, to investigate a subset of very metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] < -1.7) with disc-like orbits. We construct a statistically robust sample of $\sim$ 36 000 very metal-poor giants, using APOGEE and LAMOST to estimate and remove contamination from high $V_\phi$ stars. We investigate the spatial and kinematic properties of the decontaminated sample, using $V_\phi$ and the action space, both powerful to disentangle stellar populations. As in previous works, we find a pronounced asymmetry in $L_z$ and $V_\phi$ in favour of prograde stars. This excess is mostly made of prograde-planar stars (10% of the very metal-poor population), and contains stars with $V_\phi$ > 180 km s$^{-1}$ and $Z_{\text{max}}$ < 1.5 kpc, down to [Fe/H] = -2.9 at a 2$\sigma$ confidence level. While the overall orbital distributions of our sample match that of a halo, the highly prograde and planar subset (2% of the very metal-poor population) also bears characteristics classically associated with a thick disc, i.e., a spatial distribution compatible with a short-scaled thick disc, and a thick disc-like $Z_{\text{max}}$ - $R_{\text{max}}$ distribution. Additionally, assuming a stationary or prograde halo with $\overline{V_\phi}$ $\sim$ 30-40 km.s$^{-1}$ is not sufficient to suppress the kinematic signature of the highly prograde and planar subset. These results rule out any link with a thin disc, and instead, support a contribution from a \textit{metal-weak thick disc}., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A on June 24, 2024. We measure the radius-velocity phase-space edge profile for Abell S1063 using galaxy redshifts from arXiv:1409.3507 and arXiv:2109.03305. Combined with a cosmological model and after accounting for interlopers and sampling effects, we infer the escape velocity profile. Using the Poisson equation, we then directly constrain the gravitational potential profile and find excellent agreement between three different density models. For the NFW profile, we find log$_{10}$(M$_{200},{\rm crit}$)= $15.40^{+0.06}_{-0.12}$M$_{\odot}$, consistent to within $1\sigma$ of six recently published lensing masses. We argue that this consistency is due to the fact that the escape technique shares no common systematics with lensing other than radial binning. These masses are 2-4$\sigma$ lower than estimates using X-ray data, in addition to earlier velocity dispersion estimates. We measure the 1D velocity dispersion within r$_{200}$ to be $\sigma_{v} = 1477^{+87}_{-99}$ km/s, which combined with our escape velocity mass, brings the dispersion for AS1063 in-line with hydrodynamic cosmological simulations for the first time.

