Abstract

The influence of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been widely spread over the last years, establishing new public and privat policies. Education has also been experiencing this change by aligning with the previous goals. In this chapter, we briefly summarize the main activities conducted under the Grant APS22.2003 'Service-based learning of the SDGs related to a responsible production and consumption (A-BASE-DE-PROS)', which uses the SDG 12 as a guide line to raise the awareness of the importance of the 2030 Agenda among undergraduate and secondary-school students. In general, the service-based learning has increased the knowledge of the SDGs among the students. 6. Digital Phenotyping of Student Mental Health during COVID-19: An Observational Study of 100 College Students

Abstract

Objective: This study assessed the feasibility of capturing smartphone based digital phenotyping data in college students during the COVID-19 pandemic with the goal of understanding how digital biomarkers of behavior correlate with mental health. Participants: Participants were 100 students enrolled in 4-year universities. Methods: Each participant attended a virtual visit to complete a series of gold-standard mental health assessments, and then used a mobile app for 28 days to complete mood assessments and allow for passive collection of GPS, accelerometer, phone call, and screen time data. Students completed another virtual visit at the end of the study to collect a second round of mental health assessments. Results: In-app daily mood assessments were strongly correlated with their corresponding gold standard clinical assessment. Sleep variance among students was correlated to depression scores ([rho] = 0.28) and stress scores ([rho] = 0.27). Conclusions: Digital Phenotyping among college students is feasible on both an individual and a sample level. Studies with larger sample sizes are necessary to understand population trends, but there are practical applications of the data today.

Abstract

In this paper we consider suitable families of power series distributed random variables, and we study their asymptotic behavior in the fashion of large (and moderate) deviations. We also present two examples of fractional counting processes, where the normalizations of the involved power series distributions can be expressed in terms of the Prabhakar function. The first example allows to consider the counting process in \cite{PoganyTomovski}, the second one is inspired by a model studied in \cite{GarraOrsingherPolito}.

Realization of uncertainty of prices is captured by volatility, that is the tendency of prices to vary along a period of time. This is generally measured as standard deviation of daily returns. In this paper we propose and investigate the application of fuzzy transform and its inverse as an alternative measure of volatility. The measure obtained is compatible with the definition of risk measure given by Luce. 26. On the local approximation of mean densities of random closed sets

Abstract

Mean density of lower dimensional random closed sets, as well as the mean boundary density of full dimensional random sets, and their estimation are of great interest in many real applications. Only partial results are available so far in current literature, under the assumption that the random set is either stationary, or it is a Boolean model, or it has convex grains. We consider here non-stationary random closed sets (not necessarily Boolean models), whose grains have to satisfy some general regularity conditions, extending previous results. We address the open problem posed in (Bernoulli 15 (2009) 1222-1242) about the approximation of the mean density of lower dimensional random sets by a pointwise limit, and to the open problem posed by Matheron in (Random Sets and Integral Geometry (1975) Wiley) about the existence (and its value) of the so-called specific area of full dimensional random closed sets. Abstract

Many real phenomena may be modelled as random closed sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$, of different Hausdorff dimensions. In many real applications, such as fiber processes and $n$-facets of random tessellations of dimension $n\leq d$ in spaces of dimension $d\geq1$, several problems are related to the estimation of such mean densities. In order to confront such problems in the general setting of spatially inhomogeneous processes, we suggest and analyze an approximation of mean densities for sufficiently regular random closed sets. We show how some known results in literature follow as particular cases. Abstract

Inspired by issues of formal kinetics in materials science, we consider a class of processes with density with respect to an inhomogeneous finite Poisson point process, which may be regarded as a generalization of the classical Strauss hard-core process. We prove expressions for the intensity measure and the void probabilities, together with upper and lower bounds. A discussion on some special cases of interest, links with literature and a comparison between Matérn I and Strauss hard-core process are also provided. We apply such a special class of point processes in modeling patterns of non-overlapping grains and in the study of the mean volume density of particular birth-and-growth processes. Abstract

The mean density of a random closed set $\Theta$ in $\R^d$ with Hausdorff dimension $n$ is the Radon-Nikodym derivative of the expected measure $\E[\h^n(\Theta\cap\cdot)]$ induced by $\Theta$ with respect to the usual $d$-dimensional Lebesgue measure. We consider here inhomogeneous Boolean models with lower dimensional typical grain. Under general regularity assumptions on the typical grain, related to the existence of its Minkowski content, and on the intensity measure of the underlying Poisson point process, we prove an explicit formula for the mean density. The proof of such formula provides as by-product estimators for the mean density in terms of the empirical capacity functional, which turns to be closely related to the well known random variable density estimation by histograms in the extreme case $n=0$. Abstract

