PurposeTo evaluate functional and structural assessments as endpoints for clinical trials for USH2A-related retinal degeneration.MethodsPeople with biallelic disease-causing variants in USH2A, visual acuity ≥ 20/80, and visual field ≥ 10° diameter were enrolled in a 4-year, natural history study. Participants underwent static perimetry, microperimetry, visual acuity, fullfield stimulus testing (FST), and optical coherence tomography annually. Rates of change estimated from mixed-effects linear models and percentages of eyes with changes exceeding the coefficient of repeatability (CoR) or thresholds conforming with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines were evaluated.ResultsRates of change were generally more sensitive to change than proportions of eyes exceeding a threshold such as the CoR. Baseline ellipsoid zone area ≥ 3 mm2 was necessary to detect change. Mean sensitivity and volumetric hill of vision measures on static perimetry had similar properties and were the most sensitive to changes of the continuous measures. The highest 4-year proportions of eyes exceeding the CoR were from FST testing (47%) and microperimetry (32%). Specification of loci as functional transition points (FTPs) resulted in 45% (static perimetry) and 46% (microperimetry) at 4 years, meeting FDA guidelines for progression.ConclusionsRate of change of mean sensitivity on static perimetry was a sensitive perimetric continuous measure. Percentages of within-eye change were largest with FST testing and microperimetry. FTPs appear to be particularly sensitive to change. These results affect clinical trial design for USH2A-related retinal degeneration.Translational relevanceAnalyses of natural history data from the Rate of Progression in USH2A-Related Retinal Degeneration (RUSH2A) study can inform eligibility criteria and endpoints for clinical trials.

PURPOSE: In the past few decades, the prevalence of myopia, where the eye grows too long, has increased dramatically. The visual environment appears to be critical to regulating the eye growth. Thus, it is very important to determine the properties of the environment that put children at risk for myopia. Researchers have suggested that the intensity of illumination and range of distances to which a childs eyes are exposed are important, but this has not been confirmed. METHODS: We designed, built, and tested an inexpensive, child-friendly, head-mounted device that can measure the intensity and spectral content of illumination approaching the eyes and can also measure the distances to which the central visual field of the eyes are exposed. The device is mounted on a childs bicycle helmet. It includes a camera that measures distances over a substantial range and a six-channel spectral sensor. The sensors are hosted by a light-weight, battery-powered microcomputer. We acquired pilot data from children while they were engaged in various indoor and outdoor activities. RESULTS: The device proved to be comfortable, easy, and safe to wear, and able to collect very useful data on the statistics of illumination and distances. CONCLUSIONS: The designed device is an ideal tool to be used in a population of young children, some of whom will later develop myopia and some of whom will not. TRANSLATIONAL RELEVANCE: Such data would be critical for determining the properties of the visual environment that put children at risk for becoming myopic.

A catalogue of neuronal cell types has often been called a 'parts list' of the brain1, and regarded as a prerequisite for understanding brain function2,3. In the optic lobe of Drosophila, rules of connectivity between cell types have already proven to be essential for understanding fly vision4,5. Here we analyse the fly connectome to complete the list of cell types intrinsic to the optic lobe, as well as the rules governing their connectivity. Most new cell types contain 10 to 100 cells, and integrate information over medium distances in the visual field. Some existing type families (Tm, Li, and LPi)6-10 at least double in number of types. A new serpentine medulla (Sm) interneuron family contains more types than any other. Three families of cross-neuropil types are revealed. The consistency of types is demonstrated by analysing the distances in high-dimensional feature space, and is further validated by algorithms that select small subsets of discriminative features. We use connectivity to hypothesize about the functional roles of cell types in motion, object and colour vision. Connectivity with 'boundary types' that straddle the optic lobe and central brain is also quantified. We showcase the advantages of connectomic cell typing: complete and unbiased sampling, a rich array of features based on connectivity and reduction of the connectome to a substantially simpler wiring diagram of cell types, with immediate relevance for brain function and development.

PURPOSE: This study uses deep neural network-generated rim-to-disc area ratio (RADAR) measurements and the disc damage likelihood scale (DDLS) to measure the rate of optic disc rim loss in a large cohort of glaucoma patients. METHODS: A deep neural network was used to calculate RADAR and DDLS for each optic disc photograph (ODP). Patient demographics, diagnosis, intraocular pressure (IOP), and mean deviation (MD) from perimetry were analyzed as risk factors for faster progression of RADAR. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to compare RADAR and DDLS in their utility to distinguish glaucoma from glaucoma suspect (GS) and for detecting glaucoma progression. RESULTS: A total of 13,679 ODPs with evidence of glaucomatous optic nerve damage from 4106 eyes of 2407 patients with glaucoma or GS were included. Of these eyes, 3264 (79.5%) had a diagnosis of glaucoma, and 842 (20.5%) eyes were GS. Mean ± SD baseline RADAR of GS and glaucoma were 0.67 ± 0.13 and 0.57 ± 0.18, respectively (P < 0.001). Older age, greater IOP fluctuation, baseline MD, right eye, and diagnosis of secondary open-angle glaucoma were associated with slope of RADAR. The mean baseline DDLS of GS and glaucoma were 3.78 and 4.39, respectively. Both RADAR and DDLS showed a less steep slope in advanced glaucoma. In glaucoma, the change of RADAR and DDLS correlated with the corresponding change in MD. RADAR and DDLS had a similar ability to discriminate glaucoma from GS and detect disease progression. Area under the ROC curve of RADAR and DDLS was 0.658 and 0.648. CONCLUSIONS: Automated calculation of RADAR and DDLS with a neural network can be used to evaluate the extent and long-term rate of optic disc rim loss and is further evidence of long-term nerve fiber loss in treated patients with glaucoma. TRANSLATIONAL RELEVANCE: Our study provides a large clinic-based experience for RADAR and DDLS measurements in GS and glaucoma with a neural network.

PURPOSE: To evaluate Humphrey Visual Field (HVF) test reliability and its associated risk factors in children with glaucoma or glaucoma suspect. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: None. SETTING: Single-center childhood glaucoma clinic. PATIENT POPULATION: One hundred thirty-six patients aged ≤18 years with glaucoma/glaucoma suspect, and least 1 completed 24 to 2 HVF test between 2018 and 2023. OBSERVATION PROCEDURE: Demographic and clinical characteristics including age, primary language, visual acuity (VA), and glaucoma diagnosis were extracted from electronic health records. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: HVF 24 to 2 testing metrics, including FP, FN, and FL. Tests were defined as reliable using manufacturer guidelines of ≤33% FP, ≤33% FN, and ≤20% FL. For each patient, a reliability score was calculated as the percentage of reliable tests among all tests completed. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to determine factors associated with test-level reliability (yes/no). A multivariable linear regression model was used to determine factors associated with patient-level reliability score. RESULTS: Among 634 HVFs from 136 patients (Mean ± SD age at first test 12.0 ± 3.2 years, 47.8% female), 51.3% were reliable. Older age, better baseline VA, and English as primary language were associated with greater odds of test-level reliability (P < .04). Mean ± SD patient-level reliability score was 51.7 ± 38.1%. Older age at first clinic visit, better baseline VA, and English as primary language were associated with higher reliability scores (all P < .02), and number of prior VF tests was not (P = .56). CONCLUSIONS: Younger age, worse visual acuity, and non-English as primary language were associated with decreased reliability and should be considered when interpreting VF testing in children. A significant learning effect was not observed with repeated testing.