The Pristine-\textit{Gaia} synthetic catalogue provides reliable photometric metallicities for $\sim$30 million FGK stars using the Pristine survey model and Gaia XP spectra. We perform the first low-to-medium-resolution spectroscopic follow-up of bright (G<15) and distant (up to 35 kpc) very and extremely metal-poor (V/EMP, [Fe/H]<-2.5) red giant branch stars from this. We use Isaac Newton Telescope/Intermediate Dispersion Spectrograph (INT/IDS) observations centred around the calcium triplet region ideal for V/EMP stars. We find that 76\% of our stars indeed have [Fe/H]<-2.5 with these inferred spectroscopic metallicities and only 3\% are outliers with [Fe/H] > -2.0. We report a success rate of 77\% and 38\% in finding stars with [Fe/H]<-2.5 and -3.0 respectively. This will allow for 10,000-20,000 homogeneously analysed EMP stars using the WEAVE survey follow-up of Pristine EMP candidates. We associate 20\%, 46\%, and 34\% of the stars to be confined to the disc plane, or to have inner and outer halo orbits, respectively. We also associate these V/EMP stars to known accretion events such as Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage (GES), LMS-1/Wukong, Thamnos, Helmi streams, Sagittarius, Sequoia, etc. For the stars that orbit close to the disc plane, we find that the prograde region with low vertical action is overdense with a significance of 4$\sigma$ as compared to its retrograde counterpart. We also find three new (brightest) members of the most metal-poor stellar stream, C-19, one of which is 50$^\circ$ away from the main body of the stream. Our measured mean metallicity, velocity dispersion, and stream width are consistent with the literature, but our results favour a higher distance ($\sim$21.5 kpc) for the stream. The most metal-poor stars provide valuable insights into the early chemical enrichment history of a system, carrying the chemical imprints of the first generations of supernovae. The most metal-poor region of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy remains inadequately observed and characterised. To date, only $\sim4$ stars with [Fe/H]~$<-2.0$ have been chemically analysed with high-resolution spectroscopy. In this study, we present the most extensive chemical abundance analysis of 12 low-metallicity stars with metallicities down to [Fe/H]~$=-3.26$ and located in the main body of Sagittarius. These targets, selected from the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey, were observed using the MIKE high-resolution spectrograph at the {\it Magellan-Clay} telescope, which allowed us to measure up to 17 chemical species. The chemical composition of these stars reflects the imprint of a variety of type~II supernovae (SNe~II). A combination of low- to intermediate-mass high-energy SNe and hypernovae ($\sim10-70\msun$) is required to account for the abundance patterns of the lighter elements up to the Fe-peak. The trend of the heavy elements suggests the involvement of compact binary merger events and fast-rotating (up to $\sim300\kms$) intermediate-mass to massive metal-poor stars ($\sim25-120\msun$) that are the sources of rapid and slow processes, respectively. Additionally, asymptotic giant branch stars contribute to a wide dispersion of [Ba/Mg] and [Ba/Eu]. The absence of an $\alpha-$knee in our data indicates that type Ia supernovae did not contribute in the very metal-poor region ([Fe/H]~$\leq-2.0$). However, they might have started to pollute the interstellar medium at [Fe/H]~$>-2.0$, given the relatively low [Co/Fe] in this metallicity region., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Active particles with a (magnetic) dipole moment are of interest for steering self-propelled motion, but also result in novel collective effects due to their dipole-dipole interaction. Here systems of active dipolar particles are studied with Brownian dynamics simulations to systematically characterize the different patterns they form, specifically in the presence of an external (magnetic) field. The combination of three types of order - clustering, orientational alignment and chain formation - is used to classify the patterns observed in these systems. In the presence of an external field, oriented chains and bands are found to be dominant. These structures show some similarities with columnar cluster seen in (passive) ferrofluids and display columnar spacing and number of lanes per cluster that both decrease with increasing field strength.

Motivated by ethical and legal concerns, the scientific community is actively developing methods to limit the misuse of Text-to-Image diffusion models for reproducing copyrighted, violent, explicit, or personal information in the generated images. Simultaneously, researchers put these newly developed safety measures to the test by assuming the role of an adversary to find vulnerabilities and backdoors in them. We use compositional property of diffusion models, which allows to leverage multiple prompts in a single image generation. This property allows us to combine other concepts, that should not have been affected by the inhibition, to reconstruct the vector, responsible for target concept generation, even though the direct computation of this vector is no longer accessible. We provide theoretical and empirical evidence why the proposed attacks are possible and discuss the implications of these findings for safe model deployment. We argue that it is essential to consider all possible approaches to image generation with diffusion models that can be employed by an adversary. Our work opens up the discussion about the implications of concept arithmetics and compositional inference for safety mechanisms in diffusion models. We investigate the potential of combining the computational power of noisy quantum computers and of classical scalable convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The goal is to accurately predict exact expectation values of parameterized quantum circuits representing the Trotter-decomposed dynamics of quantum Ising models. By incorporating (simulated) noisy expectation values alongside circuit structure information, our CNNs effectively capture the underlying relationships between circuit architecture and output behaviour, enabling predictions for circuits with more qubits than those included in the training set. Notably, thanks to the quantum information, our CNNs succeed even when supervised learning based only on classical descriptors fails. Furthermore, they outperform a popular error mitigation scheme, namely, zero-noise extrapolation, demonstrating that the synergy between quantum and classical computational tools leads to higher accuracy compared with quantum-only or classical-only approaches. By tuning the noise strength, we explore the crossover from a computationally powerful classical CNN assisted by quantum noisy data, towards rather precise quantum computations, further error-mitigated via classical deep learning., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

