Abstract: In response to the sustainability issues that agriculture faces in advanced economies, agroecology has gained increasing relevance in scientific, political, and social debates. This has promoted discussion about transitions to agroecology, which represents a significant advancement. Accordingly, it has become a growing field of research. We reviewed the literature on and in support of farm transitions to agroecology in advanced economies in order to identify key research challenges and suggest innovative research paths. Our findings can be summarized as follows: (1) Research that supports exploration and definition of desired futures, whether based on future-oriented modeling or expert-based foresight approaches, should more explicitly include the farm level. It should stimulate the creativity and design ability of farmers and other stakeholders, and also address issues of representation and power among them. (2) Research that creates awareness and assesses farms before, during or after transition requires more holistic and dynamic assessment frameworks. These frameworks need to be more flexible to adapt to the diversity of global and local challenges. Their assessment should explicitly include uncertainty due to the feedback loops and emergent properties of transitions. (3) Research that analyzes and supports farms during transition should focus more on the dynamics of change processes by valuing what happens on the farms. Research should especially give more credence to on-farm experiments conducted by farmers and develop new tools and methods (e.g., for strategic monitoring) to support these transitions. This is the first review of scientific studies of farm transitions to agroecology. Overall, the review indicates that these transitions challenge the system boundaries, temporal horizons, and sustainability dimensions that agricultural researchers usually consider. In this context, farm transitions to agroecology require changes in the current organization and funding of research in order to encourage longer term and more adaptive configurations.

Abstract: International audience; The forms and presence itself of farming in coastal territories changed profoundly in the 20th century. By contrast with other interface farming systems, such as mountain or peri-urban farming, coastal farming has rarely been studied as such and has not, until now, been considered as a useful category to describe and analyse production systems. The aim of this article is thus to address the relevance of such a categorization, using empirical data collected in Brittany (France) as well as contextual indicators, but also by carrying out a systemic qualitative-quantitative analysis, questioning the forms, depth and continuity of marine influence on farming activities at the local scale. We show that specific traits of coastal farming do indeed exist. A greater diversity of farming systems exists in coastal strip than inland at the regional scale. Four configurations of coastal farming were identified, which result from distinct dynamics and combinations of urbanization and environmental pressures on agriculture. But these specific features cannot be revealed without a comprehensive and historicized approach of its interactions with the coastal zone as a territory, rather than a biophysical milieu. These configurations are characterized in the typical spatial extent of coastal farming and spatial patterns of the transition to inland farming (gradient, discontinuities).

Abstract: International audience; The potential contributions of exogenous organic matters (EOMs) to soil organic C and mineral N supply depend on their C and N mineralization, which can be assessed in laboratory incubations. Such incubations are essential to calibrate decomposition models, because not all EOMs can be tested in the field. However, EOM incubations are resource-intensive. Therefore, easily measurable EOM characteristics that can be useful to predict EOM behaviour are needed. We quantified C and N mineralization during the incubation of 663 EOMs from five groups (animal manures, composts, sewage sludges, digestates and others). This represents one of the largest and diversified set of EOM incubations. The C and N mineralization varied widely between and within EOM subgroups. We simulated C and N mineralization with a simple generic decomposition model. Three calibration methods were compared. Individual EOM calibration of the model yielded good model performances, while the use of a unique parameter set per EOM subgroup decreased the model performance, and the use of two EOM characteristics to estimate model parameters gave an intermediate model performance (average RMSE-C values of 32, 99 and 65 mg C g(-1) added C and average RMSE-N values of 50, 126 and 110 mg N g(-1) added N, respectively). Because of the EOM variability, individual EOM calibration based on incubation remains the recommended method for predicting most accurately the C and N mineralization of EOMs. However, the two alternative calibration methods are sufficient for the simulation of EOMs without incubation data to obtain reasonable model performances.

