We consider possible perturbations of the black hole event horizon induced by matter with spin, extending the derivation of the Hawking-Hartle formula (tidal heating) in the presence of torsion. When specialised to theories with a non-vanishing (pseudo-)traceless component of the (con)torsion tensor, we remarkably find that the tidal heating phenomenon gets modified by additional torsion-dependent terms, in agreement with previous investigations based on Jacobson's spacetime thermodynamics approach. These results lead to relevant phenomenological and theoretical consequences: modifications in the Hawking-Hartle term change the Bondi mass associated with the gravitational radiation observed at infinity, and modify the Hawking radiation spectrum of evaporating black holes.

We consider a system of interacting non-relativistic bosons confined to a one-dimensional ring in the presence of a synthetic gauge field induced by a rotating barrier. Interactions are introduced as a constraint in field space, and the barrier is modeled by general boundary conditions. The quantum vacuum (Casimir) energy arising from noninteracting massless quanta is known to induce a long-range force, while decays exponentially for massive fields and separations larger than the inverse mass of the quanta involved. Here, we show that the interplay between dimensionality and nonlinearities in the field theory alters this behaviour in a nontrivial way. We argue that the changes are intimately related to the Mermin-Wagner-Hohenberg-Coleman theorem, and illustrate this situation using a nonlinear sigma model as a working example. We compute the quantum vacuum energy, which consists of the usual Casimir contribution plus a semiclassical contribution, and find that the vacuum-induced force is long-ranged at large distance, while displays a complex behaviour at small separations. Finally, even for this relatively simple set-up, we show that nonlinearities are generally responsible for modulations in the force as a function of the coupling constant and the temperature.

Recent work has analysed how deformations due to the insertion of a defect in a flat hexagonal lattice affect the ground state structure of an interacting fermion field theory. Such modifications result in an increase of the order parameter in the vicinity of the defect and can be explained by a kirigami effect, that is the combined effect of the curvature, locally introduced by the deformation in the lattice tessellation, and of a synthetic gauge field induced by the boundary conditions along the cut, performed to introduce the defect. The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics---dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem---all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. In this work we consider an interacting quantum field theory on a curved two-dimensional manifold that we construct by geometrically deforming a flat hexagonal lattice by the insertion of a defect. Depending on how the deformation is done, the resulting geometry acquires a locally non-vanishing curvature that can be either positive or negative. Fields propagating on this background are forced to satisfy boundary conditions modulated by the geometry and that can be assimilated by a non-dynamical gauge field. We present an explicit example where curvature and boundary conditions compete in altering the way symmetry breaking takes place, resulting in a surprising behaviour of the order parameter in the vicinity of the defect. Given a spacetime with nonvanishing torsion, we discuss the equation for the evolution of the separation vector between infinitesimally close curves in a congruence. We show that the presence of a torsion field leads, in general, to tangent and orthogonal effects on the congruence; in particular, the presence of a completely generic torsion field contributes to a relative acceleration between test particles. We derive, for the first time in the literature, the Raychaudhuri equation for a congruence of timelike and null curves in a spacetime with the most generic torsion field., Comment: 8 pages

We present for the first time an explicit exposition of quantum corrections within the cubic Galileon theory including the effect of quantum gravity, in a background- and gauge-invariant manner, employing the field-reparametrisation approach of the covariant effective action at 1-loop. We show that the consideration of gravitational effects in combination with the non-linear derivative structure of the theory reveals new interactions at the perturbative level, which manifest themselves as higher-operators in the associated effective action, which' relevance is controlled by appropriate ratios of the cosmological vacuum and the Galileon mass scale. We derive the 1-loop effective action of the cubic Galileon coupled to quantum-gravitational fluctuations in a background and gauge-independent manner, employing the covariant framework of DeWitt and Vilkovisky. Although the bare action respects shift symmetry, the coupling to gravity induces an effective mass to the scalar, of the order of the cosmological constant, as a direct result of the non-flat field-space metric, the latter ensuring the field-reparametrization invariance of the formalism. Within a gauge-invariant regularization scheme, we discover novel, gravitationally induced non-Galileon higher-derivative interactions in the effective action. These terms, previously unnoticed within standard, non-covariant frameworks, are not Planck suppressed. We discuss the combined effect of magnetic fields and geometry in interacting fermionic systems. At leading order in the heat-kernel expansion, the infrared singularity (that in flat space leads to the magnetic catalysis) is regulated by the chiral gap effect, and the catalysis is deactivated by the effect of the scalar curvature. We discover that an infrared singularity is found in higher-order terms that mix the magnetic field with curvature, and these lead to a novel form of geometrically induced magnetic catalysis. The dynamical mass squared is then modified not only due to the chiral gap effect by an amount proportional to the curvature, but also by a magnetic shift $\propto (4-D)eB$, where $D$ represents the number of space-time dimensions. We derive a formula describing the transformation of the Hawking-Hayward quasi-local energy under a conformal rescaling of the spacetime metric. A known formula for the transformation of the Misner-Sharp-Hernandez mass is recovered as a special case.

