Phase change materials that can absorb or release large amounts of heat during phase transition, play a critical role in many important processes, including heat dissipation, thermal energy storage, and solar energy utilization. In general, phase change materials are usually encapsulated in passive modules to provide assurance for energy management. The shape and mechanical changes of these materials are greatly ignored. An emerging class of phase change materials, liquid metals (LMs) have attracted significant interest beyond thermal management, including in transformable robots, flexible electronics, soft actuators, and biomedicine. Interestingly, the melting point of LM is highly tunable around body temperature, allowing it to experience considerable stiffness change when interacting with human organisms during solid-liquid change, which brings about novel phenomena, applied technologies, and therapeutic methods, such as mechanical destruction of tumors, neural electrode implantation technique, and embolization therapy. This review focuses on the technology, regulation, and application of the phase change process along with diverse changes of LM to facilitate emerging biomedical applications based on the influences of mechanical stiffness change and versatile regulation strategies. Typical applications will also be categorized and summarized. Lastly, the advantages and challenges of using the unique and reversible process for biomedicine will be discussed., (© 2023 The Authors. Using the strong reduction potential of the liquid NaK-78 alloy, we present a new versatile template-free approach to the synthesis of porous metal- and metalloid-based nanomaterials. With this novel approach, NaK can be simultaneously used as an agent for reduction, structure directing, and pore formation without the use of additional reagents.

Nanoparticles (NPs) have been employed as drug delivery systems (DDSs) for several decades, primarily as passive carriers, with limited selectivity. However, recent publications have shed light on the emerging phenomenon of NPs exhibiting selective cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines, attributable to distinct metabolic disparities between healthy and pathological cells. This study revisits the concept of NPs selective cytotoxicity, and for the first time proposes a high-throughput in silico screening approach to massive targeted discovery of selectively cytotoxic inorganic NPs. In the first step, this work trains a gradient boosting regression model to predict viability of NP-treated cell lines. The model achieves mean cross-validation (CV) Q2 = 0.80 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 13.6. In the second step, this work develops a machine learning (ML) reinforced genetic algorithm (GA), capable of screening >14 900 candidates/min, to identify the best-performing selectively cytotoxic NPs. As proof-of-concept, DDS candidates for the treatment of liver cancer are screened on HepG2 and hepatocytes cell lines resulting in Ag NPs with selective toxicity score of 42%. Introduction: Thyroid function depends on iodine uptake by the body as well as on exposure to various harmful environmental hazards (stress, ionizing radiation)., Aim: The aim of the work was to assess the effect of exposure to low and intermediate doses of external γ-radiation on the thyroid structure and function in young female rats at remote periods after radiation., Materials and Methods: Forty female rats were used to study remote effects of external γ-radiation exposure during 20 d (at daily doses of 0.1, 0.25 and 0.5 Gy) on the functional activity (levels of thyroid hormones, iodine metabolism) and the morphological structure of the rat thyroid) after 12 months following the radiation exposure., Results: An increase in thyroid mass and a decrease in total thyroid protein concentration along with a reduction of blood T3 and T4 was shown only in rat groups exposed to 0.25 and 0.5 Gy. Both the concentration of total iodine and its protein-bound fraction (1.2-1.4 fold, p  < .01) and the protein-bound to total iodine ratio were decreased in the thyroids of all irradiated animals. The 0.1-Gy group showed elevated thyroperoxidase (TPO) activity along with increased catalase activity, which may indicate the activation of iodine oxidation by thyrocytes. Only the 0.5-Gy group demonstrated reduced urinary excretion of iodine (2.1 fold, p  < .01).The reduction of thyroid function at radiation doses of 0.25 and 0.5 Gy was characterized by a microfollicular structure and the development of atrophic changes in the parenchyma, desquamation of thyroid epithelium and an increase in epithelium proliferation. The diameter of the thyrocyte nuclei was increased in rats exposed to 0.25 and 0.5 Gy, which indicates functional tension of thyrocytes., Conclusion: Our research shows that after a year, the exposure to external γ-radiation of 0.1, 0.25 and 0.5-Gy caused changes in the structure and function of the rat thyroid which are manifested by the development of hypothyroiditis (0.5 Gy), 'subclinical' hypothyroiditis (0.25 Gy) and functional tension of thyrocytes. The mechanisms of thyroid dysfunction - impaired- uptake of iodine and its organification against the background of activation of free radical processes - suggest disturbances in the function of the sodium/iodide symporter (NIS), TPO and thyroglobulin synthesis. In contrast to the intermediate doses, the effects of the 0.1-Gy dose were mostly found at the remote periods compared to the earlier periods (180 days).