Abstract: Le littoral et la gestion de l’eau : deux dimensions qui participent de la problématisation et des transformations des activités agricoles sur de nombreux territoires, en particulier en Bretagne où se déroulent les études de cas retenues dans Parchemins. Ainsi, trois des cinq sites d’étude sont concernés historiquement par d’importantes proliférations d’algues vertes qui matérialisent les continuités biophysiques entre les bassins versants et les milieux côtiers: les baies de la Forêt et Douarnenez (Finistère) et la baie de Lannion (Côtes d’Armor). Les recherches interdisciplinaires menées par les équipes de l’UMR Sols, Agro et hydrosystème, Spatialisation (UMR 1069 SAS) et le Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Sciences, Innovations, Sociétés (UMR 1326 LISIS) sur ces sites depuis les années 2000 sont à l’origine de la proposition de déplacement du regard qui fonde Parchemins, depuis la gestion de l’eau et des impacts environnementaux de l’agriculture vers les tensions qui traversent l’activité agricole en zone littorale et à ses transformations. Ce déplacement explique le choix d’ouvrir deux terrains supplémentaires sur lesquels la problématique de gestion des pollutions diffuses d’origine agricole est moins prégnante, mais dont les caractéristiques sont emblématiques de grandes transformations qui traversent l’agriculture en zone littorale: la spécialisation dans une production légumière d’exportation, historiquement inféodée au cordon littoral en Bretagne Nord (site du Goëlo-Presqu’île de Lézardrieux); et le double mouvement de déprise et d’orientation multifonctionnelle de l’agriculture qui caractérise les territoires connaissant un très fort développement touristique (Presqu’île de Rhuys).Le programme Paroles et chemins de l’agriculture littorale(Parchemins), porté par l’Institut national de la recherche agronomique (INRA, devenu depuis INRAE), a reçu pour la période 2016-2021le soutien de la Fondation de France viason programme Quels littoraux pour demain?(devenu depuis Les futurs du littoral et de la mer).Celui-cipoursuit trois objectifs principaux: ●Améliorer les connaissances du fonctionnement des espaces littoraux●Diffuser ces recherches auprès des citoyens et de leurs représentants, ainsi qu’auprès des gestionnaires (pêcheurs, conchyliculteurs, professionnels du tourisme, décideurs...)●Promouvoir les dispositifs de recherche participative impliquant les acteurs locaux.La Région Bretagne finance également depuis 2016 Parchemins au titre des recherches en appui aux politiques de l’eau; elle a renouvelé son soutien au programme pour l’année 2019.

7. Agricultural eco-design scenarios based on AGRIBALYSE® residual organic fertiliser inventories

Abstract: This work focuses on the assessment of the potential environmental benefits associated with the diversity of organic fertilisers available in the AGRIBALYSE database. Under the eco-design perspective, the shift from mineral to organic fertilisation regimes must not be over simplified, as fertilisation of each crop has an effect on the whole crop rotation. This work contrasts the environmental impacts of conventional crop rotations with equivalent eco-designed ones, featuring partial substitution of mineral by organic fertilisers at a level that the current yield is maintained. Two eco-design strategies involving AGRIBALYSE were devised. The first consists of retrofitting existing single crop processes by replacing conventional fertiliser inputs with newly available residual organic fertiliser processes. The second consists of eco-designing agricultural systems (i.e. technical itineraries representing crop rotations or crop sequences) by partially substituting mineral with newly available residues-based organic fertilisers. In both cases, it is necessary to adjust the fertiliser-related direct field emissions accordingly. In the second strategy, large amounts of organic fertilisers are input to replace mineral ones (tonnes vs. kg), and therefore overall impacts (i.e. impacts across impact categories) increase considerably, yet this effect is minimised when considering the alternative waste disposal pathways associated with the mineral fertilisation strategy (i.e. mineral fertilisation + disposal of the amount of organic residues necessary to deliver an equivalent level of fertilisation). The expanded functionality of a cropping system consuming organic waste-derived fertilisers (i.e. fertilisation + organic waste disposal) should be considered in comparative LCAs.

