Current soil- and land degradation seriously challenge our societies; it contributes to climate change, loss of biodiversity and loss of agricultural productions. Yet, soils are also seen as a major part of the solution, if maintained or restored to provide ecosystem services. Climate-smart sustainable management of soils can provide options for soil health maintenance and restoration. In the European Union, the resource management and sustainability challenge are addressed in the Green Deal that, among other goals, aspires towards a healthy climate-resilient agricultural sector that will produce sufficient products without damaging ecosystems and contribute to better biodiversity and mitigate climate change. The European Joint Programme (EJP) SOIL was set up to contribute to these goals by developing knowledge, tools and an integrated research community to foster climate-smart sustainable agricultural soil management that provides a diversity of ecosystem service, such as adapting to and mitigating climate change, allowing sustainable food production, and sustaining soil biodiversity. This paper provides an overview of the potential of climate-smart sustainable soil management research to the targets of the Green Deal that are related to soils most directly. The EJP SOIL EU-wide consultation (interviews and questionnaires) and literature analysis (national and international reports and papers) done in the first year (2020–2021) generated a wealth of data. This data showed that there are specific manners to do research that are essential for it to be effective and efficient and that can actively contribute to the Green Deal targets. We concluded that research needs to be: (i) interdisciplinary, (ii) long-term, (iii) multi-scaled, from plot to landscape, (iv) evaluating trade-offs of selected management options for ecosystem services and (v) co-constructed with key stakeholders. Food systems—encompassing food production, transportation, processing and consumption, including food losses and waste—are currently not delivering what is expected or needed to ensure their full contribution to societal well-being and ecological sustainability. In this paper, we hypothesize that nature-based solutions (NBS; solutions that are inspired by, supported by, or copied from nature) can overcome system challenges related to the functioning of the biosphere, society, or economy (including governance arrangements), and support a transition to sustainable climate-resilient food systems. We develop a conceptual framework to assess NBS contributions to such transitions. Three types of NBS are evaluated: intrinsic NBS which make use of existing ecosystems; hybrid NBS which manage and adapt ecosystems; and inspired NBS which consist of newly constructed ecosystems. We show that inspired NBS in particular will increase opportunities to achieve sustainable development in food systems. NBS can facilitate the much-needed transition to a different way of using our natural resources to reach the SDGs by 2030. We identify the knowledge gaps that impede the development of NBS to support a transition towards sustainable, climate-resilient food systems.

In het programma EJP SOIL werkt Wageningen University & Research (WUR) met andere Europese instellingen samen om hier snel grote stappen te kunnen zetten. Uit de inventarisaties in het eerste jaar van het programma blijken we het in Nederland al goed te doen.

Circularity is a necessity for the future of our society but individual households often find it difficult to contribute to this transition. This paper presents possible future visions of circular (and climate-neutral) households, inside and outside the house, regarding their contributions to the circular society, and taking into account food, energy, waste, household devices, and recreation. We combined expert interviews and a literature review to (1) explore imaginable futures for circular households, and (2) make a qualitative evaluation of the inside- and outside-house influences of households on a climate-neutral and circular society. Interviewees were selected to represent different scientific backgrounds. The four household types were organized according to more local or global, and collective or individual, levels: (1) the Househood (centering around neighborhoods); (2) the HouseNet (connecting households); (3) the Sharing Household (sharing goods between households); and (4) the Designing Household (input from circular-by-design products). The analysis shows that households can become more circular by connecting developments in social, ecological, and technological systems, such as those in price dynamics, policies, or land-use design. However, barriers and limitations need attention, including: (1) public awareness and willingness to change; (2) economic models; (3) waste; and (4) social justice.

De Europese landbouw moet veranderen, zodat ze veerkrachtig is, bijdraagt aan de klimaat doelstellingen, voldoende voedsel produceert en actief bijdraagt aan het herstel van biodiversiteit. De bodem vormt de basis voor deze verandering. Duurzaam, klimaat-slim bodembeheer is het fundament van alle toekomstige Europese landbouwsystemen, want de bodem kan bijdragen aan klimaat oplossingen. Er is onvoldoende tijd voor ieder land om alleen naar haar eigen oplossingen te zoeken. We moeten samenwerken en van elkaar leren. Dat gebeurt in EJP SOIL.

In 2019 is de indicatorset Bodemindicatoren voor Landbouwgronden in Nederland (BLN), versie 1.0 ontwikkeld. De indicatorset moet bijdragen aan een duurzaam beheer van alle landbouwgronden in 2030. Dit rapport is een eerste evaluatie van de BLN, versie 1.0 en geeft een actualisatie, resulterend in BLN, versie 1.1 op de korte termijn waarin een aantal kleinere vernieuwingen voorgesteld worden en een ontwikkelpad voor een BLN, versie 2.0 voor de langere termijn. De BLN, versie 2.0 moet leiden tot een verbeterde systematiek om relatief goedkoop en eenvoudig de bodemkwaliteit integraal vast te stellen van landbouwbodems in Nederland zowel op perceelsniveau als nationaal niveau.

Een duurzaam Nederland in 2030, om dit doel te bereiken zijn verregaande veranderingen - transities - nodig. Al deze transities zijn verbonden met de bodem. De transitie naar een circulaire biobased economy of bio-economie verbindt daarom transities op het gebied van klimaatbeleid, energie, bouw, stedelijke ontwikkeling en landbouw. De bodem vormt immers de basis van een gezond ecosysteem, dat diensten verschaft voor een circulaire bio-economie.

In de kamerbrief van 25 april 2019 schrijft de minister van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit (LNV) dat ze beoogt dat alle landbouwbodems in Nederland in 2030 duurzaam worden beheerd. Om dat te kunnen realiseren is het nodig vast te stellen wat duurzaam beheer is en hoe dit kan worden gemeten.

This dataset contains data from two different studies on aeolian sediment transport. The first study was conducted in Dori, Burkina Faso, the second at Ameland, the Netherlands. The first dataset contains data from a degraded (deg), dune and valley site for 11 events. The second dataset contains data of 18 catchers for 6 different events.

The Northern Uplands of Vietnam form one of the largest ecological regions in the country, characterized by complex biophysical conditions and a high diversity in ethnic minorities, cultures, and farming systems. The Doi moi (“renovation”) program has, since the early 1980s, resulted in significant changes in agriculture production and related economic trends. However, poverty, low agricultural productivity, and land degradation are still major problems. This article illustrates the factors that drive these problems by analyzing agricultural land use in Suoi Con, a small agroforestry watershed in the Northern Uplands. We first identified the current land-use systems and analyzed constraints on agricultural production. The results indicate that although low soil fertility and land degradation are considerable problems, availability of household capital, low technology levels, and land fragmentation are major constraints on agricultural development. These constraints were analyzed from different points of view to identify mismatches between the implementation of top-down government policies and specific conditions that may explain why actual land-use change in the Northern Uplands deviates from the government's development plans. Results of land-use analysis in the Suoi Con watershed suggest that participatory and bottom-up approaches are needed to better understand problems and opportunities in household agricultural production in order to develop appropriate land-use plans and policies.
