Identical Lightning Imaging Sensors (LIS) aboard the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite (TRMM LIS, 1998–2015) and International Space Station (ISS LIS, 2017–23) have provided over two decades of lightning observations over the global tropics, with ISS LIS extending coverage into the midlatitudes. Quantifying the detection performance of both LIS sensors is a necessary step toward generating a combined LIS climatological record and accurately combining LIS data with lightning detections from other sensors and networks. We compare lightning observations from both LIS sensors with reference sources including the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) and ground-based Earth Networks Total Lightning Network (ENTLN), Earth Networks Global Lightning Network (ENGLN), National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN), and Global Lightning Dataset (GLD360). Instead of a relative detection efficiency (DE) approach that assumes the perfect performance of the reference sensor, we employ a Bayesian approach to estimate the upper limit of the absolute DE (ADE) of each system being analyzed. The results of this analysis illustrate the geographical pattern of ADE as well as its diurnal cycle and yearly evolution. Reference network ADE increased by ∼15%–30% during the TRMM era, leading to a decline in TRMM LIS ADE. ISS LIS flash ADE has been relatively consistent at 61%–65%, about 4%–5% lower than TRMM LIS at the end of its lifetime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

17. Lightning Imaging Sensor on the International Space Station: Assessments and Results from First Year Operations

Over two decades, the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and their partners have demonstrated the effectiveness and value of space-based lightning observations as a remote sensing tool for Earth science research and applications, and, in the process, established a robust global lightning climatology. The Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) provided global observations of tropical lightning for an impressive 17 years before that mission came to a close in April 2015. Now a space-qualified LIS, built as the flight spare for TRMM, has been installed on the International Space Station (ISS) for a minimum two year mission following its SpaceX launch on February 19, 2017. The LIS, flown as a hosted payload on the Department of Defense Space Test Program-Houston 5 (STP-H5) mission, was delivered to the ISS in the Dragon trunk and robotically installed in an Earth-viewing position on the outside of the ISS. Following successful activation and checkout, LIS has continuously observed the amount, rate, and radiant energy lightning within its field-of-view as it orbits the Earth. Placing LIS on the Space Station provides a great opportunity to not only extend the 17-year TRMM LIS record of tropical lightning measurements but also to expand that coverage to higher latitudes missed by the previous mission. Furthermore, this mission continues the important science focus to better understand the processes which cause lightning, as well as the connections between lightning and subsequent severe weather events. This understanding is a key to improving weather predictions and saving lives and property here in the United States and around the world. The LIS measurements, along with observations from the new Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) operating on NOAA's newest weather satellites, the Geosynchronous Operational Environmental Satellite-16/17 (GOES-16/17), are being used to cross-validate both systems. An especially unique contribution from the ISS platform is the production of real-time lightning data, especially valuable for operational forecasting and warning applications over data sparse regions such as the oceans. Finally, LIS provides simultaneous and complementary observations with other ISS payloads such as the European Space Agency's Atmosphere-Space Interaction Monitor (ASIM) that is exploring the connection between thunderstorms and lightning with terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs). - Abstract
In 2021, both social and economic activities began to return towards the levels preceding the COVID-19 pandemic for some parts of the globe, with others still experiencing restrictions. Meanwhile, the climate has continued to respond to the ongoing increase in greenhouse gases and resulting warming. La Niña, a phenomenon which tends to depress global temperatures while changing rainfall patterns in many regions, prevailed for all but two months of the year. Despite this, 2021 was one of the six-warmest years on record as measured by global mean surface temperature with an anomaly of between +0.21° and +0.28°C above the 1991–2020 climatology.