BackgroundTo examine long-term retinal nerve fibre layer thickness (RNFLT) variability and associated clinical factors in African (AD) and European descent (ED) individuals with glaucoma.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study included glaucoma eyes of AD and ED from Diagnostic Innovations in Glaucoma Study/The African Descent and Glaucoma Evaluation Study with ≥4 visits/2 years of follow-up. We calculated optic nerve head RNFLT variability per-examination/visit as the absolute error of its residuals across follow-up. Full, baseline and parsimonious linear-mixed models were fit to evaluate the effects of clinical factors (demographics and ocular characteristics, prior/intervening glaucoma surgeries and cataract extraction (CE), RNFLT thinning rate, scan quality, visit/testing frequency, etc) on RNFLT variability in both races.ResultsThere were 376 and 625 eyes (226 and 349 participants) of AD and ED, and the mean (95% CI) RNFLT variability was 1.62 (1.52, 1.71) µm and 1.42 (1.34, 1.50) µm, respectively (p=0.002). Background/aimsTo investigate the association between longitudinal changes of foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area and the rate of structural and functional progression in glaucoma.MethodsA longitudinal cohort included 115 eyes (46 glaucoma suspect and 66 primary open-angle glaucoma) of 81 patients having ≥2 year follow-up, and ≥4 visits with optical coherence tomography angiography and visual field (VF). Eyes in the longitudinal cohort with a slope greater than that found in 95 percentile of separate healthy test-retest series for FAZ area were categorised into FAZ progressors; all other eyes were defined as FAZ non-progressors. A generalised linear mixed-effect model was used to investigate the association of FAZ progressors with demographic and clinical characteristics.ResultsFaster ganglion cell complex (GCC) thinning and faster VF mean deviation (MD) loss were found in eyes with FAZ progressors compared with FAZ non-progressors (mean difference: -0.7 (95% CI, -1.4 to -0.1) µm/y; p=0.026, -0.3 (-0.5 to -0.1) dB/y; p=0.017, respectively), while whole image vessel density was not associated with FAZ progressors (p=0.929). SD of intraocular pressure (IOP) and IOP range were also associated with FAZ progressors in separate multivariable models (OR: 1.54 (1.02 to 2.32) per 1 mm Hg higher, p=0.041; OR: 1.20 (1.01 to 1.41) per 1 mm Hg higher; p=0.035, respectively).ConclusionsSignificant FAZ increase was weakly associated with moderately faster rates of both GCC thinning and VF MD loss, but not macular vessel density change in glaucoma eyes. Additional studies are needed to elucidate the pathophysiological associations between macula GCC thinning and FAZ area increases in glaucoma.

AIM: We tested the hypothesis that visual field (VF) progression can be predicted with a deep learning model based on longitudinal pairs of optic disc photographs (ODP) acquired at earlier time points during follow-up. METHODS: 3919 eyes (2259 patients) with ≥2 ODPs at least 2 years apart, and ≥5 24-2 VF exams spanning ≥3 years of follow-up were included. Serial VF mean deviation (MD) rates of change were estimated starting at the fifth visit and subsequently by adding visits until final visit. VF progression was defined as a statistically significant negative slope at two consecutive visits and final visit. We built a twin-neural network with ResNet50-backbone. A pair of ODPs acquired up to a year before the VF progression date or the last VF in non-progressing eyes were included as input. Primary outcome measures were area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and model accuracy. RESULTS: The average (SD) follow-up time and baseline VF MD were 8.1 (4.8) years and -3.3 (4.9) dB, respectively. VF progression was identified in 761 eyes (19%). The median (IQR) time to progression in progressing eyes was 7.3 (4.5-11.1) years. The AUC and accuracy for predicting VF progression were 0.862 (0.812-0.913) and 80.0% (73.9%-84.6%). When only fast-progressing eyes were considered (MD rate < -1.0 dB/year), AUC increased to 0.926 (0.857-0.994). CONCLUSIONS: A deep learning model can predict subsequent glaucoma progression from longitudinal ODPs with clinically relevant accuracy. This model may be implemented, after validation, for predicting glaucoma progression in the clinical setting.

PurposeTo compare rates of retinal nerve fiber layer change over time in healthy, eyes with nonprogressing glaucoma and eyes with progressing glaucoma using single wide-field (SWF) and optic nerve head (ONH) cube scan optical coherence tomography (OCT) images.MethodsForty-five eyes of 25 healthy individuals and 263 eyes of 161 glaucoma patients from the Diagnostic Innovations in Glaucoma Study were included. All eyes underwent 24-2 visual field testing and OCT (Spectralis SD-OCT) ONH and macular imaging. SWF images (up to 43° × 28°) were created by stitching together ONH cube scans centered on the optic disc and macular cube scans centered on the fovea. Visual field progression was defined as guided progression analysis likely progression and/or a significant (P < 0.01) mean deviation slope of less than -1.0 dB/year. Mixed effects models were used to compare rates of change. Highly myopic eyes were included.ResultsThirty glaucomatous eyes were classified as progressing. In eyes with glaucoma, mean global rate of change was -1.22 µm/year (P < 0.001) using SWF images and -0.83 µm/year (P = 0.003) using ONH cube scans. Rate of change was significantly greater in eyes with progressing glaucoma compared with eyes with nonprogressing glaucoma (-1.51 µm/year vs. -1.24 µm/year; P = 0.002) using SWF images and was similar using ONH cube scans (P = 0.27).ConclusionsIn this cohort that includes eyes with and without high axial myopia, the mean rate of retinal nerve fiber layer thinning measured using SWF images was faster in eyes with progressing glaucoma than in eyes with nonprogressing glaucoma. Wide-field OCT images including the ONH and macula can be effective for monitoring glaucomatous progression in patients with and without high myopia.

PurposeTo report on cases of unilateral perimacular atrophy after treatment with voretigene neparvovec-rzyl, in the setting of previous contralateral eye treatment with a different viral vector.DesignSingle-center, retrospective chart review.MethodsIn this case series, four patients between the ages of six and 11 years old with RPE65-related retinopathy were treated unilaterally with rAAV2-CB-hRPE65 as part of a gene augmentation clinical trial (NCT00749957). Six to 10 years later the contralateral eyes were treated with the Food and Drug Administration-approved drug, voretigene neparvovec-rzyl. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), fundus photos, ocular coherence tomography, two-color dark-adapted perimetry, full field stimulus threshold testing (FST), and location of subretinal bleb and chorioretinal atrophy were evaluated.ResultsThree out of four patients showed unilateral perimacular atrophy after treatment with voretigene, ranging from five to 22 months after treatment. Areas of robust visual field improvement were followed by areas of chorioretinal atrophy. Despite perimacular changes, BCVA, FST, and subjective improvements in vision and nyctalopia were maintained. Perimacular atrophy was not observed in the first eye treated with the previous viral vector.ConclusionsWe observed areas of robust visual field improvement followed by perimacular atrophy in voretigene treated eyes, as compared to the initially treated contralateral eyes.Translational relevanceCaution is advised when using two different viral vectors between eyes in gene therapy. This may become an important issue in the future with increasing gene therapy clinical trials for inherited retinal dystrophies.

PurposeTo assess the feasibility and performance of Vivid Vision Perimetry (VVP), a new virtual reality (VR)-based visual field platform.MethodsChildren 7-18 years of age with visual acuity of 20/80 or better undergoing Humphrey visual field (HVF) testing were recruited to perform VVP, a VR-based test that uses suprathreshold stimuli to test 54 field locations and calculates a fraction seen score. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to evaluate correlation between HVF mean sensitivity and VVP mean fraction seen scores. Participants were surveyed regarding their experience.ResultsA total of 37 eyes of 23 participants (average age, 12.9 ± 3.1 years; 48% female) were included. All participants successfully completed VVP testing. Diagnoses included glaucoma (12), glaucoma suspect (7), steroid-induced ocular hypertension (3), and craniopharyngioma (1). Sixteen participants had prior HVF experience, and none had prior VVP experience, although 7 had previously used VR. Of the 23 HVF tests performed, 9 (39%) were unreliable due to fixation losses, false positives, or false negatives. Similarly, 35% of VVP tests were unreliable (as defined by accuracy of blind spot detection). Excluding unreliable HVF tests, the correlation between HVF average mean sensitivity and VVP mean fraction seen score was 0.48 (P = 0.02; 95% CI, 0.09-0.74). When asked about preference for the VVP or HVF examination, all participants favored the VVP, and 70% were "very satisfied" with VVP.ConclusionsIn our cohort of 23 pediatric subjects, VVP proved to be a clinically feasible VR-based visual field testing, which was uniformly preferred over HVF.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of eccentric-vision training on population receptive field (pRF) estimates to provide insights into brain plasticity processes driven by practice. Fifteen participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measurements before and after behavioral training on a visual crowding task, where the relative orientation of the opening (gap position: up/down, left/right) in a Landolt C optotype had to be discriminated in the presence of flanking ring stimuli. Drifting checkerboard bar stimuli were used for pRF size estimation in multiple regions of interest (ROIs): dorsal-V1 (dV1), dorsal-V2 (dV2), ventral-V1 (vV1), and ventral-V2 (vV2), including the visual cortex region corresponding to the trained retinal location. pRF estimates in V1 and V2 were obtained along eccentricities from 0.5° to 9°. Statistical analyses revealed a significant decrease of the crowding anisotropy index (p = 0.009) after training, indicating improvement on crowding task performance following training. Notably, pRF sizes at and near the trained location decreased significantly (p = 0.005). Dorsal and ventral V2 exhibited significant pRF size reductions, especially at eccentricities where the training stimuli were presented (p < 0.001). In contrast, no significant changes in pRF estimates were found in either vV1 (p = 0.181) or dV1 (p = 0.055) voxels. These findings suggest that practice on a crowding task can lead to a reduction of pRF sizes in trained visual cortex, particularly in V2, highlighting the plasticity and adaptability of the adult visual system induced by prolonged training.

