5. Taking the long view of the multinational

- Abstract
Purpose This paper argues for the benefits to international business (IB) of taking a much longer view at the engagement by multinational enterprises (MNEs) with host locations. Design/methodology/approach The authors showcase a project tracking the engagement by MNEs with Australia over the past two centuries. Extensive archival work has been undertaken to identify and document modes of entry, home countries, industries, operational modes and company types among the MNEs operating in Australia. The authors also describe the shifting nature of Australia as a host location. Findings The authors demonstrate the historical and ongoing diversity of ways in which MNEs interact with a host. They show that different organisational forms have prevailed over time, and that considerable operational mode changes can best be observed when a long lens is adopted. The authors show how these mode changes interact with host country dynamics, and also the broader context of the MNE and its altering strategies. Research limitations/implications The authors urge IB scholars to embrace longer timeframes to capture the complexity of MNEs’ growth and adaptation more meaningfully. Originality/value By taking such a long-run perspective, the authors shed new light on the importance of moving beyond simple snapshots to analyse key IB constructs and phenomenon.

Abstract Given that lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a prevalent spinal condition that causes significant individual suffering and societal costs, the genetic basis of LDH has received relatively little research. Our aim is to increase understanding of the genetic factors influencing LDH. We perform a genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) of LDH in the FinnGen project and in Estonian and UK biobanks, followed by a genome-wide meta-analysis to combine the results. In the meta-analysis, we identify 41 loci that have not been associated with LDH in prior studies on top of the 23 known risk loci. We detect LDH-associated loci in the vicinity of genes related to inflammation, disc-related structures, and synaptic transmission. Overall, our research contributes to a deeper understanding of the genetic factors behind LDH, potentially paving the way for the development of new therapeutics, prevention methods, and treatments for symptomatic LDH in the future.

The benefits of digital twins and accurate near real-time on site condition monitoring of heavy machinery or load-bearing structures are undeniable. Both demand computationally light and accurate models based on continuously measured data. Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) algorithm provides the means for building accurate and fast predicting classification models. Therefore, the feasibility of the ELM algorithm for building models for near real-time operational state recognition of a rotating machine was studied. Three different models, called one, two, and six cycles, built using the ELM algorithm were compared with corresponding models trained using Support Vector Machine (SVM) and linear regression (LR) algorithms based on their accuracy and prediction times. The comparisons show that the SVM algorithm produces the best accuracy, but with the cost of high prediction times. The LR models have the lowest prediction time. In contrast, the ELM model for the two cycles presents better performance than the corresponding LR and SVM models when the combination of accuracy and the prediction time is considered. The great benefit of the ELM method comes from its mathematical properties: new data can be added to the ELM model without the need to retrain the whole model, and the model is competent to take strong nonlinearities into account. Thus, the possibilities of the ELM algorithm to act as a novelty detector in operational state recognition shall be investigated.

Abstract Background Lignin is a highly abundant but strongly underutilized natural resource that could serve as a sustainable feedstock for producing chemicals by microbial cell factories. Because of the heterogeneous nature of the lignin feedstocks, the biological upgrading of lignin relying on the metabolic routes of aerobic bacteria is currently considered as the most promising approach. However, the limited substrate range and the inefficient catabolism of the production hosts hinder the upgrading of lignin-related aromatics. Particularly, the aerobic O-demethylation of the methoxyl groups in aromatic substrates is energy-limited, inhibits growth, and results in carbon loss in the form of CO2. Results In this study, we present a novel approach for carbon-wise utilization of lignin-related aromatics by the integration of anaerobic and aerobic metabolisms. In practice, we employed an acetogenic bacterium Acetobacterium woodii for anaerobic O-demethylation of aromatic compounds, which distinctively differs from the aerobic O-demethylation; in the process, the carbon from the methoxyl groups is fixed together with CO2 to form acetate, while the aromatic ring remains unchanged. These accessible end-metabolites were then utilized by an aerobic bacterium Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1. By utilizing this cocultivation approach, we demonstrated an upgrading of guaiacol, an abundant but inaccessible substrate to most microbes, into a plastic precursor muconate, with a nearly equimolar yields (0.9 mol/mol in a small-scale cultivation and 1.0 mol/mol in a one-pot bioreactor cultivation). The process required only a minor genetic engineering, namely a single gene knock-out. Noticeably, by employing a metabolic integration of the two bacteria, it was possible to produce biomass and muconate by utilizing only CO2 and guaiacol as carbon sources. Conclusions By the novel approach, we were able to overcome the issues related to aerobic O-demethylation of methoxylated aromatic substrates and demonstrated carbon-wise conversion of lignin-related aromatics to products with yields unattainable by aerobic processes. This study highlights the power of synergistic integration of distinctive metabolic features of bacteria, thus unlocking new opportunities for harnessing microbial cocultures in upgrading challenging feedstocks.

