While continuing researches on ancient cartography (Lukoševičius 2014) the publication is aimed at viewing maps of Samogitia in the perspective of historical events, with a special emphasis on most important historical events as well as cartography development moments. The method used is analysis the most representitive examples of maps, by different authors, found in cartographical archives. The article presents the authors and designers over 60 maps where Samogitia is marked and discusses map characteristics. It also provides links that are helpful for the readers interested in a more detailed studies of specific maps. Such presentation should help revise and complete the historical image of Samogitia because the old maps were not specific to any one topic. They– the universal, they were reflected in both the natural and social phenomena and the evolution of patterns. It was also available and various historical comments. Often, the old maps are often associated with military needs. Summarizing research results the author conclude that presented ancient maps is important for the history of Lithuania cartography and are true historical witnesses helping to understand long and complicated formation process of Samogitia and the state of Lithuania; however the analysis alone is insufficient to fully reveal its historic concept.

When mapping the area of Lithuania, place-names presented by linguists or given in documents are used. The spelling differences of these names in different sources and over-generalised locations cause the importance of localisation specification and choice of spelling for cartographers. A signal map prepared by cartographers must be reviewed by a specialist of Lithuanian language. Bet we cannot avoid mistakes in maps because of the linguists incompetence to perform the localisation of small hydronyms. This paper includes a specific material about place-names in different sources. Article in Lithuanian Šiuolaikinės Lietuvos kartografijos problemos dėl oikonimų ir hidronimų neatitikimų norminamuosiuose ir oficialiuose leidiniuose Santrauka. Kartografuojant Lietuvos teritoriją vietovardžiai privalo būti sunorminti kalbininkų ir teikiami oficialiuose dokumentuose ar leidiniuose. Dėl vietovardžių rašybos neatitikimų skirtinguose šaltiniuose ir pernelyg generalizuotos jų lokalizacijos kartografams kyla vietovardžių lokalizavimo tikslinimo ir rašybos varianto parinkimo reikmė. Kartografų parengtas signalinis žemėlapio variantas prieš tiražuojant teikiamas lietuvių kalbos specialistams vietovardžių ekspertizei atlikti. Tačiau kalbininkams neišgalint smulkesnius hidronimus lokalizuoti konkrečiai netikslumų žemėlapiuose išvengti nepavyksta. Straipsnyje aptariamos oikonimų ir hidronimų vartosenos problemos, iškylančios rengiant oficialius kartografinius leidinius. The article gives a scientific overview of the graphical documents of the Vilkmerges pavietas (administrative territorial unit) landed estates in the first half of the 19th century of Lithuania. Specifically it analyses plans of possessions of Pakruojis and Seduva landed estates in Upytes pavietas and plans of possessions of landed estates in Rokiskis county. The article analyses the principle of making the plans and their authorship, orientation, scale, conventional signs, environs, technique they are carried out, and elements of their decoration. It also analyses names of settlements, rivers, woods, bogs and peat bogs that are marked on the maps comparing them with their present-day standardised names. The article concludes that toponyms and hydronyms have essentially preserved the elements of identity. More visible changes are observed in the names of lakes. Article in Lithuanian XIX a. Nagrinėjami planų sudarymo principai, aptariama autorystė, jų kryptingumas, masteliai, sutartiniai ženklai, apimamos teritorijos, gamybos technika, puošybos elementai. Analizuojami planuose pateiktų gyvenviečių, upių, ežerų, miškų, pelkių ir durpynų pavadinimai ir lyginami su nūdienos sunormintais jų pavadinimais. Konstatuojama, kad vietovardžiai ir vandenvardžiai iš esmės išlikę tapatūs. Labiau pakitę kai kurių ežerų vardai. A number of publications about Lithuanian interwar topographical mapping present the same piece of information that until the beginning of the World War II only the following maps were published: 92 M 1:25 000 and 44 M 1:100 000. The article analyses the interwar (1920–1940) topographical maps of several areas of Lithuania which were compiled but never published: Varėna artillery ground map M 1:25 000 (1925), Gaižiūnai military ground maps M 1:100 000 (1930 ?) and 1:50 000 (1932), Kaunas garrison shooting-theatre map M :10 000 (1933), Pabradė military garrison map M 1:25 000 (1940), Šventoji-Darbėnai map M 1:100 000 (1939?). The first Lithuanian topographical maps for the whole territory of the country were published before the World War II. During the Soviet regime changes in Lithuanian hydrography due to changes in land reclamation activities and needs of hydroenergetics resulted in considerable changes of the landscape. The article analyses essential changes of lakes and their names compared to the secondary topographical cartography of the territory of Lithuania that started after regaining the political independence. The article discusses problems of standartisation of lake names and presents the table of essential changes of lake names as a result of two rounds of cartography. Pirmieji lietuviški Lietuvos teritorijos topografiniai žemėlapiai buvo išleisti iki Antrojo pasaulinio karo. Cartography can be traced back to drawings of an area. Pictorial maps and map drawing do not lose their artistic appeal despite the standards of the present day cartography. The article analyses images and reflections of historic epochs and events in maps. It presents examples of printed maps by famous West European cartographers and publishers covering the period from the antiquity to MiddleAges, to Renaissance and more recent times. Most of the presented printed maps include the territory of Lithuania or represent