Abstract

ObsMode is a yearly process which aims at preparing capabilities for future ALMA Observing cycles. The process has been running for a number of years tied to each ALMA observing cycle, with various leaderships. This document specifically summarizes the ObsMode2020 process (April- October 2020) with a new scheme led by the Joint ALMA Observatory. In the ObsMode2020 process, seven capabilities are identified as high priority items, for which it was originally aimed to be ready for Cycle 9. However, because of the observatory shutdown due to the covid-19 pandemic, we were forced to delay the test plan by one year. While no new data sets were obtained during the observatory shutdown, verifications using the existing data allowed us to offer the 7m-array polarization capability (in ACA standalone mode, single field) for Cycle 8 starting from October, 2021. In addition, subsystem readiness and policy-side preparations for the phased array observing mode were improved for Cycle 8. Abstract

The Atacama Large mm and sub-mm Array (ALMA) radio observatory is one of the world's largest astronomical projects. After the very successful conclusion of the first observation cycles Early Science Cycles 0 and 1, the ALMA project can report many successes and lessons learned. The science data taken interleaved with commissioning tests for the still continuing addition of new capabilities has already resulted in numerous publications in high-profile journals. The increasing data volume and complexity are challenging but under control. The radio-astronomical data analysis package "Common Astronomy Software Applications" (CASA) has played a crucial role in this effort. Abstract

Users of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) are provided with calibration and imaging products in addition to raw data. In Cycle 0 and Cycle 1, these products are produced by a team of data reduction experts spread across Chile, East Asia, Europe, and North America. This article discusses the lines of communication between the data reducers and ALMA users that enable this model of distributed data reduction. Abstract

The Millimeter Sky Transparency Imager (MiSTI) is a small millimeter-wave scanning telescope with a 25-cm diameter dish operating at 183 GHz. MiSTI is installed at Atacama, Chile, and it measures emission from atmospheric water vapor and its fluctuations to estimate atmospheric absorption in the millimeter to submillimeter. MiSTI observes the water vapor distribution at a spatial resolution of 0.5 deg, and it is sensitive enough to detect an excess path length of <~ 0.05 mm for an integration time of 1 s. By comparing the MiSTI measurements with those by a 220 GHz tipper, we validate that the 183 GHz measurements of MiSTI are correct, down to the level of any residual systematic errors in the 220 GHz measurements. Since 2008, MiSTI has provided real-time (every 1 hr) monitoring of the all-sky opacity distribution and atmospheric transmission curves in the (sub)millimeter through the internet, allowing to know the (sub)millimeter sky conditions at Atacama., Comment: 12 pages, 1 table, 10 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

5. Dense and Warm Molecular Gas and Warm Dust in Nearby Galaxies

Abstract

We performed 12CO(1-0), 13CO(1-0), and HCN(1-0) single-dish observations (beam size ~14"-18") toward nearby starburst and non-starburst galaxies using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. The 13CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0) emissions were detected from all the seven starburst galaxies, with the intensities of both lines being similar (i.e., the ratios are around unity). On the other hand, for case of the non-starburst galaxies, the 13CO(1-0) emission was detected from all three galaxies, while the HCN(1-0) emission was weakly or not detected in past observations. This result indicates that the HCN/13CO intensity ratios are significantly larger (~1.15+-0.32) in the starburst galaxy samples than the non-starburst galaxy samples (<0.31+-0.14). The large-velocity-gradient model suggests that the molecular gas in the starburst galaxies have warmer and denser conditions than that in the non-starburst galaxies, and the photon-dominated-region model suggests that the denser molecular gas is irradiated by stronger interstellar radiation field in the starburst galaxies than that in the non-starburst galaxies. In addition, HCN/13CO in our sample galaxies exhibit strong correlations with the IRAS 25 micron flux ratios. It is a well established fact that there exists a strong correlation between dense molecular gas and star formation activities, but our results suggest that molecular gas temperature is also an important parameter., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. 6. A Revised Estimate of the CO (J=1-0) Emission from the Host Galaxy of GRB 030329 Using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array