Tämän tekstin tavoitteena on tarjota katsaus japanilaiseen Boshin-sodan historiankirjoitukseen ja -esityksiin, sekä sen muistamiseen liittyviä kiistakysymyksiä. Boshin-sota oli entisen Tokugawa-shogunaatin ja keisari Meijin ympärille muodostetun uuden hallituksen joukkojen välillä vuosina 1868—1869 käyty sisällissota, joka päätti Tokugawojen 265-vuotisen valtakauden. Sota oli merkittävä osa tapahtumaketjua, jonka myötä Japani muuttui noin neljässäkymmenessä vuodessa hajautetusti hallitusta feodaaliläänien kokoelmasta perustuslailliseksi yhtenäisvaltioksi ja alueelliseksi suurvallaksi. Vaikka sodan päättymisestä on kulunut yli 150 vuotta, siihen liittyvät kiistakysymykset, kuten kaatuneiden muistaminen, osapuolista käytettävät termit sekä sodan eskalaation syyt ovat säilyneet kiistanalaisena. Tulkinnat sodasta ovat myös muuttuneet ajan saatossa. The DigiBuzz-VTT project, a part of the DigiBuzz common effort, focused on the applications of digital twins in manufacturing industry ecosystems. The DigiBuzz-VTT project had two main focuses, 1) functional digital twins, or simulation-based digital twins, of machines and machine systems and their applications, and 2) the life cycle management of digital twins (the digital part of the twin), emphasising data modelling and data management. These themes were studied from the technical and from the business point of views. The detailed research topics were:• Business opportunities and added value of digital twins for manufacturing industry• Data-based digital twins, use of machine learning for feature recognition• The status of standardisation for the lifecycle data management of digital twins, means for preserving model data• Hybrid modelling with digital twins, combination of experimental and simulation data• The optimisation of the measurement points location, method development• The use of Kalman filters in estimating simulation data correlation with measured data• The status of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) for digital twinsThis report summarises the implementation of the DigiBuzz-VTT project and lists the main deliverables of the project. The project produced several scientific articles and research reports, which report the research results in detail.

Abstract Vascular and neural structures of the retina can be visualized non-invasively and used to predict ocular and systemic pathologies. We set out to evaluate the association of hemoglobin (Hb) levels within the national reference interval with retinal vascular caliber, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and visual field (VF) parameters in the Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort (n = 2319, 42.1% male, average age 47 years). The studied parameters were evaluated in Hb quintiles and multivariable linear regression models. The lowest Hb quintile of both sexes presented the narrowest central retinal vein equivalent (CRVE) and the healthiest cardiometabolic profile compared to the other Hb quintiles. In the regression models, CRVE associated positively with Hb levels in both sexes, (B males = 0.068 [0.001; 0.135], B females = 0.087 [0.033; 0.140]), after being adjusted for key cardiometabolic and inflammatory parameters, smoking status, and fellow vessel caliber. No statistically significant associations of Hb levels with central retinal artery equivalent, OCT or VF parameters were detected. In conclusion, Hb levels were positively and specifically associated with CRVE, indicating that Hb levels are an independent factor affecting CRVE and the effect is in parallel with established risk factors for cardiometabolic diseases.

