The Integration and Verification Testing and characterization of the expected performance of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) Camera is described. The LSST Camera will be the largest astronomical camera ever constructed, featuring a 3.2 Gpixel focal plane mosaic of 189 CCDs. In this paper, we describe the verification testing program developed in parallel with the integration of the Camera, and the results from our performance characterization of the Camera. Our testing program includes electro-optical characterization and CCD height measurements of the focal plane, at several steps during integration, as well as a complete functional and characterization program for the finished focal plane. It also includes a suite of functional tests of the major Camera mechanisms: shutter, filter exchange system and thermal control. Finally, we expect to test the fully assembled Camera prior to its scheduled completion and delivery to the LSST observatory in early calendar 2021.

We present the final design, environmental testing, and launch history of MiniCarb, a 6U CubeSat developed through a partnership between NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. MiniCarb’s science payload, developed at Goddard, was an occultation-viewing, passive laser heterodyne radiometer for observing methane, carbon dioxide, and water vapor in Earth’s atmosphere at ∼1.6 µm s−1. MiniCarb’s satellite, developed at Livermore, implemented their CubeSat Next Generation Bus plug-and-play architecture to produce a modular platform that could be tailored to a range of science payloads. Following the launch on 5 December 2019, MiniCarb traveled to the International Space Station and was set into orbit on 1 February 2020 via Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus capsule which deployed MiniCarb with tipoff rotation of about 20° s−1 (significantly higher than the typical rate of 3° s−1 from prior CubeSats), from which the attitude control system was unable to recover resulting in a loss of power. In spite of this early failure, MiniCarb had many successes including rigorous environmental testing, successful deployment of its solar panels, and a successful test of the radio and communication through the Iridium network. This prior work and enticing cost (approximately $2 M for the satellite and $250 K for the payload) makes MiniCarb an ideal candidate for a low-cost and rapid rebuild as a single orbiter or constellation to globally observe key greenhouse gases.

(Abridged) We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). A vast array of science will be enabled by a single wide-deep-fast sky survey, and LSST will have unique survey capability in the faint time domain. The LSST design is driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking an inventory of the Solar System, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a wide-field ground-based system sited at Cerro Pach\'{o}n in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg$^2$ field of view, and a 3.2 Gigapixel camera. The standard observing sequence will consist of pairs of 15-second exposures in a given field, with two such visits in each pointing in a given night. With these repeats, the LSST system is capable of imaging about 10,000 square degrees of sky in a single filter in three nights. The typical 5$\sigma$ point-source depth in a single visit in $r$ will be $\sim 24.5$ (AB). The project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations by 2022. Medium to large channel count detectors are usually faced with a few unattractive options for data acquisition (DAQ). Small to medium-sized TPC experiments, for example, are too small to justify the expense and development time of application specific integrated circuits (ASIC). Commercial rack mounted electronics are too bulky and expensive for large channel counts. The combination of commercial high-speed high-density FPGAs, ADCs, and small discrete components provides another option that scales to tens of thousands of channels and is only slightly larger than ASICs using off-the-shelf components. A working example of this alternative solution is presented.

We have designed and constructed an 8-channel digital signal processing board for the GRETINA spectrometer. The digitizer samples each of 8 inputs at 100 MHz with 12-bit resolution. Employing a large on-board FPGA, the board derives an energy, leading-edge time, and constant-fraction time from the input signal providing the functionality of a conventional analog electronics system. Readout and control of the digitizer is done over a VME bus. The digitizer's performance met all requirements for processing signals from the GRETINA spectrometer.

Actual or surrogate chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive materials and illicit drug precursors can be rapidly detected and identified when in aerosol form by a Single-Particle Aerosol Mass Spectrometry (SPAMS) system. This entails not only the sampling of such particles but also the physical analysis and subsequent data analysis leading to a highly reliable alarm state. SPAMS hardware is briefly reviewed. SPAMS software algorithms are discussed in greater detail. A laboratory experiment involving actual threat and surrogate releases mixed with ambient background aerosols demonstrates broad-spectrum detection within seconds. Data from a field test at the San Francisco International Airport demonstrate extended field operation with an ultralow false alarm rate. Together these data sets demonstrate a significant and important advance in rapid aerosol threat detection.

