Abstract

The LUMINEU is designed to investigate the possibility to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{100}$Mo by means of a large array of scintillating bolometers based on ZnMoO$_4$ crystals enriched in $^{100}$Mo. High energy resolution and relatively fast detectors, which are able to measure both the light and the heat generated upon the interaction of a particle in a crystal, are very promising for the recognition and rejection of background events. We present the LUMINEU concepts and the experimental results achieved aboveground and underground with large-mass natural and enriched crystals. The measured energy resolution, the $\alpha/\beta$ discrimination power and the radioactive internal contamination are all within the specifications for the projected final LUMINEU sensitivity. Simulations and preliminary results confirm that the LUMINEU technology can reach zero background in the region of interest (around 3 MeV) with exposures of the order of hundreds kg$\times$years, setting the bases for a next generation $0\nu2\beta$ decay experiment capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted as proceedings of the TAUP 2015 conference

Abstract

The technology of scintillating bolometers based on zinc molybdate (ZnMoO$_4$) crystals is under development within the LUMINEU project to search for 0$\nu$2$\beta$ decay of $^{100}$Mo with the goal to set the basis for large scale experiments capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern. Advanced ZnMoO$_4$ crystal scintillators with mass of $\sim$~0.3 kg were developed and Zn$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystal from enriched $^{100}$Mo was produced for the first time by using the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. One ZnMoO$_4$ scintillator and two samples (59 g and 63 g) cut from the enriched boule were tested aboveground at milli-Kelvin temperature as scintillating bolometers showing a high detection performance. Abstract

The LUMINEU program aims at performing a pilot experiment on neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo using radiopure ZnMoO4 crystals operated as scintillating bolometers. Growth of high quality radiopure crystals is a complex task, since there are no commercially available molybdenum compounds with the required levels of purity and radioactive contamination. This paper discusses approaches to purify molybdenum and synthesize compound for high quality radiopure ZnMoO4 crystal growth. A combination of a double sublimation (with addition of zinc molybdate) with subsequent recrystallization in aqueous solutions (using zinc molybdate as a collector) was used. Zinc molybdate crystals up to 1.5 kg were grown by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique, their optical, luminescent, diamagnetic, thermal and bolometric properties were tested., Comment: Contribution to Proc. of Int. Abstract

Optimal properties like piezoelectricity can be found in polarizable materials for which the structure changes sharply under small composition variations in the vicinity of their morphotropic phase boundary or the triple point in their isobaric temperature-composition phase diagram. In the latter, lead-free (Ba0.850Ca0.150)(Ti0.900Zr0.100)O3 ceramics exhibit outstanding piezoelectric coefficients. For the first time, we report the growth of piezoelectric lead-free single crystals in the BaTiO3-BaZrO3-CaTiO3 pseudo-ternary system. The stoichiometry control in the CaO-BaO-TiO2-ZrO2 solid solution led to single crystals with various compositions ranging from (Ba0.857Ca0.143)(Ti0.928Zr0.072)O3 to (Ba0.953Ca0.047)(Ti0.427Zr0.573)O3. We evidenced a continuous cross-over from a ferroelectric state at high titanium content to a relaxor one on increasing the zirconium content. Such a property tuning is rather seldom observed in lead-free ferroelectrics and confirms what was already reported for ceramics. Single crystal with (Ba0.838Ca0.162)(Ti0.854Zr0.146)O3 composition, which has been grown and oriented along [001] crystallographic direction, displayed electromechanical coefficients d31 and k31 of 93 pC.N-1 and 0.18, respectively, near the room temperature (T=305K). Abstract

The LUMINEU is designed to investigate the possibility to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{100}$Mo by means of a large array of scintillating bolometers based on ZnMoO$_4$ crystals enriched in $^{100}$Mo. High energy resolution and relatively fast detectors, which are able to measure both the light and the heat generated upon the interaction of a particle in a crystal, are very promising for the recognition and rejection of background events. We present the LUMINEU concepts and the experimental results achieved aboveground and underground with large-mass natural and enriched crystals. The measured energy resolution, the $\alpha/\beta$ discrimination power and the radioactive internal contamination are all within the specifications for the projected final LUMINEU sensitivity. Simulations and preliminary results confirm that the LUMINEU technology can reach zero background in the region of interest (around 3 MeV) with exposures of the order of hundreds kg$\times$years, setting the bases for a next generation $0\nu2\beta$ decay experiment capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted as proceedings of the TAUP 2015 conference

