In the current NISQ-era, one of the major challenges faced by researchers and practitioners lies in figuring out how to combine quantum and classical computing in the most efficient and innovative way. In this paper, we present a mechanism coined as Quantum Initialization for Warehouse Optimization Problem that resorts to D-Wave's Quantum Annealer. The module has been specifically designed to be embedded into already existing classical software dedicated to the optimization of a real-world industrial problem. In this paper, we propose a quantum computing oriented benchmark for combinatorial optimization. This benchmark, coined as QOPTLib, is composed of 40 instances equally distributed over four well-known problems: Traveling Salesman Problem, Vehicle Routing Problem, one-dimensional Bin Packing Problem and the Maximum Cut Problem. The sizes of the instances in QOPTLib not only correspond to computationally addressable sizes, but also to the maximum length approachable with non-zero likelihood of getting a good result. In this regard, it is important to highlight that hybrid approaches are also taken into consideration. Thus, this benchmark constitutes the first effort to provide users a general-purpose dataset. Also in this paper, we introduce a first full solving of QOPTLib using two solvers based on quantum annealing. Satellite mission planning for Earth observation satellites is a combinatorial optimization problem that consists of selecting the optimal subset of imaging requests, subject to constraints, to be fulfilled during an orbit pass of a satellite. The ever-growing amount of satellites in orbit underscores the need to operate them efficiently, which requires solving many instances of the problem in short periods of time. However, current classical algorithms often fail to find the global optimum or take too long to execute. Here, we approach the problem from a quantum computing point of view, which offers a promising alternative that could lead to significant improvements in solution quality or execution speed in the future. To this end, we study a planning problem with a variety of intricate constraints and discuss methods to encode them for quantum computers. Additionally, we experimentally assess the performance of quantum annealing and the quantum approximate optimization algorithm on a realistic and diverse dataset. Our results identify key aspects like graph connectivity and constraint structure that influence the performance of the methods. We explore the limits of today's quantum algorithms and hardware, providing bounds on the problems that can be currently solved successfully and showing how the solution degrades as the complexity grows. Research focused on the conjunction between quantum computing and routing problems has been very prolific in recent years. Most of the works revolve around classical problems such as the Traveling Salesman Problem or the Vehicle Routing Problem. The real-world applicability of these problems is dependent on the objectives and constraints considered. Anyway, it is undeniable that it is often difficult to translate complex requirements into these classical formulations.The main objective of this research is to present a solving scheme for dealing with realistic instances while maintaining all the characteristics and restrictions of the original real-world problem. Thus, a quantum-classical strategy has been developed, coined Q4RPD, that considers a set of real constraints such as a heterogeneous fleet of vehicles, priority deliveries, and capacities characterized by two values: weight and dimensions of the packages. Q4RPD resorts to the Leap Constrained Quadratic Model Hybrid Solver of D-Wave. Hybrid quantum computing is considered the present and the future within the field of quantum computing. Far from being a passing fad, this trend cannot be considered just a stopgap to address the limitations of NISQ-era devices. The foundations linking both computing paradigms will remain robust over time. The contribution of this work is twofold: first, we describe and categorize some of the most frequently used hybrid solvers, resorting to two different taxonomies recently published in the literature. Secondly, we put a special focus on two solvers that are currently deployed in real production and that have demonstrated to be near the real industry. These solvers are the LeapHybridBQMSampler contained in D-Wave's Hybrid Solver Service and Quantagonia's Hybrid Solver. One of the problems in quantitative finance that has received the most attention is the portfolio optimization problem. Regarding its solving, this problem has been approached using different techniques, with those related to quantum computing being especially prolific in recent years. In this study, we present a system called Quantum Computing-based System for Portfolio Optimization with Future Asset Values and Automatic Universe Reduction (Q4FuturePOP), which deals with the Portfolio Optimization Problem considering the following innovations: i) the developed tool is modeled for working with future prediction of assets, instead of historical values; and ii) Q4FuturePOP includes an automatic universe reduction module, which is conceived to intelligently reduce the complexity of the problem. The expectations arising from the latest achievements in the quantum computing field are causing that researchers coming from classical artificial intelligence to be fascinated by this new paradigm. In turn, quantum computing, on the road towards usability, needs classical procedures. Hybridization is, in these circumstances, an indispensable step but can also be seen as a promising new avenue to get the most from both computational worlds. Nonetheless, hybrid approaches have now and will have in the future many challenges to face, which, if ignored, will threaten the viability or attractiveness of quantum computing for real-world applications. To identify them and pose pertinent questions, a proper characterization of the hybrid quantum computing field, and especially hybrid solvers, is compulsory. The Bin Packing Problem is a classic problem with wide industrial applicability. In fact, the efficient packing of items into bins is one of the toughest challenges in many logistic corporations and is a critical issue for reducing storage costs or improving vehicle space allocation. In this work, we resort to our previously published quantum-classical framework known as Q4RealBPP, and elaborate on the solving of real-world oriented instances of the Bin Packing Problem. With this purpose, this paper gravitates on the following characteristics: i) the existence of heterogeneous bins, ii) the extension of the framework to solve not only three-dimensional, but also one- and two-dimensional instances of the problem, iii) requirements for item-bin