Catheter-related biofilm infection remains the main problem for millions of people annually, affecting morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. Despite the recent advances in the prevention of biofilm formation, alternative methods for biofilm prevention or eradication still should be found to avoid traumatic and expensive removal or catheter replacement. Soft magnetic robots have drawn significant interest in favor of remote control, fast response, and wide space for design. In this work, we demonstrated magnetic soft robots as a minimally invasive, safe, and effective approach to eliminate biofilm from urethral catheters (20 Fr or 5.1 mm in diameter). Seven designs of the robot were fabricated (size 4.5 × 15 mm), characterized, and tested in the presence of a rotating magnetic field. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrated the superior efficiency of biofilm removal on the model of a urethral catheter using a magnetic robot, reaching full eradication for the octagram-shaped robot (velocity 2.88 ± 0.6 mm/s) at a 15 Hz frequency and a 10 mT amplitude. These findings are helpful for the treatment of biofilm-associated catheter contamination, which allows an increase in the catheter wearing time without frequent replacement and treatment of catheter-associated infections.

By overcoming all conventional limitations associated with the synthesis of metalloid micro- and nanoparticles in aqueous media, we present a new one-step approach to the synthesis of highly crystalline metalloid hollow architectures. The liquid metal-mediated synthesis of Ge- and Sb-based hollow structures with satisfactory reaction kinetics at room temperature and normal pressure is presented.

Bacterial biofilms play a major etiological role in dental diseases worldwide. Currently, toothpastes with bactericidal chemicals and abrasive materials are used as preventive care methods. However, chemicals can cause adverse side effects, with the use of antibiotics, fluorides, and antiseptics drastically reducing quality of life. At the same time, the rational design of bulk toothpaste materials has remained unexplored. In this work, we demonstrated a mechano-bactericidal strategy as an antibiotic-free and tooth-safe approach for dental biofilm elimination based on shape-anisotropy CaCO 3 (cubic-, stick-, and urchin-shaped). As proof-of-concept, we demonstrated superior efficiency during biofilm eradication from ex vivo teeth using urchin- and stick-shaped microparticles involving both Escherichia coli K12 (227 ± 32.6% and 215 ± 33%, respectively) and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 209P (210 ± 54.7% and 202 ± 55.5%, respectively) compared to the spherical particles that are employed in conventional toothpastes. These findings will potentially give rise to the development of novel and safer toothpastes with antibiotic-free bactericidal activity for the prevention of dental diseases.

The development of universal methods to synthesize materials with different structures is always in the researchers' focus. Despite the fact that various structures based on magnetite have already been obtained, synthetic approaches that allow to synthesize materials with a wide range of texture and functional properties are still very poorly presented. In this work, we demonstrate that a stable magnetite hydrosol can be easily converted into monolithic structures of xero-, cryo- and aerogel by careful varying concentrations and drying conditions. We have also theoretically explained the observed effects by studying the percolation threshold at the sol-gel transition by means of controlled assembly of magnetite nanoparticles. At the calculated percolation point three types of materials different in porous organization were obtained. Due to the high biocompatibility of magnetite nanoparticles, the materials obtained were evaluated for cytotoxicity on HeLa cells line. All synthesized magnetite structures show excellent biocompatibility and minor cytotoxic effects at concentrations up to 1 µg mL -1 . Considering that the porosity of materials can influence the manifestation of the hemostatic effect, whole-blood clotting study revealed the hemostatic potential of magnetite aerogel. Thrombosis-related diseases are the primary cause of death in the world. Despite recent advances in thrombosis treatment methods, their invasive nature remains a crucial factor, which leads to considerable deadly consequences. Soft magnetic robots are attracting widespread interest due to their fast response, remote actuation, and shape reprogrammability and can potentially avoid the side effects of conventional approaches. This paper outlines a new approach to the thrombosis treatment via reprogrammable magnetic soft robots that penetrate, hook, and extract the plasma clots in a vein-mimicking system under applied rotating magnetic fields. We present shape-switching bioinspired soft swimmers, capable of locomotion by different mechanisms in vein-mimicking flow conditions and whose swimming efficiency is similar to animals. Further, we demonstrate the potential of a developed robot for minimally invasive thromboextraction with and without fibrinolytic usage, including hooking the plasma clot for 3.1 ± 1.1 min and extracting it from the vein-mimicking system under the applied magnetic fields. We consider an interesting solution for thrombosis treatment to avoid substantial drawbacks of the existing methods.

