The synthesis of heavy elements in supernovae is affected by low-energy (n,p) and (p,n) reactions on unstable nuclei, yet experimental data on such reaction rates are scarce. The SECAR (SEparator for CApture Reactions) recoil separator at FRIB (Facility for Rare Isotope Beams) was originally designed to measure astrophysical reactions that change the mass of a nucleus significantly. We used a novel approach that integrates machine learning with ion-optical simulations to find an ion-optical solution for the separator that enables the measurement of (p,n) reactions, despite the reaction leaving the mass of the nucleus nearly unchanged. A new measurement of the $^{58}$Fe(p,n)$^{58}$Co reaction in inverse kinematics with a 3.66$\pm$0.12 MeV/nucleon $^{58}$Fe beam (corresponding to 3.69$\pm$0.12 MeV proton energy in normal kinematics) yielded a cross-section of 20.3$\pm$6.3 mb and served as a benchmark for the new technique demonstrating its effectiveness in achieving the required performance criteria. This novel approach marks a significant advancement in experimental nuclear astrophysics, as it paves the way for studying astrophysically important (p,n) reactions on unstable nuclei produced at FRIB.

As a step towards the ultimate goal of a high-precision mass measurement of doubly-magic $^{100}$Sn, the mass of $^{103}$Sn was measured at the Low Energy Beam and Ion Trap (LEBIT) located at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). Utilizing the time-of-flight ion cyclotron resonance (ToF-ICR) technique, a mass uncertainty of 3.7~keV was achieved, an improvement by more than an order of magnitude compared to a recent measurement performed in 2023 at the Cooler Storage Ring (CSRe) in Lanzhou. Although the LEBIT and CSRe mass measurements of $^{103}$Sn are in agreement, they diverge from the experimental mass value reported in the 2016 version of the Atomic Mass Evaluation (AME2016), which was derived from the measured $Q_{\beta^+}$ value and the mass of $^{103}$In. In AME2020, this indirectly measured $^{103}$Sn mass was classified as a `seriously irregular mass' and replaced with an extrapolated value, which aligns with the most recent measured values from CSRe and LEBIT. As such, the smoothness of the mass surface is confidently reestablished for $^{103}$Sn. Furthermore, LEBIT's mass measurement of $^{103}$Sn enabled a significant reduction in the mass uncertainties of five parent isotopes which are now dominated by uncertainties in their respective $Q$-values.

The generation of entangled photons from radiative cascades has enabled milestone experiments in quantum information science with several applications in photonic quantum technologies. Significant efforts are being devoted to pushing the performances of near-deterministic entangled-photon sources based on single quantum emitters often embedded in photonic cavities, so to boost the flux of photon pairs. The general postulate is that the emitter generates photons in a nearly maximally entangled state of polarization, ready for application purposes. Here, we demonstrate that this assumption is unjustified. We show that in radiative cascades there exists an interplay between photon polarization and emission wavevector, strongly affecting quantum correlations when emitters are embedded in micro-cavities. We discuss how the polarization entanglement of photon pairs from a biexciton-exciton cascade in quantum dots strongly depends on their propagation wavevector, and it can even vanish for large emission angles. Our experimental results, backed by theoretical modelling, yield a brand-new understanding of cascaded emission for various quantum emitters. In addition, our model provides quantitative guidelines for designing optical microcavities that retain both a high degree of entanglement and collection efficiency, moving the community one step further towards an ideal source of entangled photons for quantum technologies.

AI-generated synthetic media, also called Deepfakes, have significantly influenced so many domains, from entertainment to cybersecurity. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Diffusion Models (DMs) are the main frameworks used to create Deepfakes, producing highly realistic yet fabricated content. While these technologies open up new creative possibilities, they also bring substantial ethical and security risks due to their potential misuse. The rise of such advanced media has led to the development of a cognitive bias known as Impostor Bias, where individuals doubt the authenticity of multimedia due to the awareness of AI's capabilities. As a result, Deepfake detection has become a vital area of research, focusing on identifying subtle inconsistencies and artifacts with machine learning techniques, especially Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Research in forensic Deepfake technology encompasses five main areas: detection, attribution and recognition, passive authentication, detection in realistic scenarios, and active authentication. This paper reviews the primary algorithms that address these challenges, examining their advantages, limitations, and future prospects.

