We present the first census of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) complete down to 10$^6 M_{\odot}$ and within the inner 4 kpc of the nearest giant elliptical and powerful radio galaxy, Centaurus A. We identified 689 GMCs using CO(1--0) data with 1" spatial resolution ($\sim 20$ pc) and 2 km/s velocity resolution obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The $I$(CO)-$N$(H$_2$) conversion factor based on the virial method is $X_{\rm CO}$ = $(2 \pm 1 )\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$(K km/s)$^{-1}$ for the entire molecular disk, consistent with that of the disks of spiral galaxies including the Milky Way, and $X_{\rm CO}$ = $(5 \pm 2)\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$(K km/s)$^{-1}$ for the circumnuclear disk (CND, within a galactocentric radius of 200 pc). We obtained the GMC mass spectrum distribution and find that the best-truncated power-law fit for the whole molecular disk, with index $\gamma \simeq -2.41 \pm 0.02$ and upper cutoff mass $\sim 1.3 \times 10^{7} M_{\odot}$, is also in agreement with that of nearby disk galaxies. A trend is found in the mass spectrum index from steep to shallow as we move to inner radii. Although the GMCs are in an elliptical galaxy, the general GMC properties in the molecular disk are as in spiral galaxies. However, in the CND, large offsets in the line-width-size scaling relations ($\sim$ 0.3 dex higher than those in the GMCs in the molecular disk), a different $X_{\rm CO}$ factor, and the shallowest GMC mass distribution shape ($\gamma = -1.1 \pm 0.2$) all suggest that there the GMCs are most strongly affected by the presence of the AGN and/or shear motions., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present ALMA CO(1-0) observations toward the dust lane of the nearest elliptical and radio galaxy, NGC 5128 (Centaurus A), with high angular resolution ($\sim$ 1 arcsec, or 18 pc), including information from large to small spatial scales and total flux. We find a total molecular gas mass of 1.6$\times$10$^9$ $M_\odot$ and we reveal the presence of filamentary components more extended than previously seen, up to a radius of 4 kpc. We find that the global star formation rate is $\sim$1 \Msol yr$^{-1}$, which yields a star formation efficiency (SFE) of 0.6 Gyr$^{-1}$ (depletion time $\tau =$1.5 Gyr), similar to those in disk galaxies. We show the most detailed view to date (40\,pc resolution) of the relation between molecular gas and star formation within the stellar component of an elliptical galaxy, from several kpc scale to the circumnuclear region close to the powerful radio jet. Although on average the SFEs are similar to those of spiral galaxies, the circumnuclear disk (CND) presents SFEs of 0.3 Gyr$^{-1}$, lower by a factor of 4 than the outer disk. The low SFE in the CND is in contrast to the high SFEs found in the literature for the circumnuclear regions of some nearby disk galaxies with nuclear activity, probably as a result of larger shear motions and longer AGN feedback. The higher SFEs in the outer disk suggests that only central molecular gas or filaments with sufficient density and strong shear motions will remain in $\sim$1 Gyr, which will later result in the compact molecular distributions and low SFEs usually seen in other giant ellipticals with cold gas., Comment: Minor update. 20 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the results of CO interferometric observations of the southern elliptical galaxy NGC3557 with ALMA. We have detected both the CO(1-0) emission line and a relatively strong continuum at 3mm. The continuum shows a flat-spectrum central unresolved source (at our angular resolution of 0.7arcsec) and two jets, associated with the larger scale emission observed at lower frequencies. The molecular gas in NGC3557 appears to be concentrated within 250 pc of the center, and shows evidence of organized rotation along the same axis as the stellar component and the symmetry axis of the nuclear dust absorption reported in the literature. We obtained M$_{H_2}$=(9.0$\pm$2.0)x10$^7$ M$_\odot$ of molecular gas, which has an average CO(2-1) to CO(1-0) line ratio of 0.7, which is relatively high when compared with the values reported in the literature for bona-fide ellipticals observed with single-dish telescopes. NGC3557 shows further a high excitation peak (i.e., CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) ~ 1.1$\pm$0.3 offset 0.7 arcsec from the center, which appears to be associated with a region of higher velocity dispersion that does not share the overall rotation pattern of the molecular gas, but aligned with the radio jet. The molecular gas disk in this object appears to be stable to local gravitational instabilities.