- Abstract
In 2021, both social and economic activities began to return towards the levels preceding the COVID-19 pandemic for some parts of the globe, with others still experiencing restrictions. Meanwhile, the climate has continued to respond to the ongoing increase in greenhouse gases and resulting warming. La Niña, a phenomenon which tends to depress global temperatures while changing rainfall patterns in many regions, prevailed for all but two months of the year. Despite this, 2021 was one of the six-warmest years on record as measured by global mean surface temperature with an anomaly of between +0.21° and +0.28°C above the 1991–2020 climatology. Lake surface temperatures were their highest on record during 2021. The number of warm days over land also reached a new record high. Exceptional heat waves struck the Pacific Coast of North America, leading to a new Canadian maximum temperature of 49.6°C at Lytton, British Columbia, on 29 June, breaking the previous national record by over 4°C. In Death Valley, California, the peak temperature reached 54.4°C on 9 July, equaling the temperature measured in 2020, and the highest temperature recorded anywhere on the globe since at least the 1930s. Over the Mediterranean, a provisional new European record of 48.8°C was set in Sicily on 11 August. In the atmosphere, the annual mean tropospheric temperature was among the 10 highest on record, while the stratosphere continued to cool. While La Niña was present except for June and July, likely influencing Australia’s coolest year since 2012 and wettest since 2016, other modes of variability played important roles. A negative Indian Ocean dipole event became established during July, associated with a warmer east and cooler west Indian Ocean. Northern Hemisphere winters were affected by a negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation at both the beginning and end of 2021. The spatial and temporal variability of cirrus cloud fraction within the tropical tropopause transition layer (TTL) is investigated based on three years of data from the Cloud--Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) mission, analyzed in conjunction with fields from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis (ERA)-Interim and temperature profiles from radiosondes launched at Manus Island, Papua New Guinea (2[degrees]S, 147[degrees]E). TEL cirrus is found to be mainly confined to the rising branch of the Hadley cell within ~15[degrees] of the equator, with maximum cloud fraction between 14 and 15 km. The time-varying spatial pattern of cloud fraction within this belt does not resemble the pattern of cloud fraction in the layer below, as would be expected if the TEL cirrus were formed by the spreading of the anvils of convective clouds. On the contrary, within the stably stratified layer above ~13 km, cirrus cloud fraction and temperature both appear to be modulated by the planetary-scale vertical velocity field. The time-varying spatial patterns are reminiscent of the vertical-propagating Kelvin wave response to an equatorial heat source, with the coldest, cloudiest air in the TTL centered approximately 30[degrees] of longitude to the east of the strongest heating. Cloud fields based on the first three years of data from the Cloud--Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) mission are used to investigate the relationship between cirrus within the tropical tropopause transition layer (TTL) and the Madden--Julian oscillation (MJO), the annual cycle, and El Nino--Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The TTL cirrus signature observed in association with the MJO resembles convectively induced, mixed Kelvin--Rossby wave solutions above the Pacific warm pool region. This signature is centered to the east of the peak convection and propagates eastward more rapidly than the convection; it exhibits a pronounced eastward tilt with height, suggestive of downward phase propagation and upward energy dispersion. A cirrus maximum is observed over equatorial Africa and South America when the enhanced MJO-related convection enters the western Pacific. Tropical-mean TTL cirrus is modulated by the MJO, with more than twice as much TTL cirrus fractional coverage equatorward of 10[degrees] latitude when the enhanced convection enters the Pacific than a few weeks earlier, when the convection is over the Indian Ocean. The annual cycle in cirrus clouds around the base of the TTL is equatorially asymmetric, with more cirrus observed in the summer hemisphere. Higher in the TTL, the annual cycle in cirrus clouds is more equatorially symmetric, with a maximum in the boreal winter throughout most of the tropics. The ENSO signature in TTL cirrus is marked by a zonal shift of the peak cloudiness toward the central Pacific during El Nino and toward the Maritime Continent during La Nina. - Abstract
The Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) was launched to the International Space Station (ISS) in February 2017, detecting optical signatures of lightning with storm‐scale horizontal resolution during both day and night. ISS LIS data are available beginning 1 March 2017. Millisecond timing allows detailed intercalibration and validation with other spaceborne and ground‐based lightning sensors. Initial comparisons with those other sensors suggest flash detection efficiency around 60% (diurnal variability of 51–75%), false alarm rate under 5%, timing accuracy better than 2 ms, and horizontal location accuracy around 3 km. The spatially uniform flash detection capability of ISS LIS from low‐Earth orbit allows assessment of spatially varying flash detection efficiency for other sensors and networks, particularly the Geostationary Lightning Mappers. ISS LIS provides research data suitable for investigations of lightning physics, climatology, thunderstorm processes, and atmospheric composition, as well as real‐time lightning data for operational forecasting and aviation weather interests. ISS LIS enables enrichment and extension of the long‐term global climatology of lightning from space and is the only recent platform that extends the global record to higher latitudes (±55°). The global spatial distribution of lightning from ISS LIS is broadly similar to previous data sets, with globally averaged seasonal/annual flash rates about 5–10% lower. This difference is likely due to reduced flash detection efficiency that will be mitigated in future ISS LIS data processing, as well as the shorter ISS LIS period of record. The expected land/ocean contrast in the diurnal variability of global lightning is also observed.

We have developed a technique to estimate the three-dimensional (3D) location of lightning optical pulses based on the stereo view of common lightning pulses from two different orbital instruments. The technique only requires the satellite position and the look vector to the lightning optical source. An example dataset of the Geostationary Lightning Mappers (GLMs) on GOES-16 and GOES-17 from 10 June 2019 is used to illustrate the technique. For this dataset, we find that the values for the stereo determination of cloud-top altitudes are on average lower by 740 m than the ones calculated from the lightning ellipsoid that is currently applied during geolocation. When we compare the locations to the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) Cloud Height Algorithm (ACHA), we find that our technique also produces slightly lower altitude values by 240 m. There is greater spread in our technique than either the lightning ellipsoid or the ABI cloud-top height that is likely due to the incorrect pairing of groups between the two GLMs and the 8–14-km resolution in the group locations. Based on GLM location errors derived from comparisons to ground truth sources, the uncertainty in the radial location determined by the stereo location technique is 5.2 km, while the altitude uncertainty is 4.0 km. The technique can be used to 3D map lightning or other optical sources such as bolides and other upper-atmospheric optical phenomena from any two orbital sensors with overlapping fields of view.
