Abstract

We present a study of new 7.7-11.3 $\mu$m data obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope Mid-InfraRed Instrument in the starburst galaxy M 82. In particular, we focus on the dependency of the integrated CO(1-0) line intensity on the MIRI-F770W and MIRI-F1130W filter intensities to investigate the correlation between CO content and the 7.7 and 11.3 $\mu$m features from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in M 82's outflows. To perform our analysis, we identify CO clouds using archival $^{12}$CO($J$=1-0) NOEMA moment 0 map within 2 kpc from the center of M 82, with sizes ranging between $\sim$21 and 270 pc; then, we compute the CO-to-PAH relations for the 306 validated CO clouds. On average, the power-law slopes for the two relations in M 82 are lower than what is seen in local main-sequence spirals. In addition, there is a moderate correlation between $I_{\rm CO(1-0)}$-$I_{\rm 7.7\mu m} /I_{\rm 11.3\mu m}$ for most of the CO cloud groups analyzed in this work. Our results suggest that the extreme conditions in M 82 translate into CO not tracing the full budget of molecular gas in smaller clouds, perhaps as a consequence of photoionization and/or emission suppression of CO molecules due to hard radiation fields from the central starburst.

2. Complete analytical solution to the Cornell potential and heavy quarkonium structure

Abstract

We use the recently proposed supersymmetric expansion algorithm (SEA) to obtain a complete analytical solution to the Schr\"{o}dinger equation with the Cornell potential. We find that the energy levels $E_{nl}(\lambda)$ depend on $n^{2}$ and $L^{2}=l(l+1)$. For a given $n$, the energy decreases with $l$ and the radial probabilities follow the Coulomb pattern but their peaks are shifted toward smaller radius. We study the heavy quarkonium structure on the light of these results, showing that the measured $\bar{b}b$ and $\bar{c}c$ meson masses follow the inverted spectrum pattern predicted by the Cornell potential. Details of the structure of heavy quarkonium like the mean inverse radius and mean squared velocity for the different quarkonium configurations can be obtained from our solution. These details signal to significant relativistic corrections for all the configurations of real heavy quarkonium. We calculate relativistic corrections using perturbation theory finding an expansion in $\alpha^{2}_{s}$ for the heavy quarkonium masses. The mass hierarchies in the fine splittings can be qualitatively understood from this expansion. The quantitative analysis of the Bohr-like levels and of the fine splittings in the $l=0$ sector allow us to make well defined predictions for the masses of some of the missing heavy quarkonium states, to identify the $\psi(4040)$ as the $3^{3}S_{1}$ $\bar{c}c$ state and to identify states that cannot be $\bar{c}c$ states in the $n=3$ level of the measured charmonium spectrum., Comment: 24 pages

Abstract

Blockchain smart contracts play a crucial role in automating and securing agreements in diverse domains such as finance, healthcare, and supply chains. Despite their critical applications, testing these contracts often receives less attention than their development, leaving significant risks due to the immutability of smart contracts post-deployment. A key challenge in the testing of smart contracts is the oracle problem, where the exact expected outcomes are not well defined, complicating systematic testing efforts. Metamorphic Testing (MT) addresses the oracle problem by using Metamorphic Relations (MRs) to validate smart contracts. MRs define how output should change relative to specific input modifications, determining whether the tests pass or fail. In this work, we apply MT to test an Ethereum-based crowdfunding smart contract, focusing on core functionalities such as state transitions and donation tracking. We identify a set of MRs tailored for smart contract testing and generate test cases for these MRs. To assess the effectiveness of this approach, we use the Vertigo mutation testing tool to create faulty versions of the smart contract. The experimental results show that our MRs detected 25.65% of the total mutants generated, with the most effective MRs achieving a mutant-killing rate of 89%. These results highlight the utility of MT to ensure the reliability and quality of blockchain-based smart contracts.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and fraction of longitudinal polarization of $B^0 \to \rho^+ \rho^-$ decays, which have two $\pi^0$'s in the final state. We also measure time-dependent $CP$ violation parameters for decays into longitudinally polarized $\rho^+ \rho^-$ pairs. This analysis is based on a data sample containing $(387\pm6) \times 10^6$ \BBbar pairs collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider in 2019-2022. We obtain ${B}(B^0\to\rho^+\rho^-) = (2.88 ^{+0.23}_{-0.22} {}^{+0.29}_{-0.27}) \times 10^{-5}, f_{L} = 0.921 ^{+0.024}_{-0.025} {}^{+0.017}_{-0.015}$, $S = -0.26\pm0.19\pm0.08$, and $C = -0.02\pm0.12^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We use these results to perform an isospin analysis to constrain the CKM angle $\phi_2$ and obtain two solutions; the result consistent with other Standard Model constraints is $\phi_2 = (92.6^{+4.5}_{-4.8})^\circ$.

Abstract

We present the first search for the lepton flavor-violating decay modes $B^0 \rightarrow K_S^0 \tau^\pm \ell^\mp~(\ell=\mu, e)$ using the 711 fb$^{-1}$ and 365 fb$^{-1}$ data samples recorded by the Belle and Belle II detectors, respectively. We use a hadronic $B$-tagging technique, and search for the signal decay in the system recoiling against the fully reconstructed $B$ meson. We find no evidence for $B^0 \rightarrow K_S^0 \tau^\pm \ell^\mp$ decays and set 90\% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions in the range of $[0.8,\,3.6]\times10^{-5}$.

Abstract

We measure the branching fraction and $\it CP$-violating flavor-dependent rate asymmetry of $B^{0} \to \pi^{0} \pi^{0}$ decays reconstructed using the Belle II detector in an electron-positron collision sample containing $387 \times 10^{6}$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs. Using an optimized event selection, we find $126\pm 20$ signal decays in a fit to background-discriminating and flavor-sensitive distributions. The resulting branching fraction is $(1.25 \pm 0.23)\times 10^{-6}$ and the $\it CP$-violating asymmetry is $0.03 \pm 0.30$.

Abstract

In this article, we survey the primary research on polyhedral computing methods for constrained linear control systems. Our focus is on the modeling power of convex optimization, featured to design set-based robust and optimal controllers. In detail, we review the state-of-the-art techniques for computing geometric structures such as robust control invariant polytopes. Moreover, we survey recent methods for constructing control Lyapunov functions with polyhedral epigraphs as well as the extensive literature on robust model predictive control. Abstract

We measure the branching fraction of the decay $B^0 \to J/\psi \omega$ using data collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. The data contain $(387 \pm 6) \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ meson pairs produced in energy-asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collisions at the $\Upsilon (4S)$ resonance. The measured branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to J/\psi \omega) = \left( 2.16 \pm 0.30 \pm 0.14 \right) \times 10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, is more precise than previous results and constitutes the first observation of the decay with a significance of $6.5$ standard deviations.