17. Estimating evapotranspiration from commonly occurring urban plant species using porometry and canopy stomatal conductance

Evapotranspiration (ET) is a key moisture flux in both the urban stormwater management and the urban energy budgets. While there are established methods for estimating ET for agricultural crops, relatively little is known about ET rates associated with plants in urban Green Infrastructure settings. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using porometry to estimate ET rates. Porometry provides an instantaneous measurement of leaf stomatal conductance. There are two challenges when estimating ET from porometry: converting from leaf stomatal conductance to leaf ET and scaling from leaf ET to canopy ET. Novel approaches to both challenges are proposed here. ET was measured from three commonly occurring urban plant species (Sedum spectabile, Bergenia cordifolia and Primula vulgaris) using a direct mass loss method. This data was used to evaluate the estimates made from porometry in a preliminary study (Sheffield, UK). The Porometry data captured expected trends in ET, with clear differences between the plant species and the reproducible decreasing rates of ET in response to reductions in soil moisture content.

Naringenin, a flavanone and a precursor for a variety of flavonoids, has potential applications in the health and pharmaceutical sectors. The biological production of naringenin using genetically engineered microbes is considered as a promising strategy. The naringenin synthesis pathway involving chalcone synthase (CHS) and chalcone isomerase (CHI) relies on the efficient supply of key substrates, malonyl-CoA and p-coumaroyl-CoA. In this research, we utilized a soil bacterium, Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1, which exhibits several characteristics that make it a suitable candidate for naringenin biosynthesis; the strain naturally tolerates and can uptake and metabolize p-coumaric acid, a primary compound in alkaline-pretreated lignin and a precursor for naringenin production. A. baylyi ADP1 also produces intracellular lipids, such as wax esters, thereby being able to provide malonyl-CoA for naringenin biosynthesis. Moreover, the genomic engineering of this strain is notably straightforward. In the course of the construction of a naringenin-producing strain, the p-coumarate catabolism was eliminated by a single gene knockout (ΔhcaA) and various combinations of plant-derived CHS and CHI were evaluated. The best performance was obtained by a novel combination of genes encoding for a CHS from Hypericum androsaemum and a CHI from Medicago sativa, that enabled the production of 17.9 mg/L naringenin in batch cultivations from p-coumarate. Furthermore, the implementation of a fed-batch system led to a 3.7-fold increase (66.4 mg/L) in naringenin production. These findings underscore the potential of A. baylyi ADP1 as a host for naringenin biosynthesis as well as advancement of lignin-based bioproduction.

Summary: Background: Psoriasis (Pso) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that poses both physical and psychological challenges. Dysbiosis of the skin microbiome has been implicated in Pso, yet a comprehensive multi-omics analysis of host-microbe interactions is still lacking. To bridge this gap, we conducted an exploratory study by adopting the integrated approach that combines whole metagenomic shotgun sequencing with skin transcriptomics. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, adult patients with plaque-type Psoriasis (Pso) and healthy volunteers were included. Skin microbiota samples and biopsies were collected from both lesional and non-lesional skin areas on the lower back. Weighted Gene Correlation Network Analysis (WGCNA) was employed for co-expression network analysis, and cell deconvolution was conducted to estimate cell fractions. Taxonomic and functional features of the microbiome were identified using whole metagenomic shotgun sequencing. Association between host genes and microbes was analyzed using Spearman correlation. Findings: Host anti-viral responses and interferon-related networks were identified and correlated with the severity of psoriasis. The skin microbiome showed a greater prevalence of Corynebacterium simulans in the PASI severe-moderate groups, which correlated with interferon-induced host genes. Two distinct psoriatic clusters with varying disease severities were identified. Variations in the expression of cell apoptosis-associated antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and microbial aerobic respiration I pathway may partly account for these differences in disease severity. Interpretation: Our multi-omics analysis revealed for the first time anti-viral responses and the presence of C. simulans associated with psoriasis severity. It also identified two psoriatic subtypes with distinct AMP and metabolic pathway expression. Our study provides new insights into understanding the host-microbe interaction in psoriasis and lays the groundwork for developing subtype-specific strategies for managing this chronic skin disease. 21. Preoperative Risk Assessment of Early Kidney Graft Loss

