Introduction: Vestibular and visual information is used in determining spatial orientation. Existing computational models of orientation perception focus on the integration of visual and vestibular orientation information when both are available. It is well-known, and computational models capture, differences in spatial orientation perception with visual information or without (i.e., in the dark). For example, during earth vertical yaw rotation at constant angular velocity without visual information, humans perceive their rate of rotation to decay. However, during the same sustained rotation with visual information, humans can continue to more accurately perceive self-rotation. Prior to this study, there was no existing literature on human motion perception where visual information suddenly become available or unavailable during self-motion. Methods: Via a well verified psychophysical task, we obtained perceptual reports of self-rotation during various profiles of Earth-vertical yaw rotation. The task involved transitions in the availability of visual information (and control conditions with visual information available throughout the motion or unavailable throughout). Results: We found that when visual orientation information suddenly became available, subjects gradually integrated the new visual information over -10 seconds. In the opposite scenario (visual information suddenly removed), past visual information continued to impact subject perception of self-rotation for -30 seconds. We present a novel computational model of orientation perception that is consistent with the experimental results presented in this study. Discussion: The gradual integration of sudden loss or gain of visual information is achieved via low pass filtering in the visual angular velocity sensory conflict pathway. Animals use diverse sensory stimuli to navigate their environment and to recognize rewarding food sources. Honey bees use visual attributes of the targeted food source, such as its color, shape, size, direction and distance from the hive, and the landmarks around it to navigate during foraging. They transmit the location information of the food source to other bees if it is highly rewarding. To investigate the relative importance of these attributes, we trained bees to feeders in two different experiments. In the first experiment, we asked whether bees prefer to land on (a) a similar feeder at a different distance on the same heading or on (b) a visually distinct feeder located at the exact same location. We found that, within a short foraging range, bees relied heavily on the color and the shape of the food source and to a lesser extent on its distance from the hive. In the second experiment, we asked if moving the main landmark or the feeder (visual target) influenced recruitment dancing for the feeder. We found that foragers took longer to land and danced fewer circuits when the location of the food source, or a major landmark associated with it, changed. These results demonstrate that prominent visual attributes of food sources and landmarks are evidently more reliable than distance information and that foraging bees heavily utilize these visual cues at the later stages of their journey.

Ants are expert navigators combining innate and learnt navigational strategies. Whereas we know that the ants' feeding state segregates visual–navigational memories in ants navigating along a learnt route, it is an open question if the motivational state also affects the ants' innate visual preferences. Wood ant foragers show an innate attraction to conspicuous visual cues. These foragers inhabit cluttered woodland habitat and feed on honeydew from aphids on trees. Hence, the attraction to 'tree-like' objects might be an ecologically relevant behavior that is tailored to the wood ants' foraging ecology. Foragers from other ant species with different foraging ecologies show very different innate attractions. We investigated here the innate visual response of wood ant foragers with different motivational states, i.e., unfed or fed, as well as males that show no foraging activity. Our results show that ants from all three groups orient toward a prominent visual cue, i.e., this intrinsic visuomotor response is not context-dependent, but a hardwired behavior seen across different motivational and ecological contexts. Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) need to detect single objects for example when orienting to landmarks or hunting prey. The detection of single objects, described by the single target acuity (STA), cannot be deduced from formerly determined grating acuity (GA) as different mechanisms underlie STA and GA. Thus, we assessed STA for stationary and moving single targets with varying contrast in two harbor seals in a first approach in air. In a two-alternative-forced-choice discrimination task, the seals had to indicate whether the single target was presented in a left or right stimulus field on a monitor. The STA for full-contrast stationary targets was determined as 0.27 deg of visual angle for both experimental animals. Contrary to our expectations, neither adding motion nor reducing contrast had a strong impact on STA. Additionally, we also determined GA in the two harbor seals (1.2 and 1.1 cycles/deg or 0.42 and 0.45 deg for a single stripe of the grating at threshold) to be slightly inferior to STA. Our results are in good correspondence with contrast sensitivity and allow calculating viewing distances in the context of for example visual orientation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background While the coordination of oculomotor and manual behavior is essential for driving a car, surprisingly little is known about this interaction, especially in situations requiring a quick steering reaction. In the present study, we analyzed oculomotor gaze and manual steering behavior in approach and avoidance tasks. Three task blocks were implemented within a dynamic simulated driving environment requiring the driver either to steer away from/toward a visual stimulus or to switch between both tasks. Results Task blocks requiring task switches were associated with higher manual response times and increased error rates. Manual response times did not significantly differ depending on whether drivers had to steer away from vs toward a stimulus, whereas oculomotor response times and gaze pattern variability were increased when drivers had to steer away from a stimulus compared to steering toward a stimulus. Conclusion The increased manual response times and error rates in mixed tasks indicate performance costs associated with cognitive flexibility, while the increased oculomotor response times and gaze pattern variability indicate a parsimonious cross-modal action control strategy (avoiding stimulus fixation prior to steering away from it) for the avoidance scenario. Several discrepancies between these results and typical eye–hand interaction patterns in basic laboratory research suggest that the specific goals and complex perceptual affordances associated with driving a vehicle strongly shape cross-modal control of behavior.