Background/aimsTo assess the long-term variability of macular optical coherence tomography (OCT)/OCT angiography (OCTA) and visual field (VF) parameters.MethodsHealthy and glaucoma eyes with ≥1-year follow-up were included. 24-2 VF and macular OCT/OCTA parameters, including VF mean deviation (MD), whole-image vessel density (wiVD) and ganglion cell complex thickness (wiGCC) were analysed. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), root mean squared error (RMSE), within-subject test-retest SD (Sw) and test-retest variability were calculated for stable eye cohort (max follow-up=1.5 years). Rates of change and RMSE were evaluated in the extended cohort including all eyes (unlimited follow-up).ResultsFrom a total of 230 eyes (150 participants; age=67.7 years), 86 eyes (37%, 62 participants) were stable. In stable eyes, OCT parameters showed the highest mean (95%) ICC (wiGCC=0.99 (0.99, 0.99)), followed by VF (VF MD=0.91 (0.88, 0.93)) and OCTA (wiVD=0.82 (0.75, 0.87)). RMSE and Sw for VF MD were 0.92 dB and 0.81 dB, respectively, for wiVD were 1.64% and 1.48%, respectively, and for wiGCC, 0.91 µm and 0.78 µm, respectively. The long-term test-rest variability of VF MD, wiVD and wiGCC was 2.2 dB, 4.1% and 2.2 µm, respectively. Goal-directed visual attention is a fundamental cognitive process that enables animals to selectively focus on specific regions of the visual field while filtering out irrelevant information. However, given the domain specificity of social behaviors, it remains unclear whether attention to faces versus nonfaces recruits different neurocognitive processes. In this study, we simultaneously recorded activity from temporal and frontal nodes of the attention network whilemacaques performed a goal-directed visual search task. V4 and inferotemporal (IT) visual category-selective units, selected during cue presentation, discriminated fixations on targets and distractors during the search but were differentially engaged by face and house targets. V4 and IT category-selective units also encoded fixation transitions and search dynamics. Comparedwith distractors, fixations on targets reduced spike--LFP coherence within the temporal cortex. Importantly, targetinduced desynchronization between the temporal and prefrontal cortices was only evident for face targets, suggesting that attention to faces differentially engaged the prefrontal cortex. We further revealed bidirectional theta influence between the temporal and prefrontal cortices using Granger causality, which was again disproportionate for faces. Finally, we showed that the search became more efficient with increasing target-induced desynchronization. Polar angle asymmetries (PAAs), the differences in perceptual experiences and performance across different regions of the visual field are present in various paradigms and tasks of visual perception. Currently, research in this area is sparse, particularly regarding the influence of PAAs during perceptual illusions, highlighting a gap in visual cognition studies. We aim to fill this gap by measuring PAAs across the visual field during an illusion applied to test conscious vision widely. Motion-induced blindness (MIB) is an illusion when a peripheral target disappears from consciousness as the result of a continuously moving background pattern. During MIB we separately measured the average disappearance time of peripheral targets in eight equidistant visual field positions. Our results indicate a significant variation in MIB disappearance times and frequencies as a function of target location. Specifically, we found shorter and fewer disappearances along the cardinal compared to oblique directions, and along the horizontal compared to the vertical meridian. Purpose: To investigate the factors affecting visual field recovery in patients with pituitary adenoma following surgical removal, both eyes of 35 patients with pituitary adenoma who had been followed up for > six months post-surgery were retrospectively analyzed. Material and methods: Pre- and post-operative visual acuity, visual field test, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness were investigated. The average age of the 35 patients was 58.3 ± 11.5 years. Preoperatively, 30 eyes (mean average RNFL thickness, 99.73 ± 5.89 μm) and 40 eyes (mean average RNFL thickness, 77.55 ± 8.35 μm) were included in the thick (≥ 90 μm) and thin RNFL group (< 90 μm), respectively. Results: In the thick RNFL group, pre- and post-operative mean deviation (MD) and pattern standard deviation (PSD) were favorable (all p < 0.001), and the proportion of eyes of postoperative MD change which were stable or improved was greater than in the thin RNFL group (p = 0.042). Preoperative MD, RNFL (except nasal quadrant) and GCIPL thickness were positively correlated to postoperative MD values (all, p < 0.05). Preoperative MD and temporal RNFL thickness were significantly correlated with postoperative MD change rate (p = 0.03 and 0.04, respectively). Preoperative GC IPL thickness and postoperative MD change rate were not significantly correlated (p = 0.61). Using univariate regression analysis, preoperative best corrected visual acuity (Odds ratio [OR], 0.050; p < 0.001), tumor volume (OR, 1.110, p = 0.002), higher preoperative MD values (OR, 0.858; p < 0.001), lower preoperative PSD values (OR, 1.169, p = 0.002), thick RNFL (OR, 0.215; p = 0.003) and thick GCIPL (OR, 0.305, p = 0.018) were significantly associated with a good visual field outcome following surgery. According to multivariate analysis, any other parameters were not significant. In patients with thick RNFL, postoperative MD values were better than in the thin RNFL group. Conclusions: Eyes with preoperative higher MD and thick temporal RNFL showed more improvement in their visual fields postoperative. Preoperative thick RNFL could be a potential predictor of visual field recovery following TSA-TR, while macular GCIPL thickness does not appear to be a reliable predictor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metaphors play a crucial role in language, thinking, and communication. Emoji, as modern metaphors, carry rich meanings and significantly impact emotional expression. While spatial metaphors in emotional lexicons are confirmed, empirical evidence for spatial metaphors in emoji is scarce, and their neural mechanisms are largely unexplored. This study used a spatial Stroop task to investigate emoji spatial metaphors and their effects on emotional perception and neural mechanisms. The results showed that when the positive emoji were in the upper visual field, compared with the middle and lower visual field, the ability to perceive positive emotions was significantly enhanced; Conversely, when the negative emotion emoji was in the lower visual field, the perception of negative emotion was significantly enhanced compared to the middle visual field. EEG data indicate that inconsistencies between Emoji spatial positions and emotional valence lead to increased amplitudes of the Late Positive Component (LPC), revealing heightened neural activity. The multi-task learning model is a learning paradigm that shares features across multiple tasks, and it has achieved great success in fields such as computer vision and natural language processing etc. Multiple tasks often conflict and even compete with each other, which seriously reduces the model performance of multi task learning. Most existing optimization methods alleviate multi task gradient conflicts by adjusting task weights. However, it is also important to consider the magnitude and direction of task gradients during the training process. The magnitude and direction of task gradients reflect the conflict and dominance among tasks, which can disrupt the training process and cause instability. In this paper, we present a rescaling and balancing approach for tackling conflicting and dominating gradients. The approach employs a projecting conflict strategy to mitigate the influence of conflicting gradients from multiple tasks and utilize rescaling and balancing techniques to mitigate gradient dominance during training. The proposed method comprehensively considers the weighting, magnitude, and directions of gradients from tasks. The application of attention mechanisms, especially channel attention, has achieved huge success in the field of computer vision. However, existing methods mainly focus on more sophisticated attention modules for better performance, but ignore global and local contexts in the frequency domain. This work focuses on the channel relationship and proposes a novel architectural unit called Frequency Global and Local (FGL) context block. It adaptively recalibrates global-local channel-wise feature responses by explicitly modeling interdependencies between channels in the frequency domain. The proposed lightweight FGL module is efficient well generalizable across different datasets. Meanwhile, the FGL context block significantly improves the performance of existing convolutional neural networks (CNNs) at a slight computational cost. Our FGL module is extensively evaluated with applications of image classification, object detection, and semantic segmentation with the backbones of ResNets, MobileNetV2, and MobileNeXt. Recently, the task of radiology image report generation has been highly favored by researchers. Research on this task not only alleviates the tedious work of radiologists but also enhances the healthcare standards in underdeveloped regions. The previous methods primarily followed the image captioning task, using an encoder-decoder architecture to forcibly align the visual and textual domains. However, they overlooked the cross-modal semantic gap between the visual and textual fields. Based on the multi-expert collaborative diagnosis model used in hospitals, we have developed a "multi-expert diagnostic" mechanism to bridge the gap between these modalities. To achieve this, we propose Multi expert Diagnostic Module(MeDM), whose key design involves introducing multiple learnable matrices to replace the expert's brain for interactive