SMXL proteins are a plant-specific clade of type I HSP100/Clp-ATPases.SMXLgenes are found in virtually all land plants’ genomes. However, they have mainly been studied in angiosperms. InArabidopsis thaliana, three SMXL functional subclades have been identified: SMAX1/SMXL2, SMXL345 and SMXL678. Out of these, two subclades ensure transduction on endogenous hormone signals: SMAX1/SMXL2 are involved in KAI2-ligand (KL) signaling, while SMXL678 are involved in strigolactones (SLs) signaling. Many questions remain regarding the mode of action of these proteins, as well as their ancestral role. In light of recent discoveries in the liverwortMarchantia polymorpha,we addressed this second question by investigating the function of the fourSMXLgenes of the mossPhyscomitrium patens.We demonstrate that PpSMXL proteins are negative regulators of growth, involved in the likely conserved ancestral MAX2-dependent KL signaling pathway. However, PpSMXL proteins expressed inArabidopsis thalianaunexpectedly cannot replace SMAX1/SMXL2 function in KL signaling, whereas they can functionally replace SMXL4/5 and restore root growth. Therefore, the molecular function of SMXL could be conserved, but not their interaction network. Moreover, one PpSMXL clade also positively regulates transduction of the SL signal inP. patens, this function most probably having an independent evolutionary origin to angiosperms SMXL678.

This red shifted fluorophore, that can be synthetised in gram scale, exhibits a large Stoke Shift and a fluorescence quantum yield up to 0.33. It is also characterized by a strong solvatochromic effect from green to red emission as well and can be used for bioimaging.

The 2'-substituents distinguish DNA from RNA nucleosides. 2'-O-methylation occurs naturally in RNA and plays important roles in biological processes. Such 2'-modifications may alter the hydrogen-bonding interactions of the nucleoside and thus may affect the conformations of the nucleoside in an RNA chain. Structures of the protonated 2'-O-methylated pyrimidine nucleosides were examined by infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) action spectroscopy, assisted by electronic structure calculations. The glycosidic bond stabilities of the protonated 2'-O-methylated pyrimidine nucleosides, [Nuom+H]+, were also examined and compared to their DNA and RNA nucleoside analogues via energy-resolved collision-induced dissociation (ER-CID). The preferred sites of protonation of the 2'-O-methylated pyrimidine nucleosides parallel their canonical DNA and RNA nucleoside analogues, [dNuo+H]+ and [Nuo+H]+, yet their nucleobase orientation and sugar puckering differ. The glycosidic bond stabilities of the protonated pyrimidine nucleosides follow the order: [dNuo+H]+ < [Nuo+H]+ < [Nuom+H]+. The slightly altered structures help explain the stabilization induced by 2'-O-methylation of the pyrimidine nucleosides.

Infrared multiple photon dissociation action spectroscopy was performed on the AlaOrn b(2)(+) and AlaAlaOrn b(3)(+) fragment ions from ornithine-containing tetrapeptides. Infrared spectra were obtained in the fingerprint region (1000 – 2000 cm(−1)) using the infrared free electron lasers at the Centre Laser Infrarouge d’Orsay (CLIO) facility in Orsay, France and the Free Electron Lasers for Infrared eXperiments (FELIX) facility in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. A novel terminal ornithine lactam AO(+) b2(+) structure was synthesized for experimental comparison and spectroscopy confirms that the b2(+) fragment ion from AOAA forms a lactam structure. Comparison of experimental spectra with scaled harmonic frequencies at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory shows that AO(+) b(2)(+) forms a terminal lactam protonated either on the lactam carbonyl oxygen or the N-terminal nitrogen atom. Several low-lying conformers of these isomers are likely populated following IRMPD dissociation. Similarly, a comparison of the experimental IRMPD spectrum with calculated spectra shows that AAO(+) b(3)(+)-ions also adopt a lactam structure, again with multiple different protonation sites, during fragmentation. This study provides spectroscopic confirmation for the lactam cyclization proposed for the “ornithine effect” and represents an alternative b(n)(+) structure to the oxazolone and diketopiperazine/macrocycle structures most often formed.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy are employed to probe [TM·(B12H12)]− and [TM·(B12H12)2]2– clusters [TM = Ag(I), Cu(I), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Cd(II)]. A comparison is made between the charge-transfer properties of the clusters containing the hydrogenated dodecaborate dianions, B12H122–, and the fluorinated analogues, B12F122–, for clusters containing Cd(II), Co(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II). IRMPD of the [TM·(B12H12)]− and [TM·(B12H12)2]2– species yields B12H11– via hydride abstraction and B12H12– in all cases. To further explore the IR-induced charge-transfer properties of the B12X122– (X = H, F) cages, mixed-cage [TM(B12H12)(B12F12)]2– [TM = Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Cd(II)] clusters were investigated. IRMPD of the mixed-cage species yielded appreciable amounts of B12F12– and B12H12– in most cases, indicating that charge-transfer to the central TM cation is a favorable process; formation of B12F12– is the dominant process for the Co(II...

