The School of Medicine and Health Sciences is under pressure to increase its output and ensure the graduates are able to function in rural settings. Through two studies, we aimed to determine the predictors of student performance and their socioeconomic and educational background to assist in determining admission policies and improve completion rates.Methods: A retrospective study analysed data relating to student performance from six annual cohorts. A cross-sectional study among currently enrolled students sought information about their socioeconomic and educational background.Results: Of the 300 students enrolled in the six cohorts, 176 (59%) completed the programme in the scheduled 4 years. There were no differences in completion rates by gender or route of entry to the programme. Grade point average at medical school entry predicted academic performance. Sixty-four per cent of the students who failed to complete in four years attributed their poor academic performance to social issues. Overall attrition was only 8%. Seventy-six per cent (162/214) of the enrolled students completed the cross-sectional survey. Most (79%) of students’ fathers and 58% of mothers had postsecondary education. Seventy-three per cent of respondents indicated that they had been to preschool or elementary school. Thirty-six per cent had attended primary school in a village or government/mission station. Just over half (53%) of the students indicated that English had been the language most used in primary school. Males were more likely to have made a specific career choice than females. The majority (141/162, 88%) of the students indicated that they had experienced some academic difficulty during the years.Conclusion: Prior academic performance predicted timely completion of the MBBS programme. Just over a third of students had attended rural village primary schools. 2. The Use of Suture Augmentation for Graft Protection in ACL Reconstruction: A Biomechanical Study in Porcine Knees

Abstract: Purpose: To biomechanically evaluate the use of the suture augmentation construct at time 0 of ACL reconstruction. Methods: Eighty porcine knees underwent ACL reconstruction using 2 techniques for graft fixation: a single suspensory construct (SSC), performed with a femoral button and tibial interference screw; and a double suspensory construct (DSC), with a femoral and tibial button. Each fixation technique was performed on 40 porcine knees divided into 4 subgroups. The first group had a nonaugmented ACL reconstruction, the second group had an ACL reconstruction with suture augmentation, and the third and fourth groups were the same as the first and second groups, with the graft resected 80% to simulate graft weakening. Ultimate load, yield load, stiffness, cyclic displacement values, and mode of failure were recorded for each graft. Results: In a weakened graft model with 80% graft resection, there was a significant increase in ultimate strength (P < .001), yield strength (P < .001), and cyclic displacement (P < .001) with suture augmentation. There was no significant increase in stiffness with suture augmentation with either construct (P = .278). In the setting of an intact graft, there were no differences in either SSC or DCS groups with or without suture augmentation. Conclusions: The addition of a suture to ACL reconstruction techniques resulted in minimal changes in baseline biomechanical characteristics while improving ultimate load, yield load, and cyclic displacement in a weakened graft model. Clinical Relevance: Suture augmentation of ACL reconstruction may confer improved integrity of the graft and is worth consideration and future clinical study.

3. The potential of blue lupins as a protein source, in the diets of laying hens

Abstract: Layers diets typically contain 15–20% soya due to its high crude protein content (ca. 36%). Reliance on soya for protein can result in large increases in cost of feed due to the law of supply and demand as a global commodity. Lupin grains have high protein content (35–40%) but previous experience with white lupins has shown toxic effects in poultry due to high levels alkaloids and poor performance due to anti-nutritional Non-starch polysaccharides (NSP). Here blue lupins either processed or whole were trialled for their potential as a protein source. Point of lay chickens (64) at 16 weeks of age were weighed and allocated to 16 coops of four hens. Coops, as the experimental unit, were randomly allocated to four treatments: layers mash with soya (Control); or layers mash with 150 g of lupin/kg diet with the lupin either: whole (Whole); dehulled (Dehulled) or dehulled + a solid state fermentation enzyme extract (SSF; 150 g/tonne DM). All diets were ground and formulated to be balanced for energy, crude protein and essential amino acids using NIRS. Abstract: Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract: Identifying functionally critical regions of the malaria antigen AMA1 (apical membrane antigen 1) is necessary to understand the significance of the polymorphisms within this antigen for vaccine development. The crystal structure of AMA1 in complex with the Fab fragment of inhibitory monoclonal antibody 1F9 reveals that 1F9 binds to the AMA1 solvent-exposed hydrophobic trough, confirming its importance. 1F9 uses the heavy and light chain complementarity-determining regions (CDRs) to wrap around the polymorphic loops adjacent to the trough, but uses a ridge of framework residues to bind to the hydrophobic trough. The resulting 1F9-AMA1-combined buried surface of 2,470 A(2) is considerably larger than previously reported Fab-antigen interfaces. Mutations of polymorphic AMA1 residues within the 1F9 epitope disrupt 1F9 binding and dramatically reduce the binding of affinity-purified human antibodies. Moreover, 1F9 binding to AMA1 is competed by naturally acquired human antibodies, confirming that the 1F9 epitope is a frequent target of immunological attack.