BackgroundIncreasing screen time exposure from digital devices like smartphones has shown a variety of mixed associations with cognition, behavior, and well-being in adults and children but little is known about its associations with symptomatology in individuals with serious mental illness. ObjectiveTo determine the range of associations between screen time and symptoms of individuals with mental illness, we utilized a method called specification curve analysis. MethodsIn this observational study, we recruited smartphone-owning adults (≥18 years old) with schizophrenia and healthy controls. We installed 2 research-source smartphone apps, mindLAMP and Beiwe, to collect survey results, cognitive test results, and screen time metrics over a period of 3 months. Surveys were scheduled for twice a week, but participants were instructed to take the surveys naturally as much or as little as they wanted. Screen time was collected continuously in the background. A total of 140 participants was recruited from the outpatient clinic population as well as through general public advertising. Age-matched, smartphone-owning healthy controls were also part of the recruitment pool. A specification curve analysis was a priori designed to explore the relationship between every combination of independent variable and dependent variable in order to demonstrate to what degree screen time relates to symptoms in individuals with serious mental illness. ResultsThe sample consisted of 88 participants (54 with schizophrenia and 34 healthy controls) who completed both the initial and follow-up visits, completed at least one self-reported survey, and had a minimum passive data cutoff of 5 consecutive days. Abstract

BackgroundDespite the emergence of app evaluation tools, there remains no well-defined process receptive to diverse local needs, rigorous standards, and current content. The need for such a process to assist in the implementation of app evaluation across all medical fields is evident. Such a process has the potential to increase stakeholder engagement and catalyze interest and engagement with present-day app evaluation models. ObjectiveThis study aimed to develop and pilot test the Technology Evaluation and Assessment Criteria for Health apps (TEACH-apps). MethodsTailoring a well-known implementation framework, Replicating Effective Programs, we present a new process to approach the challenges faced in implementing app evaluation tools today. As a culmination of our experience implementing this process and feedback from stakeholders, we present the four-part process to aid the implementation of mobile health technology. This paper outlines the theory, evidence, and initial versions of the process. ResultsThe TEACH-apps process is designed to be broadly usable and widely applicable across all fields of health. The process comprises four parts: (1) preconditions (eg, gathering apps and considering local needs), (2) preimplementation (eg, customizing criteria and offering digital skills training), (3) implementation (eg, evaluating apps and creating educational handouts), and (4) maintenance and evolution (eg, repeating the process every 90 days and updating content). TEACH-apps has been tested internally at our hospital, and there is growing interest in partnering health care facilities to test the system at their sites. ConclusionsThis implementation framework introduces a process that equips stakeholders, clinicians, and users with the foundational tools to make informed decisions around app use and increase app evaluation engagement. The application of this process may lead to the selection of more culturally appropriate and clinically relevant tools in health care.

Abstract

A lo largo de los últimos años hemos visto cómo los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) han ido permeando las distintas capas de la sociedad, estableciendo nuevas prioridades tanto en las políticas públicas como en las empresariales. La educación no ha quedado ajena a este cambio, sino que también se está alineando con las metas anteriores. En este capítulo se describen las principales actividades realizadas en el marco del proyecto APS22.2003 “Aprendizaje BAsado en SErvicio DE ODS relacionados con una PROducción y consumo responsableS (A-BASE-DE-PROS)”, en el que el ODS 12 se toma como eje central para concienciar a estudiantes universitarios y de secundaria de la importancia de la Agenda 2030. En general, hemos comprobado que el proyecto ha permitido dar a conocer los ODS y que la mayoría de los estudiantes, tanto universitarios como de secundaria, han valorado la experiencia como positiva. .

Abstract

La Oficina de Aprendizaje-Servicio (ApS) de la UPM, constituida en sesión del Consejo de Gobierno de diciembre de 2019 tiene, como misión fundamental, promover en el ámbito de las enseñanzas de esta universidad la metodología ApS. Con esta finalidad se vienen realizando convocatorias de proyectos de impacto social alineados con los ODS como un mecanismo más para la contribución a la Agenda 2030, y se colabora intensamente con las diversas oficinas constituidas con el mismo objetivo en otras universidades. Nuestra oficina pretende impulsar progresivamente la colaboración con entidades ajenas a la UPM, y atender demandas y necesidades sociales en las que nuestros estudiantes y profesores brinden sus conocimientos para la construcción de una mejor y más justa sociedad. Con este propósito, se han puesto en marcha numerosas iniciativas y colaboraciones con Ayuntamientos, Asociaciones, ONG, Fundaciones y centros de enseñanza, con el fin común de plantear mejoras y trabajar con entornos desfavorecidos, y colectivos vulnerables de nuestro entorno. Cabe destacar la muy positiva acogida que, progresivamente se está logrando, en lo relativo a la diseminación de estas iniciativas en el ámbito de la UPM, viéndose incrementada la participación e interés de nuestros docentes y estudiantes en los llamamientos que se realizan desde la oficina. Desde la constitución de la oficina, son ya más de 100 actividades desarrolladas con la participación de más de 500 profesores. Uno de los compromisos de la Oficina ApS de la UPM es dar visibilidad por su carácter meritorio a las experiencias realizadas por el profesorado y los estudiantes de nuestra universidad y, es por ello, que nos complace la presentación de esta primera edición del ebook, en el que se recogen algunas de las experiencias realizadas en nuestra universidad y que confiamos ampliar periódicamente con futuras ediciones.