International audience; The gas-phase structure of the protonated isomeric methyl uracils (1-Me-, 3-Me- and 6-Me-) was examined using mid‐infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy performed at CLIO, the Orsay (France) free electron laser facility. Experimental infrared spectra were recorded for protonated species generated by electrospray ionization, isolated and irradiated in a quadrupole ion trap, and compared to calculated infrared absorption spectra of the different low-lying isomers computed at the B3LYP/6-31++G(d,p) level of theory. For both protonated 1-Me-uracil and 6-Me-uracil, the global energy minima correspond to enolic tautomers, whose infrared absorption spectra were found to match very well with the experimental IRMPD spectra. A small fraction of another low energy lying keto tautomer is also present under electrospray conditions. Protonation of 3-Me-uracil by electrospray results exclusively in the formation of a keto form. 3-Me-uracil therefore constitutes a particular case in the series of pyrimidine nucleobases studied so far. Methylation of the N3 position of uracil prevents the interconversion between the keto and enol forms, as encountered for uracil and uracil methylated on N1, C5, or C6. These data also give new insights about the unimolecular reactivity of protonated uracils.

Infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy was performed on protonated and cationized canavanine (Cav), a non-protein amino acid oxy-analog of arginine. Infrared spectra in the XH stretching region (3000–4000 cm−1) were obtained at the Centre Laser Infrarouge d’Orsay (CLIO) facility. Comparison of the experimental infrared spectra with scaled harmonic frequencies at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory indicates that canavanine is in a canonical neutral form in CavH+, CavLi+, and CavNa+; therefore, these cations are charge-solvated structures. The infrared spectrum of CavK+ is consistent with a mixture of Cav in canonical and zwitterionic forms leading to both charge-solvated and salt-bridged cationic structures. The Cav moiety in CavCs+ is shown to be zwitterionic, forming a salt-bridged structure for the cation. Infrared spectra in the fingerprint region (1000–2000 cm−1) obtained at the FELIX Laboratory in Nijmegen, Netherlands support these assignments. These results show that a single oxygen atom substitution in the side chain reduces the stability of the zwitterion compared to that of the protein amino acid arginine (Arg), which has been shown previously to adopt a zwitterionic structure in ArgNa+ and ArgK+. This difference can be explained in part due to the decreased basicity of Cav (PA = 1001 kJ/mol) as compared to arginine (PA = 1051 kJ/mol), but not entirely, as lysine, which has nearly the same proton affinity as Cav, (∼993 kJ/mol) forms only canonical structures with Na+, K +, and Cs+. A major difference between the zwitterionic forms of ArgM+ and CavM+ is that the protonation site is on the side chain for Arg and on the N-terminus for Cav. This results in systematically weaker salt bridges in the Cav zwitterions. In addition, the presence of another hydrogen-bonding acceptor atom in the side chain contributes to the stability of the canonical structures for the smaller alkali cations.

Patients with residual hearing can benefit from cochlear implantation. However, insertion can damage cochlear structures and generate oxidative stress harmful to auditory cells. The antioxidant N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is a precursor of glutathione (GSH), a powerful endogenous antioxidant. NAC local delivery to the inner ear appeared promising to prevent damage after cochlear implantation in animals. NAC-loaded liposomal gel was specifically designed for transtympanic injection, performed both 3 days before and on the day of surgery. Hearing thresholds were recorded over 30 days in implanted guinea pigs with and without NAC. NAC, GSH, and their degradation products, N,N’-diacetyl-L-cystine (DiNAC) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) were simultaneously quantified in the perilymph over 15 days in non-implanted guinea pigs. For the first time, endogenous concentrations of GSH and GSSG were determined in the perilymph. Although NAC-loaded liposomal gel sustained NAC release in the perilymph over 15 days, it induced hearing loss in both implanted and non-implanted groups with no perilymphatic GSH increase. Under physiological conditions, NAC appeared poorly stable within liposomes. As DiNAC was quantified at concentrations which were twice as high as NAC in the perilymph, it was hypothesized that DiNAC could be responsible for the adverse effects on hearing.

A heteroditopic ligand associated with a calix[6]arene scaffold bearing a tris(imidazole) coordinating site at its small rim and an amine/pyridine ligand at its large rim has been prepared, and its regioselective coordination to ZnII at the small rim and FeII in the amine/pyridine ligand has been achieved. The heterodinuclear complex obtained displays an overall cone conformation capped by the tris(imidazole)ZnII moiety and bears a non-heme FeII complex at its base. Each of the metal centers exhibits one labile position, allowing the coordination inside the cavity of a guest alkylamine at ZnII and the generation of reaction intermediates (FeIII (OOH) and FeIV O) at the large rim. A dependence between the chain length of the encapsulated alkylamine and the distribution of FeIII (OOH) intermediates and FeIII (OMe) is observed. In addition, it is shown that the generation of the FeIV O intermediate is enhanced by addition of the alkylamine guest. Hence, this supramolecular system gathers the three levels of reactivity control encountered in oxidoreductases: i) control of the FeII redox properties through its first coordination sphere, allowing us to generate high valent reactive species; ii) control of guest binding through a hydrophobic funnel that drives its alkyl chain next to the reactive iron complex, thus mimicking the binding pocket of natural systems; iii) guest-modulated reactivity of the FeII center towards oxidants.

Clusters of all-cis 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexafluorocyclohexane and the dodecafluorododecaboron dianion, [C6F6H6]n[B12F12]2– (n = 0–4), are investigated in a combined experimental and computational study. DFT calculations and IRMPD spectra in the region of 800–2000 cm–1 indicate that C6H6F6 binds to open trigonal faces of B12F122– via a three-point interlocking binding motif. Calculated binding interactions reveal substantial contributions from C–H···F hydrogen bonding and binding energies that are among the strongest observed for a neutral-anion system.

Infrared multiple photon dissociation spectra of the proton-bound heterodimers of phenylalanine/glycine (Phe·H + ·Gly) and pentafluorophenylalanine/glycine (F 5 -Phe·H + ·Gly) have been acquired in the 975–1975 cm −1 region. Exhaustive basin hopping molecular dynamics searches and subsequent DFT calculations predict four low energy intermolecular binding motifs. The spectrum of F 5 -Phe·H + ·Gly is assigned predominantly to isomers exhibiting a N H + ⋯O intermolecular interaction between nitrogen-protonated Gly and the carbonyl oxygen atom of F 5 -Phe. In contrast, the spectrum Phe·H + ·Gly is found to consist of a mixture of isomers exhibiting the N H + ⋯O between nitrogen-protonated Gly and the carbonyl oxygen of neutral Phe, and isomers exhibiting a N H + ⋯N interaction between nitrogen-protonated Phe and the neutral Gly moiety. Cation-π effects also seem to influence the cluster geometries, especially in the case of the Phe·H + ·Gly global minimum structure where the phenyl ring orients with the site of protonation so as to maximize charge-quadrupole interactions.

The formation and investigation of sulfur-based cysteine radicals cationized by a group 1A metal ion or Ag+ in the gas phase are reported. Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions (IMR) and infrared multiple-photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy revealed that the Li+ , Na+ , and K+ adducts of the cysteine radical remain S-based radicals as initially formed. Theoretical calculations for the three alkali metal ions found that the lowest-energy isomers are Cα -based radicals, but they are not observed experimentally owing to the barriers associated with the hydrogen-atom transfer. A mechanism for the S-to-Cα radical rearrangement in the metal ion complexes was proposed, and the relative energies of the associated energy barriers were found to be Li+ >Na+ >K+ at all levels of theory. Relative to the B3LYP functional, other levels of calculation gave significantly higher barriers (by 35-40 kJ mol-1 at MP2 and 44-47 kJ mol-1 at the CCSD level) using the same basis set. Unlike the alkali metal adducts, the cysteine radical/Ag+ complex rearranged from the S-based radical to an unreactive species as indicated by IMRs and IRMPD spectroscopy. This is consistent with the Ag+ /cysteine radical complex having a lower S-to-Cα radical conversion barrier, as predicted by the MP2 and CCSD levels of theory.

Intrinsic properties of pantothenic acid, an essential nutraceutical, are examined. The effect of protonation on the energetic and geometric features of pantothenic acid, generated as gaseous protonated species, are investigated by infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy over an extended frequency range (800–2000 cm−1 and 2800–3700 cm−1). DFT calculations are exploited to identify the possible structures and predict the absorption spectra at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. Two amide-protonated structures, characterized by the most stable binding motifs, account well for the experimental spectrum, thus revealing structurally diagnostic features of potential benefit for the development of highly sensitive and selective nutrient screening.

An l-proline based catalyst with a charged phenyl-pyridium substituent (1) was used to analyze intermediates of an organocatalyzed aldol reaction by infrared multi-photon dissociation (IRMPD) mass spectrometry after transfer into the gas phase via electrospray ionization (ESI). IRMPD spectra were interpreted with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) computations. A structurally restricted enamine species was used as a reference molecule for the calculated vibrational frequencies. A close correlation between theory and experiment was found for the energetically most favoured oxazolidinone structures.

International audience; The chemical difference between DNA and RNA nucleosides is their 2′-hydrogen versus 2′-hydroxyl substituents. Modification of the ribosyl moiety at the 2′-position and 2′-O-methylation in particular, is common among natural post-transcriptional modifications of RNA. 2′-Modification may alter the electronic properties and hydrogen-bonding characteristics of the nucleoside and thus may lead to enhanced stabilization or malfunction. The structures and relative glycosidic bond stabilities of the protonated forms of the 2′-O-methylated purine nucleosides, 2′-O-methyladenosine (Adom) and 2′-O-methylguanosine (Guom), were examined using two complementary tandem mass spectrometry approaches, infrared multiple photon dissociation action spectroscopy and energy-resolved collision-induced dissociation. Theoretical calculations were also performed to predict the structures and relative stabilities of stable low-energy conformations of the protonated forms of the 2′-O-methylated purine nucleosides and their infrared spectra in the gas phase. Low-energy conformations highly parallel to those found for the protonated forms of the canonical DNA and RNA purine nucleosides are also found for the protonated 2′-O-methylated purine nucleosides. Importantly, the preferred site of protonation, nucleobase orientation, and sugar puckering are preserved among the DNA, RNA, and 2′-O-methylated variants of the protonated purine nucleosides. The 2′-substituent does however influence hydrogen-bond stabilization as the 2′-O-methyl and 2′-hydroxyl substituents enable a hydrogen-bonding interaction between the 2′- and 3′-substituents, whereas a 2′-hydrogen atom does not. Further, 2′-O-methylation reduces the number of stable low-energy hydrogen-bonded conformations possible and importantly inverts the preferred polarity of this interaction versus that of the RNA analogues. Trends in the CID50% values extracted from survival yield analyses of the 2′-O-methylated and canonical DNA and RNA forms of the protonated purine nucleosides are employed to elucidate their relative glycosidic bond stabilities. The glycosidic bond stability of Adom is found to exceed that of its DNA and RNA analogues. The glycosidic bond stability of Guom is also found to exceed that of its DNA analogue; however, this modification weakens this bond relative to its RNA counterpart. The glycosidic bond stability of the protonated purine nucleosides appears to be correlated with the hydrogen-bond stabilization of the sugar moiety.

A combination of infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations is used to investigate the structures and charge-transfer properties of clusters containing transition metals (TM = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(I), Zn(II), Rh(III), Pd(II), Ag(I), Cd(II)) and the dodecafluorododecaboron dianion, B12F122–. In all cases, IRMPD resulted in transfer of electron density to the metal center and production of B12F12–. Metals that exhibit the highest degree of charge transfer are found to induce reaction among the B12F12 cages, leading to production of BnFm (up to n = m = 24).

A combined computational and infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopic investigation shows that protonated d-(+)-biotin, formed in the gas phase by ESI-MS, acquires a folded structure with proton bonding between the ureido and valeryl carbonyls, and that only a single conformer of such a structure predominates. A uniform frequency vs distance correlation function is proposed for the O(+)-H···O and N-H···O bonds involved in the folded conformers of O2'-protonated d-(+)-biotin in the gas phase which, therefore, depends exclusively on the corresponding geometric parameters.

It is generally assumed that molecules behave ergodically during chemical reactions, that is, reactivities depend only on the total energy content and not on the initial state of the molecule. While there are a few examples of nonergodic behavior in small (usually electronically excited) species, to date there have been no reports of such behavior in larger covalently bound species composed of several tens of atoms. Here, we demonstrate vibrational mode-selective behavior in a series of palladium catalysts. When we excite solvent-tagged gas-phase Pd catalysts with an infrared laser that is tuned to be resonant with specific molecular vibrations, depending on which vibration we excite, we can select different reaction pathways. We also demonstrate that this behavior can be “turned off” via chemical substitution.

The structure of a protonated diketopiperazine dipeptide, cyclo-diphenylalanine, is studied by means of infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy combined with quantum chemical calculations. Protonation exclusively occurs on the oxygen site and, in the most stable conformer, results to an intramolecular OH···π interaction, accompanied by a CH···π interaction. Higher-energy conformers with free OH and NH···π interactions are observed as well, due to kinetic trapping. Optimization of the intramolecular interactions involving the aromatic ring dictates the geometry of the benzyl substituents. Changing the chirality of one of the residues has consequences on the CH···π interaction, which is of CαH···π nature for LD, while LL shows a CβH···π interaction. Higher-energy conformers also display some differences in the nature of the intramolecular interactions.

Infrared multiple-photon dissociation (IRMPD) action spectroscopy was performed on the b2 + fragment ion from the protonated PPG tripeptide. Comparison of the experimental infrared spectrum with computed spectra for both oxazolone and diketopiperazine structures indicates that the majority of the fragment ion population has an oxazolone structure with the remainder having a diketopiperazine structure. This result is in contrast with a recent study of the IRMPD action spectrum of the PP b2 + fragment ion from PPP, which was found to be nearly 100% diketopiperazine (Martens et al. Int. J. Mass Spectrom. 2015, 377, 179). The diketopiperazine b2 + ion is thermodynamically more stable than the oxazolone but normally requires a trans/cis peptide bond isomerization in the dissociating peptide. Martens et al. showed through IRMPD action spectroscopy that the PPP precursor ion was in a conformation in which the first peptide bond is already in the cis conformation and thus it was energetically favorable to form the thermodynamically-favored diketopiperazine b2 + ion. In the present case, solution-phase NMR spectroscopy and gas-phase IRMPD action spectroscopy show that the PPGprecursor ion has its first amide bond in a trans configuration suggesting that the third residue is playing an important role in both the structure of the peptide and the associated ring-closure barriers for oxazolone and diketopiperazine formation.

The radical cation of cytosine (Cyt.+ ) is generated by dissociative oxidation from a ternary CuII complex in the gas phase. The radical cation is characterized by infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy in the fingerprint region, UV/Vis photodissociation (UVPD) spectroscopy, ion-molecule reactions, and theoretical calculations (density functional theory and ab initio). The experimental IRMPD spectrum features diagnostic bands for two enol-amino and two keto-amino tautomers of Cyt.+ that are calculated to be among the lowest energy isomers, in agreement with a previous study. Although the UVPD action spectrum can also be matched to a combination of the four lowest energy tautomers, the presence of a nonclassical distonic radical cation cannot be ruled out. Its formation is, however, unlikely due to the high energy of this isomer and the respective ternary CuII complex. Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions showed that Cyt.+ undergoes hydrogen-atom abstraction from 1-propanethiol, radical recombination reactions with nitric oxide, and electron transfer from dimethyl disulfide.

International audience; This work aims to improve the computation of infrared spectra of gas-phase cations using DFT methods. Experimental IRMPD spectra for ten Zn and Ru organometallic complexes have been used to provide reference data for 64 vibrational modes in the 900-2000 cm-1 range. The accuracy of the IR vibrational frequencies predicted for these bands has been assessed over five DFT functionals and three basis sets. The functionals include the popular B3LYP and M06-2X hydrids and the range-separated hybrids (RSH) CAM-B3LYP, LC-BLYP and B97X-D. B3LYP gives the best mean absolute error (MAE) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) values of 7.1 and 9.6 cm-1 , whilst the best RSH functional, B97X-D, gives 12.8 and 16.6 cm-1 respectively. Using linear correlations instead of scaling factors improves the prediction accuracy significantly for all functionals. Experimental and computed spectra for a single complex can show significant differences even when the molecular structure is calculated correctly, and a means of defining confidence limits for any given computed structure is also provided.

International audience; The deleterious cellular effects of ionizing radiation are well-known, but the mechanisms causing DNA damage are poorly understood. The accepted molecular events involve initial oxidation and deprotonation at guanine sites, triggering hydrogen atom abstraction reactions from the sugar moieties, causing DNA strand breaks. Probing the chemistry of the initially formed radical cation has been challenging. Here, we generate, spectroscopically characterize, and examine the reactivity of the Watson–Crick nucleobase pair radical cation in the gas phase. We observe rich chemistry, including proton transfer between the bases and propagation of the radical site in deoxyguanosine from the base to the sugar, thus rupturing the sugar. This first example of a gas-phase model system providing molecular-level details on the chemistry of an ionized DNA base pair paves the way toward a more complete understanding of molecular processes induced by radiation. It also highlights the role of radical propagation in chemistry, biology, and nanotechnology.