Abstract: Diversification of cropping systems has been proposed as a major mechanism to move towards sustainable cropping systems. To date, a diversification option that has received little attention is introduction of ley pastures into cropping systems, but the use of ley pastures is challenged by most future-oriented scenarios aiming to feed the world sustainably. In these scenarios, ruminant livestock feed only on permanent pastures, while cropping systems focus completely on production of crop-based human food. Diversification of cropping systems with ley pastures is thus compromised by knowledge gaps and future-oriented policy options. Here, we review ecosystem services provided by introducing ley pastures into cropping systems to increase sustainability of agriculture, discuss types of ley pastures and their management liable to promote these services, and raise future challenges related to introducing ley pastures into cropping systems. We conclude that (1) ley pastures provide a large set of input (soil conservation, nutrient provision and recycling, soil water retention, biological control of pests) and output (water purification, climate regulation, habitat provision for biodiversity conservation, forage production) ecosystem services of primary importance to cropping systems and society, respectively, as long as their spatial and temporal insertion within cropping systems is well-managed; otherwise, disservices may be produced. (2) To benefit from ecosystem services provided by ley pastures in cropping systems while limiting their disservices, it appears necessary to define a safe operating space for ley pastures in cropping systems. Moving towards this space requires changing plant breeding programs towards multiservice ley pastures, producing knowledge about emerging ways of introducing ley pastures into cropping systems (e.g., living mulch, green manure) and better quantifying the bundles of ecosystem services provided by ley pastures in cropping systems.

Abstract: International audience; In life cycle assessment (LCA), simple models are currently used to estimate cropping system nitrogen (N) emissions on farms. At large spatial scales (e.g., countries), these models are valid. At a smaller spatial scale (e.g., territories), these models may be less accurate, since they completely or partially ignore local conditions such as management practices, soil or climate. The purpose of this study was to consider the variability of those factors when estimating N emissions in LCA at the watershed scale. To this end, Syst’N, decision-support software based on a simulation model of crop and soil N dynamics at field and crop-rotation scales, was applied to predict N emissions from cropping systems in a coastal watershed (Lieue de Grève, France). Syst’N predictions were compared to N emissions estimated by AGRIBALYSE, a static site-dependent method at field and single-crop scales. Syst’N was more sensitive to site-specific soil properties than AGRIBALYSE. Estimates of N emissions that include spatial variability in soil and climate therefore become possible in LCA when a simulation model such as Syst’N is used in the inventory phase.

Abstract: The impacts of tillage and organic fertilization on soil organic matter (SOM) are highly variable and still unpredictable, and their interactions need to be investigated under various soil, climate and cropping system conditions. Our work examined the effect of reduced tillage and animal manure on SOM stocks and quality in the 0―40 cm layer of a loamy soil under mixed cropping system and humid temperate climate. The soil organic carbon (SOC) and N stocks, particulate organic matter (POM), and C and N mineralization potential (301 days at 15 °C) were measured in a 8-yr-old split-plot field trial, including three tillage treatments [mouldboard ploughing (MP), shallow tillage (ST), no tillage (NT)] and two fertilization treatments [mineral (M), poultry manure 2.2 t/ha/yr C (O)]. No statistically significant interactive effects of tillage and fertilization were measured except on C mineralization. NT and ST showed greater SOC stocks (41.2 and 39.7 t/ha C) than MP (37.1 t/ha C) in the 0-15 cm increment, while no statistical differences were observed at a greater depth. N stocks exhibited similar distribution patterns with regard to tillage effect. Animal manure, applied at a rate representative of typical field application rates, had a smaller impact on SOC and N stocks than tillage. The mean SOC and N stocks were higher under O than M, but the differences were statistically significant only in the 0―5 cm increment. MP showed lower C-POM stocks than NT and ST in the 0-5 cm increment, whereas greater C-POM stocks were measured under MP than under NT or under ST in the 20-25 cm increment. Organic fertilization had no impact on C-POM or N-POM stocks. In the 0-25 cm increment, NT showed a lower C and N mineralization potential than MP. Our work shows that the sensitivity of SOM to reduced tillage for the whole soil profile can be relatively small in a loamy soil, under humid-temperate climate. However, POM was particularly sensitive to the differential effects of tillage practices with depth, and indicative of differentiation in total SOM distribution in the soil profile.

Abstract: Both dilute and concentrated vinasse can be spread on agricultural fields or used as organic fertilizer. The effects of different characteristics of the original raw material on the biochemical composition of vinasse and their C and N mineralization in soil were investigated. Vinasse samples were obtained from similar industrial fermentation processes based on the growth of microorganisms on molasses from different raw material (sugar beet or sugar cane) and vinasse concentration (dilute or concentrated). The nature of the raw material used for fermentation had the greatest effect on the nature and size of the resistant organic pool. This fraction included aromatic compounds originating from the raw material or from complex molecules and seemed to be quantitatively related to acid-insoluble N. Samples derived from sugar beet were richer in N compounds and induced greater net N mineralization. The effect of evaporation varied with the nature of the raw material. Concentration led to a slight increase in the abundance of phenolic compounds, acid-insoluble fraction, and a slight decrease in the labile fraction of vinasses partly or totally derived from sugar beet. The effect of the dilute vinasse from sugar cane was greater. The concentrated vinasse had a smaller labile fraction, induced N immobilization at the beginning of incubation, and exhibited greater N concentration in the acid-insoluble fraction than the dilute vinasse.