Animal testing is often criticized due to ethical issues and complicated translation of the results obtained to the clinical stage of drug development. Existing alternative models for nanopharmaceutical testing still have many limitations and do not significantly decrease the number of animals used. We propose a simple, bioinspired in vitro model for nanopharmaceutical drug testing based on the decellularized spinach leaf's vasculature. This system is similar to human arterioles and capillaries in terms of diameter (300-10 μm) and branching. The model has proven its suitability to access the maneuverability of magnetic nanoparticles, particularly those composed of Fe 3 O 4 . Moreover, the thrombosis has been recreated in the model's vasculature. We have tested and compared the effects of both a single-chain urokinase plasminogen activator (scuPA) and a magnetically controlled nanocomposite prepared by heparin-mediated cross-linking of scuPA with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. Compositions were tested both in static and flow conditions.

Active controlling of optical properties of metallic particles holds great promise for nonlinear nanophotonics and compact optoelectronic devices. Except for the electronic and chemical tuning of their properties, active control through fast and reversible shape modulation remains a significant challenge. Here, we report on the concept for changing the color and brightness of single particles by reversible/irreversible tuning of their shapes. As a family of plasmonic materials with low melting points and high flexibility, we synthesized liquid metal microparticles with different interior (dense/hollow) and morphology from Ga and its alloys (GaNi, GaCu). Utilizing near-infrared femtosecond laser pulses, we achieve two regimes for reversible/irreversible optical tuning due to consequent weak/strong perturbation of the microcapsules (MC) shapes. The chemical composition and MCs morphology significantly affect the tuning of color and brightness, as well as the rigidity of the MCs to extreme laser conditions.

Thrombosis-related diseases are undoubtedly the deadliest disorders. During the last decades, numerous attempts were made to reduce the overall death rate and severe complications caused by treatment delays. Significant progress has been made in the development of nanostructured thrombolytics, especially magnetically controlled. The emergence of thrombolytic magnetic actuators, which can deliver tPA to the occlusion zone and perform mechanical disruption of the fibrin network under the application of a rotating magnetic field (RMF), can be considered for the next generation of thrombolytic drugs. Thus, we propose a systematic study of magnetic-field mediated mechanically-assisted thrombolysis (MFMMAT) for the first time. Four types of magnetic particles with different morphology and dimensionality were utilized to assess their impact on model clot lysis under different RMF parameters. Chain-like 1D and sea urchins-like 3D structures were found to be the most effective, increasing thrombolysis efficacy to nearly 200%. The drastic difference was also observed during the dissolution of 3 days old blood clots. Pure plasminogen activator had almost no effect on clot structure during 30 minutes of treatment while applying MFMMAT led to the significant decrease of clot area, thus uncovering the possibility of deep venous thrombosis therapy.

The unique properties of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles determined their widespread use in medical applications, the food industry, textile industry, which in turn led to environmental pollution. These factors determine the long-term nature of the effect of iron oxide nanoparticles on the body. However, studies in the field of chronic nanotoxicology of magnetic iron particles are insufficient and scattered. Studies show that toxicity may be increased depending on oral and inhalation routes of administration rather than injection. The sensory nerve pathway can produce a number of specific effects not seen with other routes of administration. Organ systems showing potential toxic effects when injected with iron oxide nanoparticles include the nervous system, heart and lungs, the thyroid gland, and organs of the mononuclear phagocytic system (MPS). A special place is occupied by the reproductive system and the effect of nanoparticles on the health of the first and second generations of individuals exposed to the toxic effects of iron oxide nanoparticles. This knowledge should be taken into account for subsequent studies of the toxicity of iron oxide nanoparticles. Particular attention should be paid to tests conducted on animals with pathologies representing human chronic socially significant diseases. This part of preclinical studies is almost in its infancy but of great importance for further medical translation on nanomaterials to practice.

Worldwide, there is a constant increase in mortality from malignant neoplasms, which is largely due to late diagnosis. One of the reasons for late detection is the lack of conditions for conducting a detailed examination at the outpatient level, since the routine method of examining ENT organs today remains examination using mirrors, but in recent decades, endoscopic methods of examination have become widespread - indirect endoscopy, fibrolaryngoscopy, contact endoscopy, NBI-endoscopy, endoscopy using light filters of the SPIES system, as well as diagnostics using fluorescent technologies. Also, a promising and new direction is the diagnosis of malignant neoplasms at the preclinical stage and precancerous conditions, for which molecular diagnostic methods are used - SCCA and microRNA., Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of various methods of endoscopic and molecular diagnostics of malignant neoplasms of the larynx and pharynx., Material and Methods: A study was conducted In the Department of ENT Oncology of the National State Research Center of Otorhinolaryngology of the Federal Medical-Biological Agency of Russia, which involved 46 patients with suspected malignant neoplasms of the larynx and pharynx. All patients underwent direct laryngoscopy under endotracheal anesthesia with simultaneous NBI-endoscopy, spies examination, contact endoscopy, and fluorescence testing, followed by biopsy and tissue sampling for microRNA concentration analysis, as well as blood sampling for SCCA concentration.