learning between radiology images and their corresponding reports. Specifically, we interact each expert matrix with visual-textual features to capture abundant multimodal information. To ensure that different expert matrices focus on various feature information, they are constrained by an orthogonal loss. Additionally, we have designed a lightweight Diagnostic Fusion Module(DFM) to integrate and summarize the results from multiple expert matrices. Unlike in the field of visual scene recognition, where tremendous advances have taken place due to the availability of very large datasets to train deep neural networks, inference from medical images is often hampered by the fact that only small amounts of data may be available. When working with very small dataset problems, of the order of a few hundred items of data, the power of deep learning may still be exploited by using a pre-trained model as a feature extractor and carrying out classic pattern recognition techniques in this feature space, the so-called few-shot learning problem. However, medical images are highly complex and variable, making it difficult for few-shot learning to fully capture and model these features. To address these issues, we focus on the intrinsic characteristics of the data. We find that, in regimes where the dimension of the feature space is comparable to or even larger than the number of images in the data, dimensionality reduction is a necessity and is often achieved by principal component analysis or singular value decomposition (PCA/SVD). In this paper, noting the inappropriateness of using SVD for this setting we explore two alternatives based on discriminant analysis (DA) and non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). Using 14 different datasets spanning 11 distinct disease types we demonstrate that at low dimensions, discriminant subspaces achieve significant improvements over SVD-based subspaces and the original feature space. Background and Aim Methods Results Conclusions Gel immersion (GI) endoscopy provides a good visual field in endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD); however, its clinical outcomes are poorly understood. This study aimed to compare the treatment outcomes between esophageal gel immersion endoscopic submucosal dissection (GI‐ESD) and conventional ESD (C‐ESD) to determine the safety and efficacy of GI‐ESD.The data of 71 consecutive patients who underwent esophageal ESD between April 2021 and March 2023 at a Japanese tertiary center were retrospectively reviewed. GI was achieved using an additional irrigation tube. The treatment outcomes between the GI‐ESD and C‐ESD groups were compared using inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) to control for confounding factors.A total of 75 superficial esophageal epithelial neoplasms (41 in the C‐ESD and 34 in the GI‐ESD groups) were treated using ESD. The mean procedure time in the GI‐ESD group was significantly shorter than that in the C‐ESD group (59.2 ± 36.2 vs 85.3 ± 45.7 min, P = 0.008). After IPTW adjustment, the mean procedural times were 62.6 ± 36.6 and 82.9 ± 41.7 min in the GI‐ESD and C‐ESD groups, respectively (P = 0.037), and the incidence rate of muscle layer damage was 4.2% in the GI‐ESD group and 30.6% in the C‐ESD group (P = 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, specimen size ≥ 30 mm (odds ratio [OR]: 9.44, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.46–36.30, P = 0.001) was positively correlated with longer procedural time (≥ 90 min), whereas GI‐ESD (OR: 0.19, 95%CI: 0.05–0.68, P = 0.011) showed a negative association.Esophageal GI‐ESD may be useful in terms of safety and time efficiency. Background: Computerised static visual field testing using dedicated machines such as the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) can assess and track changes in visual field sensitivity. The use of retrospective visual field databases is a novel undertaking, with no studies published utilising large scale population‐level data. This study phase developed a method to extract HFA data into a large standardised population‐based database including point sensitivity data with additional derived variables. Methods: Retrospective, longitudinal, population study of visual field data from people who attended an ophthalmology service and had a HFA field test, in Western Australia, between 1988 and 2022. Raw test data included patient demographic fields, sensitivity readings and test parameters. Calculated fields included reliability scores, and a novel combined reliability score. Results: There were 606 230 tests for 92 215 study individuals, from 22 ophthalmology practices in metropolitan Perth and three public hospital eye clinics, representing around 85% of the field tests performed by ophthalmologists each year. Raw sensitivity values were available for all tests, and additional descriptors were available for most tests (97.5%–100% of tests) with the exception of data variables retired by the manufacturer. Conclusions: Visual field data from 606 230 tests were collated into a single dataset, which is highly representative over a long period of time, for a defined population. Objective: To estimate the prevalence and cumulative incidence of neuro‐retinal‐disorders (NRD) in HIV‐controllers. Design: Prospective, single‐centre, cohort study of people living with HIV (PLWH): elite‐controllers, long‐term‐non‐progressors and early diagnosed. Methods: The study compared "HIV‐controllers" (including elite‐controllers and long‐term‐non‐progressors), who were not on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and "HIV‐treatment" (HIV‐infected subjects with a recent diagnosis and on ART). A matched cohort of "non‐HIV subjects" was created. NRD was defined as at least one altered (not normal) ophthalmological parameter (functional or structural). Functional (visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, chromatic vision, visual field) and structural parameters (ganglion cells, macular nerve fibre layer, peripapillary nerve fibre layers, vascular calibre) as well as quality of life (Medical Outcomes Study‐HIV Short Form‐30) were assessed. Results: Between March 2012 and November 2015, the study included all HIV‐controllers (16 elite‐controllers, 1 long‐term‐non‐progressor), 11 HIV‐treatment and 16 non‐HIV. Prevalence of NRD at baseline was 88.2% (15/17, 95% CI: 65.7%–96.7%), 90.9% (10/11, 95% CI: 62.3%–98.4%) and 56.3% (9/16, 95% CI: 33.2%–76.9%), respectively. Cumulative incidence at 3 years was 50% (1/2), 100% (1/1) and 33.3% (2/6), respectively. None of the participants manifested ocular clinical symptoms. Three years later, prevalence of NRD was 92.3% (12/13, 95% CI: 66.7%–98.6%), 75% (6/8, 95% CI: 40.9%–92.9%) and 50.0% (7/14, 95% CI: 26.8%–73.2%), respectively. Contrast sensitivity and structural parameters were globally the most affected among PLWH. Quality of life (total score) [median (interquartile range)] at baseline and 3 years was 82 (71–89) and 74 (63.5–79.25) in HIV‐controllers and 80 (73–88) and 88 (83–92) in HIV‐treatment. Conclusions: HIV‐controllers and those individuals on ART presented a higher percentage of NRD than non‐HIV. Our results suggest that NRD could be a biomarker of ocular aging among PLWH. Background/Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify the most reliable ocular exam and establish a threshold for deciding whether to perform neuroimaging in order to screen for diverse diseases other than normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). A retrospective, observational, comparative study was used. Methods: In total, 106 individuals with atypical features of NTG who underwent glaucoma assessments and contrast-enhanced MRI of the brain or orbit were included. The criteria for atypical NTG included the following: (1) unilateral normal-tension glaucoma, (2) visual field (VF) damage inconsistent with optic disc appearance, (3) fast VF progression, (4) worsening of visual acuity, (5) optic disc pallor, (6) scotoma restricted by a vertical line, and (7) central scotoma. Glaucoma evaluations included measurements of visual acuity, intraocular pressure, central corneal thickness, axial length, cup–disc ratio, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, ganglion cell–inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness, mean deviation (MD), and visual field index (VFI). Statistical analyses involved independent t-tests, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and area under the curve (AUC) in order to differentiate neuro-ophthalmological conditions from NTG, compare the diagnostic power of each factor, and determine the cut-off value. Results: Relatively fewer diagnoses of non-glaucomatous diseases were associated with unilateral NTG, the worsening of VA, and central scotoma. Factors such as rapid visual field progression, optic disc pallor, and scotoma restricted by a vertical line had a relatively higher diagnostic rate of non-glaucomatous diseases. There were significant differences in average RNFL and GCIPL thicknesses at the nasal quadrant between NTG and NTG-mimicking conditions. Only the GCIPL thickness at the nasal quadrant had reliable power for discriminating between neuro-ophthalmological disease and NTG. For the GCIPL thickness at the nasal quadrant, the AUC was 0.659, and the cut-off value was 65.75. Conclusions: When deciding whether to proceed with imaging, such as carrying out an MRI test, for NTG patients with atypical NTG characteristics, it would be advisable to consider the nasal sector cut-off value of GCIPL thickness. Background/Objectives: This study aims to explore the potential relationship between unilateral or asymmetric glaucoma and ipsilateral hearing impairment. Methods: In this retrospective study, visual and hearing functions were assessed in patients with unilateral or asymmetric glaucoma. Correlations between retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, visual field mean deviation (MD) values, and pure tone audiometry (PTA) measurements across various frequencies were