5. Population affinities in pre‐colonial West Africa: The case of the burial cave Iroungou (Gabon, 14th–15th century CE).

Abstract

Introduction: Our knowledge of the populations of sub‐Saharan Africa in the periods before European colonization is limited. Few archeological sites containing human remains have been identified, and written sources for these periods are rare. The discovery in 2018 of the Iroungou sepulchral cave (Gabon), whose use predates the arrival of the Portuguese (14th–15th centuries CE), is an exceptional source of information: at least 28 individuals associated with numerous metal artifacts were found there. The anthropobiological remains were left in situ, but the eight best preserved crania were digitized. Objectives: This study focuses on the population affinities of these crania, whose morphology was described using 237 landmarks. Materials and Methods: Geometric morphometric analyses were used to compare the eight Iroungou specimens with 154 individuals representing 12 well‐defined African populations. After alignment (Generalized Procrustes Analysis), morphological affinity was assessed using Euclidean and Mahalanobis distances, and posterior probabilities of population membership (discriminant analysis). Results: Results indicate that the eight Iroungou crania have, on average, more affinity with Bayaka Pygmy, followed by Central African Bantu. Nevertheless, individually, the Iroungou specimens show an important morphological variation and the eight crania can be separated into different affinity groups: Bayaka and Central African Bantu, KhoeSan, and East‐African Bantu. Finally, one individual presents strong affinity with Somalis. Conclusion: This phenetic mapping of the Iroungou sample raises questions about the profile of the individuals deposited in the cave in a geographical area known for the Loango pre‐colonial kingdom, which ruling class seemed to have had privileged relationships with the Pygmy populations. 6. Sex estimation of the human os coxae in archeological contexts: An advocacy of using both Diagnose Sexuelle Probabiliste and Brůžek's morphoscopic method.

Abstract

The aims of this article are (1) to present the applicability of two methods of sex estimation of the coxal bone—the DiagnoseSexuelleProbabiliste (second version, DSP2) and the Brůžek's morphoscopic method (statistical version, SBMM)—on a large archeological metasample; (2) to provide the percentage of agreement between the two methods; and (3) to illustrate the interest to use both methods together. The metasample under study is composed of adult skeletons from several European collections spanning from the Final Mesolithic to the Early Modern period. It includes 1270 coxal bones belonging to 765 individuals. Final sex estimation provided by each method is compared for each coxal bone and for each individual. A sex estimate (female or male) has been obtained by at least one method for 1066 coxal bones, and for 685 of the individuals (83.9% and 89.5% of our sample, respectively). Incongruity between methods and/or left and right coxal bones is extremely rare. The combined use of SBMM and DSP2 yields high rates of congruent sex estimations. While DSP2 results in a lower rate of sex estimation compared to SBMM, it likely offers better inter‐observer reproducibility, and their joint application significantly increases the total number of classified individuals. It is recommended to record both metric and nonmetric variables from DSP2 and SBMM on both coxal bones to increase the number of sex estimations while maintaining high reliability. Abstract

The article titled "Estimation of missing ordinal data: A comment on Wissler et al. (2022)" discusses the accuracy of multiple imputation methods for handling missing ordinal or continuous data. The authors comment on the accuracy metric used in the original study and propose an alternative metric that provides a more realistic assessment of imputation accuracy. They also evaluate the performance of one imputation method, predictive mean matching (PMM), on a dataset of fibrocartilaginous entheseal changes. The results show that PMM performs better on this dataset compared to the dataset used in the original study. The authors conclude by highlighting the importance of considering the number of stages in recording a trait and the intercorrelation among variables when imputing missing values. Abstract

Modern humans have populated Europe for more than 45,000 years1,2. Our knowledge of the genetic relatedness and structure of ancient hunter-gatherers is however limited, owing to the scarceness and poor molecular preservation of human remains from that period3. Here we analyse 356 ancient hunter-gatherer genomes, including new genomic data for 116 individuals from 14 countries in western and central Eurasia, spanning between 35,000 and 5,000 years ago. We identify a genetic ancestry profile in individuals associated with Upper Palaeolithic Gravettian assemblages from western Europe that is distinct from contemporaneous groups related to this archaeological culture in central and southern Europe4, but resembles that of preceding individuals associated with the Aurignacian culture. This ancestry profile survived during the Last Glacial Maximum (25,000 to 19,000 years ago) in human populations from southwestern Europe associated with the Solutrean culture, and with the following Magdalenian culture that re-expanded northeastward after the Last Glacial Maximum. Conversely, we reveal a genetic turnover in southern Europe suggesting a local replacement of human groups around the time of the Last Glacial Maximum, accompanied by a north-to-south dispersal of populations associated with the Epigravettian culture. From at least 14,000 years ago, an ancestry related to this culture spread from the south across the rest of Europe, largely replacing the Magdalenian-associated gene pool. After a period of limited admixture that spanned the beginning of the Mesolithic, we find genetic interactions between western and eastern European hunter-gatherers, who were also characterized by marked differences in phenotypically relevant variants.

Abstract

International audience; Spondylolysis is a bony defect of the pars interarticularis mainly arising from repeated traumas. Other factors such as spina bifida occulta (SBO) are mentioned in clinical and palaeopathology but have been little studied. The aim of our study is to provide information on the prevalence of lumbar spondylolysis and its association with SBO in three samples: 1) a sample from the general contemporary French population (CT scans from the Nord hospital in Marseille); 2) a large mediaeval and modern osteoarchaeological collection from the cemetery of Notre-Dame-du-Bourg cathedral (NDB) (Digne-les-Bains, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence); and finally, 3) a corpus of prevalence data taken from the literature. Our results show that for the contemporary population, 26 out of 496 adult patients aged 18 to 69 years displayed at least one lumbar spondylolysis (5.2%). Its prevalence was significantly higher among patients with SBO (Odds ratio 3.8). In the NDB series, 9 individuals out of 455 had spondylolysis (2.0%). The prevalence was higher in the mediaeval period (3.5%) than in the modern period (0.5%). The same trend was found in our analysis of all European data in the literature, and the prevalence of spondylolysis was not associated with the presence of SBO.; La spondylolyse est une solution de continuité de la pars interarticularis principalement secondaire à des traumatismes répétés. D’autres facteurs, comme la spina bifida occulta (SBO) sont évoqués mais peu étudiés en clinique et en paléopathologie. Notre étude a pour objectif de renseigner la prévalence de la spondylolyse lombaire et son association avec la SBO au sein de trois corpus : 1) un échantillon issu de la population générale française contemporaine (tomodensitométrie, centre hospitalo-universitaire Nord de Marseille) ; 2) une large collection ostéoarchéologique médiévale et moderne provenant du cimetière de la cathédrale de Notre-Dame-du-Bourg (NDB) (Digneles-Bains, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) et enfin 3) un corpus de données issues de la littérature paléopathologique. Les résultats révèlent que, pour la population contemporaine, 26 patients adultes âgés de 18 à 69 ans parmi 496 montrent au moins une spondylolyse lombaire (5,2 %). Sa prévalence est significativement plus élevée chez les patients avec une SBO (odds ratio 3,8). Au sein de la série de NDB, 9 individus parmi 455 présentent une spondylolyse (2,0 %). La prévalence est plus élevée à la période médiévale (3,5 %) qu’à la période moderne (0,5 %). La même tendance a été retrouvée lors de l’analyse de l’ensemble des données européennes de la littérature et la prévalence de la spondylolyse n’était pas associée à la présence d’une SBO.