A sensitive observation of the CO (J=1-0) molecular line emission in the host galaxy of GRB 030329 (z =0.1685) has been performed using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array in order to detect molecular gas and hidden star formation. No sign of CO emission was detected, which invalidates our previous report on the presence of molecular gas. The 3sigma upperlimit on the CO line luminosity (L'_CO) of the host galaxy is 6.9 x 10^8 K km s^-1 pc^2. The lowerlimit of the host galaxy's metallicity is estimated to be 12+log(O/H) ~ 7.9, which yields a CO line luminosity to H_2 conversion factor of alpha_CO = 40 Msun (K km s^-1 pc^2)^-1. Assuming this alpha_CO factor, the 3sigma upperlimit on the molecular gas mass of the host galaxy is 2.8 x 10^10 Msun. Based on the Schmidt law, the 3sigma upperlimit of the total star formation rate (SFR) of the host galaxy is estimated to be 38 Msun yr^-1. These results independently confirm the inferences of previous observations in the optical, submillimeter, and X-ray band, which regard this host galaxy as a compact dwarf galaxy, and not a massive, aggressively star forming galaxy., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

7. Starburst at the Expanding Molecular Superbubble in M82: Self-Induced Starburst at the Inner Edge of the Superbubble

Abstract

We present high spatial resolution (2.3"x1.9" or 43 pc x 36 pc at D = 3.9 Mpc) 100 GHz millimeter-wave continuum emission observations with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array toward an expanding molecular superbubble in the central region of M82. The 100 GHz continuum image, which is dominated by free-free emission, revealed that the four strongest peaks are concentrated at the inner edge of the superbubble along the galactic disk. The production rates of Lyman continuum photons calculated from 100 GHz continuum flux at these peaks are an order of magnitude higher than those from the most massive star forming regions in our Galaxy. At these regions, high velocity ionized gas (traced by H41a and [Ne II]) can be seen, and H2O and OH masers are also concentrated. The center of the superbubble, on the other hand, is weak in molecular and free-free emissions and strong in diffuse hard X-ray emission. These observations suggest that a strong starburst produced energetic explosions and resultant plasma and superbubble expansions, and induced the present starburst regions traced by our 100 GHz continuum observations at the inner edge of the molecular superbubble. These results, therefore, provide the first clear evidence of self-induced starburst in external galaxies. Starburst at the center of the superbubble, on the other hand, begins to cease because of a lack of molecular gas. This kind of intense starburst seems to have occurred several times within 10^6-10^7 years in the central region of M82., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures. 8. NMA Survey of CO and HCN Emission from Nearby Active Galaxies

Abstract

High resolution (a few arcseconds) observations of CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0) emission from nearby Seyfert galaxies have been conducted with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. Based on the observed CO distributions and kinematics,we suggest that a small scale (a few 100 pc - a few kpc) distortion of the underlying potential seems to be necessary for Seyfert activity, although it is not a sufficient condition. We also find that the Toomre's Q values in the centers of Seyfert galaxies tend to be larger than unity, indicating the circumnuclear molecular gas disks around Seyfert nuclei would be gravitationally stable. The HCN/CO integrated intensity ratios (R_HCN/CO) range over an order of magnitude, from 0.086 to 0.6. The Seyfert galaxies with high R_HCN/CO may have an extended (r ~ 100 pc scale) envelope of obscuring material. 9. Dense Molecular Gas Associated with the Circumnuclear Star Forming Ring in the Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 6951

Abstract

We present high resolution (3" - 5") observations of CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0) emission from the circumnuclear star forming ring in the barred spiral galaxy NGC 6951, a host of a type-2 Seyfert, using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and 45 m telescope. We find that most of the HCN emission is associated with the circumnuclear ring, where vigorous star formation occurs. The HCN to CO integrated intensity ratio is also enhanced in the star forming ring; the peak value of HCN/CO ratio is 0.18, which is comparable to the ratio in the starbursts NGC 253 and M82. The formation mechanism of dense molecular gas has been investigated. We find that the shocks along the orbit crowding do not promote the formation of the dense molecular gas effectively but enhance the presence of low density GMCs. Instead, gravitational instabilities of the gas can account for the dense molecular gas formation. The HCN/CO ratio toward the Seyfert nucleus of NGC 6951 is a rather normal value (0.086), in contrast with other Seyferts NGC 1068 and M51 where extremely high HCN/CO value of ~ 0.5 have been reported., Comment: 33 pages, 17 figures, to appear in the Astrophysical Journal

These activities help to drive the cutting-edge science conducted with ALMA and to maintain ALMA’s position as the foremost interferometric array operating at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths. Abstract