works by Lithuanian authors. The authors describe the map of Central Europe (Sarmatia Europae) made by C. In 2003, the institution set by Ministry of Environment of Lithuania has prepared a classification of lakes with 0,5 and less hectare area. In 1998–2001, Institute of Aerogeodesy published the official topographic maps of Lithuania Republic (scale 1:50 000). In these maps the cartograms of the lakes of the same area were made. This paper analyses the differences in the localisation and names of lakes in these two issues. Also, there are analysed the index of lake names made by linguists and the documents of cadastre of lakes published earlier. Hydronyms in cartographic materials and other informational sources of Lithuania should be presented in a normative way. The inadequacy of localisation of lakes and their names in official issues misleads the society and causes difficulties in identification and localisation of hydronyms. The authors stress a necessity to correct the existing situation and do not reiterate mistakes in the future numerical database of names of Lithuania localities. Analizuojami kalbininku leidiniai, kuriais remtasi įvardijant ežerus, ankstesnių metų ežerų kadastriniai dokumentai. Lietuvos kartografinėje medžiagoje ir kituose informaciniuose šaltiniuose vandenvardžiai turėtų būti teikiami vienodi ir tik norminiai. Straipsnyje nurodyti ir oficialiuose leidiniuose aptinkami ežerų vietos bei vardų neatitikimai klaidina vartotojus, kelia sunkumų nustatant objektų tapatybe ar esant būtinumui rasti juos vietovėje. The article aims at finding arguments to ground the hypothesis that Lithuania as a geographical territory was in existence for a few thousand years instead of a thousand. The method used is the analysis of different maps drawn by different authors and found in cartographical archives. In earlier times, Lithuania was called European Sarmatia. The article presents the authors and designers of the maps where Sarmatia is marked as well as their characteristics, including issue dates, the names of territorial unites and their possible to identify administrative centres, geographical objects, tribal settlements, their neighbours, etc. When summarizing research results, the authors conclude that the ancient maps showing European Sarmatia are true historical witnesses helping to understand a long and complicated formation process of the state of Lithuania; however, only analysis is insufficient to fully reveal its prehistoric concept. Straipsnio tikslas – analizuojant kartografiniuose fonduose esančius senųjų autorių žemėlapius ir jų aprašymus ieškoti argumentų, kuriais galima būtų pagrįsti hipotezę, kad Lietuva kaip geografinė teritorija egzistavo ne prieš vieną, o prieš kelis tūkstančius metų. Tiesiog ji tuo metu buvo žymima kaip Europinė Sarmatija. Straipsnyje pristatomi žemėlapių, kuriuose atvaizduota Sarmatija, kūrėjai ir sudarytojai, pateikiamos žemėlapių charakteristikos: leidimo metai, atvaizduoti teritoriniai vienetai, geografiniai objektai, genčių bendruomenių apgyventos vietovės, kaimynai ir kt. Apibendrindami tyrimo rezultatus autoriai daro išvadą, kad senoviniai žemėlapiai, kuriuose žymima Europinė Sarmatija, yra puikūs istorijos liudytojai, padedantys suvokti ilgą ir sudėtingą Lietuvos valstybės formavimosi procesą, tačiau, siekiant atskleisti naują mūsų priešistorės koncepciją, vien tik jų analizės neužtenka. Cartographic products which characterise the relief of Lithuania and have been created during the last century and nowadays are described in this article. The article presents interpretations of the relief of Lithuania by specialists such as foresters, road engineers, geographers, topographers, hydrographers, land owners and geoinformatics. It also analyses the development of the relief of Lithuania via presentation of its qualitative and technological characteristics. After a lengthy period of search, with the help of Dr. N. Lietuvninkaite, M1:252 000 Suvalkijos map, published by B. K. Balutis in 1915 in the USA was located in the archives of KTU Rare Books Department, Cartography division. However, no facts were found regarding its design in B. K. Balutis fund in the Lithuanian Emigration Institute. The search itself looked hopeless because of wrong information in Lithuanian Encyclopaedia describing the period between two World Wars. It was stated there that because of World War 1 the map was never published. Thus, this is the first publication including its description. Also, illustrations for the article present the fragments of the Povilas Matulionis map ‘‘Mountainousness and Inclination Map of Lithuania and Outskirts“, 1924 and of the map of Suvalkija province, 1905. Balučio fonde žemėlapio sudarymo medžiagos nerasta. Paieška atrodė beviltiška dėl tarpukario Lietuviškosios enciklopedijos klaidinančios informacijos, kad prasidėjus Pirmajam pasauliniam karui žemėlapis nebuvo išleistas, tad aprašomas ir publikuojamas pirmą kartą. Eratosthenes (circa 276 B.C.–194 B.C.) is considered a famous scientist of ancient Greece. He was a mathematician and geographer. Born in Cyrene, now Shahhat (Libya), he was appointed to teach the son of the Egyptian King Ptolemy III Euergetes. In 240 B.C., he became the third chief librarian the Great Library of Alexandria. Eratosthenes laid basics for mathematical geography. He was the first to calculate precisely in an original way the Earth meridian's length between Syene and Alexandria. For this purpose he used perpendicular projection of the sun rays during summer solstice (06.22) near the town Syene, now Aswan. His estimation of the length of the Earth's radius (6300 km) is close to present estimation (6371 km). He calculated that a year possesses 365.25 days. He also emphasized the significance of maps as the most important thing in geography. Eratosthenes was the first one to use the term “geographem” to describe the Earth. In this way he legitimized the term of geography. He also put into system geographical information from various sources in order to obtain a map of the world as precise as possible.