Abstract: Addressing the issue of agricultural pollution in water protection areas (WPA) requires assessing the impact of agricultural activities at regional scales. However, current water quality modeling studies often neglect the agronomic concept of a cropping system and interactions with soils. This paper presents a participatory assessment framework involving local experts in building a shared diagnosis of nitrate losses from cropping systems in a WPA. It includes a co-designed typology of landscape units and participatory assessment of nitrate losses with the modeling software Syst'N. Results show that characteristics of cropping systems depended on soils and that nitrate losses were highest in shallow soils. Intercrop periods were identified as critical periods for nitrate leaching, which demonstrates the importance of considering pluri-annual crop rotations rather than individual crops. The framework is generic for a modeling approach based on the involvement of local experts, who define their functional system in an agronomically sound way. Réduire les pertes, rétablir les équilibres; The nitrogen efficiency is the ratio between the output of nitrogen in the animal products and the input required for the livestock production. This ratio is a driver of the economic profitability and can be calculated at various levels of the production system: animal, field or farm. Calculated at the scale of the animal, it is generally low with less than half-ingested nitrogen remaining in the milk, the eggs or the meat in the form of proteins; the major part of the nitrogen being rejected in the environment. Significant gains were achieved in the past via the genetic improvement and the adjustment of feed supply. At the farm level, the efficiency increases to 45% to 50%, thanks to the recycling of animal excreta as fertilisers. From excretion to land application of manure, the losses of nitrogen are very variable depending on the animal species and the manure management system. Considering the risks of pollution swapping, all management and handling steps need to be considered. Collective initiatives or local rules on agricultural practices allow new opportunities to restore nitrogen balances on local territory.

Abstract: A methodology is presented to assess the sensitivity of a complex model involved in integrated assessment and modeling approaches to spatial factors. The application considers the spatially-distributed agro-hydrological model TNT2, and its sensitivity to soil characteristics and their spatial distribution (soil pattern). The final goal is to identify soil input data that require more accurate description (measurement) and the relevant spatial resolution for soil information. Based on methods commonly used for non-spatially-distributed models (Morris method and a fractional factorial design with ANOVA), the proposed approach is innovative in the way that spatial input factors are considered in the global sensitivity analysis. The global sensitivity analysis is performed in three steps (i) screening among soil input data to identify those that most affect model outputs, (ii) quantifying the sensitivity of TNT2 to the dominant soil input factors and their interactions when considering a single soil and (iii) incorporating the soil pattern into the global sensitivity as an explicit input factor. The results indicate differences in the hierarchy of influential input factors between the screening and quantitative methods. The model's low sensitivity to spatial patterns provides recommendations for further field sampling campaigns. The hierarchical approach developed in this paper is based on sensitivity analysis methods with relatively low computational demand. The approach is generic and applicable to any complex spatial model. A methodology is applied to analyze the sensitivity of a model to spatial inputs.Influence of the spatial distribution of soil properties on model outputs is discussed.Results provide insights for further field sampling campaigns and model development.