The article presents a clinical observation of the surgical treatment of a patient with radio-induced neurogenic sarcoma of the soft tissues of the neck that occurred 6 years after radiation therapy with SOD 66 Gy for stage II laryngeal cancer T2N0M0.

Numerous biomedical applications imply supportive materials to improve protective, antibacterial, and regenerative abilities upon surgical interventions, oncotherapy, regenerative medicine, and others. With the increasing variability of the possible sources, the materials of natural origin are among the safest and most accessible biomedical tools. Animal, plant, and fungal tissues can further undergo decellularization to improve their biocompatibility. Decellularized scaffolds lack the most reactive cellular material, nuclear and cytoplasmic components, that predominantly trigger immune responses. At the same time, the outstanding initial three-dimensional microarchitecture, biomechanical properties, and general composition of the scaffolds are preserved. These unique features make the scaffolds perfect ready-to-use platforms for various biomedical applications, implying cell growth and functionalization. Decellularized materials can be repopulated with various cells upon request, including epithelial, endothelial, muscle and neuronal cells, and applied for structural and functional biorepair within diverse biological sites, including the skin and musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms behind scaffold and host tissue interactions remain not fully understood, which significantly restricts their integration into clinical practice. In this review, we address the essential aspects of decellularization, scaffold preparation techniques, and its biochemical composition and properties, which determine the biocompatibility and immunogenicity of the materials. With the integrated evaluation of the scaffold profile in living systems, decellularized animal, plant, and fungal scaffolds have the potential to become essential instruments for safe and controllable biomedical applications.

For decades, scientists have been looking for a way to control catalytic and biocatalytic processes through external physical stimuli. In this Letter, for the first time, we demonstrate the 150 ± 8% increase of the conversion of glucose to ethanol by Saccharomyces cerevisiae due to the application of a low-frequency magnetic field (100 Hz). This effect was achieved by the specially developed magnetic urchin-like particles, consisting of micrometer-sized core coated nanoneedles with high density, which could provide a biosafe permeabilization of cell membranes in a selected frequency and concentration range. We propose an acceleration mechanism based on magnetic field-induced cell membrane permeabilization. The ability to control cell metabolism without affecting their viability is a promising way for industrial biosynthesis to obtain a beneficial product with genetically engineered cells and subsequent improvement of biotechnological processes.

Atherosclerosis, being an inflammation-associated disease, represents a considerable healthcare problem. Its origin remains poorly understood, and at the same time, it is associated with extensive morbidity and mortality worldwide due to myocardial infarctions and strokes. Unfortunately, drugs are unable to effectively prevent plaque formation. Systemic administration of pharmaceuticals for the inhibition of plaque destabilization bears the risk of adverse effects. At present, nanoscience and, in particular, nanomedicine has made significant progress in both imaging and treatment of atherosclerosis. In this review, we focus on recent advances in this area, discussing subjects such as nanocarriers-based drug targeting principles, approaches towards the treatment of atherosclerosis, utilization of theranostic agents, and future prospects of nanoformulated therapeutics against atherosclerosis and inflammatory diseases. The focus is placed on articles published since 2015 with additional attention to research completed in 2019-2020.

An investigation of the interaction principles of nucleic acids and nanoparticles is a priority for the development of theoretical and methodological approaches to creating bionanocomposite structures, which determines the area and boundaries of biomedical use of developed nanoscale devices. «Nucleic acid-magnetic nanoparticle» type constructs are being developed to carry out the highly efficient detection of pathogens, create express systems for genotyping and sequencing, and detect siRNA. However, the data available on the impact of nanoparticles on the behavior of siRNA are insufficient. In this work, using nanoparticles of two classical oxides of inorganic chemistry (magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) and silica (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles), and widely used gold nanoparticles, we show their effect on the rate of siRNA hybridization. It has been determined that magnetite nanoparticles with a positive charge on the surface increase the rate of siRNA hybridization, while negatively charged magnetite and silica nanoparticles, or positively charged gold nanoparticles, do not affect hybridization rates (HR).

Rapid detection of bacterial contamination is an essential task in numerous medical and technical processes and one of the most rapidly developing areas of nano-based analytics. Here, we present a simple-to-use and special-equipment-free test-system for bacteria detection based on magnetite nanoparticle arrays. The system is based on peroxide oxidation of chromogenic substrate catalyzed by magnetite nanoparticles, and the process undergoes computer-aided visual analysis. The nanoparticles used had a pristine surface free of adsorbed molecules and demonstrated high catalytic activities up to 6585 U/mg. The catalytic process showed the Michaelis-Menten kinetic with K m valued 1.22 mmol/L and V max of 4.39 µmol/s. The nanoparticles synthesized were used for the creation of inkjet printing inks and the design of sensor arrays by soft lithography. The printed sensors require no special equipment for data reading and showed a linear response for the detection of model bacteria in the range of 10 4 -10 8 colony-forming units (CFU) per milliliter with the detection limit of 3.2 × 10 3 CFU/mL., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest

For the widespread application of nanotechnology in biomedicine, it is necessary to obtain information about their safety. A critical problem is presented by the host immune responses to nanomaterials. It is assumed that the innate immune system plays a crucial role in the interaction of nanomaterials with the host organism. However, there are only fragmented data on the activation of innate immune system factors, such as toll-like receptors (TLRs), by some nanoparticles (NPs). In this study, we investigated TLRs' activation by clinically relevant and promising NPs, such as Fe 3 O 4 , TiO 2 , ZnO, CuO, Ag 2 O, and AlOOH. Cytotoxicity and effects on innate immunity factors were studied in THP-1(Tohoku Hospital Pediatrics-1) cell culture. NPs caused an increase of TLR-4 and -6 expression, which was comparable with the LPS-induced level. This suggests that the studied NPs can stimulate the innate immune system response inside the host. The data obtained should be taken into account in future research and to create safe-by-design biomedical nanomaterials.

Macrophages are components of the innate immune system that control a plethora of biological processes. Macrophages can be activated towards pro-inflammatory (M1) or anti-inflammatory (M2) phenotypes depending on the cue; however, polarization may be altered in bacterial and viral infections, cancer, or autoimmune diseases. Metal (zinc, iron, titanium, copper, etc.) oxide nanoparticles are widely used in therapeutic applications as drugs, nanocarriers, and diagnostic tools. Macrophages can recognize and engulf nanoparticles, while the influence of macrophage-nanoparticle interaction on cell polarization remains unclear. In this review, we summarize the molecular mechanisms that drive macrophage activation phenotypes and functions upon interaction with nanoparticles in an inflammatory microenvironment. The manifold effects of metal oxide nanoparticles on macrophages depend on the type of metal and the route of synthesis. While largely considered as drug transporters, metal oxide nanoparticles nevertheless have an immunotherapeutic potential, as they can evoke pro- or anti-inflammatory effects on macrophages and become essential for macrophage profiling in cancer, wound healing, infections, and autoimmunity.

Enzymes are macromolecular biocatalysts, widely used in food industry. In applications, enzymes are often immobilized on inert and insoluble carriers, which increase their efficiency due to multiple reusability. The properties of immobilized enzymes depend on the immobilization method and the carrier type. The choice of the carrier usually concerns the biocompatibility, chemical and thermal stability, insolubility under reaction conditions, capability of easy regeneration and reusability, as well as cost efficiency. In this review, we provide an overview of various carriers for enzyme immobilization, with the primary focus on food industry.

Nanostructured drugs are being approved for clinical use, although there is a serious deficit of systematic studies of these materials. Data on toxicity of nanoparticles (NPs) can vary due to different methods of preparation, size, and shape. We investigated the toxicity against cultured human cells, the acute toxicity in mice, and the influence on conjugative transfer of antibiotic resistance genes of clinically relevant NPs such as TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , HfO 2 , Ta 2 O 5 , Fe 3 O 4 , and AlOOH. NPs were synthesized as aqueous sols by the same method in aqueous solution, with almost identical size 2-10 nm. None of these NPs was cytotoxic at concentrations compatible with water solubility. Furthermore, TiO 2 , HfO 2 , Ta 2 O 5 , Fe 3 O 4 , and AlOOH were not toxic to mice after oral administration. However, ZrO 2 showed rather high toxicity, with LD 50 2277.8 mg/kg. Experiments with plasmid transfer between bacteria demonstrated that AlOOH NPs were the most hazardous since this material promoted the emergence of resistance to antibiotics. Thus, although our metal oxide NPs are largely non-toxic, their properties may differ in specific biological situations.

A major obstacle in developing upconversion aerogels is the incompatibility of the highly-developed porosity and the crystal structure required for converting light to a shorter wavelength. We propose a novel method for creating a sol-gel procedure for synthesizing metal (Zr, Hf, and Ta) oxide upconverison aerogels uniformly doped with Er3+ and Yb3+ by precisely adjusting the calcination conditions.

In this study, we present a new concept for the simple visual detection of nano-scale objects in solutions. To achieve this goal, we developed chromogen-free interference-based sensors that provided a color visible reaction directly after the interaction of the analyte with the substrate. The effect is based on the strong optical interference occurring at the interface between the inkjet printed sol-gel titania film (a layer with high refractive index) and the adsorbed nano-sized objects (layer with low refractive index), which can be detected even with the naked eye. Herein, we have developed a synthetic strategy for the inkjet printing of interference sensors with controllable color change through thickness adjustment.

