Abstract

We show, that the former is suited for pp and low multiplicity PbPb collisions, whereas the latter might be applicable for high multiplicity PbPb collisions of dN/dy>3000. The High Level Trigger (HLT) of the ALICE experiment requires massive parallel computing. One of the main tasks of the HLT system is two-dimensional cluster finding on raw data of the Time Projection Chamber (TPC), which is the main data source of ALICE. To reduce the number of computing nodes needed in the HLT farm, FPGAs, which are an intrinsic part of the system, will be utilized for this task. Abstract

The ALICE High Level Trigger combines and processes the full information from all major detectors in a large computer cluster. Data rate reduction is achieved by reducing the event rate by selecting interesting events (software trigger) and by reducing the event size by selecting sub-events and by advanced data compression. Reconstruction chains for the barrel detectors and the forward muon spectrometer have been benchmarked. The HLT receives a replica of the raw data via the standard ALICE DDL link into a custom PCI receiver card (HLT-RORC). These boards also provide a FPGA co-processor for data-intensive tasks of pattern recognition. Some of the pattern recognition algorithms (cluster finder, Hough transformation) have been re-designed in VHDL to be executed in the Virtex-4 FPGA on the HLT-RORC. HLT prototypes were operated during the beam tests of the TPC and TRD detectors. The input and output interfaces to DAQ and the data flow inside of HLT were successfully tested. A full-scale prototype of the dimuon-HLT achieved the expected data flow performance. This system was finally embedded in a GRID-like system of several distributed clusters demonstrating the scalability and fault-tolerance of the HLT. 23. Improving the Energy Performance Certificate recommendations accuracy for residential building through simple measurements of key inputs

Abstract

The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) allows building users to be informed and aware of the quality of the buildings in terms of energy needs. Additionally, the EPC includes a future for existing buildings, which is the incorporation of a Recommendation list of Measures (RLMs) to improve their energy performance in a cost-effective way. This has risen the question if this tool can provide trustful cost-effective recommendations due despite the use of standardized inputs. This study focuses on estimating the impact of using measured ventilation rate, heating set point and airtightness on the profitability of the recommendations. The study is based on a common dwelling in Norway, comparing results obtained with a Building Performance Simulation Software, following the Norwegian standard for energy certification and with the use of measured ventilation rate, airtightness and real heating set points. The results show that the performance gap can be reduced significantly just by adopting these inputs, increasing the confidence on the RLMs and reducing the uncertainty of the investment.

Abstract

Studies were conducted on a group of 31 wood cutters in Norway, in October and November, 1989, to determine the correlation between age factor and physical output and exertion. Maximum oxygen intake, heart rate, and blood pressure recordings were measured under varying work loads. Results showed that work output is not affected by age, and work intensity corresponds to aerobic work capacity.

Abstract

Background Maternal smoking during pregnancy is linked to reduced birth weight but the gestation at onset of this relationship is not certain. We present a systematic review of the literature describing associations between maternal smoking during pregnancy and ultrasound measurements of fetal size, together with an accompanying meta-analysis. Methods Studies were selected from electronic databases (OVID, EMBASE and Google Scholar) that examined associations between maternal smoking or smoke exposure and antenatal fetal ultrasound measurements. Outcome measures were first, second or third trimester fetal measurements. Results There were 284 abstracts identified, 16 papers were included in the review and the metaanalysis included data from eight populations. Maternal smoking was associated with reduced second trimester head size (mean reduction 0.09 standard deviation (SD) [95% CI 0.01, 0.16]) and femur length (0.06 [0.01, 0.10]) and reduced third trimester head size (0.18 SD [0.13, 0.23]), femur length (0.27 SD [0.21, 0.32]) and estimated fetal weight (0.18 SD [0.11, 0.24]). Higher maternal cigarette consumption was associated with a lower z score for head size in the second (mean difference 0.09 SD [0, 0.19]) and third (0.15 SD [0.03, 0.26]) trimesters compared to lower consumption. Fetal measurements were not reduced for those whose mothers quit before or after becoming pregnant compared to mothers who had never smoked. Conclusions Maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with reduced fetal measurements after the first trimester, particularly reduced head size and femur length. These effects may be attenuated if mothers quit or reduce cigarette consumption during pregnancy.

Abstract

The NA57 experiment at the CERN SPS has measured strange baryon and antibaryon production in Pb Pb collisions with 158 and 40 A GeV/ c beam momenta. Recent results on Λ, Ξ and Ω hyperon enhancements and from the transverse mass spectra analysis for the 158 A GeV/ c data sample are presented. The energy dependence of hyperon production at mid-rapidity is discussed.

Abstract

We present central-to-peripheral nuclear modification factors, R-CP, for the (PT) distributions of K-S(0), Lambda, Lambda, and negatively charged particles, measured at central rapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at top SPS energy. The data cover the 55% most central fraction of the inelastic cross section. The K-S(0) and Lambda R-CP((PT)) are similar in shape to those measured at root sNN = 200 GeV at RHIC, though they are larger in absolute value. We have compared our K-S(0) R-CP data to a theoretical calculation. The prediction overestimates the data at (PT) approximate to 3-4 GeV/c, unless sizeable parton energy loss is included in the calculation. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Results are presented on the production of K0S, hyperons and antihyperons in Pb-Pb and p-Be interactions at 40 GeV/c per nucleon. The enhancement pattern follows the same hierarchy as seen in the higher energy data - the enhancement increases with the strangeness content of the hyperons and with the centrality of collision. The centrality dependence of the Pb-Pb yields and enhancements is steeper at 40 than at 158 A GeV/c. The energy dependence of strangeness enhancements at mid-rapidity is discussed. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.