We report the first mass measurement of the proton-halo candidate $^{22}$Al performed with the LEBIT facility's 9.4~T Penning trap mass spectrometer at FRIB. This measurement completes the mass information for the lightest remaining proton-dripline nucleus achievable with Penning traps. $^{22}$Al has been the subject of recent interest regarding a possible halo structure from the observation of an exceptionally large isospin asymmetry [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{125} 192503 (2020)]. The measured mass excess value of $\text{ME}=18\;093.6(7)$~keV, corresponding to an exceptionally small proton separation energy of $S_p = 99.2(1.0)$~keV, is compatible with the suggested halo structure. Our result agrees well with predictions from \textit{sd}-shell USD Hamiltonians. While USD Hamiltonians predict deformation in $^{22}$Al ground-state with minimal $1s_{1/2}$ occupation in the proton shell, a particle-plus-rotor model in the continuum suggests that a proton halo could form at large quadrupole deformation. The Fusion Evaluated Nuclear Data Library (FENDL) is a comprehensive and validated collection of nuclear cross section data coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Nuclear Data Section (NDS). FENDL assembles the best nuclear data for fusion applications selected from available nuclear data libraries and has been under development for decades. FENDL contains sub-libraries for incident neutron, proton, and deuteron cross sections including general purpose and activation files used for particle transport and nuclide inventory calculations. We describe the history, selection of evaluations for the various sub-libraries (neutron, proton, deuteron) with the focus on transport and reactor dosimetry applications, the processing of the nuclear data for application codes, and the development of the TENDL-2017 library which is the currently recommended activation library for FENDL. We briefly describe the IAEA IRDFF library as the recommended library for dosimetry fusion applications. We also present work on validation of the neutron sub-library using a variety of fusion relevant computational and experimental benchmarks. A variety of cross section libraries are used for the validation work including FENDL-2.1, FENDL-3.1d, FENDL-3.2, ENDF/B-VIII.0, and JEFF-3.2 with the emphasis on the FENDL libraries. The results of the experimental validation showed that the performance of FENDL-3.2b is at least as good and in most cases better than FENDL-2.1. Future work will consider improved evaluations developed by the International Nuclear Data Evaluation Network (INDEN). Additional work will be needed to investigate differences in gas production in structural materials. Covariance matrices need to be updated to support the development of fusion technology. Starting from a simple dipole-conserving Hamiltonian model, after introducing a proper quantisation framework, we construct the linear-response theory of a fracton quantum gas. We show how to consistently construct the density operator and we calculate the density-density linear-response function in the limit of large number of (fracton) flavours. We show how to construct its random-phase approximation, from which we calculate the fracton-plasmon dispersion.

We discuss the numerical implementation of two related representations of fermionic density matrices which have been introduced in Annals of Physics 370, 12 (2016). In both of them, the density matrix is expanded in a basis of Bargmann coherent states with weights given by the two phase space distributions. We derive the equations of motion for the distributions when imaginary time evolution is generated by the Hubbard Hamiltonian. One of them is a Grassmann Fokker-Planck equation that can be re-cast into a remarkably simple It\^{o} form involving solely complex variables. In spite of this simple form, we demonstrate that complications arise in numerically computing the expectation value of any observable. These are due to exponential growth in the matrix elements of the stochastic propagator, delicate numerical sensitivity in performing primitive linear algebra operations, and the re-appearance of a sign problem.

In this work we investigate the effect of a constant external, or artificial, magnetic field on the nonlinear response of 2D Weyl materials. We calculate the Landau Levels for tilted cones in 2D Weyl materials by treating the tilting in a perturbative manner, and employ perturbation theory to calculate the tilting-induced correction to the magnetic field induced Landau spectrum. We then calculate the induced current as a function of the tilting coefficients and extract the correspondent nonlinear signal. Then, we analyze how changing tilting parameter affects nonlinear signal. Our findings show the possibility of achieving a significant tunability of the nonlinear response, by suitably engineering the orientation and degree of tilt of Dirac cones in 2D Weyl materials.

We present a study of the nonlinear optical response of twisted bilayer graphene. We discuss the contribution of the Berry phase to the non-linearity when inversion symmetry is broken, thus underlining the interplay between band and real space geometry, and nonlinear response. We also highlight an effect which is characteristic of extreme nonlinear optics: the generation of harmonics in disguise. This effect emerges in twisted bilayer graphene at relatively moderate fields strengths because of the much reduced band width. Our findings contribute to the understanding of the link between geometry and optical properties, as well as of the extreme nonlinear optical regime in twisted bilayer graphene

We present a theoretical model to study the nonlinear optical response of materials with a low-energy spectrum characterised by strongly tilted, type-II, Weyl cones in two dimensions, which we call 2D Weyl materials. Our findings reveal that the tilted nature of the Weyl cones is responsible for the appearance of even harmonics in the nonlinear signal, as well as its strong polarisation dependence. We discuss how it is possible to control such nonlinear response and envision how 2D Weyl materials can be used to realise novel photonic devices for sensing applications.