Alumina is one of the most promising carriers for drug delivery due to the long history of its usage as a vaccine adjuvant. Sol-gel synthesis provides excellent conditions for entrapment of biomolecules within an inorganic cage providing stabilization of proteins under the extremal conditions. In this paper, we show in vitro investigation of monodisperse alumina xerogel nanocontainers (AXNCs) using bovine serum albumin as a model protein entrapped in sol-gel alumina building blocks. Particularly, dose and cell-type dependent cytotoxicity in HeLa and A549 cancer cell lines were employed as well as investigation of antibacterial effect and stability of AXNCs in different biological media. It was shown, that the release of entrapped protein could be provided only in low pH buffer (as in cancer cell cytoplasm). This property could be applied for anticancer drug development. We also discovered boehmite nanoparticles effect on horizontal gene transfer and observed the appearance of antibiotic resistance by means of exchanging of the corresponding plasmid between two different E. coli strains. The present work may help to understand better the influence of AXNCs on various biological systems, such as prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, and the activity of AXNCs in different biological media.

The paper presents a case of rare localization histiocytoma of the oropharynx. Some authors consider the existence of this category of tumors controversial, others prefer to consider them tumors of unclear Genesis. Benign fibrous histiocytoma is quite common in the form of a small node with fairly clear boundaries, most often localized on the skin of various parts of the body. We have not found any cases of fibrous histiocytoma localization in the head and neck in the available literature. Given the results of the patient survey (data endoscopy, ultrasound soft tissues of the neck and MRI neck) were diagnosed with benign tumors retrofaringealny space and, given its location, the decision about the feasibility of transoral removal of the tumor with subsequent histological examination of tissue.

Mucosal neuromas, or ganglioneuromas, attract attention as a frequent component of multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndrome type 2B. The paper describes a clinical and morphological case of solitary oropharyngeal ganglioneuroma in a 60-year-old man, whose observation has not revealed its apparent association with the MEN syndrome.

Here, for the first time, we investigated the effects of matrixes with different nature on the stimuli-responsive mechanoluminescence (ML) of incorporated nanoparticles. It turned out that the contraction forces initiated by polymerization process can have compressive effects that differ by orders. This effect was achieved owing to the introduction of ML crystals in an alumina sol-gel system, which has large surface of coagulation contact. As one particle of boehmite results in a tension of 10 -17 -10 -16 N per one particle of matrix, compared to 10 -19 N of PDMS matrix, the threshold of mechanoluminescence was reached at 0.04 Pa, whereas the most active materials to date did not exceed this value. The control over enzymatic activity by physical stimuli is of interest to many applications in medicine, biotechnology, synthetic biology, and nanobionics. Although the main focus has been on optically responsive systems, alternative strategies to modulate the enzymatic activity of hybrid systems are needed. Here we describe a radiofrequency (RF) field controlled catalytic activity of an enzymatic sol-gel composite. Specifically, the activity of bovine carbonic anhydrase entrapped in sol-gel-derived magnetite (enzyme@ferria) composite was accelerated by a factor of 460% compared to its initial value, by applying the RF field of 937 A/m, with fast response time. This acceleration is reversible and its magnitude controllable. An acceleration mechanism, based on RF-induced heating of the magnetite by the Néel relaxation effect, is proposed and proven. The entrapment within a sol-gel matrix solves the problem of enhancing activity by heating without denaturing the enzyme. RF-controlled enzymatic composites can be potentially applied as biological RF sensors or to control biochemical reactions within living organisms.

Mortality and disabilities as outcomes of cardiovascular diseases are primarily related to blood clotting. Optimization of thrombolytic drugs is aimed at the prevention of side effects (in particular, bleeding) associated with a disbalance between coagulation and anticoagulation caused by systemically administered agents. Minimally invasive and efficient approaches to deliver the thrombolytic agent to the site of clot formation are needed. Herein, we report a novel nanocomposite prepared by heparin-mediated cross-linking of urokinase with magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs@uPA). We showed that heparin within the composition evoked no inhibitory effects on urokinase activity. Importantly, the magneto-control further increased the thrombolytic efficacy of the composition. Using our nanocomposition, we demonstrated efficient lysis of experimental clots in vitro and in animal vessels followed by complete restoration of blood flow. No sustained toxicity or hemorrhagic complications were registered in rats and rabbits after single bolus i.v. injection of therapeutic doses of MNPs@uPA. We conclude that MNPs@uPA is a prototype of easy-to-prepare, inexpensive, biocompatible, and noninvasive thrombolytic nanomedicines potentially useful in the treatment of blood clotting.

