1. Fault Tolerant Control of Multirotor UAV for Piloted Outdoor Flights

Abstract

This paper aims to develop a Fault Tolerant Control (FTC) architecture, for the case of a damaged actuator for a multirotor UAV that can be applied across multirotor platforms based on their Attainable Virtual Control Set (AVCS). The research is aimed to study the AVCS and identify the parameters that limit the controllability of multirotor UAV post an actuator failure. Based on the study of controllability, the requirements for a FTC is laid out. The implemented control solution will be tested on a quadrotor, Intel Shooting Star UAV platform in indoor and outdoor flights using only the onboard sensors. The attitude control solution is implemented with reduced attitude control, and the control allocation is performed with pseudo-inverse based model inversion with sequential desaturation to ensure tilt priority. The model is identified with an offline Ordinary Least Squares routine and subsequently updated with the Recursive Least Squares method. An offline calibration routine is implemented to correct IMU offset distance from the centre of rotation to correct for accelerometer bias caused by the high-speed spin after failure in a quadrotor., Comment: 30 pages with appendix

Abstract

Excitons spread through diffusion and interact through exciton-exciton annihilation. Nanophotonics can counteract the resulting decrease in light emission. However, conventional enhancement treats emitters as immobile and noninteracting. Here, we go beyond the localized Purcell effect to exploit exciton dynamics. As interacting excitons diffuse through optical hotspots, the balance of excitonic and nanophotonic properties leads to either enhanced or suppressed photoluminescence. We identify the dominant enhancement mechanisms in the limits of high and low diffusion and annihilation to turn their detrimental impact into additional emission. Our guidelines are relevant for efficient and high-power light-emitting diodes and lasers based on monolayer semiconductors, perovskites, or organic crystals.

3. Probabilistic Flight Envelope Estimation with Application to Unstable Overactuated Aircraft

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel and practical framework for safe flight envelope estimation and protection, in order to prevent loss-of-control-related accidents. Conventional analytical envelope estimation methods fail to function efficiently for systems with high dimensionality and complex dynamics, which is often the case for high-fidelity aircraft models. In this way, this paper develops a probabilistic envelope estimation method based on Monte Carlo simulation. This method generates a probabilistic estimation of the flight envelope by simulating flight trajectories with extreme control effectiveness. It is shown that this method can significantly reduce the computational load compared with previous optimization-based methods and guarantee feasible and conservative envelope estimation of no less than seven dimensions. This method was applied to the Innovative Control Effectors aircraft, an overactuated tailless fighter aircraft with complex aerodynamic coupling between control effectors. The estimated probabilistic flight envelope is used for online envelope protection by a database approach. Both conventional state-constraint-based and novel predictive probabilistic flight envelope protection systems were implemented on a multiloop nonlinear dynamic inversion controller. Real-time simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework can protect the aircraft within the estimated envelope and save the aircraft from maneuvers that otherwise would result in loss of control.

As a consequence, implementation of high-quality management of scientific data has become a global priority. The FAIR (Findable, Accesible, Interoperable and Reusable) principles provide practical guidelines for maximizing the value of research data; however, processing data using workflows-systematic executions of a series of computational tools-is equally important for good data management. The FAIR principles have recently been adapted to Research Software (FAIR4RS Principles) to promote the reproducibility and reusability of any type of research software. Here, we propose a set of 10 quick tips, drafted by experienced workflow developers that will help researchers to apply FAIR4RS principles to workflows. The tips have been arranged according to the FAIR acronym, clarifying the purpose of each tip with respect to the FAIR4RS principles. Altogether, these tips can be seen as practical guidelines for workflow developers who aim to contribute to more reproducible and sustainable computational science, aiming to positively impact the open science and FAIR community., 01 september 2023

Abstract

Background: The optimal duration of anticoagulation in patients with active cancer and venous thromboembolism (VTE) is unknown. Current clinical guidelines advocate anticoagulant therapy for 3–6 months and to continue anticoagulant therapy for as long as the cancer is active. However, an adequate systematic review on the rate of recurrent VTE after discontinuation of anticoagulant therapy has not been performed. Methods: For this systemic review and meta-analysis, we searched Embase.com, Medline (Ovid), Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar, from database inception to February 16, 2023, for studies on anticoagulant therapy in patients with cancer and the recurrence of venous thromboembolism after discontinuation of this therapy. We included randomised controlled trials and cohort studies published in English that reported on patients who met the following: cancer and a first VTE, completed at least 3 months of anticoagulant therapy, were followed after discontinuation of anticoagulant therapy, and with symptomatic recurrent VTE as an outcome during follow-up. Study-level data were requested from study authors. The primary outcome was the rate of recurrent VTE after discontinuation of anticoagulant therapy. A Bayesian random-effects meta-analysis was used to estimate the rate of recurrent VTE per 100 person-years for the pooled studies at different time intervals after discontinuation of anticoagulation therapy. We also calculated the cumulative VTE recurrence rate at different time intervals. Forest plots were mapped and the results were summarized by the median and 95% credible interval (CIs). This study was registered with PROSPERO, CRD42021249060. Findings: Of 3856 studies identified in our search, 33 studies were identified for inclusion. After requesting study-level data, 14 studies involving 1922 patients with cancer-associated thrombosis were included. Abstract

Background: Even though antithrombotic therapy has probably little or even negative effects on the well-being of people with cancer during their last year of life, deprescribing antithrombotic therapy at the end of life is rare in practice. It is often continued until death, possibly resulting in excess bleeding, an increased disease burden and higher healthcare costs. Methods: The SERENITY consortium comprises researchers and clinicians from eight European countries with specialties in different clinical fields, epidemiology and psychology. SERENITY will use a comprehensive approach combining a realist review, flash mob research, epidemiological studies, and qualitative interviews. The results of these studies will be used in a Delphi process to reach a consensus on the optimal design of the shared decision support tool. Next, the shared decision support tool will be tested in a randomised controlled trial. A targeted implementation and dissemination plan will be developed to enable the use of the SERENITY tool across Europe, as well as its incorporation in clinical guidelines and policies. The entire project is funded by Horizon Europe. Results: SERENITY will develop an information-driven shared decision support tool that will facilitate treatment decisions regarding the appropriate use of antithrombotic therapy in people with cancer at the end of life. Conclusions: We aim to develop an intervention that guides the appropriate use of antithrombotic therapy, prevents bleeding complications, and saves healthcare costs. Hopefully, usage of the tool leads to enhanced empowerment and improved quality of life and treatment satisfaction of people with advanced cancer and their care givers.