Abstract

Using data samples of 983.0~$\rm fb^{-1}$ and 427.9~$\rm fb^{-1}$ accumulated with the Belle and Belle~II detectors operating at the KEKB and SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ colliders, singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $\Xi_c^{+} \to pK_{S}^{0}$, $\Xi_c^+ \to \Lambda \pi^+$, and $\Xi_c^+ \to \Sigma^{0} \pi^+$ are observed for the first time. Abstract

The first generation of transiting planet searches in globular clusters yielded no detections, and in hindsight, only placed occurrence rate limits slightly higher than the measured occurrence rate in the higher-metallicity Galactic thick disk. To improve these limits, we present the first results of a new wide field search for transiting hot Jupiters in the globular cluster 47~Tucanae. We have observed 47~Tuc as part of the Multiband Imaging Survey for High-Alpha Planets (MISHAPS). Using 24 partial and full nights of observations taken with the Dark Energy Camera on the 4-m Blanco telescope at CTIO, we perform a search on 19,930 stars in the outer regions of the cluster. Though we find no clear planet detections, by combining our result with the upper limit enabled by Gilliland et al.'s 2000 Hubble search for planets around an independent sample of 34,091 stars in the inner cluster, we place the strongest limit to date on hot Jupiters with periods of $0.8 \leq P \leq 8.3$ days and $0.5~R_{\rm Jup} \leq R_{\rm P} \leq 2.0~R_{\rm Jup}$ of $f_{\rm HJ} < 0.11\%$, a factor of ${\sim}$4 below the occurrence rate in the \textit{Kepler} field. Our search found 35 transiting planet candidates, though we are ultimately able to rule out each without follow-up observations. Abstract

Multiphase flows, characterized by the presence of particles, bubbles, or droplets dispersed within a fluid, are ubiquitous in natural and industrial processes. Studying densely dispersed flows in 4D (3D + time) at very small scales without introducing perturbations is challenging, but crucial to understand their macroscopic behavior. The penetration power of X-rays and the flux provided by advanced X-ray sources, such as synchrotron-radiation facilities, offer an opportunity to address this need. However, current X-ray methods at these facilities require the rotation of the sample to obtain 4D information, thus disturbing the flow. Here, we demonstrate the potential of using X-ray Multi-Projection Imaging (XMPI), a novel technique to temporally resolve any dense particle suspension flows in 4D, while eliminating the need of sample rotation. By acquiring images of a microparticle-seeded flow from multiple viewing directions simultaneously, we can determine their instantaneous three-dimensional positions, both when flowing in a simple liquid and a highly dense and opaque complex fluid (e.g. blood). Along with the recent progress in AI-supported 4D reconstruction from sparse projections, this approach creates new opportunities for high-speed rotation-free 4D microtomography, opening a new spatiotemporal frontier. With XMPI, it is now feasible to track the movement of individual microparticles within dense suspensions, extending even to the chaotic realms of turbulent flows.

Abstract

We present the study of seven systems, three of which TOI-2295, TOI-2537, and TOI-5110 are newly discovered planetary systems. Through the analysis of TESS photometry, SOPHIE radial velocities, and high-spatial resolution imaging, we found that TOI-2295b, TOI-2537b, and TOI-5110b are transiting warm Jupiters with orbital periods ranging from 30 to 94 d, masses between 0.9 and 2.9 MJ, and radii ranging from 1.0 to 1.5 RJ. Both TOI-2295 and TOI-2537 each harbor at least one additional, outer planet. Their outer planets TOI-2295c and TOI-2537c are characterized by orbital periods of 966.5 +/- 4.3 and 1920^{+230}_{-140} d, respectively, and minimum masses of 5.61^{+0.23}_{-0.24} and 7.2 +/- 0.5 MJ, respectively. We also investigated and characterized the two recently reported warm Jupiters TOI-1836b and TOI-5076b, which we independently detected in SOPHIE RVs. Additionally, we study the planetary candidates TOI-4081.01 and TOI-4168.01. For TOI-4081.01, despite our detection in radial velocities, we cannot rule out perturbation by a blended eclipsing binary and thus exercise caution regarding its planetary nature. On the other hand, we identify TOI-4168.01 as a firm false positive. Finally, we highlight interesting characteristics of these new planetary systems. The transits of TOI-2295b are highly grazing, with an impact parameter of 1.056$^{+0.063}_{-0.043}$. TOI-2537b, in turn, is a temperate Jupiter with an effective temperature of 307+/-15 K and can serve as a valuable low-irradiation control for models of hot Jupiter inflation anomalies. We also detected significant transit timing variations (TTVs) for TOI-2537b, which are likely caused by gravitational interactions with the outer planet TOI-2537c. Abstract

Gravitational wave approximants are widely used tools in gravitational-wave astronomy. They allow for dense coverage of the parameter space of binary black hole (BBH) mergers for purposes of parameter inference, or, more generally, match filtering tasks, while avoiding the computationally expensive full evolution of numerical relativity simulations. However, this comes at a slight cost in terms of accuracy when compared to numerical relativity waveforms, depending on the approach. One way to minimize this is by constructing so-called~\textit{surrogate models} which, instead of using approximate physics or phenomenological formulae, rather interpolate within the space of numerical relativity waveforms. In this work, we introduce~\texttt{NRSurNN3dq4}, a surrogate model for non-precessing BBH merger waveforms powered by neural networks. By relying on the power of deep learning, this approximant is remarkably fast and competitively accurate, as it can generate millions of waveforms in a tenth of a second, while mismatches with numerical relativity waveforms are restrained below $10^{-3}$. We implement this approximant within the~\textsc{bilby} framework for gravitational-wave parameter inference, and show that it it is suitable for parameter estimation tasks.

Abstract

Resolving the early-stage dynamics of exciton formation following non-resonant photoexcitation in time, energy, and momentum is quite challenging due to their inherently fast timescales and the proximity of the excitonic state to the bottom of the conduction band. In this study, by combining time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with \mathit{ab initio} numerical simulations, we capture the timing of the early-stage exciton dynamics in energy and momentum, starting from the photoexcited population in the conduction band, progressing through the formation of free excitons, and ultimately leading to their trapping in lattice deformations. The chosen material is bismuth tri-iodide ($BiI_3$), a layered semiconductor with a rich landscape of excitons in the electronic structure both in bulk and in monolayer form. The obtained results, providing a full characterization of the exciton formation, elucidate the early stages of the physical phenomena underlying the operation of the ultrafast semiconductor device.

