Abstract

The diffuse high-latitude H-alpha background is widely believed to be predominantly the result of in-situ recombination of ionized hydrogen in the warm interstellar medium of the Galaxy. Instead, we show that both a substantial fraction of the diffuse high-latitude H-alpha intensity in regions dominated by Galactic cirrus dust and much of the variance in the high-latitude H-alpha background are the result of scattering by interstellar dust of H-alpha photons originating elsewhere in the Galaxy. We provide an empirical relation, which relates the expected scattered H-alpha intensity to the IRAS 100um diffuse background intensity, applicable to about 81% of the entire sky. The assumption commonly made in reductions of CMB observations, namely that the observed all-sky map of diffuse H-alpha light is a suitable template for Galactic free-free foreground emission, is found to be in need of reexamination., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

(abridged) We study photoelectric heating throughout the Large Magellanic Cloud. We quantify the importance of the [CII] cooling line and the photoelectric heating process of various environments in the LMC and investigate which parameters control the extent of photoelectric heating. We use the BICE [CII] map and the Spitzer/SAGE infrared maps. We examine the spatial variations in the efficiency of photoelectric heating: photoelectric heating rate over power absorbed by grains. We correlate the photoelectric heating efficiency and the emission from various dust constituents and study the variations as a function of H\alpha emission, dust temperatures, and the total infrared luminosity. From this we estimate radiation field, gas temperature, and electron density. We find systematic variations in photoelectric efficiency. The highest efficiencies are found in the diffuse medium, while the lowest coincide with bright star-forming regions (~1.4 times lower). The [CII] line emission constitutes 1.32% of the far infrared luminosity across the whole of the LMC. We find correlations between the [CII] emission and ratios of the mid infrared and far infrared bands, which comprise various dust constituents. The correlations are interpreted in light of the spatial variations of the dust abundance and by the local environmental conditions that affect the dust emission properties. As a function of the total infrared surface brightness, S_{TIR}, the [CII] surface brightness can be described as: S_{[CII]}=1.25 S_{TIR}^{0.69} [10^{-3} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} sr^{-1}]. The [CII] emission is well-correlation with the 8 micrometer emission, suggesting that the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons play a dominant role in the photoelectric heating process., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 16 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

Nearby interstellar clouds at high Galactic latitudes are ideal objects in which the interaction of interstellar dust with photons from the well-characterized interstellar radiation field can be studied. Scattering and UV-excited photoluminescence at optical wavelengths as well as thermal emission at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths are observable manifestations of such interactions. Here we report initial results from an optical imaging survey of optically thin high-Galactic-latitude clouds, which is designed to study the surface brightness, structure, and spectral energy distribution of these objects. The primary aim of this paper is to study the extended red emission (ERE) that has been reported at high Galactic latitudes in earlier investigations and which is attributed to ultraviolet-excited photoluminescence of an as yet unidentified component of interstellar dust. We find strong evidence for dust emission in the form of a broad (>1000 A FWHM) ERE band with peak emission near 600 nm wavelength and peak intensity of ~ 5x10^-9 (erg cm^-2 s^-1 A^-1 sr^-1) in optically-thin clouds. This amounts to about 30% of the total optical surface brightness of these clouds, the remainder being consistent with expectations for dust-scattered light. This supports claims for the ubiquitous presence of the ERE carrier throughout the diffuse interstellar medium of the Milky Way Galaxy. We suggest that the ERE carrier is involved in the radiative processing of about 20% to 30% of the dust-absorbed UV/optical luminosity of the Milky Way galaxy, with the bulk of this energy being emitted in the near- to mid-infrared spectral regions., Comment: Accepted for Publication in the ApJ

We present IRAC and MIPS images and photometry of a sample of previously known planetary nebulae (PNe) from the SAGE survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) performed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Of the 233 known PNe in the survey field, 185 objects were detected in at least two of the IRAC bands, and 161 detected in the MIPS 24 micron images. Color-color and color-magnitude diagrams are presented using several combinations of IRAC, MIPS, and 2MASS magnitudes. The location of an individual PN in the color-color diagrams is seen to depend on the relative contributions of the spectral components which include molecular hydrogen, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), infrared forbidden line emission from the ionized gas, warm dust continuum, and emission directly from the central star. The sample of LMC PNe is compared to a number of Galactic PNe and found to not significantly differ in their position in color-color space. We also explore the potential value of IR PNe luminosity functions (LFs) in the LMC. IRAC LFs appear to follow the same functional form as the well-established [O III] LFs although there are several PNe with observed IR magnitudes brighter than the cut-offs in these LFs., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, to be published in the Astronomical Journal. Abstract