associations, and iv) delivery priorities. Satellite image acquisition scheduling is a problem that is omnipresent in the earth observation field; its goal is to find the optimal subset of images to be taken during a given orbit pass under a set of constraints. This problem, which can be modeled via combinatorial optimization, has been dealt with many times by the artificial intelligence and operations research communities. However, despite its inherent interest, it has been scarcely studied through the quantum computing paradigm. Taking this situation as motivation, we present in this paper two QUBO formulations for the problem, using different approaches to handle the non-trivial constraints. We compare the formulations experimentally over 20 problem instances using three quantum annealers currently available from D-Wave, as well as one of its hybrid solvers. Fourteen of the tested instances have been obtained from the well-known SPOT5 benchmark, while the remaining six have been generated ad-hoc for this study. Our results show that the formulation and the ancilla handling technique is crucial to solve the problem successfully. Finally, we also provide practical guidelines on the size limits of problem instances that can be realistically solved on current quantum computers.

In this article, a benchmark for real-world bin packing problems is proposed. This dataset consists of 12 instances of varying levels of complexity regarding size (with the number of packages ranging from 38 to 53) and user-defined requirements. In fact, several real-world-oriented restrictions were taken into account to build these instances: i) item and bin dimensions, ii) weight restrictions, iii) affinities among package categories iv) preferences for package ordering and v) load balancing. Besides the data, we also offer an own developed Python script for the dataset generation, coined Q4RealBPP-DataGen. The benchmark was initially proposed to evaluate the performance of quantum solvers. Therefore, the characteristics of this set of instances were designed according to the current limitations of quantum devices. Additionally, the dataset generator is included to allow the construction of general-purpose benchmarks. One of the key challenges of Reinforcement Learning (RL) is the ability of agents to generalise their learned policy to unseen settings. Moreover, training RL agents requires large numbers of interactions with the environment. Motivated by the recent success of Offline RL and Imitation Learning (IL), we conduct a study to investigate whether agents can leverage offline data in the form of trajectories to improve the sample-efficiency in procedurally generated environments. We consider two settings of using IL from offline data for RL: (1) pre-training a policy before online RL training and (2) concurrently training a policy with online RL and IL from offline data. We analyse the impact of the quality (optimality of trajectories) and diversity (number of trajectories and covered level) of available offline trajectories on the effectiveness of both approaches. Across four well-known sparse reward tasks in the MiniGrid environment, we find that using IL for pre-training and concurrently during online RL training both consistently improve the sample-efficiency while converging to optimal policies. Furthermore, we show that pre-training a policy from as few as two trajectories can make the difference between learning an optimal policy at the end of online training and not learning at all. Efficient packing of items into bins is a common daily task. Known as Bin Packing Problem, it has been intensively studied in the field of artificial intelligence, thanks to the wide interest from industry and logistics. Since decades, many variants have been proposed, with the three-dimensional Bin Packing Problem as the closest one to real-world use cases. We introduce a hybrid quantum-classical framework for solving real-world three-dimensional Bin Packing Problems (Q4RealBPP), considering different realistic characteristics, such as: i) package and bin dimensions, ii) overweight restrictions, iii) affinities among item categories and iv) preferences for item ordering. Reinforcement Learning has emerged as a strong alternative to solve optimization tasks efficiently. The use of these algorithms highly depends on the feedback signals provided by the environment in charge of informing about how good (or bad) the decisions made by the learned agent are. Unfortunately, in a broad range of problems the design of a good reward function is not trivial, so in such cases sparse reward signals are instead adopted. The lack of a dense reward function poses new challenges, mostly related to exploration. Imitation Learning has addressed those problems by leveraging demonstrations from experts. In the absence of an expert (and its subsequent demonstrations), an option is to prioritize well-suited exploration experiences collected by the agent in order to bootstrap its learning process with good exploration behaviors. However, this solution highly depends on the ability of the agent to discover such trajectories in the early stages of its learning process. To tackle this issue, we propose to combine imitation learning with intrinsic motivation, two of the most widely adopted techniques to address problems with sparse reward. In this work intrinsic motivation is used to encourage the agent to explore the environment based on its curiosity, whereas imitation learning allows repeating the most promising experiences to accelerate the learning process. This combination is shown to yield an improved performance and better generalization in procedurally-generated environments, outperforming previously reported self-imitation learning methods and achieving equal or better sample efficiency with respect to intrinsic motivation in isolation., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 1 tables

Coherent states, known as displaced vacuum states, play an important role in quantum information processing, quantum machine learning,and quantum optics. In this article, two ways to digitally prepare coherent states in quantum circuits are introduced. First, we construct the displacement operator by decomposing it into Pauli matrices via ladder operators, i.e., creation and annihilation operators. The high fidelity of the digitally generated coherent states is verified compared with the Poissonian distribution in Fock space. Secondly, by using Variational Quantum Algorithms, we choose different ansatzes to generate coherent states. The quantum resources -- such as numbers of quantum gates, layers and iterations -- are analyzed for quantum circuit learning. The simulation results show that quantum circuit learning can provide high fidelity on learning coherent states by choosing appropriate ansatzes.