The pressure-induced polymorphism of binary octect compounds has long been considered a settled problem although the possible atomic disordering of some phases remains a puzzling observation. Taking GaP as a case study, we conclude, through x-ray microdiffraction and first-principles calculations, that its high-pressure phase II (previously reported as being disordered) adopts in fact an ordered base-centered monoclinic structure previously unknown in this class of compounds. The formation of layered patterns with variable degrees of interlayer dimerization, as observed in GaP, marks a paradigm shift of our understanding of ordering in octect high-pressure phases which calls for a more extensive re-examination. A rich polymorphism with fine tuning of chemical and physical properties can be envisioned.

In the article we establish the global well-posedness in W^{1, 2, 2}(R\times R^{+}) of the integro-differential equation in the case of the anomalous diffusion when the one dimensional negative Laplace operator is raised to a fractional power in the presence of the transport term. The model is relevant to the cell population dynamics in the Mathematical Biology. Our proof relies on a fixed point technique.

We introduce multinomial and $r$-variants of several classic objects of combinatorial probability, such as the random recursive and Hoppe trees, random set partitions and compositions, the Chinese restaurant process, Feller's coupling, and some others. Just as various classic combinatorial numbers - like Stirling, Eulerian and Lah numbers - emerge as essential ingredients defining the distributions of the mentioned processes, the so-called $r$-versions of these numbers appear in exact distributional formulas for the multinomial and $r$-counterparts. This approach allows us to offer a concise probabilistic interpretation for various identities involving $r$-versions of these combinatorial numbers, which were either unavailable or meaningful only for specific values of the parameter $r$. We analyze the derived distributions for fixed-size structures and establish distributional limit theorems as the size tends to infinity. Utilizing the aforementioned generalized Stirling numbers of both kinds, we define and analyze $(r,s)$-Lah distributions, which have arisen in the existing literature on combinatorial probability in various contexts., Comment: 53 pages

We leverage random phase approximation and unbiased auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo methods to compute dynamical correlations for a dilute homogeneous two-dimensional attractive Fermi gas. Our main purpose is to quantitatively study the collective excitations of the system to generate robust benchmark results and to shed light into fermionic superfluidity in the strongly correlated regime. In particular we are motivated by a recent paper suggesting that the Higgs mode can be detected in the spectrum of spin fluctuations. Despite the fact that we are somewhat limited by finite-size effects, our study pinpoints indeed a clear peak in the spin channel at low momentum, but a detailed analysis suggests that such a peak, though certainly interesting, does not correspond to the Higgs mode. We propose a different explanation for the shape of the spin structure factor. On the other hand, our results clearly show that the Higgs mode can be detected in the density channel at very small wave vectors, although very good resolution is necessary., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The article is devoted to the existence of solutions of a certain system of quadratic integral equations in H^1(R, R^N). We show the existence of a perturbed solution by using a fixed point technique in the Sobolev space on the real line.

We provide a scheme by utilizing a two-cavity setup to generate useful quantum mechanically entangled states of two cavity fields, which themselves are prepared in Schrodinger cat states. The underlying atom-field interaction is considered off-resonant and three atoms are successively sent through the cavities, initially fed with coherent fields. Analytical solution of the protocol, followed by conditional measurements on the atoms, produce a family of eight such entangled states. Entanglement properties of the obtained states are characterized by the Von Neumann entropy. We reveal the parameter domain for tuning the entanglement, the prime tuning parameters being the atom-field interaction time and the field amplitudes. The parameter domains for both quasi-Bell and non quasi-Bell states are discussed. We also present a Wigner phase space representation of the reduced state of the cavity, showing negative values and interference patterns similar to those of a compass state, used in quantum precision measurements, and despite its large entropy.