Color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) are presented for the Spitzer SAGE (Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution) survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). IRAC and MIPS 24 um epoch one data are presented. These data represent the deepest, widest mid-infrared CMDs of their kind ever produced in the LMC. Combined with the 2MASS survey, the diagrams are used to delineate the evolved stellar populations in the Large Magellanic Cloud as well as Galactic foreground and extragalactic background populations. Some 32000 evolved stars brighter than the tip of the red giant branch are identified. Of these, approximately 17500 are classified as oxygen-rich, 7000 carbon-rich, and another 1200 as ``extreme'' asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Brighter members of the latter group have been called ``obscured'' AGB stars in the literature owing to their dusty circumstellar envelopes. A large number (1200) of luminous oxygen--rich AGB stars/M supergiants are also identified. Finally, there is strong evidence from the 24 um MIPS channel that previously unexplored, lower luminosity oxygen-rich AGB stars contribute significantly to the mass loss budget of the LMC (1200 such sources are identified)., Comment: LaTex, 31 pages, 10 figures. The [C II] emission is well-correlated with the 8 µm emission, suggesting that the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons play a dominant role in the photoelectric heating process.

Abstract

The Spitzer Space Telescope Legacy program Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution (SAGE; PI: M. Meixner) has observed over 6 million stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud with both the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) and Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) instruments to explore the life-cycle of matter in a galaxy. Over 17000 of these stars were found to be candidate Oxygen-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch (O-rich AGB) stars. We combine photometry from Spitzer and elsewhere in constructing Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) for the SAGE candidate O-rich AGB stars. These SEDs are then modeled using the radiative transfer program 2Dust, with the goal of determining the O-rich AGB star candidates' mass-loss rates. Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) spectra are available as part of the Spitzer Legacy program SAGE-Spectroscopy (PI: F. Kemper) for a number of SAGE O-rich AGB star candidates; for two of these, IRS spectra in addition to the photometry are modeled with 2Dust to determine reasonable dust grain parameters to use for the candidate O-rich AGB stars in the rest of the SAGE sample. Using these dust grain properties, a grid of radiative transfer models was computed using 2Dust, varying stellar effective temperature and luminosity, dust shell inner radius, and dust shell optical depth at 10 microns wavelength. Synthetic photometry from models and observed photometry are plotted on color-color and color-magnitude diagrams, and model SEDs are directly compared to observed SEDs. The mass-loss rates from all O-rich AGB stars, especially those with the highest mass-loss rates, in the LMC are estimated and compared to its mass budget. Dust composition is also discussed in light of the results of the model grids.

Abstract

We are performing a uniform and unbiased imaging survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using the IRAC and MIPS instruments on board the Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer). Meixner et al. (2006) provides an overview of the project and initial results and their Table 1 (repeated here) outlines the survey's salient characteristics. In this project, we are surveying the agents of a galaxys evolution (SAGE), i.e. the interstellar medium (ISM) and stars, and their interaction on the galaxy wide scale of the LMC. Spitzer IRAC and MIPS images provide key insights into the life cycle of matter in a galaxy because the infrared emission from dust grains is an effective tracer of the ISM, star formation, and stellar mass-loss. Three key science goals determined the coverage and depth of the survey. The detection of diffuse ISM with column densities > 1.2×1021 H cm−2 permits detailed studies of dust processes in the ISM. SAGE's point source sensitivity enables a complete census of newly formed stars with masses >3 M⊙ that will determine the current star formation rate in the LMC. SAGE's detection of evolved stars with mass loss rates > 10−8 M⊙ yr−1 will quantify the rate at which evolved stars inject mass into the ISM of the LMC (Blum et al. 2006). The SAGE data are nonproprietary. The preliminary SAGE catalog of epoch 1 photometry, prepared by the SAGE Team and released to the public on January 3, 2006, contains over 4 million IRAC sources, band merged with 2MASS photometry and over 60,000 MIPS 24 micron sources. Preliminary estimates indicate that foreground Milky Way stars and background galaxies may comprise as much as 18% and 12%, respectively, of these catalogs. Abstract

We present the deepest, widest color-magnitude diagrams at mid infrared wavelengths ever produced for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The SAGE (Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution) survey of the LMC comprises a seven by seven degree mapping of the entire LMC in each of the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS bands. The present work includes mid and near infrared photometry between 1.25 and 24 microns. These data are used to identify 100's of thousands of red giants and 10's of thousands of asymptotic giant branch stars and supergiants which are classified as oxygen rich, carbon rich, or “extreme” mass losing stars, among others. SAGE will revolutionize the study of evolved stars and mass input into the ISM in the LMC because its deep photometry is sensitive to all significant mass losing sources in the galaxy and provides the context of the overall stellar populations which give rise to the mass losing AGB stars. The SAGE data can be used to help synthesize and assess models of star forming galaxies at high redshift for a range of ages and chemical compositions. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