We aim at analyzing the (sub-)millimeter emission in a nearby blazar, PKS 0521-365 , to study the synchrotron and thermal emission in the different components detected at low frequency. We analyze the archive public data of the ALMA Cycle 0 where PKS 0521-365 is used as a calibrator. A total of 13 projects with 23 dataset is analyzed in band 3, 6 and 7 and combined. The whole set of data is combined and wavelet filtered to obtain a deep image reaching a dynamic range of 47000. The individual emission flux is measured at different date over a period of 11 months in various components. Finally we analyze the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) in each different component, including the radio jet and counter jet. The point sources detected in the field follow a similar distribution to previous studies. The blazar flux shows large variation especially in band 3. Different components are observed: core, radio jet and newly detected counter jet, Hot Spot (HS) and a disky structure roughly perpendicular to the jet. The HS emission is formed by a point source surrounded by an extended emission. The viewing angle of the jet is about 30 with a Doppler factor of 1.6$. The HS is at a distance of 19 kpc from the center. The SED analysis shows a strong variation of the core spectral index, especially in band 3. The two components in the radio jet have roughly a flat spectral index in band 6 and 7. Using these ALMA data the different weak and extended components are detected. The analysis of both jets constrains the geometrical distance of the HS to the center. The SED presents a different shape in time and frequency for each component. Finally a new structure is detected roughly perpendicular to the radio jet and a thermal emission origin is currently favoured. We present results on low-resolution mid-infrared (MIR) spectra of 70 infrared-luminous galaxies obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard Spitzer. We selected sources from the European Large Area Infrared Survey (ELAIS) with S15 > 0.8 mJy and photometric or spectroscopic z > 1. About half of the sample are QSOs in the optical, while the remaining sources are galaxies, comprising both obscured AGN and starbursts. We classify the spectra using well-known infrared diagnostics, as well as a new one that we propose, into three types of source: those dominated by an unobscured AGN (QSOs), obscured AGN, and starburst-dominated sources. Starbursts concentrate at z ~ 0.6-1.0 favored by the shift of the 7.7-micron PAH band into the selection 15 micron band, while AGN spread over the 0.5 < z < 3.1 range. Star formation rates (SFR) are estimated for individual sources from the luminosity of the PAH features. An estimate of the average PAH luminosity in QSOs and obscured AGN is obtained from the composite spectrum of all sources with reliable redshifts. The estimated mean SFR in the QSOs is 50-100 Mo yr^-1, but the implied FIR luminosity is 3-10 times lower than that obtained from stacking analysis of the FIR photometry, suggesting destruction of the PAH carriers by energetic photons from the AGN. The SFR estimated in obscured AGN is 2-3 times higher than in QSOs of similar MIR luminosity. This discrepancy might not be due to luminosity effects or selection bias alone, but could instead indicate a connection between obscuration and star formation. However, the observed correlation between silicate absorption and the slope of the near- to mid-infrared spectrum is compatible with the obscuration of the AGN emission in these sources being produced in a dust torus., Comment: 32 pages, 24 figures, 15 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The data from a CO(1 - 0) mapping survey of 40 nearby spiral galaxies performed with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope are presented. The criteria of the sample selection were (1) RC3 morphological type in the range Sa to Scd, (2) distance less than 25 Mpc, (3) inclination angle less than 79deg (RC3), (4) flux at 100 um higher than ~ 10 Jy, (5) spiral structure is not destroyed by interaction. The maps of CO cover most of the optical disk of the galaxies. We investigated the influence of bar on the distribution of molecular gas in spiral galaxies using these data. We confirmed that the degree of central concentration is higher in barred spirals than in non-barred spirals as shown by the previous works. Furthermore, we present an observational evidence that bars are efficient in driving molecular gas that lies within the bar length toward the center, while the role in bringing gas in from the outer parts of the disks is small. The transported gas accounts for about half of molecular gas within the central region in barred spiral galaxies. We found a correlation between the degree of central concentration and bar strength. Galaxies with stronger bars tend to have higher central concentration. The correlation implies that stronger bars accumulate molecular gas toward the center more efficiently. We report results from a Spitzer GO-1 program of IRS spectroscopy of a large sample of Luminous Infrared Galaxies and quasars selected from the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) which have a wide multiwavelength coverage, including ISOCAM, ISOPHOT, IRAC and MIPS (from SWIRE), and optical photometry. Aperture synthesis observations of CO(J=1-0) emission and near-infrared broad-band photometry of the non-barred Seyfert galaxy NGC 5033 (D = 18.7 Mpc) were performed. Our 3".9 x 3".6 resolution CO observations reveal a perturbed distribution and the kinematics of molecular gas in the center of NGC 5033; we find the characteristic gaseous features that are widely observed in barred spiral galaxies, such as two bright CO peaks near the center (separated by ~ 3'' or 270 pc from the nucleus), two offset ridges of CO emission emanating from the CO peaks, and a CO ring (with a radius of ~ 14'' or 1.3 kpc). Double-peaked velocity profiles are also evident near the two CO peaks, implying that