Abstract

Electric power systems have served well the consumers need for continuous, uninterrupted power supply of good quality and at the minimum possible cost. However, nowadays, the worldwide increasing demand on electric power, coupled with governmental policy changes towards “green” energy and emissions reduction have led to significant changes in the electric power generation. These changes have introduced many serious issues and problems to the electric power systems and although they have been efficiently addressed in the past years, now they need to be restudied and reanalysed taking into consideration all new developments. Distributed generation (DG), constitutes one of the most important developments in modern electric power systems and introduced many benefits as well as drawbacks. DG units are connected to the electric power system near load centres, thus, directly to the distribution network. DG units are larger in number than the more massive conventional power stations and are linked to the introduction of bidirectional power flow. As a result, the configuration of the traditional electric power systems and the networks’ operation have been prominently altered over the last years as soon as DG was introduced into the electric network. This progress has offered many challenges that need to be addressed such as those in terms of control and protection of electric power systems and particularly of distribution networks. The current PhD Thesis attempts to offer a contribution to the electricity distribution networks’ studies with particular reference to distributed generation and protection. In particular, the problems and the issues arising from the installation of DG units in distribution networks are studied. Research on the methods for improving voltage profiles and for reducing real and reactive power losses in distribution networks caused by DGs installation is conducted. Moreover, a decision making algorithm is developed and proposed for selecting the optimum size and location of DG in distribution networks. Furthermore, a new technique based on syntactic pattern recognition for the identification of power system signals used by protective relays is developed in an effort to contribute in the deterrence and reduction of faults. Finally, extensive studies in a distribution network have been conducted, with and without DGs, which aimed to identify the influence of several important parameters in the network’s lightning performance and with its main goal the limitation of lightning faults.

Abstract

Significant advancements in the field of power electronics have created an ideal opportunity to introduce various topologies of multilevel inverters. These multilevel inverter topologies comprise different notable characteristics, such as staircase sinusoidal output voltage with high quality, a lowered number of power switches, no filter requirement, etc. In this literature, a new asymmetrical MLI topology is proposed to reduce the number of components of the inverter with admirable voltage-step creation. The proposed topology provides a 17-level, staircase-type, nearly sinusoidal output voltage waveform. The number of switches required for the proposed multilevel inverter topology is fewer compared to the existing topology for the same level. A carrier-based sinusoidal pulse-width modulation technique is used for the proposed topology at a switching frequency of 3 kHz. The functioning of the proposed inverter topology is thoroughly examined. A 17-level asymmetrical inverter is executed; both the MATLAB/SIMULINK as well as the experimental results using dSPACE-1103 controller. The simulation results are verified using the experimental results for the proposed 17-level multilevel inverter for modulation indexes of 1 and 0.6. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This research paper introduces a new topology for multilevel inverters, emphasizing the reduction of harmonic distortion and the optimization of the component count. The complexity of an inverter is determined by the number of power switches, which is significantly reduced in the presented topology, as fewer switches require fewer driver circuits. In this proposed topology, a new single-phase generalized multilevel inverter is analyzed with an equal magnitude of voltage supply. A 9-level, 11-level, or 13-level symmetrical inverter with RL load is analyzed in MATLAB/Simulink 2019b and then experimentally validated using the dSPACE-1103 controller. The experimental verification of the load voltage and current with different modulation indices is also presented. The analysis of the proposed topology concludes that the total required number of components is lower than that necessary for the classical inverter topologies, as well as for some new proposed multilevel inverters that are also compared with the proposed topology in terms of gate driver circuits, power switches, and DC sources, which thereby enhances the goodness of the proposed topology. Abstract

Transmission system reinforcement is an issue of great importance, in an effort to handle the increasing renewable power generation. Nevertheless, the upgrade of the transmission system (lines, substations, etc.) is not always attainable, due to techno-economical restrictions. To this context, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grids or converting already existing AC lines to DC lines could offer an alternative solution, considering also the interconnection of offshore intermittent renewable generation resources, the connection of remote generation sources to load centers and the inter-continental transfer of large quantities of energy surpassingly an overlay grid. The current work presents a research plan for multi- terminal HVDC grids, in an effort to face technical challenges.

Abstract

Many citizens of European countries may soon experience a long and extensive blackout. The lack of predictability in the output of renewable energy sources, aggravating the problem of consistently matching supply with demand on electric grids, along with cyber-attacks or even worse unpredictable incidents in the electric grid are some factors that may mean a blackout is much more likely than in previous years. This paper covers the possibility of an extensive blackout in a country of the interconnected European electricity transmission system or, even worse, a blackout in a wide area of the European continent. The topic of this paper becomes even more important and timely given the energy crisis due to the war in Ukraine, which has made the possibility of a blackout in the winter of 2022–2023 high. First, the major European blackouts that occurred in the past 20 years are presented, examining their causes. On 8 January 2021, the European electricity grid was divided into two separate sections, with different frequencies; some additional scenarios are considered which, if they had happened, could have led to blackouts in some European countries or, even worse, a wide area of Europe. This work also examines how to avoid such an eventuality, as well as how European TSOs should react in case a blackout occurs. Focused on the fast and reliable supply of consumers after a blackout, a novel restoration strategy based on the A* Algorithm is presented. Abstract

Our paper presents a biomonitoring platform comprised of a software backend and an affordable wearable monitoring device. The biomonitoring field demands for large scale solutions involving plug and play devices in order to conduct ample studies.Our software platform is aimed at a scalable web backend with dedicated microservices for storing and processing real time data streams coming from a multitude of sensors. The hardware module was developed using an ergonomic design fit for outdoor environments and a fast connection using Bluetooth 4.0. We integrated sensors for electrocardiogram, oxygen saturation and heart rate.Our proposed platform allows for real time data monitoring of multiple subjects in an active environment.