Background. A large proportion of potential organ donors are not utilized for kidney transplantation out of risk of early allograft loss because of donor-related characteristics. These can be summarized using kidney donor profile index (KDPI). Because KDPI affects the choice of the recipient, the predictive ability of KDPI is tied to recipient attributes. These have been questioned to explain most of the predictive ability of KDPI. This study aims to quantify the effect of the donor on early graft loss (EGL) by accounting for nonrandom allocation. Methods. This study included patients undergoing kidney transplantation from deceased donors between 2014 and 2020 from the Scientific Registry of Transplantation Recipients. EGL, defined as a return to dialysis or retransplantation during the first posttransplant year, was the primary endpoint. Nonrandom allocation and donor–recipient matching by KDPI necessitated the use of inverse probability treatment weighting, which served to assess the effect of KDPI and mitigate selection bias in a weighted Cox regression model. Results. The study comprised 89 290 transplantations in 88 720 individual patients. Inverse probability treatment weighting resulted in a good balance of recipient covariates across values of continuous KDPI. Weighted analysis showed KDPI to be a significant predictor for short-term outcomes. A comparable (in terms of age, time on dialysis, previous transplants, gender, diabetes status, computed panel-reactive antibodies, and HLA mismatches) average recipient, receiving a kidney from a donor with KDPI 40–60 had a 3.5% risk of EGL increased to a risk of 7.5% if received a kidney from a KDPI >95 donor (hazard ratio, 2.3; 95% confidence interval, 1.9-2.7). However, for all-cause survival KDPI was less influential. Conclusions. The predictive ability of KDPI does not stem from recipient confounding alone. In this large sample-sized study, modeling methods accounting for nonindependence of recipient selection verify graft quality to effectively predict short-term transplantation outcomes.

22. Underpricing in a developing capital market: Australian equity issuances, 1920-39†

Developing capital markets generally lack the regulatory safeguards and rich informational sources that assist investors in judging new equity issues in modern markets. Focusing on the early stage capital market in interwar Australia, we calculate the success (underpricing and percentage raised) of 786 new equity issues, comparing initial public offerings, seasoned equity offerings, and rights issues. We examine whether the use of underwriters and the choice of security (ordinary or preference shares) affected the success of the equity issue. We find that certification by underwriters had no effect on capital‐raising success once we controlled for firm‐specific factors in the multivariate regressions, while underpricing and percentage raised varied by type of shares offered to investors.

Abstract The eye possesses a paravascular solute transport pathway that is driven by physiological pulsations, resembling the brain glymphatic pathway. We developed synchronous multimodal imaging tools aimed at measuring the driving pulsations of the human eye, using an eye-tracking functional eye camera (FEC) compatible with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for measuring eye surface pulsations. Special optics enabled integration of the FEC with MRI-compatible video ophthalmoscopy (MRcVO) for simultaneous retinal imaging along with functional eye MRI imaging (fMREye) of the BOLD (blood oxygen level dependent) contrast. Upon optimizing the fMREye parameters, we measured the power of the physiological (vasomotor, respiratory, and cardiac) eye and brain pulsations by fast Fourier transform (FFT) power analysis. The human eye pulsated in all three physiological pulse bands, most prominently in the respiratory band. The FFT power means of physiological pulsation for two adjacent slices was significantly higher than in one-slice scans (RESP1 vs. RESP2; df = 5, p = 0.045). FEC and MRcVO confirmed the respiratory pulsations at the eye surface and retina. We conclude that in addition to the known cardiovascular pulsation, the human eye also has respiratory and vasomotor pulsation mechanisms, which are now amenable to study using non-invasive multimodal imaging of eye fluidics.

