Abstract

The acheivements of Frank Macfarlane Burnet, virologist, immunologist, a great biomedical researcher of the 20th century, and a Nobel Prize winner, are discussed. He began his career as a scientist in 1924 as a pathologist-baceteriologist. He did important work on polio, on genetic recombination of influenza viruses, and started use of the allantoic sac of embyronated eggs for producing viruses, a practice in use today for influenza virus for vaccines. He considered his work on clonal selection theory of antibody formation to be his best.