Abstract

We investigate the fundamental properties of Minkowski billiards and introduce a new coordinate system $(s,u)$ on the phase space $\mathcal{M}$. In this coordinate system, the Minkowski billiard map $\mathcal{T}$ preserves the standard area form $\omega = ds \wedge du$. We then classify the periodic orbits of Minkowski billiards with period $2$ and derive formulas for the twist coefficient $\tau_1$ for elliptic periodic orbits, expressed in terms of the geometric characteristics of the billiard table. Additionally, we analyze the stability properties of these elliptic periodic orbits.

Abstract

BackgroundDespite recent advances in the biology of IDH-wildtype glioblastoma, it remains a devastating disease with median survival of less than 2 years. However, the molecular underpinnings of the heterogeneous response to the current standard-of-care treatment regimen consisting of maximal safe resection, adjuvant radiation, and chemotherapy with temozolomide remain unknown.MethodsComprehensive histopathologic, genomic, and epigenomic evaluation of paired initial and recurrent glioblastoma specimens from 106 patients was performed to investigate the molecular evolution and cellular phenotypes underlying differential treatment responses.ResultsWhile TERT promoter mutation and CDKN2A homozygous deletion were early events during gliomagenesis shared by initial and recurrent tumors, most other recurrent genetic alterations (eg, EGFR, PTEN, and NF1) were commonly private to initial or recurrent tumors indicating acquisition later during clonal evolution. Furthermore, glioblastomas exhibited heterogeneous epigenomic evolution with subsets becoming more globally hypermethylated, hypomethylated, or remaining stable. Glioblastoma that underwent sarcomatous transformation had shorter interval to recurrence and were significantly enriched in NF1, TP53, and RB1 alterations and the mesenchymal epigenetic class. Patients who developed somatic hypermutation following temozolomide treatment had significantly longer interval to disease recurrence and prolonged overall survival, and increased methylation at 4 specific CpG sites in the promoter region of MGMT was significantly associated with this development of hypermutation. Finally, an epigenomic evolution signature incorporating change in DNA methylation levels across 347 critical CpG sites was developed that significantly correlated with clinical outcomes.ConclusionsGlioblastoma undergoes heterogeneous genetic, epigenetic, and cellular evolution that underlies prognostically different treatment responses.

Abstract

BackgroundPerivascular spaces (PVS) on brain MRI are surrogates for small parenchymal blood vessels and their perivascular compartment, and may relate to brain health. However, it is unknown whether PVS can predict dementia risk and brain atrophy trajectories in participants without dementia, as longitudinal studies on PVS are scarce and current methods for PVS assessment lack robustness and inter-scanner reproducibility.MethodsWe developed a robust algorithm to automatically assess PVS count and size on clinical MRI, and investigated 1) their relationship with dementia risk and brain atrophy in participants without dementia, 2) their longitudinal evolution, and 3) their potential use as a screening tool in simulated clinical trials. We analysed 46,478 clinical measurements of cognitive functioning and 20,845 brain MRI scans from 10,004 participants (71.1 ± 9.7 years-old, 56.6% women) from three publicly available observational studies on ageing and dementia (the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Centre database, and the Open Access Series of Imaging Studies). Clinical and MRI data collected between 2004 and 2022 were analysed with consistent methods, controlling for confounding factors, and combined using mixed-effects models.FindingsOur fully-automated method for PVS assessment showed excellent inter-scanner reproducibility (intraclass correlation coefficients >0.8). Fewer PVS and larger PVS diameter at baseline predicted higher dementia risk and accelerated brain atrophy. Longitudinal trajectories of PVS markers differed significantly in participants without dementia who converted to dementia compared with non-converters. In simulated placebo-controlled trials for treatments targeting cognitive decline, screening out participants at low risk of dementia based on our PVS markers enhanced the power of the trial independently of Alzheimer's disease biomarkers.InterpretationThese robust cerebrovascular markers predict dementia risk and brain atrophy and may improve risk-stratification of patients, potentially reducing cost and increasing throughput of clinical trials to combat dementia.FundingUS National Institutes of Health.

Abstract

Organometallic antimony(V) complexes were prepared as model compounds to better understand the interactions of chiral chelating diols with this metalloid. These complexes feature three aryl groups (meta-xylyl or para-tolyl) and a bidentate trans-2,3-butanediolate. The meta-xylyl and para-tolyl complexes of either enantiomerically pure 2R,3R-butanediolate or 2S,3S-butanediolate (compounds 1-4) crystallized in Sohncke space groups, as expected. In each case, though, pseudoinversion centers were present that mimic higher-symmetry space groups through global pseudosymmetry. We hypothesized that the crystallization of 1:1 mixtures of the enantiomeric complexes would produce crystals in the centrosymmetric space group approximated by the pseudosymmetry. The enantiomerically pure meta-xylyl complexes each crystallized in space group P1 (approximating P1̅), and the racemic compound did indeed crystallize in P1̅. The enantiomerically pure para-tolyl complexes each crystallized in space group P21 (approximating P21/c), but the racemic compound crystallized in P1̅. Although the enantiomerically pure and racemic compounds are not isostructural, there are similarities in their 3D structures that are analyzed.

Abstract

Temporal activity patterns of animals can indicate how individuals respond to changing conditions. Gregarious roosting bats provide an opportunity to compare activity patterns among individuals living in the same location to investigate how reproductive status or sex may influence activity budgets. We examined how the activity patterns of the nectarivorous bat Leptonycteris yerbabuenae vary depending on reproductive conditions, sex, and environmental conditions. We analyzed 5 years of individual mark-resighting data using daily detections of L. yerbabuenae marked with passive integrated transponder tags (PIT-tags) at 3 subterranean roosts on the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. We derived 4 metrics using PIT-tag detections at roost entrances to calculate periods inside the roost and time spent outside the roost (time of emergence, returns to the roost, hours inside the roost, and hours of activity). We found differences among pregnant, lactating, and nonreproductive females for roost returns, hours inside the roost, and hours of activity outside the roost. Lactating females spent the longest time outside the roost, suggesting that the energetic demands of lactation require longer foraging bouts. Contrary to our expectations, lactating females had the fewest returns to the roost during the night, suggesting that lactating females did not shorten foraging bouts to return to nurse pups. Activity patterns differed between females and males and among seasons associated with different food availability. Females had fewer returns during the night and spent more time outside the roost than males. The time of emergence for males was earlier than for females except during the nectar season when most females are reproductively active. Differences in activity patterns among reproductive status, sex, and environmental conditions show how individuals modify behaviors to meet their energetic demands. We demonstrate how mark-resighting data from PIT-tag systems at roost entrances can be used to compare activity patterns of gregarious roosting bats.