Abstract There are several overlapping clinical practice guidelines in acute pancreatitis (AP), however, none of them contains suggestions on patient discharge. The Hungarian Pancreatic Study Group (HPSG) has recently developed a laboratory data and symptom-based discharge protocol which needs to be validated. (1) A survey was conducted involving all members of the International Association of Pancreatology (IAP) to understand the characteristics of international discharge protocols. Bacterial nanocellulose (BC) has attracted significant attention across a wide array of applications due to its distinctive characteristics. Recently, there has been increasing interest in leveraging waste biomass to improve sustainability in BC biogenesis processes. This study focuses on optimizing the citrus pulp waste (CPW) medium to enhance BC production using Komagataeibacter sucrofermentans. The screening of initial medium pH, yeast extract, CPW sugar and inoculum concentrations was conducted using the Plackett–Burman design, with BC yield (mgDW/gCPW) as the model response. The significant parameters, i.e., CPW sugars and yeast extract concentrations, were optimized using response surface methodology, employing a five-level, two-factor central composite design. The optimized CPW-based growth medium resulted in a final yield of 66.7 ± 5.1 mgDW/gCPW, representing a 14-fold increase compared to non-optimized conditions (4.3 ± 0.4 mgBC/gCPW). Material characterization analysis indicated that the produced BC showed high thermal stability (30% mass retained at 600 °C) and a crystallinity index value of 71%. Additionally, to enhance process sustainability, spent baker’s yeast hydrolysate (BYH) was assessed as a substitute for yeast extract, leading to a final BC titer of 9.3 ± 0.6 g/L.

Much of our knowledge about the nineteenth-century natural history boom resides with the collectors themselves and their collections. We know much less about the conduct of the global trade that made collecting possible. That such a trade occurred in the face of significant obstacles of distance, variable prices, inadequate information, and diverse agents makes our knowledge deficit the more significant. William John Macleay, based in Sydney, built his significant natural history collection by trading locally as well as across the globe. Our study of Macleay measures his complete set of trading transactions at a time of rapid expansion of his collection. It analyses how he chose between different forms of exchange and agreed fair value in order to complete long-distance specimen trading.

We present the design, simulations, fabrication, and measurements of a W-band waveguide impedance tuner. The design consists of a WR-10 waveguide with two E-plane arms for tunable dielectric-based backshorts. The impedance tuner is fabricated using a simple split-block technique and is easily scalable to submillimeter wavelengths. Our design shows an excellent input impedance range, tuning accuracy, repeatability, and a high attainable maximum reflection coefficient over the frequency band of 75-110 GHz. Our tuner applies dielectric-based backshorts, which provide a tuning accuracy better than that of other waveguide backshorts. A new coplanar waveguide (CPW)-to-rectangular waveguide transition is proposed for wide-band millimeter-wave applications. The transition has an in-line structure, which provides easy fabrication of the CPW circuit and waveguide block. An X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz) model has been designed and tested. Measurements of a back-to-back double transition have yielded a return loss of over 17 dB and an insertion loss of less than 0.5 dB over the full X-band. These results agree well with the simulated results obtained with a commercial electromagnetic structure simulator. In addition, this type of a transition has been designed and used for a local oscillator feed with a full F-band (90-140 GHz) coverage of a submillimeter-wave general-purpose harmonic mixer. However, previous studies on cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), a rare and aggressive cancer, have reported contradictory findings on the prognostic impact of tumor-infiltrating T-lymphocytes. Delayed graft function (DGF) after kidney transplantation is common and associated with worse graft outcomes. However, little is known about factors affecting graft survival post-DGF. We studied the association of cold ischemia time (CIT) and Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) with the long-term outcomes of deceased brain-dead donor kidneys with and without DGF. Data from Finland (n = 2,637) and from the US Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) registry (n = 61,405) was used. The association of KDPI and CIT with the graft survival of kidneys with or without DGF was studied using multivariable models. 849 (32%) kidneys had DGF in the Finnish cohort. DGF and KDPI were independent risk factors for graft loss, [HR 1.32 (95% CI 1.14–1.53), p < 0.001, and HR 1.01 per one point (95% CI 1.01–1.01), p < 0.001, respectively], but CIT was not, [HR 1.00 per CIT hour (95% CI 0.99–1.02), p = 0.84]. The association of DGF remained similar regardless of CIT and KDPI. The US cohort had similar results, but the association of DGF was stronger with higher KDPI. In conclusion, DGF and KDPI, but not CIT, are independently associated with graft survival. The association of DGF with worse graft survival is consistent across different CITs but stronger among marginal donors.