Nanocontainers based solely on magnetite NPs have been synthesized by indirect gelation of stable magnetite hydrosol at ambient temperature using the microemulsion-assisted sol-gel method. Containers synthesized have adjustable size and consist of ∼10 nm magnetite nanoparticles linked by Fe-O-Fe interparticle bonds. The material demonstrates high magnetization values up to 60 emu/g and low cytotoxicity against both HeLa and postnatal human fibroblast (up to 260 μg/mL). The systems developed are perspective as a drug depot, particularly for magnetically controlled thrombolysis.

The present study is devoted to the development of a new class recyclable magnetic catalytic nanocomposites for starch hydrolysis. α-Amylase was entrapped within a magnetite-derived xerogel matrix in a course of a room-temperature sol-gel transition, leading to enzyme immobilization within the pores of a rigid magnetic matrix. For hybrid organo-inorganic composites with enzyme mass fractions less than 10 wt %, no enzyme leaching was observed. At 80 °C, the amylase@ferria composite demonstrates catalytic activity on the level of 10 units/mg and the starch hydrolysis rate comparable to free enzyme, while at 90 °C, the activity of amylase@ferria is at least twice higher than that of free amylase as a result of higher thermal stability of the composite. Entrapped amylase showed excellent stability and lost only 9% of its activity after 21 days of storage in a buffer solution, while free enzyme was totally inactivated after 17 days. The material can be used as either a magnetically separable reusable catalyst or a catalytic ceramic coating with at least 10 cycles of use.

Sol-gel monoliths based on SiO 2 , TiO 2 and ZrO 2 with holographic colourful diffraction on their surfaces were obtained via a sol-gel synthesis and soft lithography combined method. The production was carried out without any additional equipment at near room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The accurately replicated wavy structure with nanoscale size of material particles yields holographic effect and its visibility strongly depends on refractive index (RI) of materials. Addition of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in systems increases their RI and lends absorbing properties due to extremely high light absorption constant. Further prospective and intriguing applications based on the most successful samples, MWCNTs-doped titania, were investigated as reversible optical humidity sensor. Owing to such property as reversible resuspension of TiO 2 nanoparticles while interacting with water, it was proved that holographic xerogels can repeatedly act as humidity sensors. We describe the synthesis and properties of a new composite material based on heparin and MIL-101(Fe) metal-organic framework. The intrinsic instability of MIL-101(Fe) towards hydrolysis enables binding of heparin molecules to the framework structure as is evidenced by DFT calculations and adsorption experiments. The de novo formed heparin-MOF composites showed good biocompatibility in in vitro and demonstrated pronounced anticoagulant activity. The specific interaction between the bioactive molecule and the carrier is critical for the selective degradation of the complex in the body fluids and for the enhanced activity. Hep&#95;MIL-101(Fe) composite could serve as a drug-releasing depot for nanofabrication and to introduce anticoagulant activity to medical devices and biocoatings. Addition of Hep&#95;MIL-101(Fe) to a sol-gel derived thrombolytic matrix allowed the combination of anticoagulant and thrombolytic activities in a single hybrid nanomaterial that could be applied as a bioactive nanocoating for PTFE vein implants.

Bleeding remains one of the main causes of premature mortality at present, with internal bleeding being the most dangerous case. In this paper, magnetic hemostatic nanoparticles are shown for the first time to assist in minimally invasive treatment of internal bleeding, implying the introduction directly into the circulatory system followed by localization in the bleeding zone due to the application of an external magnetic field. Nanoparticles were produced by entrapping human thrombin (THR) into a sol-gel derived magnetite matrix followed by grinding to sizes below 200 nm and subsequent colloidization. Prepared colloids show protrombotic activity and cause plasma coagulation in in vitro experiments. We also show here using a model blood vessel that the THR@ferria composite does not cause systematic thrombosis due to low activity, but being concentrated by an external magnetic field with simultaneous fibrinogen injection accelerates local hemostasis and stops the bleeding. For instance, a model vessel system with circulating blood at the puncture of the vessel wall and the application of a permanent magnetic field yielded a hemostasis time by a factor of 6.5 shorter than that observed for the control sample. Biocompatibility of composites was tested on HELF and HeLa cells and revealed no toxic effects.