Abstract

The technology of scintillating bolometers based on zinc molybdate (ZnMoO$_4$) crystals is under development within the LUMINEU project to search for 0$\nu$2$\beta$ decay of $^{100}$Mo with the goal to set the basis for large scale experiments capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern. Advanced ZnMoO$_4$ crystal scintillators with mass of $\sim$~0.3 kg were developed and Zn$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystal from enriched $^{100}$Mo was produced for the first time by using the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. One ZnMoO$_4$ scintillator and two samples (59 g and 63 g) cut from the enriched boule were tested aboveground at milli-Kelvin temperature as scintillating bolometers showing a high detection performance. Abstract

An efficient new scintillator that contains lithium, gadolinium, and boron, all three of which possess large neutron capture cross-section isotopes for highly exothermic reactions, has been recently developed. The homologous yttrium material was also investigated. These compounds of composition [Li.sub.6]R[(B[O.sub.3]).sub.3] (R=Gd, Y) can be activated by [Ce.sup.3+]. The synthesis of powders was carried out by high-temperature solid-state reaction from the starting materials LiOH, [H.sub.2]O, [H.sub.3]B[O.sub.3], [Gd.sub.2][O.sub.3], or [Y.sub.2][O.sub.3], and Ce[(N[O.sub.3]).sub.3], 6[H.sub.2]O of purity [is greater than or equal to] 99.99%, under a flow of argon/[H.sub.2] (5%). Under ultraviolet excitation, they show a broadband emission peaking at 390 nm. The gadolinium emission lies near the maximum of a 4f-5d [Ce.sup.3+] absorption band, so efficient [Gd.sup.3+]-[Ce.sup.3+] transfer occurs. [Ce.sup.3+]:[Li.sub.6]R[(B[O.sub.3]).sub.3] (R=Gd, Y) crystals were grown by the Czochralski method in a resistance heating furnace using a conical vitreous carbon crucible of 150 [cm.sup.3] under deoxygenated pure argon. Monocrystalline boules as large as 3 cm diameter and 6 cm length have been obtained. The interest of these new materials is the high scintillation efficiency--as much as six times that of Li-glass scintillators for the Gd material. Moreover, these scintillators offer the ability to tailor their response to the neutron spectrum by varying the isotopic composition of the key constituents [lithium, gadolinium (yttrium), boron]. Abstract

International audience; The LUMINEU (Luminescent Underground Molybdenum Investigation for NEUtrino mass and nature) project envisages a high-sensitivity search for neutrinoless double beta (0 nu 2 beta) decay of Mo-100 with the help of scintillating bolometers based on zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) crystals. One of the crucial points for the successful performance of this experiment is the development of a protocol for producing high quality large mass ZnMoO4 crystal scintillators with extremely high internal radiopurity. Here we report a significant progress in the development of large volume ZnMoO4 crystalline boules (with mass up to 1 kg) from deeply purified materials. We present and discuss the results achieved with two ZnMoO4 samples (with mass of about 0.3 kg each): one is a precursor of the LUMINEU project, while the other one was produced in the framework of LUMINEU with an improved purification / crystallization procedure. The two crystals were measured deep underground as scintillating bolometers in the EDELWEISS dilution refrigerator at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France) protected by a rock overburden corresponding to 4800 m w.e. The results indicate that both tested crystals are highly radiopure. However, the advanced LUMINEU sample shows a clear improvement with respect to the precursor, exhibiting only a trace internal contamination related with Po-210 at the level of 1 mBq/kg, while the activity of Ra-226 and Th-228 is below 0.005 mBq/kg. This demonstrates that the LUMINEU purification and crystal-growth procedures are very efficient and leads to radiopurity levels which exceedingly satisfy not only the LUMINEU goals but also the requirements of a next-generation 0 nu 2 beta experiment.