This paper provides a historical analysis of an urban services district through its examination of the Melbourne wool trade precinct in the 1920s. It is a study of both a local and global community whose social and spatial interaction facilitated large-scale trade of a complex commodity that has rarely been examined. Geographic mapping of the local and global connections of the precinct has been combined with archival evidence. It reveals the “buzz” of the Melbourne precinct, created by local social and professional connections among wool brokers and buyers. “Pipelines” to wool growing and textile regions were developed through overseas branches of firms, with global knowledge exchanged through correspondence, telegraph, and migration. These features shaped the progress of the trade, facilitating improvements in its infrastructure and in the ability of Melbourne’s wool brokers and buyers to fulfill their role as intermediaries in the global supply chain for this complex commodity.

Cooperative corporate behavior has often been explained through the social anatomy of business leaders and structural ties among firms. Our alternative approach investigates how quotidian interactions built trust and routines among a group of major firms in the Australian wool trade - a sector that required regular interaction to be effective. Deploying extensive archives of their meetings, we use social network analysis to examine interactions among the key group of firms and individuals. Through content analysis we infer the behavior and atmosphere of meetings. Finally, an evaluation of meeting agendas and outcomes demonstrates cooperation and a shared commitment to improving the operation of the wool trade in the 1920s.

Informal spaces encourage the meeting of minds and the sharing of ideas. They serve as an important counterpoint to the formal, silo-like structures of the modern organisation, encouraging social bonds and discussion across departmental lines. We address the role of one such institution – the university tea room – in Australia in the post-WWII decades. Drawing on a series of oral history interviews with economic historians, we examine the nature of the tea room space, demonstrate its effects on research within universities, and analyse the causes and implications of its decline in recent decades.

Background: This study assessed the potential cost-effectiveness of high (80–100%) vs low (21–35%) fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) at preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) after abdominal surgery in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Methods: Decision-analytic models were constructed using best available evidence sourced from unbundled data of an ongoing pilot trial assessing the effectiveness of high FiO2, published literature, and a cost survey in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Effectiveness was measured as percentage of SSIs at 30 days after surgery, a healthcare perspective was adopted, and costs were reported in US dollars ($). Results: High FiO2 may be cost-effective (cheaper and effective). In Nigeria, the average cost for high FiO2 was $216 compared with $222 for low FiO2 leading to a −$6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −$13 to −$1) difference in costs. In India, the average cost for high FiO2 was $184 compared with $195 for low FiO2 leading to a −$11 (95% CI: −$15 to −$6) difference in costs. In South Africa, the average cost for high FiO2 was $1164 compared with $1257 for low FiO2 leading to a −$93 (95% CI: −$132 to −$65) difference in costs. The high FiO2 arm had few SSIs, 7.33% compared with 8.38% for low FiO2, leading to a −1.05 (95% CI: −1.14 to −0.90) percentage point reduction in SSIs. Conclusion: High FiO2 could be cost-effective at preventing SSIs in the three countries but further data from large clinical trials are required to confirm this.