В высших образовательных организациях игра в волейбол входит в рабочую программу «Элективные дисциплины по физической культуре и спорту», поэтому обучающиеся с интересом изучают особенности данной игры, занимаясь не только на учебных занятиях, но и на тренировочных внеучебных занятиях. Поэтому, играя в волейбол, студенты отрабатывают умения быстро реагировать на изменяющиеся ситуации, принимать правильные решения в различных обстоятельствах, выбирать наиболее целесообразные действия. В связи с этим, как показывает практика, интерес к тренировочным занятиям по волейболу возрос, это и определило актуальность педагогического исследования, в подборе наиболее эффективных комплексов специальных упражнений, развивающих быстроту реакции на движущийся объект у студентов, занимающихся в спортивной секции по волейболу

The leaf beetle Ambrostoma quadriimpressum (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is monophagous on elm trees, Ulmus pumila (Ulmaceae). As this species lives on elm during most of its life but pupates and overwinters as an adult in the soil, the flightless beetle seeks a host plant after emergence from the soil. Previous field experiments showed that the beetle locates host plants via orientation to standing black targets and does not recognize host plant prior to contact it. In order to establish the relationship between preferential vision fixation and host locating behavior, we investigated the visual orientation by placing individuals in the center of an arena and recording their responses to different targets at the perimeter. Responses were compared for a control object - a vertically positioned 10 × 30 cm black rectangle - versus a treatment object that differed from the control in terms of width, height, orientation, edge features, or color. Higher, wider, vertical, and solid black objects were more attractive to the beetle than objects that are shorter, thinner, inclined or have stripes, whereas two altering features (wavy or serrated) of the target's vertical edge had no effect. The red and black targets were equally attractive, whereas blue, green or yellow objects were less attractive than black ones, and adding a green disk at the top of a black target did no enhance attraction. These visual preferences corroborate that the beetle is attracted to objects that resemble a tree trunk during the field search for a host. Vertical representation is central to posture control, as well as to spatial perception and navigation. This representation has been studied for a long time in patients with vestibular disorders and more recently in patients with hemispheric damage, in particular in those with right lesions causing spatial or postural deficits. The aim of the study was to determine the brain areas involved in the visual perception of the vertical. Sixteen right-handed healthy participants were evaluated using fMRI while they were judging the verticality of lines or, in a control task, the color of the same lines. The brain bases of the vertical perception proved to involve a bilateral temporo-occipital and parieto-occipital cortical network, with a right dominance tendency, associated with cerebellar and brainstem areas. Consistent with the outcomes of neuroanatomical studies in stroke patients, The data of this original fMRI study in healthy subjects provides new insights into brain networks associated with vertical perception which is typically impaired in both vestibular and spatial neglect patients. Interestingly, these networks include not only brain areas associated with postural control but also areas implied in body representation.