Abstract: National audience; Livestock transforms nitrogen from plants into animal products and releases a part of nitrogen in manure which can be recycled as fertilizer. Animal farming development has led to a concentration of production in some regions and consequently a concentration of nitrogen inputs and emissions, causing pollution in water, soil and air. This issue has been dealt with by European policies for 20 years. Nevertheless, what do we know about nitrogen flow dynamics in livestock farming? What are the options and the appropriate scale to reduce nitrogen emissions and impact on the environment without hampering competitiveness of animal productions? In 2010, these issues motivated French Ministries in charge of Agriculture and Ecology to request a collective scientific expert assessment from INRA, on nitrogen flow in livestock farming systems. This paper focuses on the main results concerning ruminant livestok farming; L'élevage transforme l'azote des végétaux en produits animaux et en rejette une partie sous forme de déjections, qui peuvent être utilisées comme engrais. Toutefois le développement des productions animales a conduit dans certains territoires à une concentration des apports et rejets d'azote, et une pollution des eaux, du sol et de l'atmosphère. Cette problématique est traitée depuis une vingtaine d'années par les politiques européennes. Que sait-on aujourd'hui de la dynamique des flux d'azote issus des élevages ? Quelles sont les pistes et les échelles pertinentes d'action pour réduire les émissions et leurs impacts sur l'environnement tout en préservant la compétitivité des productions animales ? Ces questions ont motivé de la part des ministères en charge de l'Agriculture et de l'Ecologie, au printemps 2010, une demande d'expertise scientifique collective auprès de l'INRA pour disposer d'un bilan des connaissances sur les différents flux d'azote associés aux activités d'élevage. Nous relatons ici les éléments majeurs concernant l'élevage des ruminants.

Abstract: In addition to total organic carbon and nitrogen, potential organic carbon mineralization under controlled laboratory conditions and indicators such as the indicator of remaining organic carbon in soil (I-ROC), based on Van Soest biochemical fractionation and short-term carbon mineralization in soil, are used to predict the evolution of exogenous organic matter (EOM) after its application to soils. The purpose of this study was to develop near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) calibration models that could predict these characteristics in a large dataset including 300 EOMs representative of the broad range of such materials applied to cultivated soils (plant materials, animal manures, composts, sludges. etc.). The NIRS predictions of total organic matter and total organic carbon were satisfactory (R(2)p = 0.80 and 0.85, ratio of performance to deviation, RPDp = 2.2 and 2.6, respectively), and prediction of the Van Soest soluble, cellulose and holocellulose fractions were acceptable (R(2)p = 0.82, 0.73 and 0.70. RPDp = 2.3, 1.9 and 1.8, respectively) with coefficients of variation close to those of the reference methods. The NIRS prediction of carbon mineralization during incubation was satisfactory and indeed better regarding the short-term results of mineralization (R(2)p = 0.78 and 0.78, and RPDp = 2.1 and 2.0 for 3 and 7 days of incubation, respectively). The I-ROC indicator was predicted with fairly good accuracy (R(2)p = 0.79, RPDp = 2.2). Variables related to the long-term C mineralization of EOM in soil were not predicted accurately, except for I-ROC which was based on analytical and well-identified characteristics, probably because of the increasing interactions and complexity of the factors governing EOM mineralization in soil as a function of incubation time. This study demonstrated the possibility of developing NIRS predictive models for EOM characteristics in heterogeneous datasets of EOMs. However. specific NIRS predictive models still remain necessary for sludges, organo-mineral fertilizers and liquid manures.

Abstract: Our aim was to develop a typology predicting potential N availability of exogenous organic matters (EOMs) in soil based on their chemical characteristics. A database of 273 EOMs was constructed including analytical data of biochemical fractionation, organic C and N, and results of N mineralization during incubation of soil–EOM mixtures in controlled conditions. Multiple factor analysis and hierarchical classification were performed to gather EOMs with similar composition and N mineralization behavior. A typology was then defined using composition criteria to predict potential N mineralization. Six classes of EOM potential N mineralization in soil were defined, from high potential N mineralization to risk of inducing N immobilization in soil after application. These classes were defined on the basis of EOM organic N content and soluble, cellulose-, and lignin-like fractions. A decision tree based on these variables was constructed in order to easily attribute any EOM to 1 of the 6 classes.

Abstract: The aims of this study were to (i) assess N fluxes (mineralization, volatilization, denitrification, leaching) caused by spreading various organic wastes from food-processing, industries during a field experiment, and (ii) to identify, the main factors affecting N transformation processes after field spreading. Experimental treatments including the spreading of six types of waste and a control soil were set up in August 2000 and studied for 22 mo under bare soil conditions. Ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions, and nitrogen mineralization were measured in experimental devices and extrapolated to field conditions or computed in calculation models. The ammonia emissions varied from 80 to 580 g kg(-1) NH4+-N applied, representing 0 to 90 g N kg(-1) total N applied. Under these meteorologically favorable conditions (dry and warm weather), waste pH was the main factor affecting volatilization rates. Cumulated N2O-N fluxes were estimated at 2 to 5 g kg(-1) total N applied, which was quite low due to the low soil water content during the experimental period; water-filled pore space (WFPS) was confirmed as the main factor affecting N2O fluxes. Nitrogen mineralization from wastes represented 126 to 723 g N kg(-1) organic N added from the incorporation date to 14 May 2001 and was not related to the organic C to organic N ratio of wastes. Nitrogen lost by leaching during the equivalent period ranged from 30 to 890 g kg(-1) total N applied. The highest values were obtained For wastes having the highest inorganic N content and mineralization rates.