analyzed to explore potential associations between visual and ipsilateral hearing functions. Differences in PTA values between ears ipsilateral to the more affected glaucomatous eyes and the contralateral ears were studied for statistical significance. Results: Twenty-six patients with unilateral or asymmetric glaucoma were included in the study. Significant differences in hearing thresholds between the ears corresponding to the more severely glaucomatous eyes and the contralateral ears were found at 0.7, 1, 1.5, and 3 kHz (p < 0.05). Additionally, a statistically significant difference was observed in the speech frequencies (0.5, 0.7, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, and 4 kHz) between ears corresponding to glaucomatous or more affected glaucomatous eyes and the contralateral ears (p = 0.016). Furthermore, a moderately positive correlation was found between differences in MD and PTA values at 0.125 kHz (r = 0.50; p = 0.01). Conclusions: This study highlights a potential association between unilateral or asymmetric glaucoma and ipsilateral hearing impairment, particularly at speech-relevant frequencies. These findings underscore the importance of integrated sensory assessment in the management of glaucoma patients, suggesting that early detection and intervention for concurrent hearing loss could enhance overall quality of life. Human interaction recognition (HIR) between two people in videos is a critical field in computer vision and pattern recognition, aimed at identifying and understanding human interaction and actions for applications such as healthcare, surveillance, and human–computer interaction. Despite its significance, video-based HIR faces challenges in achieving satisfactory performance due to the complexity of human actions, variations in motion, different viewpoints, and environmental factors. In the study, we proposed a two-stream deep learning-based HIR system to address these challenges and improve the accuracy and reliability of HIR systems. In the process, two streams extract hierarchical features based on the skeleton and RGB information, respectively. In the first stream, we utilised YOLOv8-Pose for human pose extraction, then extracted features with three stacked LSM modules and enhanced them with a dense layer that is considered the final feature of the first stream. In the second stream, we utilised SAM on the input videos, and after filtering the Segment Anything Model (SAM) feature, we employed integrated LSTM and GRU to extract the long-range dependency feature and then enhanced them with a dense layer that was considered the final feature for the second stream module. Here, SAM was utilised for segmented mesh generation, and ImageNet was used for feature extraction from images or meshes, focusing on extracting relevant features from sequential image data. Moreover, we newly created a custom filter function to enhance computational efficiency and eliminate irrelevant keypoints and mesh components from the dataset. We concatenated the two stream features and produced the final feature that fed into the classification module. The extensive experiment with the two benchmark datasets of the proposed model achieved 96.56% and 96.16% accuracy, respectively. It's been repeatedly shown that pictures of graspable objects can facilitate visual processing, even in the absence of reach-to-grasp actions, an effect often attributed to the concept of affordances. A classic demonstration of this is the handle compatibility effect, characterised by faster reaction times when the orientation of a graspable object's handle is compatible with the hand used to respond, even when the handle orientation is task-irrelevant. Nevertheless, it is debated whether the speeded reaction times are a result of affordances or spatial compatibility. First, we investigated whether we could replicate the handle compatibility effect while controlling for spatial compatibility. Participants (N = 68) responded with left or right-handed keypresses to whether the object was upright or inverted and, in separate blocks, whether the object was red or green. We failed to replicate the handle compatibility effect, with no significant difference between compatible and incompatible conditions, in both tasks. Second, we investigated whether there is a lower visual field (VF) advantage for the handle compatibility effect in line with what has been found for hand actions. A further 68 participants responded to object orientation presented either in the upper or lower VF. A significant handle compatibility effect was observed in the lower VF, but not the upper VF. This suggests that there is a lower VF advantage for affordances, possibly as the lower VF is where our actions most frequently occur. Purpose: To utilise ganglion cell‐inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) measurements acquired using widefield optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans spanning 55° × 45° to explore the link between co‐localised structural parameters and clinical visual field (VF) data. Methods: Widefield OCT scans acquired from 311 healthy, 268 glaucoma suspect and 269 glaucoma eyes were segmented to generate GCIPL thickness measurements. Estimated ganglion cell (GC) counts, calculated from GCIPL measurements, were plotted against 24‐2 SITA Faster visual field (VF) thresholds, and regression models were computed with data categorised by diagnosis and VF status. Classification of locations as VF defective or non‐defective using GCIPL parameters computed across eccentricity‐ and hemifield‐dependent clusters was assessed by analysing areas under receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCCs). Sensitivities and specificities were calculated per diagnostic category. Results: Segmented linear regression models between GC counts and VF thresholds demonstrated higher variability in VF defective locations relative to non‐defective locations (mean absolute error 6.10–9.93 dB and 1.43–1.91 dB, respectively). AUROCCs from cluster‐wide GCIPL parameters were similar across methods centrally (p = 0.06–0.84) but significantly greater peripherally, especially when considering classification of more central locations (p < 0.0001). Across diagnoses, cluster‐wide GCIPL parameters demonstrated variable sensitivities and specificities (0.36–0.93 and 0.65–0.98, respectively), with the highest specificities observed across healthy eyes (0.73–0.98). Conclusions: Quantitative prediction of VF thresholds from widefield OCT is affected by high variability at VF defective locations. Prediction of VF status based on cluster‐wide GCIPL parameters from widefield OCT could become useful to aid clinical decision‐making in appropriately targeting VF assessments. Purpose: Visual impairment (VI) is still underdiagnosed in patients with acquired brain injury despite the large impact on daily life activities and rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to explore the current practice of identification of VI, management plans, referrals, and experienced barriers in Norwegian hospital settings. Materials and Methods: An online survey was sent out to leaders (n = 62) in hospitals treating patients with acquired brain injury. Data from 22 items covering routines, interdisciplinary collaboration, assessment tools, protocols, barriers, referral practice, and background information were collected. Results: Respondents (n = 108) comprised various professions from mainly acute or subacute settings. Visual field deficits, oculomotor dysfunction, and neglect were most commonly but not routinely assessed (53%–57%). Besides medical examination, patient interviews, and observations rather than standardized tests or questionnaires (82% vs.25%) were used. Few workplaces seemed to have interdisciplinary vision teams (13%). Barriers were patient characteristics such as cognitive and language impairment and limited resources. Below half (45%) felt competent in assessing VI or had attended courses on the topic (44%). Conclusions: The study highlights the need to implement standardized assessment, improve interdisciplinary collaboration, and facilitate training courses to enable hospital staff to assess VI after brain injury. Cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy (CALD) can cause visual impairment, but early symptoms are often missed or misdiagnosed. The framework of cerebral visual impairment (CVI) distinguishes deficits in sensory detection ("lower order") from those of perception and interpretation ("higher order"). This study describes visual deficits in patients with CALD and higher order visual function assessed with a virtual reality (VR) interface combined with eye tracking. A retrospective medical record review assessed the prevalence of visual deficits in patients with CALD, as well as lesion burden on brain MRI using the Loes MRI severity score. A VR-based task measured visual spatial processing performance in participants with CALD and controls. Out of 89 CALD patients, 69 % had at least one sign or symptom of visual impairment. Lower order deficits were seen in 56 % of patients, and higher order deficits were seen in 59 % of patients who underwent neuropsychological testing. Even in early stage disease (Loes MRI severity score ≤ 3), visual impairment was present in more than half of patients (58 %). On prospective VR-based assessment, the CALD group (n = 30) had impaired visual search performance (lower success rate and longer reaction time) compared with controls (n = 38). In both groups, there was a trend of worsening performance with increasing task difficulty. Higher order visual deficits, not just impairment of visual acuity, visual fields, or oculomotor function, are common in all stages of CALD. Beyond neuropsychological testing, VR-based functional testing allows for quantitative assessment of higher order visual perceptual deficits that are relevant to everyday tasks and may serve as an important marker of neurological decline. Introduction: The aim of this prospective and comparative study was to investigate the