This paper researches the representation of Lithuanian railways as a geographical object on old maps. It highlights the most significant stages of development of wide and narrow gauge railways and that of cartography in the background of historical events. The paper presents maps of Lithuanian railways collected from different sources and discusses map characteristics. It also provides links that are helpful to readers interested in more detailed studies of specific maps. The author summarises the research results by making a conclusion that old maps are an excellent source for historic studies of the development of Lithuanian state transport system and its impact on local and foreign economy. The author expects that the material presented in the paper will acquaint its readers with Lithuanian railway maps and become an object of research for those who are interested in the past of the nation and the state. The author stresses the ultimate necessity to reconstruct the map depicting the old internal network of Lithuanian railways in order to conserve these historic documents that are important to the Lithuanian state. This would allow a wider public access to them versus a small group of researchers of history archives. Santrauka Tęsiant senosios kartografijos tyrinėjimus (Girkus, Lukoševičius 2011) norima pažvelgti į vieno iš geografinių objektų – Lietuvos geležinkelių vaizdavimą žemėlapiuose istorinių įvykių perspektyvoje, išskirti reikšmingiausius plačiųjų ir siaurųjų geležinkelių raidos etapus ir kartografijos plėtotės momentus. Pristatomi iš įvairių šaltinių surinkti Lietuvos geležinkelių žemėlapiai ir jų charakteristikos. Pateikiamos nuorodos norimam žemėlapiui rasti išsamesnėms studijoms. Apibendrinant tyrimo rezultatus daroma išvada, kad senoviniai žemėlapiai yra puikūs istorijos liudytojai, padedantys suvokti turtingą ir įdomų Lietuvos valstybės transporto sistemos formavimosi procesą ir reikšmę vidaus bei tarptautinei ekonomikai. Pateikiama medžiaga – įdomi bei naudinga pažintis su praeitį liudijančiais Lietuvos geležinkelių žemėlapiais ir kartu tyrimo objektas kiekvienam, besidominčiam savo tautos ir valstybės praeitimi. This publication looks at ongoing legacy mapping studies at one of the geographical sites of Lithuanian water and road maps considering the historical portrayal of events in perspective and highlighting the most significant developments at several stages and cartographic development times. This article presents the old maps displaying water and land roads in Lithuania. The paper puts forward the authors and designers of the maps having marked roads and their characteristics, including issue dates, scale, the names of territorial unites and geographical objects etc. The article provides extensive data on the evolution of the development of Lithuanian roads. When summarizing research results of the study, the authors conclude that the roads marked in the ancient maps are excellent historical witnesses helping with a better understanding of a long and complicated process of forming the Lithuanian state. The authors stress the need to restore the old Lithuanian inland road maps so that historically important documents of state development should not be buried in archives but become available not only to historical researchers but also to the general public. Приведены старинные карты разных времен с отображением на них древних литовских дорог и представлены их характеристики: составители и годы издания карт, локализация географических объектов, размещение древних дорог и др. Приведены обширные данные об эволюции развития литовских дорог. Подводя итог результатам исследования, авторы приходят к выводу, что старинные карты древних дорог являются прекрасными историческими свидетельствами, способствующими лучшему пониманию сложного и длительного процесса формирования Литовского государства. Авторы подчеркивают необходимость воссоздания карты литовских исторических внутренних дорог с тем, чтобы важные исторические свидетельства цивилизации государства не были похоронены в архивах, a стали доступными для широкой общественности.
