INTRODUCTION: Mobile video gaming among university students has increased rapidly, more than before the COVID-19 pandemic. This is very concerning as this could spark various problems, such as musculoskeletal pain and gaming disorders. OBJECTIVES: The present study is to identify the predictors of mobile video gaming on musculoskeletal pain among university students in Selangor, Malaysia. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: This study was conducted online using a self-reported online questionnaire via Google Form and sent to university students in Selangor, Malaysia. Participants' gaming addiction was measured using the Ten Item Internet Gaming Disorder Test (IGDT-10) questionnaire, and the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain was assessed by the Modified Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (MNMQ). The data was analyzed using SPSS version 25. A descriptive and binomial linear regression test was used to predict the variables. The statistical significance was set at p < 0.05, and odds ratios were calculated with confidence intervals of 95%. RESULTS: The prevalence of Internet Gaming Disorder among university students in Selangor, Malaysia is 1.8% (n=3). The neck region (74.2%) was the most commonly reported body region with musculoskeletal pain, followed by the shoulder region (60.7 %), lower back region (55.8 %), and upper back region (50.9 %). The body position was the only predictor of mobile video gaming with musculoskeletal pain (p = 0.002) in the lower back region. CONCLUSION: According to the findings of this study, the prevalence of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) among university students was low and not addicted to gaming in the Covid-19 lockdown. We also found that participants who sat while playing mobile video games were more likely to develop low back pain. However, one of the limiting factors could be prolonged sitting in virtual classes during the lockdown, which causes low back pain.

Badminton is the fastest racket sport in the world with smash speeds reaching over 111 m/s (400 kph). This study examined the forehand jump smash in badminton using synchronised force plates and full-body motion capture to quantify relationships to shuttlecock speed through correlations. Nineteen elite male Malaysian badminton players were recorded performing forehand jump smashes with the fastest, most accurate jump smash from each player analysed. The fastest smash by each participant was on average 97 m/s with a peak of 105 m/s. A correlational analysis revealed that a faster smash speed was characterised by a more internally rotated shoulder, a less elevated shoulder, and less extended elbow at contact. The positioning of the arm at contact appears to be critical in developing greater shuttlecock smash speeds. Vertical ground reaction force and rate of force development were not correlated with shuttlecock speed, and further investigation is required as to their importance for performance of the jump smash e.g., greater jump height and shuttle angle. It is recommended that players/coaches focus on not over-extending the elbow or excessively elevating the upper arm at contact when trying to maximise smash speed.

Inversion ankle sprains (IAS) are the most common injuries in sports and recreational activities. Incomplete rehabilitation among injured athletes may result in repetitive inward ankle rolls. Furthermore, inversion ankle sprain causes damage to the superficial peroneal nerve during repeated ankle inversion and plantar flexion. This results in positive neurodynamic tests in patients with sprained ankles. The purpose of this study was to find the effect of the neuro-dynamic technique on repetitive inward ankle rolls and compare it with standard physiotherapy on dynamic balance, pain score, peroneal longus, and tibialis anterior muscle activation response, knee range of motion (ROM), and functional ankle disability index (FADI) among young Malaysian athletes. Fourteen participants of age ranging from 17 to 35 years with repeated ankle sprains were recruited and randomized into Intervention Group A (Neurodynamic technique and Standard Physiotherapy-NDT+SP) and Intervention Group B (Standard Physiotherapy-SP). The participants of group A received NDT (4*30 s with 1-min rest) consisting of peroneal nerve mobilization began the day after the baseline and continued through the week for 3 sessions. In addition, the participants received standard physiotherapy (pain management and exercise) whereas the group B participants received only standard physiotherapy. The participants with repeated IAS were checked for FADI followed by pain score, dynamic balance (Y-balance), and knee ROM (using electro-goniometer). The peroneal longus and tibialis anterior muscle activity response was tested by Surface Electromyography (sEMG) (Noraxon Myo-Muscle) on the injured leg. The subjects of the two groups were tested on selected variables in baseline, mid, post and follow-up measurements. Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was computed to determine the interaction effects of time and between-subject factors. Three-dimensional position data of nineteen elite male Malaysian badminton players performing a series of maximal jump smashes were collected using a motion capture system. A ‘resultant moments’ inverse dynamics analysis was performed on the racket arm joints (shoulder, elbow and wrist). Relationships between racket head speed and peak joint moments were quantified using correlational analyses, inclusive of a Benjamini–Hochberg correction for multiple-hypothesis testing. The racket head centre speed at racket–shuttlecock contact was, on average, 61.2 m/s with a peak of 68.5 m/s which equated to average shuttlecock speeds of 95.2 m/s with a peak of 105.0 m/s. The correlational analysis revealed that a larger shoulder internal rotation moment (r = 0.737), backwards shoulder plane of elevation moment (r = 0.614) and wrist extension moment (r = −0.564) were associated with greater racket head centre speed at racket–shuttlecock contact. Coaches should consider strengthening the musculature associated with shoulder internal rotation, plane of elevation and wrist extension. This work provides a unique analysis of the joint moments of the racket arm during the badminton jump smash performed by an elite population and highlights significant relationships between racket head speed and peak resultant joint moments.

The obtained results conclude piano players are highly prone to the risk of developing PRMSD in the upper body.The findings showed piano players have a higher NDI, lower CVA, and RSP when compared with the non-piano players at a statistically significant level of p-value0.05.Playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMSD) are a common problem for the pianist. The poor upper body ergonomics influences the natural positioning of the neck and shoulders, which involves forward head posture (FHP) and rounded shoulder posture (RSP). This misaligned position could produce a sensation of pain over the upper body, which affects the piano player and computer users with similar ergonomic posture. Recently, photogrammetry methods are commonly applied in a clinical setting to assess posture. The goal of this research is to compare the upper body playing-related muscu-loskeletal disorders between the piano and the non-piano players by applying photogrammetry.This causal-comparative study includes 70 participants with 35 piano and 35 non-piano players. The participant's FHP was assessed using a digitized photo to record the Craniovertebral angle (CVA) with the support of Kinovea software. Besides, digital Vernier Calliper used to assess the scapular index on the RSP and Neck disability indices (NDI) used to measure neck pain and functional disability of the participants.

Athletes who encounter repeated Functional Ankle Instability (FAI), exhibit excessive foot inversion during the various phases of gait than non-injured ankle. In gait, heel strike to toe off inversion ankle movement of the foot is controlled by eccentric function of the peroneus muscle, which stabilizes the ankle joint. As such, the purpose of this study was to investigate the response of biomechanical characteristics during gait cycle by applying neurodynamic exercise technique. An athlete with repeated FAI was checked for dynamic balance (Y-balance) and knee range of motion (using a electro-goniometer). To test the peroneal longus muscle activity and gait parameters, synchronisation of Surface Electromyography (sEMG) (Noraxon Myo-Muscle) was done with an instrumented myo-pressure treadmill in both injured and non-injured leg. Six-week post intervention measurements exhibited significant improvement in dynamic balance, knee range of motion, pain score, efficient peroneal muscle response and gait parameters. This ascertains the effect of neurodynamic technique.