association of perimetry parameters on visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) eyes with diffractive extended depth-of-focus (EDoF) and monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs). Methods: In cataract eyes with medicinally controlled POAG with no defects in the central visual field and mean deviation (MD) values of − 10 dB or better, EDoF and monofocal IOLs with the same platform except for echelette optics for EDoF were implanted in 22 and 24 eyes, respectively. Corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), contrast sensitivity at 3 to 18 cycles per degree (cpd), and automated perimetry using 30-2 and 10-2 Swedish Interactive Threshold Algorithm programs were examined 3 months postoperatively. The influences of perimetry parameters including MD, foveal sensitivity (FS), and the means of the central four points (central MD and central FS) on CDVA and contrast sensitivity were evaluated using linear and multiple regression analyses. Results: In POAG eyes with EDoF IOLs, contrast sensitivities at 12 and 18 cpd were associated with 30-2 and 10-2 perimetry parameters. In POAG eyes with monofocal IOLs, associations of 30-2 parameters were found in CDVA and 3-cpd contrast sensitivity. Conclusions: The visual function of POAG eyes with EDoF IOLs was associated with perimetry parameters in high spatial frequency contrast sensitivity, which was different from that of POAG eyes with monofocal IOL. Endogenous shifts of spatial attention toward an upcoming stimulus are associated with improvements in behavioral responses to the stimulus, preparatory retinotopic shifts in alpha power, and changes in ERPs. Although attentional modulation of several early sensory ERPs is well established, there is still debate about under what circumstances attention affects the earliest cortical visual evoked response—the C1 ERP component—which is putatively generated from afferent input into primary visual cortex. Moreover, the effects of spatial attention on the recently discovered ERP signature of evidence accumulation—the central parietal positivity (CPP)—have not been fully characterized. The present study assessed the effect of spatial attention on the C1 and CPP components through a spatially cued contrast discrimination task using stimuli that were specifically designed to produce large-amplitude C1 responses and that varied in sensory evidence strength to characterize the CPP. Participants responded according to which of two checkerboard stimuli had greater contrast following an 80% valid cue toward the upper or lower visual field. Prestimulus alpha power changed topographically based on the cue, suggesting participants shifted attention to prepare for the upcoming stimuli. Despite these attentional shifts in alpha power and the fact that the stimuli reliably elicited C1 responses several times greater than many prior studies, there was no evidence of an attention effect on the C1. The CPP, however, showed a clear increase in build-up rate on valid trials. Our findings suggest that endogenous attention may not affect the early C1 ERP component but may improve behavior at a decision stage, as reflected in brain signals related to evidence accumulation (the CPP). Purpose: To determine vision‐related quality of life (VR‐QoL) and functional and structural parameters associated with VR‐QoL in patients with glaucoma before and 12 months after trabeculectomy. Methods: Fifty‐eight patients undergoing trabeculectomy were included. Participants completed the 25‐item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (VFQ‐25) prior to and 12 months after trabeculectomy. Functional (visual acuity and visual fields) and structural (ganglion cell layer volume) parameters were evaluated for their association with VR‐QoL using multiple linear regression of VFQ‐25 subscale scores. Intraocular pressure and the number of glaucoma medications were also included in the analyses. Results: The VFQ‐25 composite score did not change after trabeculectomy (before: 74.9; 12 months: 74.0; p = 0.512). The subscale mental health had a significantly higher score 12 months after trabeculectomy (before: 65.6; 12 months: 71.4; p = 0.017). The VFQ‐25 scores for general health (before: 68.5; 12 months: 62.5; p = 0.009) and role difficulties (before: 78.9; 12 months: 53.7; p < 0.001) were significantly lower 12 months after trabeculectomy. No functional or structural parameters were associated with VFQ‐25 composite score. Conclusion: Overall, VR‐QoL in glaucoma patients was similar before and after trabeculectomy, reflecting the procedure's stabilizing effect on both objective and subjective visual function. The absence of correlations between VR‐QoL and clinical parameters emphasizes the multifaceted nature of VR‐QoL and highlights the limitations of depending solely on objective clinical metrics to evaluate patients' subjective experiences. Using both objective measures and VR‐QoL, clinicians can better understand the challenges patients face due to glaucoma and trabeculectomy, potentially leading to better solutions. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of the standing center of gravity sway by providing visual stimulus information as if the subjects were walking in virtual reality (VR) and by monitoring conditions with different corridor widths. We included 25 healthy young individuals in our study. The center of gravity sway was measured during open- and closed-eye static standing using images of walking in corridors of different widths (780 and 1600 mm) presented on a VR and personal computer monitor (Monitor). The parameters measured for the center of gravity sway were swing path length (SPL), height of excursion (HoE), and width of excursion (WoE). The results showed that the SPL and HoE values were significantly greater in the VR group than those in the Monitor group. The greater center of gravity sway in the VR compared with the Monitor group can be attributed to the ability of the head-mounted VR display to cover the entire field of vision and its head-tracking function. There was no change in the center of gravity sway with respect to the corridor width, which may be because the width of the corridor alone did not provide sufficient visual stimulation to affect physical function. The science of diabetes care has progressed to provide a better understanding of the oxidative and inflammatory lesions and pathophysiology of the neurovascular unit within the retina (and brain) that occur early in diabetes, even prediabetes. Screening for retinal structural abnormalities, has traditionally been performed by fundus examination or color fundus photography; however, these imaging techniques detect the disease only when there are sufficient lesions, predominantly hemorrhagic, that are recognized to occur late in the disease process after significant neuronal apoptosis and atrophy, as well as microvascular occlusion with alterations in vision. Thus, interventions have been primarily oriented toward the later-detected stages, and clinical trials, while demonstrating a slowing of the disease progression, demonstrate minimal visual improvement and modest reduction in the continued loss over prolonged periods. Similarly, vision measurement utilizing charts detects only problems of visual function late, as the process begins most often parafoveally with increasing number and progressive expansion, including into the fovea. While visual acuity has long been used to define endpoints of visual function for such trials, current methods reviewed herein are found to be imprecise. We review improved methods of testing visual function and newer imaging techniques with the recommendation that these must be utilized to discover and evaluate the injury earlier in the disease process, even in the prediabetic state. This would allow earlier therapy with ocular as well as systemic pharmacologic treatments that lower the and neuro-inflammatory processes within eye and brain. This also may include newer, micropulsed laser therapy that, if applied during the earlier cascade, should result in improved and often normalized retinal function without the adverse treatment effects of standard photocoagulation therapy. High dynamic range imaging is an important field in computer vision. Compared with general low dynamic range (LDR) images, high dynamic range (HDR) images represent a larger luminance range, making the images closer to the real scene. In this paper, we propose an approach for HDR image reconstruction from a single LDR image based on histogram learning. First, the dynamic range of an LDR image is expanded to an extended dynamic range (EDR) image. Then, histogram learning is established to predict the intensity distribution of an HDR image of the EDR image. Next, we use histogram matching to reallocate pixel intensities. The final HDR image is generated through regional adjustment using reinforcement learning. By decomposing low-frequency and high-frequency information, the proposed network can predict the lost high-frequency details while expanding the intensity ranges. We conduct the experiments based on HDR-Real and HDR-EYE datasets. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of the attentional alerting network in spatial perceptual processing in youth athletes under different emotional states. Two hundred and fifty participants were recruited to assess alerting efficiency using the Attention Network Test and were divided into high and low alerting efficiency groups based on the front and back 27% of the alerting scores as a dividing metric. Subsequently, participants completed the Spatial Perception Response Task under different emotionally induced conditions. Results showed a correlation between alerting efficiency and spatial perception, the higher the alerting efficiency, the faster and more accurate the spatial perception response. Emotion and spatial location interacted significantly (p < 0.05), and subjects in the angry emotional state had faster spatial responses to the lower left visual field than those in the happy emotional state. Moreover, an interaction was found for location accuracy (p < 0.05). The high alerting efficiency group showed lower accuracy in the anger state than in the happy state. These findings suggest that alerting efficiency can be used as an objective indicator for assessing the spatial perceptual ability of youth athletes, which provides empirical evidence for mental selection and perceptual training of youth athletes. Recent findings on chimpanzee infants' gestural development show that they use some gesture types flexibly and adjust them depending on their interaction partner and social context, suggesting that gestural communication is partly learnt and partly genetically determined. However, how gesture types are shaped by social and demographic factors remains unclear. We addressed this question by focusing on gesture type morphology and conducted a fined-grained analysis of gestural form during intraspecific social-play interactions in two captive groups of Western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). We focused on the most frequent gesture types (beat chest, slap body, slap ground and touch body) produced by subadults (infants, juveniles and adolescents). We considered twelve morphological gesture characteristics (e.g., horizontal and vertical hand trajectories, fingers flexion and spread). Our multifactorial investigation shows that morphological characteristics of distinct gesture types can be shaped by social factors, namely signaller's sociodemographic characteristics (group and kinship), signaller's behavioural characteristics (body posture) and context-related characteristics (recipient's sex, attentional state and position in the signaller's visual field). We nurtured the lively debate concerning gesture origins by revealing the existence of "accents" in non-verbal communication and the highly variable adjustment of gestural form to different conspecifics and interactional characteristics, which supports the revised social negotiation hypothesis. Introduction: Pituitary adenomas are benign tumours that can lead to visual loss through compression of the optic chiasm. Patients with pituitary adenomas often present with visual field defects (commonly bitemporal hemianopia), but some may be asymptomatic. In such cases, abnormalities may only be detected through visual field testing or optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL), which may provide a more sensitive method for detecting such abnormalities. Case Presentation: A 72-year-old man was incidentally found to have binasal OCT-GCIPL thinning during a routine eye examination. Visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. Pupils were equal and reactive without a relative afferent pupillary defect. His Humphrey 24-2 SITA-Fast visual field test results were normal. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a nonenhancing (cystic) sellar/suprasellar mass measuring 1.7 cm craniocaudal by 2.1 cm anteroposteriorly, without associated optic chiasm compression. The lesion was suspected to be either a cystic pituitary adenoma or a Rathke’s cleft cyst. Follow-up examination 1 year later showed all findings remained stable, including an unchanged visual acuity, visual fields, OCT-GCIPL, and MRI. Conclusion: The binasal thinning observed on OCT-GCIPL in this case, despite the absence of chiasmal compression on MRI, is suggestive of previous compression of the optic chiasm. This case highlights the potential for spontaneous regression of pituitary adenomas and underscores the importance of OCT-GCIPL as a vital tool for detecting optic chiasmal damage. The Rapid Campimetry (RC), a kinetic visual field test proved to reliably detect visual field defects within the central 10° degrees, the most crucial part for visual acuity and quality of life, affected even at very early stages of glaucoma, within a short measurement epoch, ~ 1 min. This study aims to further investigate RC correspondence with standard tests in glaucoma, namely standard automated perimetry (SAP) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) within 10° of visual field (VF). For this purpose, we included 41 participants, [21 glaucoma (GLA, mean age: 65.9 ± 12.4; 12 preperimetric eyes and 11 with VF defects) and 20 healthy controls (HC; mean age: 65.0 ± 10.3); 20 eyes]. At first, we compared the rate of detection/exclusion of VF defects in RC vs. SAP. Then, for those with VF defects (11 eyes), we investigated the 68-pointwise correspondence of 10 − 2 layout of RC and SAP. For functional and structural (SF) correspondence, pointwise correspondence of RC, SAP vs. OCTmacula [ macular ganglion cell thickness (GCL)] was also performed. Further, we compared sector-based correspondence of RC, SAP vs. OCTmacula accounting for GCL displacement at the fovea as well as sector-based correspondence with OCTdisc [peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (pRNFL)]. Agreement estimates were reported along with Cohen Kappa () statistic. For overall performance, RC and SAP showed 100% agreement () for the exclusion of VF defects (HC and preperimetric GLA) and for detection of VF defects [11 eyes of 9 GLA, ( ]. Further, RC outperformed SAP in detection of arcuate scotomas, 7 vs. 5, respectively. Pointwise correspondence of VF defects (11 eyes), RC-SAP agreement reached 90% accuracy (). We aim to provide an update on the epidemiology of visual impairment among Western Australian children using registry data analysis, and to highlight the challenges of registry data collection.This is a retrospective study of visual impairment and blindness registrations of children aged 0–16 years in Western Australia from 1996 to 2015. Blindness was defined as visual acuity ≤6/60 in the better‐seeing eye or binocular visual field ≤20° diameter, with all other certifications labelled as visual impairment. Certificates were assessed for primary causes of vision loss by age strata and sex. Registration rate trends were analysed across three discrete registration periods.Of 11 800 certificates issued between 1996 and 2015, 728 certificates (6.2%) were issued to 710 children. Five hundred and twenty‐nine (74.5%) certificates were issued for visual impairment and 181 (25.5%) for blindness. The leading cause of certification was inherited retinal disease (73, 10.3%), followed by cortical visual impairment (57, 8.0%) and albinism (56, 7.9%). The annual registration rate of visual impairment increased from 0.5 to 9.8 per 100 000 person‐years across the study period, whereas blindness rates fell from 2.7 to 1.3.Overall registration rates of paediatric visual impairment in Western Australia are increasing, but these trends should be interpreted with caution given the known limitations of registry data. Analyzing such information helps them to perform operations like production monitoring, market forecasting, and civil society demands with high accuracy. Besides these entities, individuals/customers also choose from other users' feedback. The most basic processing that takes place in the field of sentiment analysis is to classify a text into a positive or negative class. Yet, given to wide usage of image-based social media, there have been limited attempts to deduce emotions from images or videos. In this paper, a bimodal sentiment analysis is presented by combining visual and textual information. In the proposed method, the image is sentimentally captioned by an encoder-decoder network, first. To achieve this goal, a sentiment image captioning method has been used to generate positive, negative, or neutral captions for each input image. Then, the generated captions and the user's published text are sent to the relation network and then the final sentiment label is predicted. In this one-shot learning approach, only one image is used to predict a sentiment, without any training. Results show the proposed method can compete with the State-of-the-Art methods in the field of visual sentiment analysis. In this respect, the proposed method achieves 70% accuracy on TWITTER and 75% accuracy on MVSA datasets, which can be regarded as a champion considering that this method is a one-shot approach. Objective Methods Results Interpretation This study aimed to investigate the nature of subclinical Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS). We sought to develop a means of recruiting naïve participants with subclinical VSS symptoms to participate in research; and to understand whether subclinical VSS symptoms are stable across time. VSS is a recently characterised neurological condition, whose primary symptom is visual snow (dynamic noise in the visual field). There is evidence that VSS may be common in the general population and that it is unnoticed by many who experience it. To fully characterise VSS, it is important to understand whether (and how) subclinical VSS progresses to a clinical form.Here, we present two related studies: Study 1 develops and validates the Melbourne Visual Snow Questionnaire (MVSQ), a tool for screening the general population for VSS symptoms; and Study 2 investigates the stability of subclinical VSS. We developed the MVSQ based on the results of other recent work investigating undiagnosed cases of VSS, and a validated questionnaire designed to identify people with tinnitus for research participation. We then tested the MVSQ in a population with clinical VSS, including assessing face validity (i.e., the extent to which people with clinical VSS believed the questionnaire accurately captured their symptoms). In Study 2, we deployed the MVSQ in a naïve sample of 155 participants, who completed the MVSQ twice, 6 weeks apart.The results of Study 1 indicated that the MVSQ was a viable method of recruiting people who experience VSS symptoms for research participation. It was deemed to have appropriate face validity and to pose little burden to those who completed it. In Study 2, VSS symptoms changed substantially across a 6‐week period. Cohen's weighted kappa for diagnosis was 0.56, 95% CI [0.43, 0.69]. However, the impact of perceptual experiences was low and did not