The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta, Linnaeus, 1758) is the most abundant sea turtle species in the Mediterranean Sea, where commercial fishing appears to be the main driver of mortality. The North Adriatic Sea (central Mediterranean) is a major feeding habitat for turtles in the demersal stage. Its shallow and flat seabed is ideal for bottom-towed gears, making interactions with sea turtles and incidental catches unavoidable. We provide evidence of the impact of Rapido trawls (a type of beam trawl) on sea turtles through the analysis of the distinctive injuries sustained by four turtles.

Fisheries outcome targets and their associated indicators can be classified in four dimensions: ecological, economic, social, and governance. As outlined in the ECOFISHMAN project, ecological indicators measure the trends in the state of ecological functions, economic indicators measure the state of the human component in activities that increase conventional gross national product and trends in production accounts and economic growth, social indicators measure the human dimensions focusing on communities, household demographics and their wellbeing, and governance indicators measure the performance of rules and institutions, of the mechanism and processes to articulate interest, and of the interactions and roles of the state, civil society, and private sector in fisheries management. The four main dimensions of a fishery are associated with different criteria that represent those properties that will be affected by the process of sustainability. Here we propose and discuss a list of selected ecological, economic, social, governance indicators for outcome targets relevant in responsive fisheries management systems (RFMS) using results-based management (RBM).

EC Regulation 812/2004 imposes to EU Member States to monitor the commercial fishing vessels for the evaluation of by-catch of cetaceans and its mitigation. In order to reduce the interactions with fishing vessels and to minimise the risk of incidental catch of cetaceans, acoustic pingers were tested on commercial midwater pair-trawlers in Central Adriatic Sea. A reduced number of sightings in presence of pinger was registered, even if the effect of this device was not statistically significant.

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) has developed a pilot web-site on energy efficiency in fisheries, available at https://energyefficiency-fisheries.jrc.ec.europa.eu. The site is accessible directly through the Europe web-site of DG MARE for fisheries. The pilot web-site includes reference documents and studies related to energy savings in fisheries, general information on research and funding opportunities and links to relevant EU projects, EU legislation and events, among others. The Commission is planning to update, further develop and maintain this web site. The main goal is the collection of additional information to update and develop further this web-site.

In data 23/12/2009 il contratto firmato tra MIPAAF e ISPRA prevede che i rapporti tra il CNR-ISMAR di Ancona e l'ISPRA - che svolge il ruolo di coordinatore generale - siano gestiti e regolati con un atto convenzionale, con onere economico secondo quanto specificato nella proposta di progetto accettata dal MIPAAF (Prot. 52755 del 17/12/2009). In data 09/06/2010 si è disposta la stipula della Convenzione tra il CNR-ISMAR di Ancona e l'ISPRA avente ad oggetto "Il monitoraggio delle catture accidentali di cetacei durante le operazioni di pesca delle volanti a coppia, secondo quanto previsto dagli articoli 4 e 5 del Regolamento (CE) 812/2004, in Adriatico e nel Canale di Sicilia". L'attività richiesta richiama gli obiettivi del PR 908 "Valutazione delle catture accidentali di specie protette nel traino pelagico" (Progetto BYCATCH-III) richiamando quanto dettagliato dal progetto approvato dalla Direzione Generale della Pesca Marittima e Acquacoltura del Ministero delle Politiche agricole, alimentari e forestali (DG PEMAC-MiPAAF, Prot. 52722 del 17/12/2009) e del successivo contratto tra il Ministero e ISPRA firmato il 23/12/2009. In particolare il CNR-ISMAR Ancona s'impegna a svolgere: 1) un minimo di 20 imbarchi sulle volanti a coppia, da porti selezionati di Marche ed Abruzzo, con un minimo di un osservatore qualificato e secondo quanto indicato agli articoli 4 e 5 del Regolamento (CE) 812/2004; 2) la messa a punto di sistemi di mitigazione delle catture accidentali di cetacei e tartarughe; 3) la valutazione critica dei risultati e la redazione delle necessarie relazioni; 4) la redazione di una relazione finale. Fatta salva la normativa vigente in materia di accesso, nonché quella relativa alla tutela della privacy e sicurezza dei dati e delle informazioni delle pubbliche amministrazioni, tutta la documentazione e le informazioni rese disponibili di cui Ie parti verranno in possesso durante l' esecuzione delle attività oggetto del presente atto, dovranno essere considerate riservate. E' fatto divieto alle parti di modificare, pubblicizzare e trasferire ad altri in qualsiasi formato la documentazione e le informazioni sopra citate e di utilizzare Ie stesse per fini diversi dall'esecuzione delle attività oggetto della presente Convenzione.

In this paper preliminary results obtained by the application of a scheduled procedure for the diagnosis and management of thyroid nodular diseases in the medical surveillance of radiation workers are discussed. The study demonstrates the utility of the schedule in early diagnosis of thyroid cancer in medical surveillance of radiation protection.