Linear gas stoppers are widely used to convert high-energy, rare-isotope beams and reaction products into low-energy beams with small transverse emittance and energy spread. Stopping of the high-energy ions is achieved through interaction with a buffer gas, typically helium, generating large quantities of He$^+$/e$^-$ pairs. The Advanced Cryogenic Gas Stopper (ACGS) was designed for fast, efficient stopping and extraction of high-intensity, rare-isotope beams. As part of the design process, a comprehensive particle-in-cell code was developed to optimize the transport and extraction of rare isotopes from the ACGS in the presence of space charge, including He$^+$/e$^-$ dynamics, buffer gas interactions including gas flow, RF carpets, and ion extraction through a nozzle or orifice. Details of the simulations are presented together with comparison to experiment when available.

Isobaric quintets provide the best test of the isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME) and can uniquely identify higher order corrections suggestive of isospin symmetry breaking effects in the nuclear Hamiltonian. The Generalized IMME (GIMME) is a novel microscopic interaction theory that predicts an extension to the quadratic form of the IMME. Only the $A=20, 32$ $T=2$ quintets have the exotic $T_z = -2$ member ground state mass determined to high-precision by Penning trap mass spectrometry. In this work, we establish $A=36$ as the third high-precision $T=2$ isobaric quintet with the $T_z = -2$ member ground state mass measured by Penning trap mass spectrometry and provide the first test of the predictive power of the GIMME. A radioactive beam of neutron-deficient $^{36}$Ca was produced by projectile fragmentation at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The beam was thermalized and the mass of $^{36}$Ca$^+$ and $^{36}$Ca$^{2+}$ measured by the Time of Flight - Ion Cyclotron Resonance method in the LEBIT 9.4 T Penning trap. We measure the mass excess of $^{36}$Ca to be ME$ = -6483.6(56)$ keV, an improvement in precision by a factor of 6 over the literature value. The new datum is considered together with evaluated nuclear data on the $A=36$, $T=2$ quintet. We find agreement with the quadratic form of the IMME given by isospin symmetry, but only coarse qualitative agreement with predictions of the GIMME. A total of three isobaric quintets have their most exotic members measured by Penning trap mass spectrometry. The GIMME predictions in the $T = 2$ quintet appear to break down for $A = 32$ and greater.

We have developed and tested an experimental technique for the measurement of low-energy (p,n) reactions in inverse kinematics relevant to nuclear astrophysics. The proposed setup is located at the ReA3 facility at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. In the current approach, we operate the beam-transport line in ReA3 as a recoil separator while tagging the outgoing neutrons from the (p,n) reactions with the low-energy neutron detector array (LENDA). The developed technique was verified by using the $^{40}$Ar(p,n)$^{40}$K reaction as a probe. The results of the proof-of-principle experiment with the $^{40}$Ar beam show that cross-section measurements within an uncertainty of $\sim$25\% are feasible with count rates up to 7 counts/mb/pnA/s. In this article, we give a detailed description of the experimental setup, and present the analysis method and results from the test experiment. Future plans on using the technique in experiments with the separator for capture reactions (SECAR) that is currently being commissioned are also discussed., Comment: Submitted to NIMA. The Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation (IMME) has been successful at predicting the masses of isobaric analogue states in the same multiplet, while its coefficients are known to follow trends as functions of mass number. The Atomic Mass Evaluation 2016 [Chin. Phys. C 41, 030003 (2017)] $^{44}$V mass value results in an negative $c$ coefficient for the IMME quadratic term. The $b$ and $c$ coefficients can provide constraints for construction of the isospin-nonconserving (INC) Hamiltonians for the $pf$ shell. The excitation energy of the $0^+, T=2$ level in $^{44}$V is currently unknown and can be used to constrain the $^{44}$Cr mass. The aim of the experiment was to perform high-precision mass measurements to resolve the difference between $^{44}$V isomeric and ground states, to test the IMME, and to provide ingredients for identifying the $0^+$, $T=2$ state in $^{44}$V. High-precision Penning trap mass spectrometry was performed at LEBIT, to measure the cyclotron frequency ratios of [$^{44g,m}$VO]$^+$ versus [$^{32}$SCO]$^+$, a reference mass, to extract both the isomeric and ground state masses of $^{44}$V. The mass excess of the ground and isomeric states in $^{44}$V were measured to be $-23\ 804.9(80)$ keV/$\text{c}^2$ and $-23\ 537.0(55)$ keV/$\text{c}^2$. This yielded a new proton separation energy of $S_p$ = 1\ 773(10) keV. The new mass values of $^{44}$V have been used to deduce the IMME $b$ and $c$ coefficients of the lowest $2^+$ and $6^+$ triplets in $A=44$. The $2^+$ $c$ coefficient is verified with the IMME trend and agrees with the shell-model predictions using charge-dependent Hamiltonians. The mirror energy differences were determined between $^{44}$V and $^{44}$Sc, in line with isospin-symmetry. The new value of the proton separation energy determined will be important for the determination of the $0^+$, $T=2$ state in $^{44}$V and for prediction of the mass of $^{44}$Cr., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures
