9. Virtual reality treatment of claustrophobia: a case report

Abstract

The efficacy of a treatment for claustrophobia using only Virtual Reality (VR) exposure was examined. The subject was a 43-year-old female who suffered from clinically significant distress and impairment and sought psychological therapy. Eight individual VR graded exposure sessions were conducted. All self-report measures were reduced following VR exposure and were maintained at one month follow-up. The necessity of a theoretical framework for this new medium for exposure therapy is discussed.

Abstract

Varios catalizadores a base de zeolita Na-ZSM-5 intercambiada con Pd, obtenidos por dos procedimientos diferentes, se estudiaron en la combustión de metano con aire en exceso (1% CH4, 18% 02, 81% N2). El rango de temperatura fue 100-500°C. Se observó que tanto la cantidad de paladio introducida en la zeolita como la actividad catalítica dependieron del procedimiento de intercambio utilizado.

Abstract

En este artículo se pretende resaltar el papel de la catálisis en el mejoramiento del medio ambiente. Se presenta una revisión de los recientes progresos en el uso de ciertos materiales zeolíticos como catalizadores para la eliminación del óxido nítrico de sistemas de combustión. Se indican los métodos más empleados para su remoción, así como las ventajas y desventajas de las soluciones propuestas en la actualidad. Se enfatiza, ade­más, sobre la necesidad de realizar más investigación que conduzca al desarrollo de un catalizador activo para la descomposición de óxido nítrico en sus elementos.

Abstract

Study of diffraction gratings through holographic cells, which correspond to micro circular zones, encoded with amplitude sinusoidal gratings. The random distribution of cells on the surface of hologram and its orientation of gratings per cell, produce in the diffracted orders a random distribution. We made a study of the behavior of the random modulation of diffracted orders, as a function of the orientation of code grating per cell.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to test the individual association of the 5-HTT, BDNF, and GABRA6 genes with anxiety-related traits and to explore putative GxG interactions in a healthy sample. Method: A sample of 937 individuals from the general population completed the TCI questionnaire; a subsample of 553 individuals also filled in a brief version of the NEO inventory. The whole sample was genotyped for the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism (5- HTT gene), the Val66Met polymorphism (BDNF gene) and the T1521C polymorphism (GABRA6 gene). Results: Individuals carrying the TTgenotype of the T1512C polymorphism presented slightly higher scores for Harm Avoidance ( HA ) than C allele carriers (F=2.96, p=0.051). In addition, there was a significant GxG interaction on HA between the 5-HTTLPR and Val66Met polymorphisms (F=3.4, p=0.009). Conclusion: GABRA6 emerges as a putative gene may be involved in the variability of HA. The effect of a significant GxG interaction between the 5-HTT and BDNF genes on HA could explain part of the genetic basis underlying anxiety-related traits.

Abstract

Resumen tomado de la revista Se presenta un estudio de caso en el que se pone de manifiesto la utilidad de la realidad virtual para el tratamiento de la claustrofobia. Se describe en detalle el software diseñado para el tratamiento de la clasutrofobia, el protocolo de evaluación y de tratamiento aplicados, así como el procedimiento seguido, paso a paso. En el tratamiento se utilizó exposición virtual y tácticas de realidad aumentada. Se observa que la exposición virtual puede resultar un elemento facilitador para llevar a cabo la exposición 'in vivo'. Se subraya el progreso logrado por esta tecnología en los últimos años y su utilidad en el campo de los tratamientos psicológicos. 31. Phytoplankton biomass and zooplankton abundance on the south coast of Portugal (Sagres), with special reference to spawning of Loligo vulgaris

Abstract

The importance of the south-west coast of Portugal as a spawning ground for the long-finned squid, Loligo vulgaris, was investigated between May 1993 and May 1994 at a site 3 Km East of Sagres. Hydrographic (temperature and salinity) observations were registered in situ and water samples were collected for laboratory determinations of chlorophyll a. Zooplankton was sampled with a 500 mm plankton net during 10mn trawls. Hydrographic and biological information was related to the occurrence of L. vulgaris egg masses at the site. The values of water temperature ranged from 13.0º C in January to 19.2º C in July, and the salinity varied between 35.3o/oo in May of 1993 and 38.0 o/oo, in November, December and March. The highest values for phytoplankton biomass were recorded in September and May, whereas the maximum zooplankton abundance was recorded between July and September. The most important zooplankton groups included cladocerans, copepods, crustacean larvae, fish eggs and appendicularians. We have concluded that the highest values for zooplankton abundance were recorded when the greater number of egg masses of L. vulgaris were observed.

Abstract

Iodonium ions, o-alkynyl-substituted carbonyl compounds, and alkynes react to give 1-iodonaphthalene derivatives featuring interesting substitution patterns. The reaction with alkenes instead of acetylenes affords related naphthyl ketone derivatives. These two metal-free processes are conducted at room temperature and furnish products in a regioselective manner.