6. The impact of using alternative forages on the nutrient value within slurry and its implications for forage productivity in agricultural systems.

Abstract: Alternative forages can be used to provide valuable home-grown feed for ruminant livestock. Utilising these different forages could affect the manure value and the implications of incorporating these forages into farming systems, needs to be better understood. An experiment tested the hypothesis that applying slurries from ruminants, fed ensiled red clover (Trifolium pratense), lucerne (Medicago sativa) or kale (Brassica oleracea) would improve the yield of hybrid ryegrass (Lolium hybridicum), compared with applying slurries from ruminants fed ensiled hybrid ryegrass, or applying inorganic N alone. Slurries from sheep offered one of four silages were applied to ryegrass plots (at 35 t ha⁻¹) with 100 kg N ha⁻¹ inorganic fertiliser; dry matter (DM) yield was compared to plots only receiving ammonium nitrate at rates of 0, 100 and 250 kg N ha⁻¹ year-1. The DM yield of plots treated with 250 kg N, lucerne or red clover slurry was significantly higher than other treatments (Pred clover (81 kg) >kale (44 kg) >ryegrass (26 kg ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹). These FNE values represent relative efficiencies of 22% (ryegrass), 52% (kale), 47% (red clover) and 60% for lucerne slurry, with the ryegrass slurry efficiency being lowest (P = 0.005). 7. Effects of chicory/perennial ryegrass swards compared with perennial ryegrass swards on the performance and carcass quality of grazing beef steers.

Abstract: An experiment investigated whether the inclusion of chicory (Cichorium intybus) in swards grazed by beef steers altered their performance, carcass characteristics or parasitism when compared to steers grazing perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Triplicate 2-ha plots were established with a chicory/ryegrass mix or ryegrass control. Forty-eight Belgian Blue-cross steers were used in the first grazing season and a core group (n = 36) were retained for finishing in the second grazing season. The experiment comprised of a standardisation and measurement period. During standardisation, steers grazed a ryegrass/white clover pasture as one group. Animals were allocated to treatment on the basis of liveweight, body condition and faecal egg counts (FEC) determined 7 days prior to the measurement period. The measurement period ran from 25 May until 28 September 2010 and 12 April until 11 October 2011 in the first and second grazing year. Steers were weighed every 14 days at pasture or 28 days during housing. In the first grazing year, faecal samples were collected for FEC and parasite cultures. At the end of the first grazing year, individual blood samples were taken to determine O. ostertagi antibody and plasma pepsinogen levels. During winter, animals were housed as one group and fed silage. In the second grazing year, steers were slaughtered when deemed to reach fat class 3. Data on steer performance showed no differences in daily live-weight gain which averaged 1.04 kg/day. The conformation, fat grade and killing out proportion of beef steers grazing chicory/ryegrass or ryegrass were not found to differ. No differences in FEC, O. ostertagi antibody or plasma pepsinogen levels of beef steers grazing either chicory/ryegrass or ryegrass were observed. Overall, there were no detrimental effects of including chicory in swards grazed by beef cattle on their performance, carcass characteristics or helminth parasitism, when compared with steers grazing ryegrass.

Abstract: Humans and other intelligent agents often rely on collective decision making based on an intuition that groups outperform individuals. However, at present, we lack a complete theoretical understanding of when groups perform better. Here we examine performance in collective decision-making in the context of a real-world citizen science task environment in which individuals with manipulated differences in task-relevant training collaborated. We find 1) dyads gradually improve in performance but do not experience a collective benefit compared to individuals in most situations; 2) the cost of coordination to efficiency and speed that results when switching to a dyadic context after training individually is consistently larger than the leverage of having a partner, even if they are expertly trained in that task; and 3) on the most complex tasks having an additional expert in the dyad who is adequately trained improves accuracy. These findings highlight that the extent of training received by an individual, the complexity of the task at hand, and the desired performance indicator are all critical factors that need to be accounted for when weighing up the benefits of collective decision-making., Comment: in Press in Collective Intelligence. 16. Is ATAR Useful for Predicting the Success of Australian Students in Initial Teacher Education?