change over time, rank ICC = 0.71, 95% CI [0.59, 0.82].The MVSQ is appropriate for assessing perceptual experiences in the general population. Coordinating with others is part of our everyday experience. Previous studies using sensorimotor coordination games suggest that human dyads develop coordination strategies that can be interpreted as Nash equilibria. However, if the players are uncertain about what their partner is doing, they develop coordination strategies which are robust to the actual partner's actions. This has suggested that humans select their actions based on an explicit prediction of what the partner will be doing—a partner model—which is probabilistic by nature. However, the mechanisms underlying the development of a joint coordination over repeated trials remain unknown. Very much like sensorimotor adaptation of individuals to external perturbations (eg force fields or visual rotations), dynamical models may help to understand how joint coordination develops over repeated trials. Here we present a general computational model—based on game theory and Bayesian estimation—designed to understand the mechanisms underlying the development of a joint coordination over repeated trials. Joint tasks are modeled as quadratic games, where each participant's task is expressed as a quadratic cost function. Each participant predicts their partner's next move (partner model) by optimally combining predictions and sensory observations, and selects their actions through a stochastic optimization of its expected cost, given the partner model. The model parameters include perceptual uncertainty (sensory noise), partner representation (retention rate and internale noise), uncertainty in action selection and its rate of decay (which can be interpreted as the action's learning rate). The model can be used in two ways: (i) to simulate interactive behaviors, thus helping to make specific predictions in the context of a given joint action scenario; and (ii) to analyze the action time series in actual experiments, thus providing quantitative metrics that describe individual behaviors during an actual joint action. We demonstrate the model in a variety of joint action scenarios. In a sensorimotor version of the Stag Hunt game, the model predicts that different representations of the partner lead to different Nash equilibria. In a joint two via-point (2-VP) reaching task, in which the actions consist of complex trajectories, the model captures well the observed temporal evolution of performance. For this task we also estimated the model parameters from experimental observations, which provided a comprehensive characterization of individual dyad participants. Computational models of joint action may help identifying the factors preventing or facilitating the development of coordination. They can be used in clinical settings, to interpret the observed behaviors in individuals with impaired interaction capabilities. They may also provide a theoretical basis to devise artificial agents that establish forms of coordination that facilitate neuromotor recovery. Using a combination of experiments and computational models we show that through multiple repetitions of the same joint task we select the action which represents the 'best response' to what we believe our opponent will do. Such a belief about our partner (partner model) is developed gradually, by optimally combining prior assumptions (how repeatable or how erratic our opponent behaves) with sensory information about our opponent's past actions. Rooted in game theory and Bayesian estimation, the model accounts for the development of the mutual 'trust' among partners which is essential for establishing a mutually advantageous collaboration, and explains how we combine decisions and movements in complex coordination scenarios. The model can be used as a generative tool, to simulate the development of coordination in a specific joint action scenario, and as an analytic tool to characterize the individual traits or defects in the ability to establish collaborations. With the continuous advancement of deep learning, research in scene text detection has evolved significantly. However, complex backgrounds and various text forms complicate the task of detecting text from images. CNN is a deep learning algorithm that automatically extracts features through convolution operation. In the task of scene text detection, it can capture local text features in images, but it lacks global attributes. In recent years, inspired by the application of transformers in the field of computer vision, it can capture the global information of images and describe them intuitively. Therefore, this paper proposes scene text detection based on dual perspective CNN-transformer. The channel enhanced self-attention module (CESAM) and spatial enhanced self-attention module (SESAM) proposed in this paper are integrated into the traditional ResNet backbone network. This integration effectively facilitates the learning of global contextual information and positional relationships of text, thereby alleviating the challenge of detecting small target text. Furthermore, this paper introduces a feature decoder designed to refine the effective text information within the feature map and enhance the perception of detailed information. Experiments show that the method proposed in this paper significantly improves the robustness of the model for different types of text detection. Compared to the baseline, it achieves performance improvements of 2.51% (83.81 vs. 81.3) on the Total-Text dataset, 1.87% (86.07 vs. 84.2) on the ICDAR 2015 dataset, and 3.63% (86.72 vs. 83.09) on the MSRA-TD500 dataset, while also demonstrating better visual effects. Purpose Methods Results Conclusion To determine whether we could establish evidence‐based pass/fail criteria for perimetry in the context of the European visual field standards for driving.This two‐centre, cross‐sectional study included participants with binocular visual field loss that had led to revocation of a group‐1 driving licence. The participants underwent cognitive and binocular visual testing, including the European Driving Test (EDT), a perimetry algorithm that adheres to the European visual field standards. We used a high‐fidelity driving simulator to compare the driving ability of these participants with healthy controls. Two driving instructors classified each driving test as passed or failed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and area under the curve (AUC) determined the ability of perimetry to discriminate between passed and failed driving tests.The study included 70 participants with visual field loss and 37 controls. A non‐significantly higher proportion of controls passed the driving test (75% vs. 63%; p = 0.22). In ROC analysis, contrast sensitivity performed best (AUC of 0.73), followed by NEI VFQ‐25 (AUC of 0.64). Peripheral visual field (AUC of 0.56) and central visual field (AUC of 0.47) performed weaker. Combining the central and peripheral visual field, and their interaction, increased AUC to 0.63.Perimetry was a poor predictor of simulator‐based driving test result, and we could not establish appropriate pass/fail criteria for the European visual field standards. High‐precision relative position and attitude measurement technology has a wide range of applications in aerospace and industrial production. Currently, the commonly used method for measurement is based on visual cooperative signs. However, its accuracy significantly decreases as the distance increases. Therefore, a relative positioning system is designed based on light field spatial coding and visual recognition. The projector emits spatially encoded structured light within the coverage of the light field, while the receiving end captures, identifies, measures the code, and calculates its pose in the light field coordinate system. Compared with the traditional measurement method, the measurement accuracy of this system does not decrease greatly with the increase in distance, the measurement distance can be adjusted in real‐time and does not depend on an external light source. By changing the projection pattern with different resolutions without changing hardware systems, it can adjust effective measurement distance accordingly. Smartphones are intricately connected to the modern society. The two widely used mobile phone operating systems, iOS and Android, profoundly affect the lives of millions of people. Android presently holds a market share of close to 71% among these two. As a result, if personal information is not securely protected, it is at tremendous risk. On the other hand, mobile malware has seen a year-on-year increase of more than 42% globally in 2022 mid-year. Any group of human professionals would have a very tough time detecting and removing all of this malware. For this reason, deep learning in particular has been used recently to overcome this problem. Deep learning models, however, were primarily created for picture analysis. Despite the fact that these models have shown promising findings in the field of vision, it has been challenging to fully comprehend what the characteristics recovered by deep learning models are in the area of malware. Furthermore, the actual potential of deep learning for malware analysis has not yet been fully realized due to the translation invariance trait of well-known models based on CNN. In this paper, we present ViTDroid, a novel model based on vision transformers for the deep learning-based analysis of opcode sequences of Android malware samples from large real-world datasets. We have been able to achieve a false positive rate of 0.0019 as compared to the previous best of 0.0021. However, this incremental improvement is not the major contribution of our work. Our model aims to make explainable predictions, i.e., it not only performs the classification of malware with high accuracy, but it also provides insights into the reasons for this classification. The model is able to pinpoint the malicious behavior-causing instructions in the malware samples.