20. Measuring direct flexoelectricity at the nanoscale

Abstract

Flexoelectricity is a property of all dielectric materials, where inhomogeneous strain induces electrical polarization. This effect becomes particularly prominent at the nanoscale where larger strain gradients can be obtained. While flexoelectric charges have been measured in mm-scale systems, direct measurements in nanoscale-thickness materials have not yet been achieved. Given that one of the most prominent applications of flexoelectricity is in nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS), confirming the presence and magnitude of the effect at these scales is essential. This study presents the first-ever measurements of flexoelectric-generated charges (direct effect) in nanoscale-thickness materials, using cantilevers with a 50 nm hafnium oxide layer. We confirm that the estimated flexoelectric coefficient from said measurements aligns with the values obtained from complementary experiments using the flexoelectric inverse effect. Additionally, by changing the cantilever geometry (modifying the width of the cantilevers), we demonstrate a 40% increase in the effective flexoelectric coefficient, explained by the interplay of different flexoelectric tensor components. These findings not only validate the presence of flexoelectric effects at the nanoscale but also open the possibility for full flexoelectric transduction of the motion in NEMS/MEMS devices.

Abstract

We deploy a newly-generated set of geometric albedo spectral grids to examine the detectability of methane (CH4) in the reflected-light spectrum of an Earth-like exoplanet at visible and near-infrared wavelengths with a future exoplanet imaging mission. By quantifying the detectability as a function of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and molecular abundance, we can constrain the best methods of detection with the high-contrast space-based coronagraphy slated for the next generation telescopes such as the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO). We used 25 bandpasses between 0.8 and 1.5 microns. The abundances range from a modern-Earth level to an Archean-Earth level, driven by abundances found in available literature. We constrain the optimal 20%, 30%, and 40% bandpasses based on the effective SNR of the data, and investigate the impact of spectral confusion between CH4 and H2O on the detectability of each one. We find that a modern-Earth level of CH4 is not detectable, while an Archean Earth level of CH4 would be detectable at all SNRs and bandpass widths. Crucially, we find that CH4 detectability is inversely correlated with H2o abundance, with required SNR increasing as H2O abundance increases, while H2O detectability depends on CH4 abundance and selected observational wavelength, implying that science requirements for the characterization of Earth-like planet atmospheres in the VIS/NIR should consider the abundances of both species in tandem., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

Abstract

We report measurements of the absolute branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D_s^{\pm} X)$, $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^0/\bar{D}^0 X)$, and $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^{\pm} X)$, where the latter is measured for the first time. The results are based on a 121.4\,fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected at the $\Upsilon(10860)$ resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We reconstruct one $B_s^0$ meson in $e^+e^- \to \Upsilon(10860) \to B_s^{*} \bar{B}_s^{*}$ events and measure yields of $D_s^+$, $D^0$, and $D^+$ mesons in the rest of the event. We obtain $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D_s^{\pm} X) = (68.6 \pm 7.2 \pm 4.0)\%$, $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^0/\bar{D}^0 X) = (21.5 \pm 6.1 \pm 1.8)\%$, and $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^{\pm} X) = (12.6 \pm 4.6 \pm 1.3)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Averaging with previous Belle measurements gives $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D_s^{\pm} X) = (63.4 \pm 4.5 \pm 2.2)\%$ and $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^0/\bar{D}^0 X) = (23.9 \pm 4.1 \pm 1.8)\%$. For the $B_s^0$ production fraction at the $\Upsilon(10860)$, we find $f_s = (21.4^{+1.5}_{-1.7})\%$., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, submitted to JHEP

Abstract

The atmospheres and surfaces of planets show tremendous amount of spatial variation, which has a direct effect on the spectrum of the object, even if this may not be spatially resolved. Here, we apply hyper realistic radiative simulations of Earth as an exoplanet comprising thousands of simulations and study the unresolved spectrum. The GlobES module on the Planetary Spectrum Generator was used, and we parameterized the atmosphere as described in the modern earth retrospective analysis for research and applications, MERRA2, database. The simulations were made into high spatial resolution images and compared to space based observations from the DSCOVR EPIC, at L1, and Himawari8, geostationary, satellites, confirming spatial variations and the spectral intensities of the simulations. The DSCOVR EPIC camera only functions in narrow wavelength bands, but strong agreement is demonstrated. It is shown that aerosols and small particles play an important role in defining Earths reflectance spectra, contributing significantly to its characteristic blue color. Subsequently, a comprehensive noise model is employed to constrain the exposure time required to detect O2, O3 and H2O as a function of varying ground and cloud cover for several concept observatories, including the habitable worlds observatory. Cloud coverage enhances the detectability of planets in reflected light, with important consequences for the design of the future HWO. The HWO concept would require between 3 to 10 times longer to observe the studied features than LUVOIR A but performs better than the HabEx without a starshade. Abstract

We present measurements of $B \to K{}^{*}(892)\gamma$ decays using $365\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data collected from 2019 to 2022 by the Belle~II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The data sample contains $(387 \pm 6) \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ events. We measure branching fractions ($\mathcal{B}$) and $C\!P$ asymmetries ($\mathcal{A}_{C\!P}$) for both $B^{0}\to K{}^{*0}\gamma$ and $B^{+}\to K{}^{*+}\gamma$ decays. The difference in $C\!P$ asymmetries ($\Delta \mathcal{A}_{C\!P}$) and the isospin asymmetry ($\Delta_{0+}$) between these neutral and charged channels are also measured. We obtain the following branching fractions and $C\!P$ asymmetries: $\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \to K{}^{*0}\gamma) = (4.14 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.11 ) \times 10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{B} (B^{+} \to K{}^{*+}\gamma) = (4.02 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.13 )\times 10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{A}_{C\!P} (B^{0} \to K{}^{*0}\gamma) = (-3.3 \pm 2.3 \pm 0.4 )\%$, and $\mathcal{A}_{C\!P} (B^{+} \to K{}^{*+}\gamma) = (-0.7 \pm 2.9 \pm 0.6 )\%$. The measured difference in $C\!P$ asymmetries is $\Delta \mathcal{A}_{C\!P} = (+2.6 \pm 3.8 \pm 0.7 )\%$, and the measured isospin asymmetry is $\Delta_{0+} = (+5.0 \pm 2.0 \pm 1.5 )\%$. The first uncertainties listed are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are consistent with world-average values and theory predictions.