Abstract: Quality teaching is the most significant systemic factor contributing to student achievement. Attracting, developing and retaining effective teachers are important goals for Australia as they are for all nations. Debate rages currently about criteria for selection of students into Initial Teacher Education (ITE). The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is promoted by some commentators as a useful selection measure. The data from six cohorts of students from undergraduate degree programmes at a Melbourne university campus were investigated to evaluate the validity of ATAR as a predictor of academic success and performance on school placement. ATAR was positively related to academic success for students in the three Bachelor of Education Primary cohorts but was weakly related for the three Early Childhood/Primary cohorts. Ratings of performance by associate teachers on placement were unrelated to ATAR for all six cohorts. Given less than one third of students nationally enter ITE on the basis of their ATAR the data suggest that a variety of selection methods and criteria are required and ensuring high standards within IITE courses is the best way to control for quality of graduates.

20. Inclusion Classrooms and Teachers: A Survey of Current Practices

Abstract: This study investigates the current state of inclusion practices in general education classrooms via survey of 71 inclusion teachers currently serving as special educators across the state of New York. Specifically, small group instruction, co-teaching, one-to-one instruction, and planning support are explored in relationship to class size, number of students with disabilities, and severity of disability. The qualifications, strengths, and professional development experiences of inclusion teachers based on their reported years of teaching experience, preparatory course work, and professional development opportunities are examined. Finally, information on common forms of assistance including consultant special education teachers, teacher assistants, and classroom volunteers are documented. Quantitative analysis of survey responses indicate great variability among the inclusion practices employed in general education classrooms. Co-teaching, though frequently cited as the most beneficial model of inclusive practice, emerged as the least documented method of instruction, with the utilization of consultant teacher models emerging as the most prevalent. Endorsement of the use volunteer support was found to be the second most common support mechanism employed within inclusive classrooms. Few differences in the types of supports employed were found across population densities. Findings highlight the heterogeneity of current inclusion practices, and bear implications in terms of future research examining the qualifications of support staff assisting students with special needs, such as volunteers, and the overall efficacy of inclusion practices in general. We find that VII Zw 403 has a relatively high HI mass-to-light ratio for a BCD. The rotation velocity is nominally 10-15 km/s, but rises to ~20 km/s after correction for the ~8-10 km/s random motions present in the gas. The velocity field is complex; including a variation in the position angle of the major axis going from the NE to the SW parts of the galaxy. Our high resolution HI maps reveal structure in the central gas, including a large, low-density HI depression or hole between the southern and northern halves of the galaxy, coincident with an unresolved x-ray source. Although interactions have been proposed as the triggering mechanism for the vigorous star formation occurring in BCDs, VII Zw 403 does not seem to have been tidally triggered by an external interaction, as we have found no nearby possible perturbers. It also doesn't appear to fall in the set of galaxies that exhibit a strong central mass density concentration, as its optical scale length is large in comparison to similar systems. However, there are some features that are compatible with an accretion event: optical/HI axis misalignment, a change in position angle of the kinematic axis, and a complex velocity field., Comment: 62 pages, 19 figures

Abstract: Seat-elevating devices (SEDs) allow vertical movement of the seat of a power wheelchair (PWC), so users can perform activities of daily living including transferring and reaching. RESNA's position papers on SEDs and the wheelchair provision process highlight the benefits of SEDs and the need for outcome measurement. The Functional Mobility Assessment (FMA) is a satisfaction measure to carry out specific tasks including transferring and reaching. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the relationship between the use of SEDs on the FMA and uniform dataset (UDS) with a sample of 1,733 PWC users. Independent-samples t-tests and Mann–Whitney U tests were used to compare total FMA and individual FMA item scores between those with and without an SED. A univariate linear regression model was used to control for confounding variables and determine if SEDs were a predictor of variance in FMA. Those with SEDs had significantly higher total FMA percentage score (mean = 76.7 ± 20.9) than those without SEDs (mean = 59.6 ± 24.7; t = 11.9, p < 0.001). Those with SEDs had significantly higher reach (U = 99849.0, p < 0.001) and transfer (U = 140587.0, p < 0.001) scores. 36. The Development of Australia's Oceans Policy: Change and Stability in a Policy Community

Abstract: In December 1998, the Howard Government released Australia's Oceans Policy, a major initiative focused at providing a framework for implementing integrated ecosystem based management of Australia's vast marine domain. This thesis utilises a policy community approach to review the processes and institutions that led to the development of Australia's Oceans Policy. It argues that despite significant policy change affected by both external and domestic policy drivers, a key element in shaping responses to the policy has been stability within the policy community shaped paradoxically by 'offshore federalism' that has made it difficult to implement a fully integrated oceans policy. Analysis of the development and implementation of the Australia's Oceans Policy indicates that change to ocean related policies embodied in the policy framework have been driven by several interrelated factors. These include debates over appropriate management of resources within and between sectoral groups; coordination of marine resource management between state and Commonwealth governments; and Commonwealth commitments to international instruments. New institutional arrangements established by Australia's Oceans Policy such as the National Oceans Office, National Oceans Ministerial Board, National Oceans Advisory Group and Regional Marine Plan Steering Committees, reflect a commitment towards integrated ocean management but at the same time confront the legal and jurisdictional framework established following a quarter century of 'offshore federalism'.