A magnetite-only hydrogel was prepared for the first time by weak base mediated gelation of stable magnetite hydrosols at room temperature. The hydrogel consists of 10 nm magnetite nanoparticles linked by interparticle Fe-O-Fe bonds and has the appearance of a dark-brown viscous thixotropic material. The water content in the hydrogel could be up to 93.6% by mass while volume fraction reaches 99%. The material shows excellent biocompatibility and minor cytotoxic effects at concentrations up to 207 μg mL -1 . The gel shows excellent sorption capacity for heavy metal adsorption such as chrome and lead ions, which is 225% more than the adsorption capacity of magnetite nanoparticles. Due to thixotropic nature, the gel demonstrates mechanical stimuli-responsive release behavior with up to 98% release triggered by ultrasound irradiation. The material shows superparamagnetic behavior with a coercivity of 65 emu g -1 at 6000 Oe. The magnetite gels prepared could be used for the production of magnetite aerogels, magnetic drug delivery systems with controlled release and highly efficient sorbents for hydrometallurgy.

Burn wounds are one of the most important causes of mortality and especially morbidity around the world. Burn wound healing and skin tissue regeneration remain thus one of the most important challenges facing the mankind. In the present study we have addressed this challenge, applying a solution-stabilized dispersion TiO 2 nanoparticles, hypothesizing that their ability to adsorb proteins will render them a strong capacity in inducing body fluid coagulation and create a protective hybrid material coating. The in vitro study of interaction between human blood and titania resulted at enhanced TiO 2 concentrations in formation of rather dense gel composite materials and even at lower content revealed specific adsorption pattern initiating the cascade response, promising to facilitate the regrowth of the skin. The subsequent in vivo study of the healing of burn wounds in rats demonstrated formation of a strongly adherent crust of a nanocomposite, preventing infection and inflammation with quicker reduction of wound area compared to untreated control. The most important result in applying the TiO 2 dispersion was the apparently improved regeneration of damaged tissues with appreciable decrease in scar formation and skin color anomalies.

We have demonstrated for the first time an inkjet fabrication of highly efficient luminescent structures based on Eu-doped ZrO 2 nanocrystals (3.4 ± 0.3 nm), with a refractive index close to the one of the bulk materials. The nanoparticles were synthesised using a nonhydrolytic method in benzyl alcohol where the particles were post treated using acetic acid, leading to the formation of a stable colloid. It was shown that the non-polar methyl group of the acetic acid is responsible for its penetration through the hydrophobic layer all the way through to the surface of the ZrO 2 , leading to the cleavage of the Zr-OCH 2 C 6 H 5 bond and the formation of surface acetate species and a concomitant decomposition of the zirconia superlattice. Hereby we show a new and efficient universal ink production through a multi-step process - starting from solvothermal synthesis, dispersion of nanocrystals in water, and adaptation of the rheological parameters of the resulting sols. Eventually, we were able to obtain inks that we used for the production of optical coatings, monolayer luminescent-protected holography and anti-counterfeiting printing. These structures, obtained at room temperature through inkjet printing, present dense xerogel structures with high optical transparency, a high refractive index and more efficient luminescence compared with the non-homogeneous structures produced as a mixture of rare-earth elements and nanocrystals.

We present a new approach for obtaining magnetic nanospheres with tunable size and high magnetization. The method is implemented via controllable destabilization of a stable magnetite hydrosol with glycerol, leading to the formation of aggregates followed by their stabilization with the citrate shell. This inexpensive, simple and easily scalable approach required no special equipment. The obtained samples were characterized by high stability and magnetization over 80 emu/g. Effects of synthetic conditions on physicochemical properties of nanospheres were monitored by hydrodynamic size, zeta potential, and polydispersity of magnetite aggregates. The size of the resulting aggregates varied between 650 nm and 40 nm, and the zeta potential from +30 mV to -43 mV by changing the ratio of the reagents. Under optimal conditions the clusters with a diameter of 80 nm were produced with a narrow size distribution ±3 nm. These characteristics allowed for optical response to the external magnetic field, thereby producing a magnetic photon liquid. Due to biocompatibility of the reagents used in the synthesis the nanospheres evoked a negligible cytotoxicity for human non-malignant and tumor cell lines. These results make new materials valuable in photonics and biomedicine.

A major obstacle in the introduction of luminescent nanoparticles (NPs) for medical applications is that quantum dots, the most widely studied luminescent materials, despite being biologically safe after coating with a bioshell, still contain a toxic core mostly consisting of semi-conductor NPs, which are not approved by regulatory agencies. Here we point to a potential solution of this problem by using rare-earth (RE) doped hafnia NPs. Hafnia is approved for medical injections as an effective means for the treatment of radiosensitive and radioresistant tumors and can significantly decrease potential toxicity of RE ions. As a step towards the achievement of this goal we describe the development of a bio-friendly method for the preparation of a stable doped hafnia hydrosol with an isoelectric point (IEP) of 8.2, which shows high fluorescence and biocompatibility in regular coagulant tests and cytotoxic assays., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V.