Abstract

The history of gas assembly in early galaxies is reflected in their complex kinematics. While a considerable fraction of galaxies at z~5 are consistent with rotating disks, current studies indicate that the dominant galaxy assembly mechanism corresponds to mergers. Despite the important progress, the dynamical classification of galaxies at these epochs is still limited by observations' resolution. We present a detailed morphological and kinematic analysis of the far-infrared bright main sequence galaxy HZ10 at z=5.65, making use of new high-resolution ($\lesssim0.3$") [CII] 158$\mu$m ALMA and rest-frame optical JWST/NIRSpec observations. These observations reveal a previously unresolved complex morphology and kinematics of the HZ10. We confirm that HZ10 is not a single galaxy but consists of at least three components in close projected separation along the east-to-west direction. We find a [CII] bright central component (C), separated by 1.5 and 4 kpc from the east (E) and west (W) components, respectively. Our [CII] observations resolve the HZ10-C component resulting in a velocity gradient, produced by either rotation or a close-in merger. We test the rotating disk possibility using DysmalPy kinematic modeling and propose three dynamical scenarios for the HZ10 system: (i) a double merger, in which the companion galaxy HZ10-W merges with the disturbed clumpy rotation disk formed by the HZ10-C and E components; (ii) a triple merger, where the companion galaxies, HZ10-W and HZ10-E, merge with the rotation disk HZ10-C; and (iii) a quadruple merger, in which the companion galaxies HZ10-W and HZ10-E merge with the close double merger HZ10-C. Comparing [CII] with JWST/NIRSpec data, we find that [CII] emission closely resembles the broad [OIII] 5007{\AA} emission. Abstract

We measure the time-integrated CP asymmetry in $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{0}_{S}K^{0}_{S}$ decays reconstructed in $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow c\overline{c}$ events collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments. The corresponding data samples have integrated luminosities of 980 fb$^{-1}$ and 428 fb$^{-1}$, respectively. The $D^{0}$ decays are required to originate from the $D^{*+} \rightarrow D^{0}\pi^{+}$ decay, which determines the charm flavor at production time. A control sample of $D^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ decays is used to correct for production and detection asymmetries. Abstract

We present the Variable Star PhasE Curve (VSPEC) Collection, a set of Python packages for simulating combined-light spectroscopic observations of 3-dimensional exoplanet atmospheres in the presence of stellar variability and inhomogeneity. VSPEC uses the Planetary Spectrum Generator's Global Emission Spectra (PSG/GlobES) application along with a custom-built multi-component time-variable stellar model based on a user-defined grid of stellar photosphere models to produce spectroscopic light curves of the planet-host system. VSPEC can be a useful tool for modeling observations of exoplanets in transiting geometries (primary transit, secondary eclipse) as well as orbital phase curve measurements, and is built in a modular and flexible configuration for easy adaptability to new stellar and planetary model inputs. 28. Stochastic optimal control of open quantum systems

Abstract

We address the generic problem of optimal quantum state preparation for open quantum systems. It is well known that open quantum systems can be simulated by quantum trajectories described by a stochastic Schr\"odinger equation. In this context, the state preparation becomes a stochastic optimal control (SOC) problem. The latter requires the solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation, which is, in general, challenging to solve. A notable exception are the so-called path integral (PI) control problems, for which one can estimate the optimal control solution by direct sampling of the cost objective. In this work, we derive a class of quantum state preparation problems that are amenable to PI control techniques, and propose a corresponding algorithm, which we call Quantum Diffusion Control (QDC). Unlike conventional quantum control algorithms, QDC avoids computing gradients of the cost function to determine the optimal control. Instead, it employs adaptive importance sampling, a technique where the controls are iteratively improved based on global averages over quantum trajectories. We also demonstrate that QDC, used as an annealer in the environmental coupling strength, finds high accuracy solutions for unitary (noiseless) quantum control problems. We further discuss the implementation of this technique on quantum hardware. 29. Large language models enabled multiagent ensemble method for efficient EHR data labeling

Abstract

This study introduces a novel multiagent ensemble method powered by LLMs to address a key challenge in ML - data labeling, particularly in large-scale EHR datasets. Manual labeling of such datasets requires domain expertise and is labor-intensive, time-consuming, expensive, and error-prone. To overcome this bottleneck, we developed an ensemble LLMs method and demonstrated its effectiveness in two real-world tasks: (1) labeling a large-scale unlabeled ECG dataset in MIMIC-IV; (2) identifying social determinants of health (SDOH) from the clinical notes of EHR. Trading off benefits and cost, we selected a pool of diverse open source LLMs with satisfactory performance. We treat each LLM's prediction as a vote and apply a mechanism of majority voting with minimal winning threshold for ensemble. We implemented an ensemble LLMs application for EHR data labeling tasks. By using the ensemble LLMs and natural language processing, we labeled MIMIC-IV ECG dataset of 623,566 ECG reports with an estimated accuracy of 98.2%. We applied the ensemble LLMs method to identify SDOH from social history sections of 1,405 EHR clinical notes, also achieving competitive performance. Our experiments show that the ensemble LLMs can outperform individual LLM even the best commercial one, and the method reduces hallucination errors. From the research, we found that (1) the ensemble LLMs method significantly reduces the time and effort required for labeling large-scale EHR data, automating the process with high accuracy and quality; (2) the method generalizes well to other text data labeling tasks, as shown by its application to SDOH identification; (3) the ensemble of a group of diverse LLMs can outperform or match the performance of the best individual LLM; and (4) the ensemble method substantially reduces hallucination errors. 30. Deep kiloparsec view of the molecular gas in a massive star-forming galaxy at cosmic noon