Abstract: Gentle stroking of the skin is a common social touch behavior with positive affective consequences. A preference for slow versus fast stroking of hairy skin has been closely linked to the firing of unmyelinated C-tactile (CT) somatosensory afferents. Because the firing of CT afferents strongly correlates with touch pleasantness, the CT pathway has been considered a social-affective sensory pathway. Recently, ablation of the spinothalamic pathway-thought to convey all C-fiber sensations-in patients with cancer pain impaired pain, temperature, and itch, butnotratings of pleasant touch. This suggested integration of A and CT fiber input in the spinal cord, or A-fiber contributions to computations of touch pleasantness in the brain. However, the causal contribution of A-fibers to touch pleasantness- in humanswithoutpain-remains unknown. In the current, single-blinded study we performed two types of peripheral nerve blocks in healthy adults to temporarily eliminate the contribution of A-fibers to touch perception. Our findings show that when A-fiber function is greatly diminished, the perceived intensityandpleasantness of both gentle stroking and deep pressure are nearly abolished. These findings demonstrate that explicit perception of the pleasantness of CT-targeted brushing and pressure both critically depend on A-fibers.

Abstract: The use of radiation as a selective modality for the treatment of cancer and various other diseases is a fundamental principle in modern medicine. However, despite decades of research and development, selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT), the arterial delivery of radioactive particles for the treatment of hepatic tumours, remains a poorly utilised technology outside of the liver. A major challenge for SIRT is the current lack of control over the distribution of particles in the affected tissue. Achieving a uniform distribution throughout the tumour mass is critical for ensuring a therapeutically relevant dose of radiation and hence successful treatment. Cavitation of microbubbles has been successfully employed to facilitate the extravasation of various nanoparticles and therapeutic agents in tissue. It is hypothesised that ultrasound induced cavitation has the potential to move larger micron sized particles used within SIRT, to increase the distribution of the therapeutic microspheres. The primary goal of this doctoral thesis is to investigate the potential use of ultrasound-induced cavitation to enhance SIRT by facilitating transport of radioactive microspheres in tissue. A secondary goal of the thesis is to explore its use in the treatment of other types of cancer, in particular Glioblastoma Multiforme; a particularly grave cancer of high incidence. First, a tissue phantom and experimental protocol are designed to enable observation of the transport of microspheres induced by ultrasound exposure using high resolution X-ray computed tomography (µCT) imaging. Proof of concept results are obtained to confirm the feasibility of the approach. An analysis framework and image processing software are then employed to enable quantification of microsphere transport in three dimensions and the corresponding radiation exposure that could be achieved. A detailed investigation of the parameter space is then made using a statistical Design-of-Experiments methodology to identify the conditions under which a suitable microsphere distribution can be achieved; peak negative pressure correlated non-linearly with post focal projection depth and could be used to make predictions with 88.4% confidence for 95% of the observations used in the model. Finally, ultra-high speed imaging (0.1-2Mfps) is used to explore the mechanisms by which cavitation promotes microsphere transport; producing novel brightfield images of microbubble cloud activity and mass transport of dense glass microspheres. Overall, the results presented in the thesis demonstrate the feasibility of using ultrasound induced cavitation to enhance SIRT within target tissues not readily treated by an arterial route. Further work to understand the impact of tissue heterogeneity and the design of a bespoke ultrasound transducer will be required to enable clinical translation.

Abstract: Prosodic information in the speech signal carries information about linguistic structure as well as emotional content. Brain activation associated with processing of linguistic prosody was examined in a study of 284 normally developing children between the ages of 5 and 18 years. Children listened to low-pass filtered sentences and were asked to detect those that matched a target sentence. fMRI scanning revealed multiple regions of activation that predicted behavioral performance, independent of age-related changes in activation. Likewise, age-related changes in task activation were found that were independent of differences in task accuracy. The overall pattern of activation is interpreted in light of task demands and factors that may underlie age-related changes in task performance.