The Bin Packing Problem (BPP) stands out as a paradigmatic combinatorial optimization problem in logistics. Quantum and hybrid quantum-classical algorithms are expected to show an advantage over their classical counterparts in obtaining approximate solutions for optimization problems. We have recently proposed a hybrid approach to the one dimensional BPP in which a quantum annealing subroutine is employed to sample feasible solutions for single containers. From this reduced search space, a classical optimization subroutine can find the solution to the problem. With the aim of going a step further in the evaluation of our subroutine, in this paper we compare the performance of our procedure with other classical approaches. Concretely we test a random sampling and a random-walk-based heuristic. Employing a benchmark comprising 18 instances, we show that the quantum approach lacks the stagnation behaviour that slows down the classical algorithms. Based on this, we conclude that the quantum strategy can be employed jointly with the random walk to obtain a full sample of feasible solutions in fewer iterations. Despite being considered as the next frontier in computation, Quantum Computing is still in an early stage of development. Indeed, current commercial quantum computers suffer from some critical restraints, such as noisy processes and a limited amount of qubits, among others, that affect the performance of quantum algorithms. Despite these limitations, researchers have devoted much effort to propose different frameworks for efficiently using these Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices. One of these procedures is D'WAVE Systems' quantum-annealer, which can be use to solve optimization problems by translating them into an energy minimization problem. In this context, this work is focused on providing useful insights and information into the behaviour of the quantum-annealer when addressing real-world combinatorial optimization problems. Our main motivation with this study is to open some quantum computing frontiers to non-expert stakeholders. To this end, we perform an extensive experimentation, in the form of a parameter sensitive analysis. This experimentation has been conducted using the Traveling Salesman Problem as benchmarking problem, and adopting two QUBOs: state-of-the-art and a heuristically generated. Our analysis has been performed on a single 7-noded instance, and it is based on more than 200 different parameter configurations, comprising more than 3700 unitary runs and 7 million of quantum reads. Thanks to this study, findings related to the energy distribution and most appropriate parameter settings have been obtained. In the last few years, the research activity around reinforcement learning tasks formulated over environments with sparse rewards has been especially notable. Among the numerous approaches proposed to deal with these hard exploration problems, intrinsic motivation mechanisms are arguably among the most studied alternatives to date. Advances reported in this area over time have tackled the exploration issue by proposing new algorithmic ideas to generate alternative mechanisms to measure the novelty. However, most efforts in this direction have overlooked the influence of different design choices and parameter settings that have also been introduced to improve the effect of the generated intrinsic bonus, forgetting the application of those choices to other intrinsic motivation techniques that may also benefit of them. Furthermore, some of those intrinsic methods are applied with different base reinforcement algorithms (e.g. PPO, IMPALA) and neural network architectures, being hard to fairly compare the provided results and the actual progress provided by each solution. The goal of this work is to stress on this crucial matter in reinforcement learning over hard exploration environments, exposing the variability and susceptibility of avant-garde intrinsic motivation techniques to diverse design factors. Optimization problems is one of the most challenging applications of quantum computers, as well as one of the most relevants. As a consequence, it has attracted huge efforts to obtain a speedup over classical algorithms using quantum resources. Up to now, many problems of different nature have been addressed through the perspective of this revolutionary computation paradigm, but there are still many open questions. In this work, a hybrid classical-quantum approach is presented for dealing with the one-dimensional Bin Packing Problem (1dBPP). The algorithm comprises two modules, each one designed for being executed in different computational ecosystems. First, a quantum subroutine seeks a set of feasible bin configurations of the problem at hand. Secondly, a classical computation subroutine builds complete solutions to the problem from the subsets given by the quantum subroutine. Being a hybrid solver, we have called our method H-BPP. To test our algorithm, we have built 18 different 1dBPP instances as a benchmarking set, in which we analyse the fitness, the number of solutions and the performance of the QC subroutine. In the early stages of human life, babies develop their skills by exploring different scenarios motivated by their inherent satisfaction rather than by extrinsic rewards from the environment. This behavior, referred to as intrinsic motivation, has emerged as one solution to address the exploration challenge derived from reinforcement learning environments with sparse rewards. Diverse exploration approaches have been proposed to accelerate the learning process over single- and multi-agent problems with homogeneous agents. However, scarce studies have elaborated on collaborative learning frameworks between heterogeneous agents deployed into the same environment, but interacting with different instances of the latter without any prior knowledge. Beyond the heterogeneity, each agent's characteristics grant access only to a subset of the full state space, which may hide different exploration strategies and optimal solutions. In this work we combine ideas from intrinsic motivation and transfer learning. Specifically, we focus on sharing parameters in actor-critic model architectures and on combining information obtained through intrinsic motivation with the aim of having a more efficient exploration and faster learning. We test our strategies through experiments performed over a modified ViZDooM's My Way Home scenario, which is more challenging than its original version and allows evaluating the heterogeneity between agents. Our results reveal different ways in which a collaborative framework with little additional computational cost can outperform an independent learning process without knowledge sharing. Quantum Computing is an emerging paradigm which is gathering a lot of popularity in the current scientific and technological community. Widely conceived as the next frontier of computation, Quantum Computing is still at the dawn of its development. Thus, current solving systems suffer from significant limitations in terms of performance and capabilities. Some interesting approaches have been devised by researchers and practitioners in order to overcome these barriers, being quantum-classical hybrid algorithms one of the most often used solving schemes. The main goal of this paper is to extend the results and findings of the recently proposed hybrid Quantum Computing - Tabu Search Algorithm for partitioning problems. To do that, we focus our research on the adaptation of this method to the Asymmetric Traveling Salesman Problem. In overall, we have employed six well-known instances belonging to TSPLIB to assess the performance of Quantum Computing - Tabu Search Algorithm in comparison to QBSolv, a state-of-the-art decomposing solver. Furthermore, as an additional contribution, this work also supposes the first solving of the Asymmetric Traveling Salesman Problem using a Quantum Computing based method. Quantum Computing is considered as the next frontier in computing, and it is attracting a lot of attention from the current scientific community. This kind of computation provides to researchers with a revolutionary paradigm for addressing complex optimization problems, offering a significant speed advantage and an efficient search ability. Anyway, Quantum Computing is still in an incipient stage of development. For this reason, present architectures show certain limitations, which have motivated the carrying out of this paper. In this paper, we introduce a novel solving scheme coined as hybrid Quantum Computing - Tabu Search Algorithm. Main pillars of operation of the proposed method are a greater control over the access to quantum resources, and a considerable reduction of non-profitable accesses. To assess the quality of our method, we have used 7 different Traveling Salesman Problem instances as benchmarking set. The obtained outcomes support the preliminary conclusion that our algorithm is an approach which offers promising results for solving partitioning problems while it drastically reduces the access to quantum computing resources. The main goal of the multitasking optimization paradigm is to solve multiple and concurrent optimization tasks in a simultaneous way through a single search process. For attaining promising results, potential complementarities and synergies between tasks are properly exploited, helping each other by virtue of the exchange of genetic material. This paper is focused on Evolutionary Multitasking, which is a perspective for dealing with multitasking optimization scenarios by embracing concepts from Evolutionary Computation. This work contributes to this field by presenting a new multitasking approach named as Coevolutionary Variable Neighborhood Search Algorithm, which finds its inspiration on both the Variable Neighborhood Search metaheuristic and coevolutionary strategies. The second contribution of this paper is the application field, which is the optimal partitioning of graph instances whose connections among nodes are directed and weighted. This paper pioneers on the simultaneous solving of this kind of tasks. Two different multitasking scenarios are considered, each comprising 11 graph instances. Results obtained by our method are compared to those issued by a parallel Variable Neighborhood Search and independent executions of the basic Variable Neighborhood Search. Much has been said about the fusion of bio-inspired optimization algorithms and Deep Learning models for several purposes: from the discovery of network topologies and hyper-parametric configurations with improved performance for a given task, to the optimization of the model's parameters as a replacement for gradient-based solvers. Indeed, the literature is rich in proposals showcasing the application of assorted nature-inspired approaches for these tasks. In this work we comprehensively review and critically examine contributions made so far based on three axes, each addressing a fundamental question in this research avenue: a) optimization and taxonomy (Why?), including a historical perspective, definitions of optimization problems in Deep Learning, and a taxonomy associated with an in-depth analysis of the literature, b) critical methodological analysis (How?), which together with two case studies, allows us to address learned lessons and recommendations for good practices following the analysis of the literature, and c) challenges and new directions of research (What can be done, and what for?).