An in situ method to image individual aerosol particles upon desorption/ionization in a single particle aerosol mass spectrometer using shadowgraph imaging is presented and applied directly to determine a 2D spatial distribution of 5.0 μ m particles. This new technique is complementary to previously reported methods for the determination of focused particle beam profiles and has several advantages, including a very low particle concentration requirement and the ability to collect the image of an individual particle with a correlated mass spectrum. Images are presented for 1.3, 2.1, 3.0, and 5.0 μ m polystyrene latex spheres. Particle beam profiles are presented in the directions perpendicular and parallel to the particle beam axis. These results are qualitatively compared to those of a complementary particle collection method (dusting) used at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to characterize aerosol beam focusing.

Bioearosol mass spectrometry (BAMS) analyzes single particles in real time from ambient air, placing strict demands on instrument sensitivity. Modeling of the BAMS reflectron time of flight (TOF) with SIMION revealed design limitations associated with ion transmission and instrument sensitivity at higher masses. Design and implementation of a BAMS linear TOF with electrostatic ion guide and delayed extraction capabilities has greatly increased the sensitivity and mass range relative to the reflectron design. Initial experimental assessment of the new instrument design revealed improved sensitivity at high masses as illustrated when using standard particles of cytochrome C (m/z approximately 12,000), from which the compound's monomer, dimer (m/z approximately 24,000) and trimer (m/z approximately 36,000) were readily detected.

Bioaerosol mass spectrometry (BAMS) performs single-cell analysis in real time. However, the specificity of BAMS mass signatures has been limited by low sensitivity at high masses. To increase the mass range and sensitivity of BAMS, a novel design was developed that utilizes a linear flight tube with delayed extraction and an electrostatic ion guide. This study quantifies the sensitivity limits of the novel BAMS design and evaluates the feasibility of BAMS to detect higher mass biomarkers from single cells. All experiments were carried out using MALDI aerosol particles that were nebulized from solution. Sensitivity was assessed by generating particles with decreasing amounts of analyte via serial dilutions. The amount of analyte contained within each particle was calculated based on particle size, density, and molarity of the analyte within solution. A variety of biomolecular ions were studied and signals obtained from particles containing 300 zmol of maltopentaose, 132 zmol of alpha-cyclodextrin, and 14 zmol (approximately 8400 molecules) of gramicidin S are reported. The detection of 14 zmol of gramicidin S is to the best of our knowledge a record in sensitivity for MALDI TOF-MS.

A novel segmented multigap pressurized gas ionization chamber is being developed for optimization of the luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The ionization chambers are to be installed in the front quadrupole and 0/spl deg/ neutral particle absorbers in the high luminosity interaction regions (IRs) and sample the energy deposited near the maxima of the hadronic/electromagnetic showers in these absorbers. The ionization chambers are instrumented with low noise, fast pulse-shaping electronics to be capable of resolving individual bunch crossings at 40 MHz. In this paper, we report the initial results of our second test of this instrumentation in a super proton synchrotron (SPS) external proton beam. Single 300 GeV protons are used to simulate the hadronic/electromagnetic showers produced by the forward collision products from the interaction regions of the LHC. The capability of instrumentation to measure the luminosity of individual bunches in a 40 MHz bunch train is demonstrated.

A high-throughput pulse height analyzer system for synchrotron-based applications requiring high resolution, high processing speed, and low dead-time has been developed. The system is composed of a 120 ns 12-bit nuclear quality analog-to-digital converter with a self-adaptive fast peak detector stretcher and a custom-made fast histogramming memory module that records and processes the digitized data. The histogramming module is packaged in a VME/VXI compatible interface. Data is transferred through a fast optical link from the memory interface to a computer. A dedicated data acquisition program matches the hardware characteristics of the histogramming memory module. The data acquisition system allows for different data collection modes. The system can acquire data in synchronization with an external trigger or operate as a standard pulse-height analyzer. Acquisition can be performed on several channels simultaneously. A two-channel prototype has been demonstrated at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory accelerator in conjunction with a fluorescence X-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy experiment. A detailed description of the entire system is given and experimental data shown.