The structures and properties of a series of phenylalanine (Phe) derivatives have been investigated in a joint computational and experimental infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) study. IRMPD spectra in the 1000–2000 cm−1 region show that protonation is localized on the amine group in all cases. Intramolecular cation–π interactions between the ammonium group and the phenyl ring heavily influence molecular geometries and properties such as gas phase basicity and proton affinity. By varying substituents on the phenyl ring, one can sensitively tune the cation–π interaction and, therefore, the molecular structure and properties. Variations in molecular structures and properties as a function of phenyl ring substitution are shown to correlate with substituent Hammett parameters.

Hypercoordinated complexes involving tricarbastannatrane cation [N(CH2CH2CH2)3Sn]+ with various Lewis bases are investigated in the gas and solution phases using a combination of infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Coordination is found to occur at the apical position leading to a pentacoordinated Sn center. Strongly electron donating Lewis bases disrupt the N···Sn transannular interaction and induce higher degrees of geometric distortion at the metal center than weakly donating Lewis bases, an effect that manifests as anharmonic shifts in the vibrational spectra. Once characterized in the gas phase, [N(CH2CH2CH2)3Sn(Lewis base)]+ structures were embedded in a dichloroethane polarizable continuum model to investigate solution phase properties. Experiments have been carried out in which electrospray ionization has been used to generate ionic complexes of all-cis 1,2,3,4,5,6 hexafluorocyclohexane. These complexes were subsequently mass isolated in a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer and then irradiated by the tunable infrared output of a free electron laser in the 800-1600 cm−1 range. From the frequency dependence of the fragmentation of the complexes, vibrational signatures of the complexes were obtained. Computational work carried out in parallel reveals that the complexes formed are very strongly bound and are among the most strongly bound complexes of Na+ and Cl− ever observed with molecular species. The dipole moment calculated for the heaxafluorocyclohexane is very large (~7 D) and it appears that the bonding in each of the complexes has a significant electrostatic contribution. Postprint

IRMPD spectroscopy in the ‘fingerprint’ and X H (X = C, N, O) stretching regions was used to probe the structures of the YG a 2 ions generated from protonated YGGFL and doubly protonated YGGFLR. Our experiments indicate a mixture of cyclic and rearranged ‘imine–amide’ structures. The cyclic isomer is generated from the initially formed protonated imine terminated linear structure by head-to-tail cyclization. Proton transfer between the secondary amine of the ring and the amide nitrogen followed by ring opening leads to the rearranged ‘imine–amide’ isomer. Quantum chemical calculations demonstrate that this proton transfer is catalyzed by the tyrosine side chain ring for the YG a 2 ion. Isomer specific IRMPD bands observed in the two spectral regions clearly show the presence of the cyclic and rearranged ‘imine–amide’ isomers, the latter being characterized by an IR signature at ∼3545 cm −1 associated with the C-terminal amide NH 2 asymmetric stretch.

The complexation abilities of 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) and 2,2'-bipyridyl-N,N'-dioxide (bipydiox) toward zinc(II) and the influence of these ligands on the properties and reactivities of the investigated complexes are compared by means of mass spectrometry, IR multiphoton dissociation spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. The binding energy of bipydiox to zinc is slightly smaller than that of bipy, namely, by 0.1 eV in the mixed complex [(bipy)(bipydiox)ZnCl](+). Accordingly, the differences in the properties and reactivities of the complexes of zinc(II)/bipydiox and zinc(II)/bipy are only minor. The mechanism of decarboxylation of [(L)Zn(CH(3)COO)](+) (L = bipy or bipydiox) is investigated in detail. The substantial difference between the ligands stems only from the possibility of oxygen transfer from bipydiox, which is here, however, observed only as a high-energy channel in the fragmentation of complexes [(bipydiox)Zn(CH(3)COO)](+).