The data included results of proximal analysis (soluble, SOL, hemicellulose-, HEM, cellulose-, CEL, and lignin-like, LIC, fractions, in g kg-1 total organic matter) and of carbon (C) mineralization during long-term incubations under laboratory conditions (in g kg-1 exogenous organic C, EOC). The potential residual organic C after EOM application to soil was assessed from the extrapolation of the incubation results. Then, partial least square regression was used to relate EOM characteristics to the proportion of potentially residual organic C previously determined from the incubations. The biochemical fractions of EOM were not predictive enough to develop the indicator. The proportion of organic C mineralized during 3 days of incubation (C3d) was cumulated and appeared to be the most predictive variable of residual organic C. The proposed indicator of residual organic carbon in soils (expressed as g EOC kg-1) was IROC = 445 + 0.5 SOL - 0.2 CEL + 0.7 LIC - 2.3 C3d. The indicator was calculated for the main types of EOM applied to soils. When compared with the few field data of residual C measured in long-term field experiments, the values provided by the indicator seemed to be over-estimated (i.e. EOC degradation could be faster under field conditions than during laboratory incubations). Abstract: Models are useful tools to evaluate environmental impacts associated with nitrogen management in cropping systems and to predict them correctly. The purpose of this chapter was to analyze whether existing models satisfactorily simulate N losses in agroecosystems, require input data that are accessible, and can incorporate agricultural and climatic changes. The literature on 62 nitrogen models was reviewed. Each model was analyzed to identify the processes simulated, the equations used, the time and space scales, the input data and their degree of accessibility, and finally its performance. The review showed that a wide range of formalisms have been developed to model N processes. N losses such as nitrate leaching give better performance than N gas emissions, underlining the need to improve the understanding and modeling of denitrification and volatilization. It also revealed the narrow range of crop families parameterized and validated with field measurements. The main trend in modeling over the last 15 years has been the shift from mechanistic models to functional models, with a simplification of the equations involved and an aggregation of modules according to specific objectives. The more recent models have thus generally been based on specific contexts and cannot be directly extrapolated to other pedoclimatic and crop contexts, yet this is necessary for evaluating scenarios involving changes in land use and management or climatic uncertainties.

Abstract: International audience; The organic compositions of five different sludges and their residues obtained by neutral detergent extraction (NDF) were characterized by pyrolysis-GC/MS, and the composition of their “soluble” fractions was deduced. These organic characteristics were used to explain the observed mineralization when the sludges were added to a soil under controlled conditions. Certain of the biochemical compounds revealed by pyrolysis-GC/MS, such as N-containing compounds, ketones and polysaccharides, were common to all five sludges, but in different proportions. Lignin-derived products were, in contrast, only present in two sludge samples, and were especially abundant in the sludge composted with green wastes and wood pieces. Aliphatic compounds and acids probably originating from lipids were only observed in some of the pyrograms. Although the compositions of the different NDF varied, some global trends were apparent. The sludge NDF pyrolysates contained compounds originating from lignins, cellulosic and non-cellulosic material. Some of the proteins and peptides evidenced by pyrolysis in the total sludge remained after extraction in some residues, although they were expected to be solubilized in neutral detergent. The soluble residue consisted mainly of simple sugars, proteins, peptides and lipids. However, the solubilization of some specific compounds varied with the global composition of the sludge. No specific recalcitrant compounds could be evidenced in the neutral detergent extract. Relationship were established between relative abundance of some compounds and C and N mineralization rates: C mineralization rate after 14 days of incubation was correlated with the cumulated relative areas of (ketones + aliphatics + acids), C mineralization rate at day 168 with those of (phenol + benzene) and N mineralization rate with those of ketones, and N-containing compounds.