Spatial perception in virtual environments has been a topic of intense research. Arguably, the majority of this work has focused on distance perception. However, orientation perception is also an important factor. In this paper, we systematically investigate allocentric orientation judgments in both real and virtual contexts over the course of four experiments. A pattern of sinusoidal judgment errors known to exist in 2D perspective displays is found to persist in immersive virtual environments. This pattern also manifests itself in a real world setting using two differing judgment methods. The findings suggest the presence of a radial anisotropy that persists across viewing contexts. Additionally, there is some evidence to suggest that observers have multiple strategies for processing orientations but further investigation is needed to fully describe this phenomenon. Central place foragers are faced with the challenge to learn the position of their nest entrance in its surroundings, in order to find their way back home every time they go out to search for food. To acquire navigational information at the beginning of their foraging career, Cataglyphis noda performs learning walks during the transition from interior worker to forager. These small loops around the nest entrance are repeatedly interrupted by strikingly accurate back turns during which the ants stop and precisely gaze back to the nest entrance--presumably to learn the landmark panorama of the nest surroundings. However, as at this point the complete navigational toolkit is not yet available, the ants are in need of a reference system for the compass component of the path integrator to align their nest entrance-directed gazes. In order to find this directional reference system, we systematically manipulated the skylight information received by ants during learning walks in their natural habitat, as it has been previously suggested that the celestial compass, as part of the path integrator, might provide such a reference system. High-speed video analyses of distinct learning walk elements revealed that even exclusion from the skylight polarization pattern, UV-light spectrum and the position of the sun did not alter the accuracy of the look back to the nest behavior. We therefore conclude that C. noda uses a different reference system to initially align their gaze directions. However, a comparison of neuroanatomical changes in the central complex and the mushroom bodies before and after learning walks revealed that exposure to UV light together with a naturally changing polarization pattern was essential to induce neuroplasticity in these high-order sensory integration centers of the ant brain. This suggests a crucial role of celestial information, in particular a changing polarization pattern, in initially calibrating the celestial compass system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the black chafer Holotrichia kiotonensis Brenske (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), mating behavior was observed between 1940 and 2010 hours at < 0.1 lx in both the laboratory and the field. In the laboratory, an ether extract of female abdominal glands induced a series of pre-mating behaviors such as short-distance orientation and abdominal bending. When the extract was fractionated by silica gel column chromatography, the active fraction was eluted with 50% ether in hexane and 100% ether. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed that both active fractions contained anthranilic acid (2-amino-benzoic acid) as a major compound. The amount of this compound was determined to be ca. 600 ng/female by high performance liquid chromatography analysis with a fluorescence detector. In the field, male chafers were observed to land on cotton balls impregnated with 10 mg of authentic anthranilic acid. When a white ball treated with anthranilic acid was placed 2-10 cm away from an untreated black ball, males were observed to land significantly more frequently on the latter. These results suggest that males could recognize white balls below 0.1 lx and landed on black balls. When a treated black ball was placed beside an untreated black ball, more males landed on the former. The difference was significant when the distance between the two lures was 5 or 10 cm, but not significant when it was 2 cm. These observations demonstrated that anthranilic acid was the sex-attractant pheromone for the black chafer H. kiotonensis and that the males located and landed on a pheromone source by using olfaction in conjunction with visual orientation. The importance of visual orientation in this nocturnal species is discussed in comparison with the congeneric diurnal species Holotrichia loochooana loochooana. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary The gaseous second messenger nitric oxide (NO) has been shown to regulate memory formation by activating retrograde signaling cascades from post- to presynapse that involve cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) production to induce synaptic plasticity and transcriptional changes. In this study, we analyzed the role of NO in the formation of a visual working memory that lasts only a few seconds. This memory is encoded in a subset of ring neurons that form the ellipsoid body in the Drosophila brain. Using genetic and pharmacological manipulations, we show that NO signaling is required for cGMP-mediated CREB activation, leading to the expression of competence factors like the synaptic homer protein. Interestingly, this cell-autonomous function can also be fulfilled by hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) through a converging pathway, revealing for the first time that endogenously produced H 2 S has a role in memory processes. Notably, the NO synthase is strictly localized to the axonal output branches of the ring neurons, and this localization seems to be necessary for a second, phasic role of NO signaling. We provide evidence for a model where NO modulates the opening of cGMP-regulated cation channels to encode a short-term memory trace. Local production of NO/cGMP in restricted branches of ring neurons seems to represent the engram for objects, and comparing signal levels between individual ring neurons is used to orient the fly during search behavior. Due to its short half-life, NO seems to be a uniquely suited second messenger to encode working memories that have to be restricted in their duration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Orienting a logo upward or downward may seem like an arbitrary graphic design decision, but we propose that it can have important implications for consumer judgments. In particular, we find across four experimental studies and a content analysis that diagonal direction can convey different levels of activity with upward—or ascending—diagonals conveying greater activity and effort than downward—or descending—diagonals. Consequently, when the context highlights the benefits of activity (vs. passivity), upward (vs. downward) diagonals lead to more favorable product judgments, greater product efficacy beliefs, and greater post-consumption satisfaction. Furthermore, we provide process evidence that perceived product efficacy beliefs mediate these effects, and that the effect is strongest when the object being visually oriented is text rather than images. These findings are particularly important in light of our content analysis findings that diagonal orientation is a relatively underutilized design feature. Collectively, our findings suggest that firms should use upward diagonals when the product context highlights a favorable view of activity. Otherwise, the firm should use downward diagonals, especially when the product context encourages consumers to view passivity favorably. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aimed at investigating the consequences of a massive loss of somatosensory inputs on the perception of spatial orientation. The occurrence of possible compensatory processes for external (i.e., object) orientation perception and self-orientation perception was examined by manipulating visual and/or vestibular cues. To that aim, we compared perceptual responses of a deafferented patient (GL) with respect to age-matched Controls in two tasks involving gravity-related judgments. In the first task, subjects had to align a visual rod with the gravitational vertical (i.e., Subjective Visual Vertical: SVV) when facing a tilted visual frame in a classic Rod-and-Frame Test. In the second task, subjects had to report whether they felt tilted when facing different visuo-postural conditions which consisted in very slow pitch tilts of the body and/or visual surroundings away from vertical. Results showed that, much more than Controls, the deafferented patient was fully dependent on spatial cues issued from the visual frame when judging the SVV. On the other hand, the deafferented patient did not rely at all on visual cues for self-tilt detection. Moreover, the patient never reported any sensation of tilt up to 18 deg contrary to Controls, hence showing that she did not rely on vestibular (i.e., otoliths) signals for the detection of very slow body tilts either. Overall, this study demonstrates that a massive somatosensory deficit substantially impairs the perception of spatial orientation, and that the use of the remaining sensory inputs available to a deafferented patient differs regarding whether the judgment concerns external versus self-orientation.