We present a design for a 4U (20 cm × 20 cm × 10 cm) occultation-viewing laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR) that measures methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O) in the limb that is designed for deployment on a 6U CubeSat. The LHR design collects sunlight that has undergone absorption by the trace gas and mixes it with a distributive feedback (DFB) laser centered at 1640nm that scans across CO2, CH4, and H2O absorption features. Upper troposphere/lower stratosphere measurements of these gases provide key inputs to stratospheric circulation models: measuring stratospheric circulation and its variability is essential for projecting how climate change will affect stratospheric ozone.

The LSST Camera science sensor array will incorporate 189 large format Charge Coupled Device (CCD) image sensors. Each CCD will include over 16 million pixels and will be divided into 16 equally sized segments and each segment will be read through a separate output amplifier. The science goals of the project require CCD sensors with state of the art performance in many aspects. The broad survey wavelength coverage requires fully depleted, 100 micrometer thick, high resistivity, bulk silicon as the imager substrate. Image quality requirements place strict limits on the image degradation that may be caused by sensor effects: optical, electronic, and mechanical. In this paper we discuss the design of the prototype sensors, the hardware and software that has been used to perform electro-optic testing of the sensors, and a selection of the results of the testing to date. The architectural features that lead to internal electrostatic fields, the various effects on charge collection and transport that are caused by them, including charge diffusion and redistribution, effects on delivered PSF, and potential impacts on delivered science data quality are addressed.

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope instrument include four guiding and wavefront sensing subsystems called corner raft subsystems, in addition to the main science array of 189 4K x 4K CCDs. These four subsystems are placed at the four corners of the instrumented field of view. Each wavefront/guiding subsystem comprises a pair of 4K x 4K guide sensors, capable of producing 9 frames/second, and a pair of offset 2K x 4K wavefront curvature sensors from which the images are read out at the cadence of the main camera system, providing 15 sec integrations. These four guider/wavefront corner rafts are mechanically and electrically isolated from the science sensor rafts and can be installed or removed independently from any other focal plane subsystem. We present the implementation of this LSST subsystem detailing both hardware and software development and status.

The design of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) requires a camera system of unprecedented size and complexity. Achieving the science goals of the LSST project, through design, fabrication, integration, and operation, requires a thorough understanding of the camera performance. Essential to this effort is the camera modeling which defines the effects of a large number of potential mechanical, optical, electronic or sensor variations which can only be captured with sophisticated instrument modeling that incorporates all of the crucial parameters. This paper presents the ongoing development of LSST camera instrument modeling and details the parametric issues and attendant analysis involved with this modeling.

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) uses a novel, three-mirror, telescope design feeding a camera system that includes a set of broad-band filters and three refractive corrector lenses to produce a flat field at the focal plane with a wide field of view. Optical design of the camera lenses and filters is integrated in with the optical design of telescope mirrors to optimize performance. We discuss the rationale for the LSST camera optics design, describe the methodology for fabricating, coating, mounting and testing the lenses and filters, and present the results of detailed analyses demonstrating that the camera optics will meet their performance goals.

The Space-based Telescopes for Actionable Refinement of Ephemeris (STARE) program will collect the information needed to help satellite operators avoid collisions in space by using a network of nano-satellites to determine more accurate trajectories for selected space objects orbiting the Earth. In the first phase of the STARE program, two pathfinder cube-satellites (CubeSats) equipped with an optical imaging payload are being developed and deployed to demonstrate the main elements of the STARE concept. In this paper, we first give an overview of the STARE program. We then describe the details of the optical imaging payload for the STARE pathfinder CubeSats, including the optical design and the sensor characterization. Finally, we discuss the track detection algorithm that will be used on the images acquired by the payload.