Abstract: International audience; This study aimed at determining food processing wastewater composition factors that regulate their carbon and nitrogen mineralization when added to soil. Twenty three different wastewaters from various food processing industries were characterized by C and N concentrations, liquid and solid physical separation and acid solubility. They were also incubated in a calcareous soil during six months at 28 C. The C and N concentrations were low but covered a wide range. Carbon and nitrogen were variously distributed in the liquid and solid fractions and much C was present in the acid-soluble fraction in which C to N ratios were low. The C and N mineralization measured during soil incubation covered a wide range of decomposition pathways. Carbon mineralization was linked significantly (p = 0.05) with the C to N ratio of the acid soluble fraction and C present in the liquid fraction. N mineralization was significantly correlated (p = 0.05) with the organic C to organic N ratio and the C to N ratio of the acid soluble fraction. Multiple factor analysis and clustering also enabled defining clusters which partially overlap the various origins of the wastewaters.

Abstract: International audience; Seventeen different wastewater sludges were characterized using both chemical and organic matter fractionation methods (water extraction, Van Soest method, and acid hydrolysis) and 6-mo incubation studies to assess their decomposition in soil. Simple correlation and multiple factor analysis (MFA) were then performed to establish relationships between composition and C and N mineralization of sludges. Carbon and N concentrations covered a wide range of values, but organic carbon (C.) to organic nitrogen (No) ratios were relatively low (from 5 to 19). Carbon and N were mainly distributed in the most soluble fractions of the Van Soest method and in the water-insoluble fraction at 100degreesC. Carbon mineralization varied from 180 to 661 g C kg(-1) organic C added during the 168-d incubation. The addition of sludges led to different inorganic N dynamics: from -3.3 to +120.0 g N kg(-1) sludge organic C mineralized after the 168-d incubation. Fractionation studies showed that the most discriminating method was acid hydrolysis. Carbon mineralization was linked with the proportion of sludge N and C present in the lignin-like fraction (r = -0.68 and -0.65, respectively). Significant relationships were established between N mineralization and No to C. ratio (0.88 < r < 0.95) and the C. to N. ratio of sludges, the C to N ratio of the soluble fraction obtained by the Van Soest method, the water-soluble fraction at 100degreesC, and the C and N present in the acid-hydrolyzable fraction. Finally, multiple factor analysis also enabled establishing a sludge typology using five clusters based on composition and mineralization characteristics.

Contexte et objectifs Les matières organiques épandues sur les sols en agriculture présentent une diversité importante liée à leur origine, à leur nature, ainsi qu'aux procédés de transformation des produits agricoles ou de traitement avant épandage. Hormis le retour des résidus végétaux sur les parcelles, qui constituent le gisement le plus important de matières organiques fraîches, les matières organiques épandues sont des effluents des filières agricoles et agro-alimentaires : effluents d'élevage (brut, traité, composté ou co-composté avec d'autres produits) et effluents provenant des industries agro-alimentaires (féculerie, amidonnerie, sucrerie, conserverie, laiterie, distillerie…). Viennent également s'ajouter les effluents urbains (boues de station issues de l'épuration des eaux urbaines, fraction fermentescible compostée des ordures ménagères, déchets verts compostés ou co-compostés…). Ces divers déchets ou effluents se présentent sous des formes physiques très diverses (liquides, matières en suspension, pâteuses, solides) et sont généralement très hétérogènes. Cette hétérogénéité s'observe non seulement entre les différents effluents, mais aussi en fonction de la période de collecte de l'effluent pour une même filière de production, que ce soit pour les effluents d'élevage, dont la composition est influencée par le stockage ou le changement de régime alimentaire, ou pour les effluents issus des usines agro-alimentaires, des stations d'épuration ou des installations de traitement de déchets, dont la composition est influencée par le type et la nature des produits traités, mais aussi par les procédés de production et de traitement, et par le stockage. Cette hétérogénéité distingue ces produits organiques des matières fertilisantes normalisées ou homologuées, celles-ci étant des produits certifiés homogènes, stables en composition et en production, réputés efficaces et présentant toute garantie d'innocuité. Par ailleurs, cette variabilité explique le manque de références sur le devenir de l'azote après épandage d'un certain nombre de déchets et effluents, et la difficulté de proposer des outils de prédiction ou d'aide à la décision génériques. Ce manque est d'ailleurs confirmé par la demande renouvelée des professionnels agricoles et les producteurs de déchets de pouvoir disposer de données sur la valeur fertilisante, malgré les nombreuses études antérieures. Abstract: International audience; Les sols remplissent des services écosystémiques indispensables à la vie humaine parmi lesquels celui d’approvisionnement en aliments et de régulation, par le stockage, la transformation et le transfert, de l’eau et des éléments tels que le carbone, l’azote, etc.. La matière organique est un élément déterminant du maintien de ces services de par son incidence sur la structure physique des sols, leurs caractéristiques chimiques et leur activité biologique. De fait, si le retour au sol de la matière organique issue du compostage des déchets et des produits résiduaires organiques est une pratique ancestrale, son intérêt ressurgit aujourd’hui face aux défis démographiques, alimentaires, climatiques et sociétaux auxquels nous sommes confrontés. L’un des intérêts du procédé, et non des moindres, réside également dans sa robustesse et sa rusticité. Pour autant, des points de vigilance demeurent tant côté impacts du procédé que côté qualité des composts. Cet ouvrage fait le point sur les avancées scientifiques et techniques effectuées ces dernières années dans le domaine du compostage et des composts. Élaboré en quatre parties, il traite tour à tour : des processus, des effets et des déterminants des procédés par aération forcée (Partie 1), des intérêts écologiques et agronomiques des composts (Partie 2), des risques sanitaires et environnementaux associés au procédé et à l’apport au sol de composts ( Partie 3). La quatrième partie est dédiée à une approche substrat de la filière ainsi qu’à une revue des modalités d’usage des composts en agriculture classique et biologique.

37. Caractérisation de la diversité de l’agriculture d’un territoire littoral : la Presqu’île de Rhuys

Abstract: « Parchemins » project studies Breton coastline farming’s issues. The Rhuys Peninsula’s study field is characterized by an inflow of tourists and residents as well as the proximity of an urban area. This touristic and peri-urban context leads to specifics issues for farming. This leads to wondering how the Rhuys Peninsula’s farming is specific and how it is shaped by tourism and urbanization. Some responses are provided by agricultural surveys which leaded to the characterization of the farming system’s diversity on the Peninsula compared to some inland towns. The characterization criteria have been selected in order to test an analytical frameword developed by Therond et al.(2017), which describes biotechnical functioning and territorial embeddedness of the farming systems. Through a factor analysis, those criteria highlighted the farming systems’ diversity. Tourism and urbanization generate constraints but offers opportunities to diversify the farming activities (agritourism, local saling). Politic and associative actors lead the Peninsula’s farming to an ecologization and a production’s relocation, which are eased by the context. The analysis might be completed by surveys on peri-urban and inland zones, and refined by human and social sciences.; Le projet Parchemins étudie les enjeux de l’agriculture littorale bretonne. Le terrain d’étude de la Presqu’île de Rhuys est caractérisé par un afflux de touristes et de résidents, et la proximité d’un pôle urbain. Ce contexte touristique et péri-urbain fait émerger des enjeux spécifiques pour l’agriculture, qui amènent à se demander en quoi l’agriculture sur la Presqu’île de Rhuys est spécifique, et comment elle est façonnée par le tourisme et l’urbanisation. Des éléments de réponse ont été apportés par la réalisation d’enquêtes agricoles qui ont mené à la caractérisation de la diversité des exploitations sur la Presqu’île, et par la comparaison avec des communes rétro-littorales. Les critères de caractérisation ont été choisis pour mettre à l’épreuve un cadre d’analyse développé par Therond et al. (2017), qui aborde le fonctionnement biotechnique et l’ancrage territorial des exploitations. À l’aide d’une analyse factorielle, ces critères ont permis de faire ressortir la diversité des exploitations. Le tourisme et l’urbanisation sont sources de contraintes mais représentent aussi une opportunité pour une diversification de l’activité (agritourisme, circuits courts). Les acteurs politiques et associatifs entraînent l’agriculture de la Presqu’île vers une écologisation et une relocalisation de la production, rendues favorables par le contexte. Les analyses pourront être complétées par des enquêtes sur des zones péri-urbaines non-littorales, et affinées par l’apport des sciences humaines et sociales.
