Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) triggers tumor ferroptosis. However, most patients are unresponsive to ICB. Tumors might evade ferroptosis in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Here, we discover SLC13A3 is an itaconate transporter in tumor cells and endows tumor ferroptosis resistance, diminishing tumor immunity and ICB efficacy. Mechanistically, tumor cells uptake itaconate via SLC13A3 from tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), thereby activating the NRF2-SLC7A11 pathway and escaping from immune-mediated ferroptosis. Structural modeling and molecular docking analysis identify a functional inhibitor for SLC13A3 (SLC13A3i). Deletion of ACOD1 (an essential enzyme for itaconate synthesis) in macrophages, genetic ablation of SLC13A3 in tumors, or treatment with SLC13A3i sensitize tumors to ferroptosis, curb tumor progression, and bolster ICB effectiveness. This study sought to understand the barriers to and facilitators of diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) referrals and participation from multiple perspectives in New York. Two common barriers emerged: lack of awareness of DSMES services and limited access to DSMES services. Strategies that could improve DSMES referrals and participation include provider education, outreach to eligible patients, and tailoring of DSMES services to meet participants' cultural needs and preferences. Few food waste interventions focus on drivers distinct to particular food groups, such as seafood. Given suggestive evidence that seafood may be wasted at exceptionally high rates, and given its environmental, economic and nutritional value, this research provides insights into seafood-specific consumer food waste interventions. We performed three complementary sub-studies to examine consumer and retailer views regarding seafood waste and frozen seafood as well as perceptions of an intervention providing chef-created recipes to promote cooking frozen seafood without defrosting. The findings indicated an openness to a direct-from-frozen intervention among many consumers and retailers, and suggested seven potential barriers to adoption, along with ways to address them. Underlying the potential for this intervention, and more broadly contributing to addressing consumer seafood waste, the research formed the basis of a new "4 Ps" concept model to characterize the drivers of discarded seafood: proficiency, perceptions/knowledge, perishability, and planning/convenience. These factors shape waste through pathways that include behavioral protocols; taste preferences; waste-prevention efforts; and food safety concerns, precautions, and errors. This research suggested the benefit of testing a larger-scale direct-from-frozen intervention using insights from the concept model and, more broadly, the benefits of exploring approaches to food waste prevention rooted in specific food groups.

Objective: To describe and compare anxiety and depression symptoms between two group patients with neuropathic and nociceptive pain those arrive for first time to a clinic of pain., Methods: Non-experimental, exploratory and descriptive design. Seventy-eight patients that arrive the first time to a clinic of pain were evaluated; those patients were divided in two groups: neuropathic pain with 44 patients and nociceptive pain with 34 patients. To evaluate anxiety and depression we use the Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD), this scale is adapted and validated in Mexico., Results: From the 78 patients in the study, the 76.9% were female and 23.1% were male. The age average was (56.9 +/- 16.8 year-old for neuropathic pain and 63.1 +/- 17.2 year-old for nociceptive pain). The reliability of the scale HAD was evaluated by the Chronbach's alpha analysis with an r = 0.826. There was no significance difference in anxiety and depression between types of pain, but after analyzing all of the patients we found that anxiety was more frequent than depression p < 0.0001., Conclusions: Independently of the algological diagnosis, patients presented almost the same affective symptoms.

Background: In Mexico there are few studies about the psychological characteristics of the person that voluntary and in a complete sense assumes the role of responsible of a patient. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the levels of burden, anxiety and depression of 56 caregivers of patients with chronic pain with the ones of 35 caregivers of terminally ill patients., Methods: The study was conduced at the Chronic Pain and Palliative Medicine Department of the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición "Salvador Zubirán". We used the Spanish version of the Burden Interview and the Informal Primary Caregiver Health Survey., Results: Both groups went over the cut off point of the Burden Scale even though no significative differences between groups were found nor in burden or in anxiety. The caregivers of terminal patients had more depression symptoms and a greater perception of the impact of the care activity in their mood. Positive correlations between burden and depression, depression and anxiety and burden and anxiety were found., Conclusions: All caregivers reported multiple depression symptoms--greater if they cared terminally ill patients--so, it may suggest that the patient's illness directly influences the depression symptoms of their caregivers. This study can help to develop intervention programs directed to help this population that is the principal support of the patient's treatment.