When black holes are dynamical, event horizons are replaced by apparent and trapping horizons. Conformal and Kerr-Schild transformations are widely used in relation with dynamical black holes and we study the behaviour under such transformations of quantities related to the thermodynamics of these horizons, such as the Misner-Sharp-Hernandez mass (internal energy), the Kodama vector, surface gravity, and temperature. The intriguing choice to treat alternative theories of gravity by means of the Palatini approach, namely elevating the affine connection to the role of independent variable, contains the seed of some interesting (usually under-explored) generalizations of General Relativity, the metric-affine theories of gravity. The peculiar aspect of these theories is to provide a natural way for matter fields to be coupled to the independent connection through the covariant derivative built from the connection itself. Adopting a procedure borrowed from the effective field theory prescriptions, we study the dynamics of metric-affine theories of increasing order, that in the complete version include invariants built from curvature, nonmetricity and torsion. We show that even including terms obtained from nonmetricity and torsion to the second order density Lagrangian, the connection lacks dynamics and acts as an auxiliary field that can be algebraically eliminated, resulting in some extra interactions between metric and matter fields., Comment: 15 pages. v2: some misconceptions clarified, references added. We analyze the apparent horizon dynamics in the inhomogeneous Clifton-Mota-Barrow solution of Brans-Dicke theory. The presence and evolution of apparent horizons in a two-parameter family of spherically symmetric, time-dependent solutions of Brans-Dicke gravity are analyzed. These solutions were introduced to model space- and time-varying gravitational couplings and are supposed to represent central objects embedded in a spatially flat universe. We find that the solutions possess multiple evolving apparent horizons, both black hole horizons covering a central singularity and cosmological ones. It is not uncommon for two of these horizons to merge, leaving behind a naked singularity covered only by a cosmological horizon. Two characteristic limits are also explicitly worked out: the limit where the theory reduces to general relativity and the limit where the solutions become static. We perform a cosmographic analysis using several cosmological observables such as the luminosity distance moduli, the volume distance, the angular diameter distance and the Hubble parameter. These quantities are determined using different data sets: Supernovae type Ia and Gamma Ray Bursts, the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations, the cosmic microwave background power spectrum and the Hubble parameter as measured from surveys of galaxies. This data set allows to put constraints on the cosmographic expansion with unprecedented precision. We also present forecasts for the coefficients of the kinematic expansion using future but realistic data sets: constraints on the coefficients of the expansions are likely to improve by a factor ten with the upcoming large scale structure probes. Finally, we derive the set of the cosmographic parameters for several cosmological models (including $\Lambda$CDM) and compare them with our best fit set. While distance measurements are unable to discriminate among these models, we show that the inclusion of the Hubble data set leads to strong constraints on the lowest order coefficients and in particular it is incompatible with $\Lambda$CDM at 3-$\sigma$ confidence level. Metric-affine theories of gravity provide an interesting alternative to General Relativity: in such an approach, the metric and the affine (not necessarily symmetric) connection are independent quantities. Furthermore, the action should include covariant derivatives of the matter fields, with the covariant derivative naturally defined using the independent connection. As a result, in metric-affine theories a direct coupling involving matter and connection is also present. The role and the dynamics of the connection in such theories is explored. We employ power counting in order to construct the action and search for the minimal requirements it should satisfy for the connection to be dynamical. We find that for the most general action containing lower order invariants of the curvature and the torsion the independent connection does not carry any dynamics. It actually reduces to the role of an auxiliary field and can be completely eliminated algebraically in favour of the metric and the matter field, introducing extra interactions with respect to general relativity. However, we also show that including higher order terms in the action radically changes this picture and excites new degrees of freedom in the connection, making it (or parts of it) dynamical. Constructing actions that constitute exceptions to this rule requires significant fine tuned and/or extra a priori constraints on the connection. It is known that in f(R) theories of gravity with an independent connection which can be both non-metric and non symmetric, this connection can always be algebraically eliminated in favour of the metric and the matter fields, so long as it is not coupled to the matter explicitly. We show here that this is a special characteristic of f(R) actions, and it is not true for actions that include other curvature invariants. This contradicts some recent claims in the literature. We constrain the parameters describing the kinematical state of the universe using a cosmographic approach, which is fundamental in that it requires a very minimal set of assumptions (namely to specify a metric) and does not rely on the dynamical equations for gravity. On the data side, we consider the most recent compilations of Supernovae and Gamma Ray Bursts catalogues. This allows to further extend the cosmographic fit up to $z = 6.6$, i.e. up to redshift for which one could start to resolve the low z degeneracy among competing cosmological models. In order to reliably control the cosmographic approach at high redshifts, we adopt the expansion in the improved parameter $y = z/(1+z)$. This series has the great advantage to hold also for $z > 1$ and hence it is the appropriate tool for handling data including non-nearby distance indicators. We find that Gamma Ray Bursts, probing higher redshifts than Supernovae, have constraining power and do require (and statistically allow) a cosmographic expansion at higher order than Supernovae alone. Exploiting the set of data from Union and GRBs catalogues, we show (for the first time in a purely cosmographic approach parametrized by deceleration $q_0$, jerk $j_0$, snap $s_0$) a definitively negative deceleration parameter $q_0$ up to the 3$\sigma$ confidence level. The backreaction of inhomogeneities on the cosmic dynamics is studied in the context of scalar-tensor gravity. Due to terms of indefinite sign in the non-canonical effective energy tensor of the Brans-Dicke-like scalar field, extra contributions to the cosmic acceleration can arise. Brans-Dicke and metric f(R) gravity are presented as specific examples.