The objective of the current driving simulator study ( N = 20) was to assess brake reaction time (BRT) and subjective experiences of visual (V), tactile (T), and visual–tactile (VT) collision warnings when the drivers’ visual orientation was manipulated between four locations (i.e., road and three different mirror locations). V warning was a blinking light in a windscreen, T warning was implemented by a vibrating accelerator pedal, and VT warning was their synchronous combination. The results showed that all the warning stimuli were detected in 100% accuracy in all visual orientations, but T and VT warnings produced significantly faster BRTs when compared to V warning. It was found that BRT to V warning was the slowest while observing the furthermost side mirror. However, BRTs following T and VT warnings remained unaffected by the visual orientations. Both the objective BRT measurements and subjective evaluations indicated a superiority of T and VT warnings against a sole V warning, not only in general terms, but also separately for different visual orientations. Self-orientation perception relies on the integration of multiple sensory inputs which convey spatially-related visual and postural cues. In the present study, an experimental set-up was used to tilt the body and/or the visual scene to investigate how these postural and visual cues are integrated for self-tilt perception (the subjective sensation of being tilted). Participants were required to repeatedly rate a confidence level for self-tilt perception during slow (0.05°·s − 1 ) body and/or visual scene pitch tilts up to 19° relative to vertical. Concurrently, subjects also had to perform arm reaching movements toward a body-fixed target at certain specific angles of tilt. While performance of a concurrent motor task did not influence the main perceptual task, self-tilt detection did vary according to the visuo-postural stimuli. Slow forward or backward tilts of the visual scene alone did not induce a marked sensation of self-tilt contrary to actual body tilt. However, combined body and visual scene tilt influenced self-tilt perception more strongly, although this effect was dependent on the direction of visual scene tilt: only a forward visual scene tilt combined with a forward body tilt facilitated self-tilt detection. In such a case, visual scene tilt did not seem to induce vection but rather may have produced a deviation of the perceived orientation of the longitudinal body axis in the forward direction, which may have lowered the self-tilt detection threshold during actual forward body tilt. Sensory systems encode the environment in egocentric (e.g., eye, head, or body) reference frames, creating inherently unstable representations that shift and rotate as we move. However, it is widely speculated that the brain transforms these signals into an allocentric, gravity-centered representation of the world that is stable and independent of the observer's spatial pose. Where and how this representation maybe achieved is currently unknown. Here we demonstrate that a subpopulation of neurons in the macaque caudal intraparietal area (CIP) visually encodes object tilt in nonegocentric coordinates defined relative to the gravitational vector. Neuronal responses to the tilt of a visually presented planar surface were measured with the monkey in different spatial orientations (upright and rolled left/right ear down) and then compared. This revealed a continuum of representations in which planar tilt was encoded in a gravity-centered reference frame in approximately one-tenth of the comparisons, intermediate reference frames ranging between gravity-centered and egocentric in approximately two-tenths of the comparisons, and in an egocentric reference frame in less than half of the comparisons. Altogether, almost half of the comparisons revealed a shift in the preferred tilt and/or a gain change consistent with encoding object orientation in nonegocentric coordinates. Through neural network modeling, we further show that a purely gravity-centered representation of object tilt can be achieved directly from the population activity of CIP-like units. These results suggest that area CIP may play a key role in creating a stable, allocentric representation of the environment defined relative to an "earth-vertical" direction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