Background: The incidence of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is increasing. Curettage and electrodesiccation (CE) are not recommended for BCC treatment at medium- and high-risk facial sites. Surgical excision has been proposed as the treatment of choice., Objective: We sought to evaluate the cumulative recurrence rate (RR) of primary BCC in facial areas of medium and high risk after CE., Methods: This nonrandomized, clinical trial enrolled 257 patients with primary BCC located in medium- and high-risk facial areas, and treated with 4 or 5 cycles of CE by a single operator from a section specializing in BCC CE in a tertiary teaching hospital in Oviedo, Spain. Exclusion criteria for study entry included: recurrent BCC, fibrosing BCC, ill-defined BCC, and BCC larger than 10 mm in diameter (high-risk facial sites) or larger than 15 mm in diameter (medium-risk sites); BCC smaller than 4 mm; and nonbiopsy-proven BCC. BCCs included in the study were from the nose, and paranasal and nasal-labial fold (n = 105); eyelids and canthi (n = 48); perioral areas (n = 12); ears (n = 11); forehead and temples (n = 48); periauricular areas (n = 14); and malar areas and cheeks (n = 19). The primary outcome was recurrence of carcinoma, which was clinically evaluated by at least two observers in consensus. Data were analyzed using both a life table method and Kaplan-Meier analysis. The statistical analysis included best- and worst-case scenarios (which means that all cases lost to follow-up were considered as recurrences)., Results: The 5-year cumulative non-RR in the best-case scenario was 98.80% (SE 0.70, 95% confidence interval 97.40%-100%); thus, a 5-year cumulative RR of 1.20% was found after CE in our medium- and high-risk BCCs of the face (best case). The 5-year cumulative non-RR in the worst-case scenario was 79.40% (95% confidence interval 78.90%-79.90%); thus, a 5-year cumulative RR of 20.60%., Limitations: Retrospective design with a relatively small number of patients lost to follow-up is a study limitation., Conclusion: High 5-year cure rates can be obtained after CE of primary, nonfibrosing BCCs of medium- and high-risk areas of the face performed in a specialized section.

Fifty-five patients with presumptive macular amyloidosis were investigated for the presence of amyloid in dermal tissue. In twenty-six of these patients the diagnosis could be confirmed by the demonstration of amyloid deposits by optical and/or electron microscopy. In this paper attention is called to the frequency of oligosymptomatic forms of macular amyloidosis, which are often overlooked in spite of the usual existence of itching. These inconspicuous forms are termed "minor macular amyloidosis", and they consist of tenuous brown macules on the upper back, irregularly interspersed with the normal skin and with speckles of whitish discoloration. The diagnosis must be verified by the finding of dermal deposits of amyloid. For that purpose the electron microscopy is a much more reliable procedure than conventional methods or thioflavine T.

A typical clinical and histologic case of so-called 'pagetoid reticulosis' or Woringer-Kolopp disease is reported. This is a chronic cutaneous condition usually with a single focus or at most with a few patches confined to a circumscribed region. A disseminated form has been described as Dupont-Vandaele type, but its relationship to the classic Woringer-Kolopp disease is uncertain. The nosological location of pagetoid reticulosis has not been established, but there are reasons to regard it as a particular and well-defined entity. In relation to the nature of this condition and to the origin of the 'pagetoid cells', it is tempting to consider the possibility that Woringer-Kolopp disease might be a lymphoproliferative epidermotropic disorder, classifiable as a benign form of 'cutaneous T-cell lymphoma', but the early histologic changes are rather indicative of an epidermal origin.

A case of epidemic parotiditis in an adult male affected by Reiter's syndrome, is presented. The symptoms of Reiter's syndrome lasting 3 months after the recovery from epidemic parotiditis. Although descriptions of Reiter's syndrome of viral origin (adenovirus or hepatitis virus) exist, we have not found references of a relation to epidemic parotiditis. The diagnosis criteria of this syndrome is discussed, as well as the study of the epidemic parotiditis. We review the existing theories in order to justify the multiple etiology of this interesting syndrome.
