44. Evaluating the impacts of wide row upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutumL.) production in Georgia

Abstract

Success stories of wide row cotton production have generated producer interest across the cotton belt. The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of row spacing on (1) cotton growth and development and (2) lint yield and fiber quality in Georgia. The cotton cultivar Deltapine DP 1646 (Bollgard 2, XtendFlex; Bayer Crop Science) was planted in 2021 and 2022 in Tifton, GA, at row spacings of 91 cm, 122 cm, 152 cm, and 183 cm. Although canopy closure was delayed in wider row spacings compared to the 91‐cm spacing, all other crop growth and development trends did not differ among row spacings. Similarly, row spacing had no effect on the incidence of boll rot/hard lock. The 91‐cm row spacing yielded 1734 kg lint ha−1. The 183‐cm row spacing reduced yield by 15% compared with the grower's standard row spacing of 91 cm. Fiber quality parameters did not differ among row spacing treatments. Seed costs can be reduced in all wide row systems evaluated for cotton, and the 122 and 152‐cm row spacings had similar yields to the 91‐cm row spacing. However, Georgia growers produce peanuts (Arachis hypogeaL.) and corn (Zea maysL.), the most common rotational crops for cotton producers, using a 91‐cm row spacing. Consequently, the simplest transition to wide row production would be the 183‐cm spacing, which incurred yield penalties in the current study. Thus, a 91‐cm row spacing is still the most feasible option for Georgia cotton producers. Wide row cotton production has potential benefits for Georgia growers.Planting cotton on 183‐cm row spacings reduces seeding rate 50% from 91‐cm row spacings, with plant populations being reduced 46%.Canopy closure was delayed in wider row spacings compared to the grower standard.All other crop growth and development measurements were similar across four row spacings.Lint yield was reduced 15% in 183‐cm row spacings as compared to 91‐cm row spacings.

46. Change in Oxygen Consumption Following Inhalation of Albuterol in Comparison with Levalbuterol in Healthy Adult Volunteers

Abstract

Background Albuterol is the most commonly used [beta] agonist to treat reversible lower airway obstruction. Albuterol contains a racemic mixture of two enantiomers. Levalbuterol contains the single R form enantiomer. Levalbuterol is frequently prescribed to limit cardiovascular toxicity. Objective We examined changes in oxygen consumption (V'O.sub.2) and heart rate (HR) following administration of albuterol and levalbuterol. Methods This is a prospective, randomized, single-blinded, controlled study of healthy adult volunteers. Subjects separately received albuterol (5 mg) and levalbuterol (2.5 mg) aerosolized over 15 min. V'O.sub.2 and vital signs were measured before the medications and 5, 10, 20, 40, and 60 min after. Results We enrolled 24 volunteers with a median age of 32 years. Compared to baseline, there was a significant maximum increase in V'O.sub.2 following administration of both albuterol (median 17% (1, 3 IQR 9, 43%) p < 0.001) and levalbuterol (median 23% (1, 3 IQR 10, 32%) p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the maximum increase in V'O.sub.2 following administration of albuterol compared to levalbuterol (p = 0.57). Compared to baseline, there was a significant maximal increase in HR with both albuterol (median 30% (1, 3 IQR 19, 43%) p < 0.001) and levalbuterol (median 23% (1, 3 IQR 19, 31%) p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant greater increase in maximal HR following administration of albuterol as compared to levalbuterol (p = 0.009). Conclusion Albuterol and levalbuterol both cause a significant increase in V'O.sub.2 and HR. There was no significant difference between albuterol and levalbuterol regarding the maximum increase in V'O.sub.2. Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at five locations in Punjab, India to study the effect of foliar application of urea (nitrogen) on the symbiotic parameters, growth, yield, quality, and monetary parameters of chickpea under irrigated conditions. The experiment consisted of foliar application of 2% urea at flowering stage, pod formation stage, at both the stages (flowering + pod formation), and control (no application) treatment. Application of 2% urea at flowering and pod formation stages recorded the highest number of nodules, dry weight of nodules, plant height and yield parameters. Improvement in these parameters led to significantly higher chickpea yield, by a margin of 26.0, 39.7, 14.1, 12.6 and 22.4 per cent as compared to control at Ludhiana (2017-18), Ludhiana (2018-19), Bathinda, Ballowal Saunkhri and Faridkot, respectively. On the basis of pooled mean of all the trials, foliar application of urea at both stages (flowering as well as pod formation) improved the grain yield by 19.3% over control, protein content by 12.7% and net monetary returns by 30.4% as compared to control treatment. It can be concluded that foliar application of 2% urea at flowering as well as pod formation stages should be done in chickpea under irrigated conditions for obtaining higher grain yield and net returns along with improved protein content, which can help in the fulfillment of protein requirement of the vegetarian population.