these CO peaks are orbit crowding zones in a barred/oval potential. Although NIR data only give an upper limit of the possible bar lengths, due to a large inclination of the NGC 5033 disk (i = 68 deg), our CO data clearly suggests the presence of a small (the semi-major axis of about 12'' - 15'' or 1.1 - 1.4 kpc) nuclear bar (or oval structure) in the center of the ``non-barred'' galaxy NGC 5033. Our results demonstrate that high-resolution CO imaging-spectroscopy is useful to search for nuclear bars, even in highly inclined systems where isophoto fitting techniques are not applicable. We find that the gas mass-to-dynamical mass ratio, M_gas/M_dyn, is small (< 1%) within a radius of 2'' or 180 pc, in contrast to starburst nuclei. This implies that the starburst does not cohabitate in the type-1.5 Seyfert nucleus of N GC 5033., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ. The central kpc region of the low luminosity type-1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1097 has been observed in the CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0) lines with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and the NRO 45 m telescope. We find a striking enhancement of the HCN emission toward the active nucleus of NGC 1097; a large fraction of the CO emission comes from the circumnuclear starburst ring (r = 10" or 700 pc at D = 14.5 Mpc), whereas the HCN emission is dominated by a strong unresolved peak at the nucleus. The HCN-to-CO integrated intensity ratio in brightness temperature scale is about 0.11 in the aperture of the 45 m telescope beams (r < 510 pc for CO and r < 640 pc for HCN), but it reaches 0.34 in the smaller aperture (within the central r < 350 x 150 pc region). These CO and HCN properties in NGC 1097 are similar to those in the type-2 Seyfert galaxies NGC 1068 and NGC 5194 (M 51)., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, PASJ in press

An imaging survey of CO(1-0), HCN(1-0), and HCO$^+$(1-0) lines in the centers of nearby Seyfert galaxies has been conducted using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and the RAINBOW interferometer. Preliminary results reveal that 3 Seyferts out of 7 show abnormally high HCN/CO and HCN/HCO$^+$ ratios, which cannot occur even in nuclear starburst galaxies. We suggest that the enhanced HCN emission originated from X-ray irradiated dense obscuring tori, and that these molecular line ratios can be a new diagnostic tool to search for ``pure'' AGNs. According to our HCN diagram, we suggest that NGC 1068, NGC 1097, and NGC 5194 host ``pure'' AGNs, whereas Seyfert nuclei of NGC 3079, NGC 6764, and NGC 7469 may be ``composite'' in nature., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, in ASP Conf. The Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA) has been used to make aperture synthesis CO(1-0) observations of the post-starburst galaxy NGC 5195. CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0) observations of NGC 5195 using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope are also presented. High-resolution (1".9 x 1".8 or 86 pc x 81 pc at D = 9.3 Mpc) NMA maps show a strong concentration of CO emission toward the central a few 100 pc region of NGC 5195, despite the fact that the current massive star formation is suppressed there. The HCN-to-CO integrated intensity ratio on the brightness temperature scale, R_{HCN/CO}, is about 0.02 within the central r < 400 pc region. This R_{HCN/CO} is smaller than those in starburst regions by a factor of 5 - 15. These molecular gas properties would explain why NGC 5195 is in a post-starburst phase; most of the dense molecular cores (i.e., the very sites of massive star formation) have been consumed away by a past starburst event, and therefore a burst of massive star formation can no longer last, although a large amount of low density gas still exists. We propose that dense molecular gas can not be formed from remaining diffuse molecular gas because the molecular gas in the center of NGC 5195 is too stable to form dense cores via gravitational instabilities of diffuse molecular gas., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures, PASJ, vol. 54, in press. We performed 12CO(1-0), 13CO(1-0), and HCN(1-0) interferometric observations of the central region (about 450 pc in radius) of M82 with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array, and have successfully imaged a molecular superbubble and spurs. The center of the superbubble is clearly shifted from the nucleus by 140 pc. This position is close to that of the massive black hole (BH) of >460 Mo and the 2.2 micron secondary peak (a luminous supergiant dominated cluster), which strongly suggests that these objects may be related to the formation of the superbubble. Consideration of star formation in the cluster based on the infrared data indicates that (1) energy release from supernovae can account for the kinetic energy of the superbubble, (2) the total mass of stellar-mass BHs available for building-up the massive BH may be much higher than 460 Mo, and (3) it is possible to form the middle-mass BH of 100-1000 Mo within the timescale of the superbubble. We present the results of the CO mapping observations of the barred spiral galaxy NGC3504 with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. The distribution of the molecular gas shows offset ridges which correspond to the distribution of HII regions along the bar. The velocity perpendicular to the bar decreases abruptly at the ridge. The velocity change implies that the molecular gas changes the direction of its motion to parallel to the bar at the ridge. Since the position angle of the major axis of the bar and the line of nodes are almost the same in NGC 3504, an upper limit to the pattern speed of the bar can be derived directly from the radial velocity. The resultant upper limit is 41 km/s/kpc which is much smaller than that derived with an assumption that the corotation radius is located at the end of the bar (77 km/s/kpc).
