2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) microfibres with diameters ranging between 3 and 7 µm were prepared by aqueous solution based high-speed electrospinning (HSES) technique and then used as carbonising agent at 3 wt% loading besides 15 wt% ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to obtain flame-retarded poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites. The high specific surface area of the microfibrous HP-β-CD was found to have a crucial role in its flame retardant efficiency. Compared to the effect of the same amount of conventional HP-β-CD powder additive, microfibrous HP-β-CD resulted in higher char yields both during thermogravimetric analysis and cone calorimeter test accompanied with significantly increased mechanical resistance and consequently with improved flame retarding efficacy. The Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) of the intumescent flame-retarded PLA composite increased noticeably, from 29.0% to 32.5%, while the Flame Retardancy Index (FRI), determined from cone calorimetry data, increased from 1.9 (with powder HP-β-CD) to 2.6 (with microfibrous HP-β-CD) only by changing the physical form i.e. the specific surface area of the used HP-β-CD. The advantage of the special microfibrous structure of the oligosaccharide type charring agent lies in the efficient interaction with APP and the attribution of the intumescent char layer with improved thermal and mechanical resistance without compromising its swelling ability. Besides, the microfibrous structure of the HP-β-CD also contributed to the improvement of the mechanical performance of the flame retarded PLA composites.

Introduction: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation is a therapeutic alternative for contraindicated and high surgical risk patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis. This intervention is part of daily routine in the Institute of the authors. Aim: In the present work the results of the first 200 patients are discussed. Method: Until January, 2016, 200 patients (female 55%, mean age 79.9 years, average EuroSCORE 19.3%, left ventricular ejection fraction 54%, peak gradient 81.2 mmHg, mean aortic gradient 50.9 mmHg) underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation. Results: The procedure was performed with 99% success rate. Complications were evaluated according to VARC 2 definitions. Mortality was 5% at one month and 17.4% at one year. Cardiac mortality was 13.6 at one year. Cerebrovascular complications were 5% within one year, and 95% of patients were in NYHA I or II functional classes at one year. Conclusion: These findings are consistent with worldwide results. Orv. Hetil., 2016, 157(45), 1786–1792.

Serum amyloid P component (SAP)-induced neuronal apoptosis has been demonstrated on the primary culture of embryonic rat cerebral cortex in vitro. Here we present pieces of evidence that cell death is also induced by serum amyloid P component in living rat brain similarly to that in cell culture. Intrahippocampally administered SAP diffuses from the site of injection to the cortical and subcortical area of the rat brain and enters the cells of brain tissue in 1 week. It induces elevation of the number of in situ TdT-mediated dUTP-X nick end-labeled nuclei in the hippocampus, cortex and subcortical structures of rat central nervous system. DNA fragmentation, which is detected by the end labeling reaction, is characteristic to apoptosis. It develops in 4 weeks following exposure. Apoptosis is an important form of cell death in different neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease. Our present work reveals that apoptosis can be induced by SAP beyond other hitherto known apoptosis inducing components of neurodegeneration. Hereby SAP seems to be an important component of the process, which leads to expanded neuronal loss in the pathomechanism of neurodegenerative diseases.

To specify targets for an ischemic preconditioning paradigm (ischemic tolerance), c-fos expressions in ischemic (induced by 10 min bilateral carotid-occlusions subsequent to coagulation of vertebral arteries) and preconditioned rats (treated for 4 min carotid-occlusions 72 h before ischemia) were compared in 12 forebrain areas/nuclei. Fos immunostaining was applied to serial sections of the forebrain and the density (cell number/area measured) of Fos-immunopositive (Fos+) neurons, as well as their percentile changes were determined in five hippocampal and seven extrahippocampal areas/nuclei of ischemic and preconditioned rats. The ratio of counts found in ischemic over control animals showed several fold increase of Fos+ cells in the three layers (granule cell, molecular and polymorphic) of the dentate gyrus, CA3 and CA1 pyramidal neurons, as well as in thalamic and hypothalamic nuclei and limbic cortical areas. In contrast, preconditioning did not alter c-fos expressions significantly in the extrahippocampal brain areas investigated. These results strengthen the hypothesis that the hippocampal and dentate neurons are more susceptible to ischemic tolerance than cells in other brain regions. In fact stress-response and induction of ischemic tolerance in different forebrain areas can be distinguished.
