Abstract

Intermediate band solar cells (IBSCs) pursue the increase in efficiency by absorbing below-bandgap energy photons while preserving the output voltage. Experimental IBSCs based on quantum dots have already demonstrated that both below-bandgap photon absorption and the output voltage preservation, are possible. However, the experimental work has also revealed that the below-bandgap absorption of light is weak and insufficient to boost the efficiency of the solar cells. The objective of this work is to contribute to the study of this absorption by manufacturing and characterizing a quantum dot intermediate band solar cell with a single quantum dot layer with and without light trapping elements. Using one-dimensional substrate texturing, our results show a three-fold increase in the absorption of below bandgap energy photons in the lowest energy region of the spectrum, a region not previously explored using this approach. Furthermore, we also measure, at 9K, a distinguished split of quasi-Fermi levels between the conduction and intermediate bands, which is a necessary condition to preserve the output voltage of the cell., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

5. Design of an indium arsenide cell for near-field thermophotovoltaic devices

Abstract

An indium arsenide photovoltaic cell with gold front contacts is designed for use in a near-field thermophotovoltaic (NF-TPV) device consisting of millimeter-size surfaces separated by a nanosize vacuum gap. The device operates with a doped silicon radiator maintained at a temperature of 800 K. The architecture of the photovoltaic cell, including the emitter and base thicknesses, the doping level of the base, and the front contact grid parameters, are optimized for maximizing NF-TPV power output. This is accomplished by solving radiation and charge transport in the cell via fluctuational electrodynamics and the minority charge carrier continuity equations, in addition to accounting for the shading losses due to the front contacts and additional series resistance losses introduced by the front contacts and the substrate. The results reveal that these additional loss mechanisms negatively affect NF-TPV performance in a non-negligible manner, and that the maximum power output is a trade-off between shading losses and series resistance losses introduced by the front contacts. For instance, when the cell is optimized for a 1 x 1 mm2 device operating at a vacuum gap of 100 nm, the losses introduced by the front contacts reduce the maximum power output by a factor of ~ 2.5 compared to the idealized case when no front contact grid is present. If the optimized grid for the 1 x 1 mm2 device is scaled up for a 5 x 5 mm2 device, the maximum power output is only increased by a factor of ~ 1.08 with respect to the 1 x 1 mm2 case despite an increase of the surface area by a factor of 25. This work demonstrates that the photovoltaic cell in a NF-TPV device must be designed not only for a specific radiator temperature, but also for specific gap thickness and device surface area., Comment: 48 pages; 6 figures; 4 tables; 2 supplementary figures

Abstract

Plasmonic antennas are attractive optical structures for many applications in nano and quantum technologies. By providing enhanced interaction between a nanoemitter and light, they efficiently accelerate and direct spontaneous emission. One challenge, however, is the precise nanoscale positioning of the emitter in the structure. Here we present a laser etching protocol that deterministically positions a single colloidal CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dot emitter inside a subwavelength plasmonic patch antenna with three-dimensional nanoscale control. By exploiting the properties of metal-insulator-metal structures at the nanoscale, the fabricated single emitter antenna exhibits an extremely high Purcell factor (>72) and brightness enhancement by a factor of 70. Due to the unprecedented quenching of Auger processes and the strong acceleration of multiexciton emission, more than 4 photons per pulse can be emitted by a single quantum dot. Abstract

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of mangrove forests and oyster reefs on reducing the damages from typhoons in hypothetical land reclamation scenarios in Atimonan, Philippines. Storm surge simulations were ran using ADCIRC and SWAN coupled model on the local government unit’s (LGU) land reclamation plan and the proposed crenulate bay reclamation plan, both with concrete seawall, mangrove forests and oyster reefs. Inputs to the model include modified topography and bathymetry, coastline, land cover, typhoon Durian data and tidal potential constituents. Simulations show that the crenulate bay reclamation plan is better by 39.15% than the LGU’s land reclamation plan on reducing typhoon winds and storm surge inundation extent induced by Typhoon Durian. However, this advantage comes with an additional implementation cost of 11.02%. This study is envisioned to help the land reclamation project of Atimonan LGU to be resilient against typhoon winds and coastal inundation.

Abstract

This book combines different points of view about cultural digital contents public policies, that often take divergent paths. Various experiences on integrated dissemination are presented: based on cultural heritage digital preservation projects (Memoria de Madrid); collaborative content creation (CTpedia); multimedia production (Canal Historia del Portal Región de Murcia Digital); and an open access digital library and harvester (Biblioteca Digital de la Región de Murcia). A conceptual framework for local digital content initiatives and strategies is also exposed.