Analysing the dynamic evolution of a scholarly field requires an understanding of the social interactions within its community as well as the impact of the written word. Influence might diffuse through mentoring, graduate supervision, seminar discussion, and management roles. To date, our knowledge of the growth of economic history in Australia after 1945 draws heavily upon the impact of a number of key publications. We interview a broad selection of academics who worked in the field of Australian economic history, approximately 1950–90, to provide a fuller understanding of the evolution of this interdisciplinary field. Here, we applied CRISPRi for engineering Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1, a model bacterium for synthesizing intracellular storage lipids, namely wax esters. We first established an inducible CRISPRi system for strain ADP1, which enables tightly controlled repression of target genes. We then targeted the glyoxylate shunt to redirect carbon flow towards wax esters. Second, we successfully employed CRISPRi for modifying cell morphology by repressing ftsZ, an essential gene required for cell division, in combination with targeted knock‐outs to generate significantly enlarged filamentous or spherical cells respectively. The engineered cells sustained increased wax ester production metrics, demonstrating the potential of cell morphology engineering in the production of intracellular lipids.

- Abstract
After years in the wilderness, economic history is becoming fashionable once more. Intellectual shifts by its parent disciplines of history and economics, the failed experiment of economic history as a separate discipline, and the impact of major economic events have conspired to produce a renaissance in the field of study in the last decade and a half. We explain these changes and show that economic history derives its main strength from its role as an interdisciplinary research field that draws upon and integrates with its closest disciplines. We analyse the nature and recent progress of economic history in Australia and offer a prospective for its future role.

- Abstract
Interdisciplinary research is frequently viewed as an important component of the research landscape through its innovative ability to integrate knowledge from different areas. However, support for interdisciplinary research is often strategic rhetoric, with policy-makers and universities frequently adopting practices that favour disciplinary performance. We argue that disciplinary and interdisciplinary research are complementary, and we develop a simple framework that demonstrates this for a semi-permanent interdisciplinary research field. We argue that the presence of communicating infrastructures fosters communication and integration between disciplines and the interdisciplinary research field to generate innovative knowledge. We apply this to the experience of economic history in Australia in the second half of the twentieth century to demonstrate the life cycle of a semi-permanent interdisciplinary research field.

47. The Effects of World War II Military Service: Evidence from Australia

© 2017 The Economic History Association. Outside of the United States, few studies have estimated the effects of World War II service. In Australia, general war-time conscription and minimal involvement in the Korean War led to large cohort differences in military service rates, which we use for identification. We find a small, temporary negative effect on employment and a substantial positive effect on post-school qualifications, but not at the university level. While service increased home ownership slightly, it greatly reduced outright home ownership, consistent with the incentives provided by veterans' housing benefits. We also find a positive effect on marriage, but only from 1971.

Background: Trauma to the pancreas is rare but associated with significant morbidity. Currently available management guidelines are based on low-quality evidence and data on long-term outcomes is lacking. This study aimed to evaluate clinical characteristics and patient-reported long-term outcomes for pancreatic injury. Methods: A retrospective cohort study evaluating treatment for pancreatic injury in 11 centers across 5 European nations over >10 years was performed. Data relating to pancreatic injury and treatment were collected from hospital records. Patients reported quality of life (QoL), changes to employment and new or ongoing therapy due to index injury. Results: In all, 165 patients were included. The majority were male (70.9%), median age was 27 years (range: 6–93) and mechanism of injury predominantly blunt (87.9%). A quarter of cases were treated conservatively; higher injury severity score (ISS) and American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) pancreatic injury scores increased the likelihood for surgical, endoscopic and/or radiologic intervention. Isolated, blunt pancreatic injury was associated with younger age and pancreatic duct involvement; this cohort appeared to benefit from non-operative management. In the long term (median follow-up 93; range 8–214 months), exocrine and endocrine pancreatic insufficiency were reported by 9.3% of respondents. Long-term analgesic use also affected 9.3% of respondents, with many reported quality of life problems (QoL) potentially attributable to side-effects of opiate therapy. Overall, impaired QoL correlated with higher ISS scores, surgical therapy and opioid analgesia on discharge. Conclusions: Pancreatic trauma is rare but can lead to substantial short- and long-term morbidity. Near complete recovery of QoL indicators and pancreatic function can occur despite significant injury, especially in isolated, blunt pancreatic injury managed conservatively and when early weaning off opiate analgesia is achieved.