A large sub-mm survey with Herschel will enable many exciting science opportunities, especially in an era of wide-field optical and radio surveys and high resolution cosmic microwave background experiments. The Herschel-SPIRE Legacy Survey (HSLS), will lead to imaging data over 4000 sq. degrees at 250, 350, and 500 micron. Major Goals of HSLS are: (a) produce a catalog of 2.5 to 3 million galaxies down to 26, 27 and 33 mJy (50% completeness; 5 sigma confusion noise) at 250, 350 and 500 micron, respectively, in the southern hemisphere (3000 sq. degrees) and in an equatorial strip (1000 sq. degrees), areas which have extensive multi-wavelength coverage and are easily accessible from ALMA. Two thirds of the of the sources are expected to be at z > 1, one third at z > 2 and about a 1000 at z > 5. (b) Remove point source confusion in secondary anisotropy studies with Planck and ground-based CMB data. (c) Find at least 1200 strongly lensed bright sub-mm sources leading to a 2% test of general relativity. Abstract

Aperture synthesis observations of CO(J=1-0) emission and near-infrared broad-band photometry of the non-barred Seyfert galaxy NGC 5033 (D = 18.7 Mpc) were performed. Our 3".9 x 3".6 resolution CO observations reveal a perturbed distribution and the kinematics of molecular gas in the center of NGC 5033; we find the characteristic gaseous features that are widely observed in barred spiral galaxies, such as two bright CO peaks near the center (separated by ~ 3'' or 270 pc from the nucleus), two offset ridges of CO emission emanating from the CO peaks, and a CO ring (with a radius of ~ 14'' or 1.3 kpc). Double-peaked velocity profiles are also evident near the two CO peaks, implying that these CO peaks are orbit crowding zones in a barred/oval potential. Although NIR data only give an upper limit of the possible bar lengths, due to a large inclination of the NGC 5033 disk (i = 68 deg), our CO data clearly suggests the presence of a small (the semi-major axis of about 12'' - 15'' or 1.1 - 1.4 kpc) nuclear bar (or oval structure) in the center of the ``non-barred'' galaxy NGC 5033. Our results demonstrate that high-resolution CO imaging-spectroscopy is useful to search for nuclear bars, even in highly inclined systems where isophoto fitting techniques are not applicable. We find that the gas mass-to-dynamical mass ratio, M_gas/M_dyn, is small (< 1%) within a radius of 2'' or 180 pc, in contrast to starburst nuclei. This implies that the starburst does not cohabitate in the type-1.5 Seyfert nucleus of N GC 5033., 23 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ. Abstract

A large sub-mm survey with Herschel will enable many exciting science opportunities, especially in an era of wide-field optical and radio surveys and high resolution cosmic microwave background experiments. The Herschel-SPIRE Legacy Survey (HSLS), will lead to imaging data over 4000 sq. degrees at 250, 350, and 500 micron. Major Goals of HSLS are: (a) produce a catalog of 2.5 to 3 million galaxies down to 26, 27 and 33 mJy (50% completeness; 5 sigma confusion noise) at 250, 350 and 500 micron, respectively, in the southern hemisphere (3000 sq. degrees) and in an equatorial strip (1000 sq. degrees), areas which have extensive multi-wavelength coverage and are easily accessible from ALMA. Two thirds of the of the sources are expected to be at z > 1, one third at z > 2 and about a 1000 at z > 5. (b) Remove point source confusion in secondary anisotropy studies with Planck and ground-based CMB data. (c) Find at least 1200 strongly lensed bright sub-mm sources leading to a 2% test of general relativity. (d) Identify 200 proto-cluster regions at z of 2 and perform an unbiased study of the environmental dependence of star formation. (e) Perform an unbiased survey for star formation and dust at high Galactic latitude and make a census of debris disks and dust around AGB stars and white dwarfs.

Abstract

A large sub-mm survey with Herschel will enable many exciting science opportunities, especially in an era of wide-field optical and radio surveys and high resolution cosmic microwave background experiments. The Herschel-SPIRE Legacy Survey (HSLS), will lead to imaging data over 4000 sq. degrees at 250, 350, and 500 micron. Major Goals of HSLS are: (a) produce a catalog of 2.5 to 3 million galaxies down to 26, 27 and 33 mJy (50% completeness; 5 sigma confusion noise) at 250, 350 and 500 micron, respectively, in the southern hemisphere (3000 sq. degrees) and in an equatorial strip (1000 sq. degrees), areas which have extensive multi-wavelength coverage and are easily accessible from ALMA. Two thirds of the of the sources are expected to be at z > 1, one third at z > 2 and about a 1000 at z > 5. (b) Remove point source confusion in secondary anisotropy studies with Planck and ground-based CMB data. (c) Find at least 1200 strongly lensed bright sub-mm sources leading to a 2% test of general relativity. (d) Identify 200 proto-cluster regions at z of 2 and perform an unbiased study of the environmental dependence of star formation. (e) Perform an unbiased survey for star formation and dust at high Galactic latitude and make a census of debris disks and dust around AGB stars and white dwarfs.