Abstract

Thanks to a homemade dynamic vacuum system, fully crystallized VO 2 (M) is successfully synthesized in a merged step of vanadyl ethylene glycolate (VEG) decomposition and crystallization of VO 2 at high temperatures (>500 °C). During the whole process, vanadium valence (+4) is well maintained, and VEG microstructure plays an important role in the end-product size and shape. Finally, the suggested route appears well suitable for the mass production of VO 2 nanoparticles.

38. Carbon-reduction as an easy route for the synthesis of VO 2 (M1) and further Al, Ti doping.

Abstract

A low-cost and facile method to synthesize highly crystallized VO2 (M1) particles is proposed, using carbon black as the reducing agent mixed with V2O5 nanopowders comparing two types of vacuum systems for the thermal activation. In a sealed vacuum system, CO gas is generated in the first reductive step, and continues to reduce the new born VO2, until all the V (+4) is reduced to V (+3), resulting in V2O3 formation at 1000 °C. In contrast, in a dynamic vacuum system, CO gas is ejected through pumping as soon as it is generated, leading to the formation of pure VO2 (M1) at high temperatures (i.e. in the range 700 °C ≤ T ≤ 1000 °C). The evolution of the carbon content, determined by CHNS, of each sample versus the synthesis conditions, namely temperature and type of vacuum system, confirms that the transformation of V (+5) into V (+4) or V (+3) can be controlled. The characterization of the morphologies and crystal structures of two synthesized VO2 (M1) at 700 °C and 1000 °C shows the possibility to tune the crystallite size from 1.8 to more than 5 μm, with a uniform size distribution and highly crystallized powders. High purity VO2 (M1) leads to strong physical properties illustrated by a high latent energy (∼55 J g-1) during the phase transition obtained from DSC as well as high resistivity changes. In addition, with this method, dopants such as Ti4+ or Al3+ can be successfully introduced into VO2 (M1) thanks to the preparation of Al or Ti-doped nano-V2O5 by co-precipitation in polyol medium before carbon-reduction.

39. Two-Step Synthesis of VO 2 (M) with Tuned Crystallinity.

Abstract

Highly crystallized monoclinic vanadium dioxide, VO 2 (M), is successfully synthesized by a two-step thermal treatment: thermolysis of vanadyl ethylene glycolate (VEG) and postannealing of the poorly crystallized VO 2 powder. In the first thermolysis step, the decomposition of VEG at 300 °C is investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A poorly crystallized VO 2 powder is obtained at a strict time of 3 min, and it is found that the residual carbon content in the powder played a critical role in the post crystallization of VO 2 (M). After postannealing at 500 and 700 °C in an oxygen-free atmosphere, VO 2 particles of various morphologies, of which the crystallite size increases with increasing temperature, are observed by SEM and transmission electron microscopy. The weight percent of crystalline VO 2 , calculated using the Fullprof program, increases from 44% to 79% and 100% after postannealing. The improved crystallinity leads to an improvement in metal-insulator transition behaviors demonstrated by sharper and more intense differential scanning calorimetry peaks. Moreover, V 2 O 3 and V 2 O 5 with novel and particular microstructures are also successfully prepared with a similar two-step method using postannealing treatment under reductive or oxidizing atmospheres, respectively.

40. Laser demonstration with highly doped Yb:Gd2O3 and Yb:Y2O3 crystals grown by an original flux method.

Abstract

We present, to the best of our knowledge, the first laser demonstration of an Yb-doped Gd(2)O(3) cubic crystal. This crystal was obtained by the flux method using an original borate-based solvent, which was particularly well suited to the growth of rare earth sesquioxide crystals at half the working temperature of classical growth techniques. This flux method is a very interesting alternative for the production of laser sesquioxide crystals, not only because it provides access to new matrices of the cubic polymorph, but also because it permits high Yb(3+)-doping levels for these crystals. The first laser results of two highly Yb(3+)-doped sesquioxides, namely Gd(2)O(3) and Y(2)O(3), grown by this flux method are presented here, including the Ti:sapphire and diode pumping configurations. Laser efficiencies and emission spectra for these two crystals were studied and compared.