Abstract

We present deep ($\sim$ 20 hr), high-angular resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the $\rm CO ~ (4-3)$ and $\rm [CI] ~ (1-0)$ transitions, along with the rest-frame 630 $\mu$m dust continuum, in BX610 --a massive, main-sequence galaxy at the peak epoch of cosmic star formation $(z = 2.21)$. Combined with deep Very Large Telescope (VLT) SINFONI observations of the H$\alpha$ line, we characterize the molecular gas and star formation activity on kiloparsec scales. Our analysis reveals that the excitation of the molecular gas, as traced by the $L'_{\rm CO ~ (4-3)} / L'_{\rm [CI] ~ (1-0)}$ line luminosity ratio, decreases with increasing galactocentric radius. While the line luminosity ratios in the outskirts are similar to those typically found in main-sequence galaxies at $z \sim 1$, the ratios in the central regions of BX610 are comparable to those observed in local starbursts. There is also a giant extra-nuclear star-forming clump in the southwest of BX610 that exhibits high star formation activity, molecular gas abundance, and molecular gas excitation. Furthermore, the central region of BX610 is rich in molecular gas $(M_{\rm mol} / M_{\rm \star} \approx 1)$; however, at the current level of star formation activity, such molecular gas is expected to be depleted in $\sim$ 450 Myr. This, along with recent evidence for rapid inflow toward the center, suggests that BX610 may be experiencing an evolutionary phase often referred to as wet compaction, which is expected to lead to central gas depletion and subsequent inside-out quenching of star formation activity., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics. 09 pages, 05 figures

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent charge-parity ($CP$) decay-rate asymmetries in $B^0 \to J/\psi \pi^0$ decays. The data sample was collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider in 2019-2022 and contains $(387\pm 6)\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ meson pairs from $\Upsilon(4S)$ decays. We reconstruct $392\pm 24$ signal decays and fit the $CP$ parameters from the distribution of the proper-decay-time difference of the two $B$ mesons. We measure the branching fraction to be $B(B^0 \to J/\psi \pi^0)=(2.00 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-5}$ and the direct and mixing-induced $CP$ asymmetries to be $C_{CP}=0.13 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.03$ and $S_{CP}=-0.88 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.03$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We observe mixing-induced $CP$ violation with a significance of $5.0$ standard deviations for the first time in this mode.

33. Effect of Annealing on Flexoelectricity in Hafnium Oxide (HfO2)

Abstract

Flexoelectricity is universal in all dielectrics, effective at high temperatures, and a promising transduction technique for nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). However, as flexoelectricity is still in its early stages, many aspects require further investigation. Understanding how flexoelectricity depends on material parameters like crystallographic phase and how temperature might affect it, is important for selecting and optimizing the right material for technological applications. This work studies the influence of high-temperature annealing (and the consequent crystallization) in the flexoelectricity of hafnium oxide (HfO2), a material with significant technological relevance. We measure the flexoelectric coefficient for amorphous (not annealed) and annealed (slightly crystalline) phases of HfO2, with samples annealed in nitrogen or oxygen atmospheres. Our results indicate that the amorphous phase of HfO2 exhibits the highest flexoelectric coefficient (105 $\pm$ 10 pC/m), while annealed samples show a significant decrease, with the lowest value in nitrogen-annealed samples (26 $\pm$ 4 pC/m). Samples annealed in an oxygen atmosphere improve flexoelectric properties (54 $\pm$ 6 pC/m) compared to those annealed in nitrogen. Using cross-sectional imaging, X-ray diffraction, resonance frequency characterization, and relative permittivity measurements, we find that annealing promotes crystallization into the tetragonal phase and increases internal stress within the HfO2 layer, while most other parameters remain constant. We attribute the differences in flexoelectricity from the annealed samples to the quantity of oxygen vacancies in hafnium oxide. These oxygen vacancies in hafnium oxide seem to negatively affect the flexoelectric coefficient. This finding can be applied to optimize materials to enhance their flexoelectric properties.

Abstract

This paper introduces a novel track-length extension fitting algorithm for measuring the kinetic energies of inelastically interacting particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe the impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

Abstract

In this paper, we study an asymptotically flat black hole spacetime with weakly nonminimally coupled monopole charge. We analytically and numerically investigate light ray propagation around such a black hole by employing the common Lagrangian formalism. Our analysis encompasses both radial and angular geodesics, for which we present analytical solutions in terms of incomplete Lauricella hypergeometric functions. Additionally, we explore the impact of the coupling constant on geodesic motion. Based on observations from the Event Horizon Telescope, we constrain the black hole parameters, resulting in a coupling constant range of $-0.5\lesssim \alpha\lesssim 0.5$. Abstract

We present a spatially resolved analysis of four star-forming galaxies at $z = 4.44-5.64$ using data from the JWST PRIMER and ALMA-CRISTAL surveys to probe the stellar and inter-stellar medium properties on the sub-kpc scale. In the $1-5\,\mu{\rm m}$ JWST NIRCam imaging we find that the galaxies are composed of multiple clumps (between $2$ and $\sim 8$) separated by $\simeq 5\,{\rm kpc}$, with comparable morphologies and sizes in the rest-frame UV and optical. Using BAGPIPES to perform pixel-by-pixel SED fitting to the JWST data we show that the SFR ($\simeq 25\,{\rm M}_{\odot}/{\rm yr}$) and stellar mass (${\rm log}_{10}(M_{\star}/{\rm M}_{\odot}) \simeq 9.5$) derived from the resolved analysis are in close ($ \lesssim 0.3\,{\rm dex}$) agreement with those obtained by fitting the integrated photometry. In contrast to studies of lower-mass sources, we thus find a reduced impact of outshining of the older (more massive) stellar populations in these normal $z \simeq 5$ galaxies. Our JWST analysis recovers bluer rest-frame UV slopes ($\beta \simeq -2.1$) and younger ages ($\simeq 100\,{\rm Myr}$) than archival values. We find that the dust continuum from ALMA-CRISTAL seen in two of these galaxies correlates, as expected, with regions of redder rest-frame UV slopes and the SED-derived $A_{\rm V}$, as well as the peak in the stellar mass map. We compute the resolved IRX-$\beta$ relation, showing that the IRX is consistent with the local starburst attenuation curve and further demonstrating the presence of an inhomogeneous dust distribution within the galaxies. A comparison of the CRISTAL sources to those from the FirstLight zoom-in simulation of galaxies with the same $M_{\star}$ and SFR reveals similar age and colour gradients, suggesting that major mergers may be important in the formation of clumpy galaxies at this epoch., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, plus 4 page appendix. Abstract

