Abstract

The increase in instantaneous luminosity during the high-luminosity phase of the LHC represents a significant challenge for future detectors. A strategy to cope with high-pileup conditions is to add a fourth dimension to the measurements of the hits, by exploiting the time separation of the various proton–proton primary collisions. According to LHCb simulation studies, resolutions of about 10–20 picoseconds, at least an order of magnitude shorter than the average time span between primary interactions, would be greatly beneficial for the physics reach of the experiment. Microchannel plate (MCP) photomultipliers are compact devices capable of measuring the arrival time of charged particles with the required resolution. The technology of large-area picosecond photodetectors (LAPPDs) is under investigation to implement a timing layer that can be placed within a sampling calorimeter module with the purpose of measuring the arrival time of electromagnetic showers. LAPPD performances, using a Gen-I tile with a delay-line anode and a Gen-II with a capacitively coupled anode, have been measured thoroughly both with laser (wavelength of 405 nm and pulse width of 27.5 ps FWHM) and high-energy electron (1–5.8 GeV) beams. Time resolutions of the order of 30 ps for single photoelectrons and 15 ps for electromagnetic showers initiated by 5-GeV electrons, as measured at the shower maximum, are obtained.

Abstract

Three-body B+ -> p (p) over barK(+) and B+ -> p (p) over bar pi(+) decays are studied using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Evidence of CP violation in the B+ -> p (p) over barK(+) decay is found in regions of the phase space, representing the first measurement of this kind for a final state containing baryons. Measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry of the light meson in the p (p) over bar rest frame yield A(FB)(p (p) over barK(+), m(p (p) over bar) (1520)p is measured to be B(B+ -> (Lambda) over bar (1520)p) = (3.15 +/- 0.48 (stat) +/- 0.07 (syst) +/- 0.26 (BF)) x 10(-7), where BF denotes the uncertainty on secondary branching fractions.

Abstract

The lifetime of the $B_c^+$ meson is measured using semileptonic decays having a $J\!/\!\psi$ meson and a muon in the final state. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2\mathrm{~fb^{-1}}$, are collected by the LHCb detector in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $8\,\mathrm{TeV}$. The measured lifetime is $$\tau = 509 \pm 8 \pm 12 \mathrm{~fs},$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract

First evidence for $C P$ violation in two-body singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays of $D^0$ mesons reported by LHCb has recently aroused great interest in charm physics. In this document the latest measurements of $C P$ violation in the charm sector are discussed. LHCb and CDF results on time-integrated $C P$ asymmetries in $D^0 \to \pi^-\pi^+$ and $D^0 \to K^-K^+$ decays are presented in some detail. A search for $C P$ violation performed by Belle in other two-body decays, namely $D^0 \to K^0_S \pi^0$, $D^0 \to K^0_S \eta^{(\prime)}$, $D^+_{(s)} \to \phi \pi^+$ and $D^+ \to \pi^+ \eta^{(\prime)}$, is also presented. Abstract

A search for time-integrated CP violation in D0 -> h-h+ (h=K, pi) decays is presented using 0.62 fb^-1 of data collected by LHCb in 2011. The flavor of the charm meson is determined by the charge of the slow pion in the D*+ -> D0 pi+ and D*- -> D0bar pi- decay chains. The difference in CP asymmetry between D0 -> K-K+ and D0 -> pi-pi+, Delta ACP = ACP(K-K+) - ACP(pi-pi+), is measured to be [-0.82 \pm 0.21(stat.) \pm 0.11(syst.)]%. This differs from the hypothesis of CP conservation by 3.5 standard deviations.

Abstract

The production of View the MathML source mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.9 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The luminosity of the analysed sample is determined using a novel technique, involving measurements of the beam currents, sizes and positions, and is found to be 6.8±1.0 μb−1. Abstract

The LHCb experiment has almost completed its installation phase, and will soon enter the scene of B-Physics by bringing new key measurements to the search for New Physics effects in the flavour sector. Onthe onehandLHCb willimprovethe existing measurementsprovidedby theB-factories, in particular the angle, and on the other hand will provide new precise measurements peculiar to hadronic machines, such as the Bs mixing phase and the branching fraction of very rare decays like the $B_s$. $\mu^+, \mu^-$, i.e. in a sector unaccessible to the B-factories and where the Tevatron cannot make high precision measurements. In this paper first a summary of the LHCb performance on the most important measurements is recalled, then an estimate of their impact on CKM fits in the Standard Model and beyond is drawn.

Abstract

This report describes the optical transmitter boards and the Selection Crate, designed by the Bologna INFN-LHCb group, for the data transmission and the L0 calorimeter trigger of the LHCb experiment. The optical transmitters are used throughout the calorimeter system for data acquisition and the data transmission to the L0 trigger system. The optical transmitters allow transmitting 32 bit at the LHC clock of 40.08 MHz on a single fibre. The Selection Crate (SC) is used to select the most energetic deposits detected by the electromagnetic and the hadron calorimeters of LHCb, as well as to evaluate other auxiliary global trigger quantities (i.e. the total energy released and the hit multiplicity). The Selection Crate is a modular system equipped with homogeneous Selection Boards.