Selected series of terminally protected model peptides to the hexamer level, based on four novel, crown-ether containing Cα-methyl-L-DOPA (L-Mdp) amino acid residues, namely L-Mdp[15-C-5], L-Mdp[18-C-6], L-Mdp[benzo-24-C-8] and L-Mdp[(S)-Binol-20-C-6], combined with either L-Ala or L-Ala/Aib or Gly/Aib, were synthesized by solution methods. An ESI-MS analysis of their alkali metal cation complexation ability was carried out. Their FTIR absorption, 1H NMR, ECD, and VCD spectroscopic properties suggest that all of these crowned amino acids are strong inducers of (left-handed) β-turns and 310-helical structures.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. International audience; Lasso peptides are natural products characterized by a mechanically interlocked topology. The conformation of lasso peptides has been probed in the gas phase using ion mobility–mass spectrometry (IM–MS) which showed differences in the lasso and their unthreaded branched-cyclic topoisomers depending on the ion charge states. To further characterize the evolution of gas phase conformations as a function of the charge state and to assess associated changes in the hydrogen bond network, infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) action spectroscopy was carried out on two representative lasso peptides, microcin J25 (MccJ25) and capistruin, and their branched-cyclic topoisomers. For the branched-cyclic topoisomers, spectroscopic evidence of a disruption of neutral hydrogen bonds were found when comparing the 3+ and 4+ charge states. In contrast, for the lasso peptides, the IRMPD spectra were found to be similar for the two charge states, suggesting very little difference in gas phase conformations upon addition of a proton. The IRMPD data were thus found consistent and complementary to IM–MS, confirming the stable and compact structure of lasso peptides in the gas phase.

A combination of infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations have been employed to study the structures and mode-specific dissociation pathways of the proton-bound dimer of 3-trifluoromethylphenylalanine (3-CF3-Phe) and trimethylamine (TMA). Three structural motifs are identified: canonical (charge-solvated), zwitterionic (charge-separated), and TMA-bridged. In the 1000-1350 cm(-1) region, similar spectra are observed in the TMA·H(+) and 3-CF3-Phe·H(+) product channels. At wavenumbers above 1350 cm(-1), infrared excitation of charge-solvated structures leads exclusively to production of protonated TMA, while excitation of zwitterionic or TMA-bridged structures results exclusively in production of protonated 3-CF3-Phe. The cluster potential energy landscape is topologically mapped and mechanisms for isomerization and mode-selective dissociation are proposed. In particular, cluster transparency as a result of IR-induced isomerization is implicated in deactivation of some IRMPD channels.

A metastable protonated cinchona alkaloid was produced in the gas phase by UV-induced photodissociation (UVPD) of its protonated dimer in a Paul ion trap. The infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectrum of the molecular ion formed by UVPD was obtained and compared to DFT calculations to characterize its structure. The protonation site obtained thereby is not accessible by classical protonation ways. The protonated monomer directly formed in the ESI source or by collision-induced dissociation (CID) of the dimer undergoes protonation at the most basic alkaloid nitrogen. In contrast, protonation occurs at the quinoline aromatic ring nitrogen in the UVPD-formed monomer.

The gas-phase structures of cytosine–Ag+ [CAg]+ and cytosine–Ag+–H2O [CAg–H2O]+ complexes have been studied by mass-selected infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy in the 900–1800 cm−1 spectral region using the Free Electron Laser facility in Orsay (CLIO). The IRMPD experimental spectra have been compared with the calculated IR absorption spectra of the different low-lying isomers (computed at the DFT level using the B3LYP functional and the 6-311G++(d,p) basis set for C, H, N and O atoms and the Stuttgart effective core potential for Ag). For the [CAg]+ complex, only one isomer with cytosine in the keto-amino (KA) tautomeric form and Ag+ interacting simultaneously with the C(2)[double bond, length as m-dash]O(7) group and N(3) of cytosine was observed. However, the mono-hydration of the complex in the gas phase leads to the stabilization of a two quasi-isoenergetic structure of the [CAg–H2O]+ complex, in which Ag+ interacts with the O atom of the water molecule and with the N(3) or C(2)[double bond, length as m-dash]O(7) group of cytosine. The relative populations of the two isomers determined from the IRMPD kinetics plot are in good agreement with the calculated values. Comparison of these results with those of protonated cytosine [CH]+ and its mono-hydrated complex [CH–H2O]+ shows some interesting differences between H+ and Ag+. In particular, while a single water molecule catalyzes the isomerization reaction in the case of [CH–H2O]+, it is found that in the case of [CAg–H2O]+ the addition of water leads to the stabilization of two isomers separated by small energy barrier (0.05 eV). Diethyl carbonate and dimethyl carbonate are prototype examples of eco-friendly solvents used in lithium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, their degradation products affect both the battery performance and its safety. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to understand the reaction mechanisms involved in the ageing processes. Among those, redox processes are likely to play a critical role. Here we show that radiolysis is an ideal tool to generate the electrolytes degradation products. The major gases detected after irradiation (H2, CH4, C2H6, CO and CO2) are identified and quantified. Moreover, the chemical compounds formed in the liquid phase are characterized by different mass spectrometry techniques. Reaction mechanisms are then proposed. The detected products are consistent with those of the cycling of Li-based cells. This demonstrates that radiolysis is a versatile and very helpful tool to better understand the phenomena occurring in lithium-ion batteries., The degradation of organic solvents used in lithium-ion batteries reduces battery performance. Here, the authors present a radiolysis technique which is not only more efficient than conventional thermally activated ageing methods, but also allows mechanistic analysis of the degradation process.

Differential Ion Mobility Spectrometry (DIMS) provides orthogonal separation to mass spectrometry, and DIMS combined with the high sensitivity of a quadrupole ion-trap is shown to be useful for the separation and identification of saccharides. A comprehensive analysis of the separation of anomers (α- and β-methylated glucose) and epimers (α-methylated glucose and mannose) ionized with Li(+), Na(+), and K(+) is performed. DIMS separation is found to be better for saccharides cationized with the two latter species. The corresponding resolving power for the two glucose anomers with Na(+) is found to be very close to the corresponding drift-tube IMS value. The lithiated complexes are investigated further using a combination of infrared spectroscopy integrated to ion-trap mass spectrometry and quantum chemical calculations. Together with DIMS, consistent results are obtained. It is found that two competing structural motifs might be at play, depending on the subtle balance between the maximization of the coordination of the metal cation and the intrinsic conformational energetics of the saccharide, which is for a large part driven by hydrogen bonding. The comparison of simulated and observed spectra clearly shows that a band at ∼3400 cm(-1) is specific to a structural motif found in the lithiated glucose complexes, which could explain the trends observed in the DIMS spectra of the saccharide complexes. It is shown that DIMS-MS/MS using wavelength specific IR activation would provide a new orthogonal dimension to mass spectrometry.

The monitoring by UV spectroscopy of the Pd-catalyzed hydrogenolysis in acetonitrile of 2-methyl-2-benzyloxycarbonyl-1-indanone and 2-methyl-2-benzyloxycarbonyl-1-tetralone showed the successive formation of corresponding beta-ketoacids and enols to deliver finally the ketones. Some factors which influence the stability of the intermediates are determined. In contrast to the above benzyl beta-ketoesters, the enol was not detected from benzyl (2-methylinden-3-yl) carbonate.

International audience; Guanine radical cations are formed upon oxidation of DNA. Deoxyguanosine (dG) is used as a model, and the gas-phase infrared (IR) spectroscopic signature and gas-phase unimolecular and bimolecular chemistry of its radical cation, dG˙+, A, which is formed via direct electrospray ionisation (ESI/MS) of a methanolic solution of Cu(NO3)2 and dG, are examined. Quantum chemistry calculations have been carried out on 28 isomers and comparisons between their calculated IR spectra and the experimentally-measured spectra suggest that A exists as the ground-state keto tautomer. Collision-induced dissociation (CID) of A proceeds via cleavage of the glycosidic bond, while its ion–molecule reactions with amine bases occur via a number of pathways including hydrogen-atom abstraction, proton transfer and adduct formation. A hidden channel, involving isomerisation of the radical cation via adduct formation, is revealed through the use of two stages of CID, with the final stage of CID showing the loss of CH2O as a major fragmentation pathway from the reformed radical cation, dG˙+. Quantum chemistry calculations on the unimolecular and bimolecular reactivity are also consistent with A being present as a ground-state keto tautomer.

Zinc complexes containing diazafluorenone ligands have been studied and the localisation of the single electron on the metal atom in the mono-ligated complex has been demonstrated.

The study of metal ion-DNA interaction aiming to understand the stabilization of artificial base pairing and a number of noncanonical motifs is of current interest, due to their potential exploitation in developing new technological devices and expanding the genetic code. A successful strategy has been the synthesis of metal-mediated base pairs, in which a coordinative bond to a central metal cation replaces a H-bond in a natural pair. Although very often cited in publications dealing with food products, electronic noses still pose many problems. One is the extraction of features from the response curve; in general, only the adsorption maximum is retained and input into a classification system. This paper describes a statistic-based methodology developed to extract the most pertinent features from the outputs of SnO2-gas sensor array. Several features are extracted from each sensor curve and also from its primary and secondary derivatives. They are then sorted, taking into account three specific indexes, designed to describe the repeatability, discrimination power and their redundancy. To generalise this approach, the acquisitions are carried out using various operating conditions. This protocol is applied to a set of model mixtures, representing wine with satisfactory and unsatisfactory tart or vinegar flavour. This paper shows that relevant information can be obtained from the curve maximum, but also from features related to derivatives. Moreover, the most efficient features are the same for the five sensors, which would seem to indicate that they should also be the most suitable ones for all SnO2 sensors.