Telescope missions are currently being designed which will make direct imaging of habitable exoplanets possible in the near future, and studies are needed to quantify the detectability of biosignature features in the planet's reflectance spectrum. We simulated the detectability of a NIR-absorbing surface biosignature feature with simulated observations of the nearby exoplanet Proxima Centauri b. We modeled a biosignature spectral feature with a reflectance spectrum based on an anoxygenic photosynthetic bacterial species that has strong absorption at 1 um, which could make it well suited for life on an M-dwarf hosted planet. We modeled the distribution of this organism across the planet's surface based on climate states from a 3D General Circulation Model (GCM), which were Archean and Proterozoic-like exo-Earth analogues. We included the GCM runs' prognostically simulated water clouds and added organic haze into the Archean-like atmospheres. We simulated observations of these Proxima Centauri b scenarios with the LUVOIR-A and B telescope concepts, with LUVOIR-B serving as a proxy to the planned Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO). We calculated integration times necessary to detect the biosignature, and found that it would be detectable on Proxima Centauri b if the organism is moderately abundant (greater than a 1-4% global surface area coverage), as long as the atmosphere is transmitting in the wavelength range under consideration. Small amounts of methane, clouds, and haze do not greatly impede detectability. We found preliminary evidence that such a biosignature would be detectable on exoplanets within 15 pc, but further investigations are needed to corroborate this., Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Generative models for level generation have shown great potential in game production. However, they often provide limited control over the generation, and the validity of the generated levels is unreliable. Despite this fact, only a few approaches that learn from existing data provide the users with ways of controlling the generation, simultaneously addressing the generation of unsolvable levels. %One of the main challenges it faces is that levels generated through automation may not be solvable thus requiring validation. are not always engaging, challenging, or even solvable. This paper proposes Avalon, a novel method to improve models that learn from existing level designs using difficulty statistics extracted from gameplay. In particular, we use a conditional variational autoencoder to generate layouts for match-3 levels, conditioning the model on pre-collected statistics such as game mechanics like difficulty and relevant visual features like size and symmetry. Our method is general enough that multiple approaches could potentially be used to generate these statistics. We quantitatively evaluate our approach by comparing it to an ablated model without difficulty conditioning. Additionally, we analyze both quantitatively and qualitatively whether the style of the dataset is preserved in the generated levels. Abstract

We use NIRCam imaging from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) to study the ionising properties of a sample of 15721 galaxies at $3 \leq z_{\rm{phot}} \leq 9$, 90\% complete in stellar mass down to log(M$_{\star}$/[M$_{\odot}$])$\approx 7.5$. Out of the full sample, 1620 of the galaxies have spectroscopic redshift measurements from the literature. We use the spectral energy distribution fitting code \texttt{Prospector} to fit all available photometry and infer galaxy properties. We find a significantly milder evolution of the ionising photon production efficiency (\xion\/) with redshift and UV magnitude than previously reported. Interestingly, we observe two distinct populations in \xion\/, distinguished by their burstiness (given by SFR$_{10}$/SFR$_{100}$). Both populations show the same evolution with $z$ and M$_{\rm{UV}}$, but have a different \xion\/ normalisation. We convolve the more representative $\log(\xi_{\rm{ion}} (z,\text{M}_{\rm{UV}}))$ relations (accounting for $\sim96$\% of the sample), with luminosity functions from literature, to place constraints on the cosmic ionising photon budget. By combining our results, we find that one of our models can match the observational constraints from the \lya\/ forest at $z\lesssim6$. We conclude that galaxies with M$_{\rm{UV}}$ between $-16$ and $-20$, adopting a reasonable escape fraction, can produce enough ionising photons to ionise the Universe, without exceeding the required ionising photon budget., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS. 23 pages, 21 figures

41. Learning Extension through Firsthand Experiences of Graduate Students in an Amish Community

Abstract

Two graduate students and a faculty member of the Department of Entomology at the University of Kentucky developed and implemented a two-year extension program aimed to train Amish farmers on identification and management of their major agricultural problems. Students conducted periodical visits to the community, inquired about farmers' needs, and identified relevant issues, which were outlined to plan two field days offered in their properties. Amish farmers gained knowledge on diverse topics and were eager to receive handouts and publications. Amish were open to apply new technologies and implement them without main changes in their traditional methods of agriculture. The graduate students acquired skills in developing and implementing outreach extension program. Communication and relationship continued with this community after this program was completed.

42. I Think I Can, I Hope I Can: Professional Efficacy, Hope, and Identity among Undergraduate Engineering Students

Abstract

This study explored relationships between hope, self-efficacy, and professional identity among a group of undergraduate engineering students at a western institution of higher education in the United States (US) over the span of an academic semester. We conducted a mixed-methods study with undergraduate engineering students to measure aspects of hope, and self-efficacy. Furthermore, we investigated how they perceived their own professional identity in terms of what it means to be an engineer and engage in the profession. Participants reported high levels of hope at mid- and end-of-semester. Those pursuing degrees requiring professional licensure reported higher levels of willpower compared to students pursuing non-licensure degrees. Students experienced increased self-efficacy towards engineering skills and processes over time. Participants' perceptions of engineering professional identity remained consistent over the semester. Their sense of engineering work and goal orientation fell primarily into one of three archetypes: Pragmatic, Creative, and Altruistic.

43. Investigating Blended Learning Interactions in Philippine Schools through the Community of Inquiry Framework

Abstract

This article reports on an exploratory case study that applied the Community of Inquiry framework in the K-12 Philippine setting, where there are limited studies on blended learning interactions and experiences. The study examined blended learning interactions across three schools in the Philippine K-12 system to investigate the following: (1) what is the nature of interactions in the blended learning classes? and (2) how do the interactions indicate learning communities as outcomes of blended learning? A mixed method approach to data collection was undertaken, which included student surveys, focus group discussions, teacher interviews, and class observations. The constant comparative analysis uncovered thick descriptions of blended learning interactions. Findings uncovered three themes on blended learning across levels of interactions within the Community of Inquiry presences: (i) best of both worlds, (ii) learning anytime and anywhere, and (iii) learning with technology. Descriptive statistics indicated high mean ratings across the presences, revealing positive experiences afforded by the use of various technologies and social media. The study concluded that learning communities are an outcome of blended learning interactions. A Developmental Model for K-12 Blended Learning Communities was recommended to inform teacher professional development on pedagogies and practices supportive of learning community building in contexts where blended learning may continue to thrive.

44. Students Helping Students: Implementation of Elementary Math Facts Fluency Interventions by High Schoolers

Abstract

Many schools face barriers that hinder access to services, including limited funding and staff trained in evidence-based interventions. In particular, rural schools must provide targeted intervention to promote academic growth and narrow achievement gaps despite these barriers. One seldom-considered solution to ease the resource costs in the provision of intervention services is to provide high school students with the training and supervision necessary to carry them out. Thirty elementary students participated in an explicit timing intervention administered by either a high school student or graduate student in school psychology. A 2 × 2 mixed factorial ANOVA found significant growth from pre- to post-test with no effects of interventionist education level. These findings imply that school-based interventionists may be able to expand the reach of their practice by recruiting and training older students to carry out interventions.