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is a large aperture, wide-field facility designed to provide deep images of half the sky every few nights. There is only a single instrument on the telescope, a 9.6 square degree visible-band camera, which is mounted close to the secondary mirror, and points down toward the tertiary. The requirements of the LSST camera present substantial technical design challenges. To cover the entire 0.35 to 1 μm visible band, the camera incorporates an array of 189 over-depleted bulk silicon CCDs with 10 μm pixels. The CCDs are assembled into 3 x 3 "rafts", which are then mounted to a silicon carbide grid to achieve a total focal plane flatness of 15 μm p-v. The CCDs have 16 amplifiers per chip, enabling the entire 3.2 Gigapixel image to be read out in 2 seconds. Unlike previous astronomical cameras, a vast majority of the focal plane electronics are housed in the cryostat, which uses a mixed refrigerant Joule-Thompson system to maintain a -100oC sensor temperature. The shutter mechanism uses a 3 blade stack design and a hall-effect sensor to achieve high resolution and uniformity. There are 5 filters stored in a carousel around the cryostat and the auto changer requires a dual guide system to control its position due to severe space constraints. This paper presents an overview of the current state of the camera design and development plan.

We obtained 960,200 22-by-22-pixel windowed images of a pinhole spot using the Teledyne H2RG CMOS detector with un-cooled SIDECAR readout. We performed an analysis to determine the precision we might expect in the position error signals to a telescope's guider system. We find that, under non-optimized operating conditions, the error in the computed centroid is strongly dependent on the total counts in the point image only below a certain threshold, approximately 50,000 photo-electrons. The LSST guider camera specification currently requires a 0.04 arcsecond error at 10 Hertz. Given the performance measured here, this specification can be delivered with a single star at 14 th to 18 th magnitude, depending on the passband.

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is a proposed ground based telescope that will perform a comprehensive astronomical survey by imaging the entire visible sky in a continuous series of short exposures. Four special purpose rafts, mounted at the corners of the LSST science camera, contain wavefront sensors and guide sensors. Wavefront measurements are accomplished using curvature sensing, in which the spatial intensity distribution of stars is measured at equal distances on either side of focus by CCD detectors. The four Corner Rafts also each hold two guide sensors. The guide sensors monitor the locations of bright stars to provide feedback that controls and maintains the tracking of the telescope during an exposure. The baseline sensor for the guider is a Hybrid Visible Silicon hybrid-CMOS detector. We present here a conceptual mechanical and electrical design for the LSST Corner Rafts that meets the requirements imposed by the camera structure, and the precision of both the wavefront reconstruction and the tracking. We find that a single design can accommodate two guide sensors and one split-plane wavefront sensor integrated into the four corner locations in the camera.

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) uses a novel, three-mirror, modified Paul-Baker design, with an 8.4-meter primary mirror, a 3.4-m secondary, and a 5.0-m tertiary feeding a refractive camera design with 3 lenses (0.69-1.55m) and a set of broadband filters/corrector lenses. Performance is excellent over a 9.6 square degree field and ultraviolet to near infrared wavelengths. We describe the image quality error budget analysis methodology which includes effects from optical and optomechanical considerations such as index inhomogeneity, fabrication and null-testing error, temperature gradients, gravity, pressure, stress, birefringence, and vibration.

The LSST Telescope has critical requirements on tracking error to meet image quality specifications, and will require closing a guiding loop, with the telescope servo control, to meet its mission. The guider subsystem consists of eight guiding sensors located inside the science focal plane at the edge of the 3.5deg field of view. All eight sensors will be read simultaneously at a high rate, and a centroid average will be fed to the telescope and rotator servo controls, for tracking error correction. A detailed model was developed to estimate the sensors centroid noise and the resulting telescope tracking error for a given frame rate and telescope servo control system. The centroid noise depends on the photo-electron flux, seeing conditions, and guide sensor specifications. The model for the photo-electron flux takes into consideration the guide star availability at different galactic latitudes, the atmospheric extinction, the optical losses at different filter bands, the detector quantum efficiency, the integration time and the number of stars sampled. A 7-layer atmospheric model was also developed to estimate the atmospheric decorrelation between the different guide sensors due to the 3.5deg field of view, to predict both correlated and decorrelated atmospheric tip/tilt components, and to determine the trade-offs of the guider servo loop.

In nanotechnology, strategies for the creation and manipulation of nanoparticles in the gas phase are critically important for surface modification and substrate-free characterization. Recent coherent diffractive imaging with intense femtosecond X-ray pulses has verified the capability of single-shot imaging of nanoscale objects at suboptical resolutions beyond the radiation-induced damage threshold. By intercepting electrospray-generated particles with a single 15 femtosecond soft-X-ray pulse, we demonstrate diffractive imaging of a nanoscale specimen in free flight for the first time, an important step toward imaging uncrystallized biomolecules.

The bio-aerosol mass spectrometry (BAMS) instrument analyzes single aerosol particles using a dual-polarity time-of-flight mass spectrometer recording simultaneously spectra of thirty to a hundred thousand points on each polarity. We describe here a real-time pattern recognition algorithm developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory that has been implemented on a nine digital signal processor (DSP) system from Signatec Incorporated. The algorithm first pre-processes independently the raw time-of-flight data through an adaptive baseline removal routine. The next step consists of a polarity dependent calibration to a mass-to-charge representation, reducing the data to about five hundred to a thousand channels per polarity. The last step is the identification step using a pattern recognition algorithm based on a library of known particle signatures including threat agents and background particles. The identification step includes integrating the two polarities for a final identification determination using a score-based rule tree. This algorithm, operating on multiple channels per-polarity and multiple polarities, is well suited for parallel real-time processing. It has been implemented on the PMP8A from Signatec Incorporated, which is a computer based board that can interface directly to the two one-Giga-sample digitizers (PDA1000 from Signatec Incorporated) used to record the two polarities of time-of-flight data. By using optimized data separation, pipelining, and parallel processing across the nine DSPs it is possible to achieve a processing speed of up to a thousand particles per seconds, while maintaining the recognition rate observed on a non-real time implementation. This embedded system has allowed the BAMS technology to improve its throughput and therefore its sensitivity while maintaining a large dynamic range (number of channels and two polarities) thus maintaining the systems specificity for bio-detection

The Bio-Aerosol Mass Spectrometry (BAMS) system is an instrument used for the real time detection and identification of biological aerosols. Particles are drawn from the atmosphere directly into vacuum and tracked as they scatter light from several continuous wave lasers. After tracking, the fluorescence of individual particles is excited by a pulsed 266nm or 355nm laser. Molecules from those particles with appropriate fluorescence properties are subsequently desorbed and ionized using a pulsed 266nm laser. Resulting ions are analyzed in a dual polarity mass spectrometer. During two field deployments at the San Francisco International Airport, millions of ambient particles were analyzed and a small but significant fraction were found to have fluorescent properties similar to Bacillus spores and vegetative cells. Further separation of non-biological background particles from potential biological particles was accomplished using laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry. This has been shown to enable some level of species differentiation in specific cases, but the creation and observation of higher mass ions is needed to enable a higher level of specificity across more species. A soft ionization technique, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) is being investigated for this purpose. MALDI is particularly well suited for mass analysis of biomolecules since it allows for the generation of molecular ions from large mass compounds that would fragment under normal irradiation. Some of the initial results from a modified BAMS system utilizing this technique are described.

The BioAerosol Mass Spectrometry (BAMS) system is a rapidly fieldable, fully autonomous instrument that can perform correlated measurements of multiple orthogonal properties of individual aerosol particles. The BAMS front end uses optical techniques to nondestructively measure a particle's aerodynamic diameter and fluorescence properties. Fluorescence can be excited at 266nm or 355nm and is detected in two broad wavelength bands. Individual particles with appropriate size and fluorescence properties can then be analyzed more thoroughly in a dual-polarity time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Over the course of two deployments to the San Francisco International Airport, more than 6.5 million individual aerosol particles were fully analyzed by the system. Analysis of the resulting data has provided a number of important insights relevant to rapid bioaerosol detection, which are described here.

A germanium based gamma ray imager with 3D position sensitivity is being developed. The imager will detect gamma rays in the range of /spl sim/10 keV to 1.5 MeV and locate their interactions in the germanium to within 2 mm in X, Y and Z. The instrument is segmented into 39 orthogonal strips in both the X and Y directions with a 2 mm pitch. Each channel is separately instrumented with a miniature low-noise charge-sensitive preamplifier followed by shaping and timing electronics. Germanium based imagers with 2-D position sensitivity have recently been developed and fully instrumented by our group. The current instrument adds the capability for determining the Z position (depth of interaction). The Z coordinate is found by looking at the relative timing of the signals induced by the drifting electrons and holes. A relatively simple analog approach for determining the depth of interaction was implemented. Some of the intended applications for this type of instrument include balloon based imaging experiments and field portable devices for environmental remediation. Therefore, much of the effort was concentrated on developing a detector and electronics scheme that was simple, compact, and low power. The instrument is described with emphasis on the technique used for measuring the Z coordinate. Results obtained from spectroscopy as well as Z position measurements are shown.

We report on development of a new storage ring operations tool for measurement of longitudinal beam density profile. The technique mixes synchrotron light with light from a mode locked solid-state laser oscillator in a non-linear crystal and detects the up-converted radiation with a photo-multiplier. The laser is phase locked to the storage ring RF system. The laser choices available for repetition frequency, pulse length and phase modulation give a very wide range of options for matching the bunch configuration of particular storage rings. Progress in the technology of solid-state lasers ensures this system can be made robust for routine use in storage ring operations. A very large number of important applications are possible including measurement of the fraction of untrapped particles prior to acceleration, the population of particles in the nominally unfilled RF buckets in a bunch train ("ghost bunches"), longitudinal tails, the diffusion of particles into the beam abort gap and the normal bunch parameters of longitudinal shape and intensity. We are currently investigating application to two devices: (1) the 1.9 GeV ALS electron storage ring at LBNL with 328 RF buckets, 2ns bucket spacing, 276 nominally filled bunches, 15-30ps rms bunch length and (2) the 7 TeV LHC proton collider under construction at CERN with 35,640 RF buckets, 2.5 ns bucket spacing, 2,808 nominally filled bunches, 280-620 ps rms bunch length. A proof of principle experiment is being conducted on ALS. The results of the ALS experiment and detailed analyses of the application to LHC and its requirements are described.

A Compton imager has been developed based on a single germanium strip detector. The system has the ability to image point or continuous gamma ray sources located anywhere in a 4-/spl pi/ field of view. The effective energy range for imaging is approximately 200 keV to greater than 1 MeV. The system was designed as a prototype for a field deployable system. Therefore, custom electronics were designed and other efforts were made such that the entire system could fit on a small lab cart and be moved by a single person. Possible applications include search and monitoring of radionuclide material. Various images are shown and the ability of the imager to find a source in the presence of high background is demonstrated. The absolute imaging efficiency or the detector at 511 keV is shown to be /spl sim/ 4 * 10/sup -3/ for this system. Of events that deposited their full energy in the detector, it is shown that /spl sim/20% are suitable for imaging using current techniques. Methods to improve the efficiency in future systems are discussed.

The front IR quadrupole absorbers (TAS) and the IR neutral particle absorbers (TAN) in the high luminosity insertions of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) each absorb approximately 1.8 TeV of forward collision products on average per pp interaction (/spl sim/235 W at design luminosity 10/sup 34/ cm/sup -2/ s/sup -1/). This secondary particle flux can be exploited to provide a useful storage ring operations tool for optimization of luminosity. A novel segmented, multi-gap, pressurized gas ionization chamber is being developed for sampling the energy deposited near the maxima of the hadronic/electromagnetic showers in these absorbers. The system design choices have been strongly influenced by optimization of signal to noise ratio and by the very high radiation environment. The ionization chambers are instrumented with low noise, fast, pulse shaping electronics to be capable of resolving individual bunch crossings at 40 MHz. Data on each bunch are to be separately accumulated over multiple bunch crossings until the desired statistical accuracy is obtained. At design luminosity approximately 2/spl times/10/sup 3/ bunch crossings will suffice for a 1% luminosity measurement. In this paper we report the first experimental results of the ionization chamber and analog electronics. Single 450 GeV protons from the SPS at CERN are used to simulate the hadronic/electromagnetic showers produced by the forward collision products from the interaction regions of the LHC.
