Abstract

Designers can reduce thermocouple-linearization costs while achieving a worst-case system response of less than 4 degrees centigrade by combining a scaling amplifier having the proper offset with a second-order-polynomial curve-fitting circuit. The squared term of the second-order polynomial provides a low-cost analog-multiplier integrated circuit (IC). The IC uses a chromel-constantan, or type-E, thermocouple to sense temperatures from 0 to 650 degrees. A series-opposing correction voltage added to the sensor cancels the cold-junction error voltage; a cold-junction compensator tracks the ambient temperature and produces this temperature-dependent, which has the same sensitivity as the cold-junction thermocouple junctions.

Abstract

In recent years senior design or capstone projects incorporating a microcontroller as part of their solution have become commonplace because 8-bit microcontrollers are low-cost signal processing tools, which are widely available and can be programmed in many of today's popular languages like C and to a lesser extent BASIC. This is especially important since it is more convenient to develop software algorithms--and create prototype-level solutions--in a high-level language than in, a low-level language like assembly. But including sensors to add decision-making capabilities based on measurements--or "intelligence"--to these types of projects introduces its own design challenges. Often developing an application-specific sensor and the signal conditioning circuitry (SCC) needed to output a voltage that can take full advantage of the input span of a µC's analog-to-digital converter (ADC) can challenge a student's design skills. This paper presents a new systematic approach to both sensor and analog interface (AI) circuit design using basic graphical representations and some elemental mathematics. Furthermore, the approach presented here is sufficiently general to apply to the design of many linear sensor systems. In addition, a digital potentiometer--and the software code segment needed to control it--is included to provide an auto-zero capability, which is an important feature for the sensor system design being presented in this paper.