Abstract

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic exposed several health disparities experienced by underserved and Latino/a communities, including inequitable access to COVID-19 testing.Objective and goalsTo describe the utilization of a community-driven and culturally-tailored testing model on COVID-19 testing in an underserved Latino/a community in San Diego.MethodsThe Community-driven Optimization of COVID-19 testing to Reach and Engage Underserved Areas for Testing Equity (CO-CREATE) project implemented a community co-designed COVID-19 testing program in partnership with a Federally Qualified Health Center in a US/Mexico border community.ResultsBetween May 2021 and March 2023, 24, 422 COVID-19 PCR tests were administered to 13,253 individuals, among whom 93% percent identified as Latino/a, 57% spoke Spanish in the home, and 38% resided in our target community adjacent to the US/Mexico border, San Ysidro. Based on a subset of available county testing data, CO-CREATE accounted for nearly 12% of all COVID-19 tests reported for San Ysidro residents. Over the course of the project, we estimated that nearly 17% of all San Ysidro residents were tested for COVID-19 through the CO-CREATE project.ConclusionThese findings highlight the success and reach of this culturally responsive and community co-designed COVID-19 testing program, within a Latino/a border community. Future public health interventions should focus on identifying testing barriers and design appropriate strategies to ensure equitable access to resources and testing uptake for all community members.

Abstract

Cancer genomes are rife with genetic variants; one key outcome of this variation is widespread gain-of-cysteine mutations. These acquired cysteines can be both driver mutations and sites targeted by precision therapies. However, despite their ubiquity, nearly all acquired cysteines remain unidentified via chemoproteomics; identification is a critical step to enable functional analysis, including assessment of potential druggability and susceptibility to oxidation. Here, we pair cysteine chemoproteomics-a technique that enables proteome-wide pinpointing of functional, redox sensitive, and potentially druggable residues-with genomics to reveal the hidden landscape of cysteine genetic variation. Our chemoproteogenomics platform integrates chemoproteomic, whole exome, and RNA-seq data, with a customized two-stage false discovery rate (FDR) error controlled proteomic search, which is further enhanced with a user-friendly FragPipe interface. Chemoproteogenomics analysis reveals that cysteine acquisition is a ubiquitous feature of both healthy and cancer genomes that is further elevated in the context of decreased DNA repair. Reference cysteines proximal to missense variants are also found to be pervasive, supporting heretofore untapped opportunities for variant-specific chemical probe development campaigns. As chemoproteogenomics is further distinguished by sample-matched combinatorial variant databases and is compatible with redox proteomics and small molecule screening, we expect widespread utility in guiding proteoform-specific biology and therapeutic discovery.

48. A pre-post trial to examine biological mechanisms of the effects of time-restricted eating on symptoms and quality of life in bipolar disorder.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The primary objective of this trial is to examine the mechanisms of time-restricted eating (TRE) as an adjunct to psychiatric care for people with bipolar disorder (BD) with sleep or circadian disruptions. This study builds on prior studies of circadian disruption in BD as well as growing evidence that TRE improves circadian functioning. METHODS: One-hundred fifty participants diagnosed with BD 1 or II will be recruited via advertising in the local community. Main inclusion criteria include: obtaining medical treatment for BD; current sleep or circadian problems; self-reported eating period of ≥ 12 h; no eating disorder or other health conditions that would hinder or limit the safety of following TRE; and not currently experiencing a mood episode, acute suicidality, psychosis, alcohol or substance use disorder. Participants will be asked to complete a baseline period in which daily food intake is logged online for two weeks. After baseline, participants will be asked to follow TRE for 8 weeks and to continue to complete daily food logging during this time. Symptom severity interviews will be conducted by phone or videoconference at baseline, mid-intervention (6 weeks post-baseline), end of intervention (10 weeks post-baseline), and 6 months post-baseline. Self-rated symptom severity and quality of life data will be gathered online at the same time points as symptom severity interviews, and at 16 weeks post-baseline (6 weeks after the TRE period ends). To assess potential mechanisms of change, we will examine the change in diurnal amplitude of clock gene expression as a primary mediator at 8 weeks compared to baseline. We will further test whether diurnal amplitude of clock gene expression is predictive above and beyond the role of two covariate potential mediators, glucose tolerance and inflammation at 8 weeks relative to baseline. To provide an index of whether TRE successfully decreases emotional lability, participants will be asked to complete 5 mood assessments per day for 7 days at baseline and at 10 weeks. These mood assessments will be optional. DISCUSSION: The planned research will provide novel and important information on whether TRE improves sleep/circadian rhythm problems, along with reductions in mood symptoms and improvements in quality of life, for individuals with BD. Abstract

Meningiomas are associated with inactivation of NF2/Merlin, but approximately one-third of meningiomas with favorable clinical outcomes retain Merlin expression. Biochemical mechanisms underlying Merlin-intact meningioma growth are incompletely understood, and non-invasive biomarkers that may be used to guide treatment de-escalation or imaging surveillance are lacking. Here, we use single-cell RNA sequencing, proximity-labeling proteomic mass spectrometry, mechanistic and functional approaches, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) across meningioma xenografts and patients to define biochemical mechanisms and an imaging biomarker that underlie Merlin-intact meningiomas. We find Merlin serine 13 (S13) dephosphorylation drives meningioma Wnt signaling and tumor growth by attenuating inhibitory interactions with β-catenin and activating the Wnt pathway. MRI analyses show Merlin-intact meningiomas with S13 phosphorylation and favorable clinical outcomes are associated with high apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). These results define mechanisms underlying a potential imaging biomarker that could be used to guide treatment de-escalation or imaging surveillance for patients with Merlin-intact meningiomas.

Abstract

Data rates and volume for mobile communication are ever-increasing with the growing number of users and connected devices. With the deployment of 5G and 6G on the horizon, wireless communication is advancing to higher frequencies and larger bandwidths enabling higher speeds and throughput. Current micro-acoustic resonator technology, a key component in radiofrequency front end filters, is struggling to keep pace with these developments. This work presents a novel acoustic resonator architecture enabling multi-frequency, low-loss, and wideband filtering for the 5G and future 6G bands located above 3 GHz. Thanks to the exceptional performance of these resonators, filters for the 5G n77 and n79 bands are demonstrated, exhibiting fractional bandwidths of 13% and 25% respectively with low insertion loss of around 1 dB. With its unique frequency scalability and wideband capabilities, the reported architecture offers a promising option for filtering and multiplexing in future mobile devices., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures
