Abstract

To open up new possibilities to assess the multimodal perceptual quality of omnidirectional media formats, we proposed a novel open source 360 audiovisual (AV) quality dataset. The dataset consists of high-quality 360 video clips in equirectangular (ERP) format and higher-order ambisonic (4th order) along with the subjective scores. Three subjective quality experiments were conducted for audio, video, and AV with the procedures detailed in this paper. Using the data from subjective tests, we demonstrated that this dataset can be used to quantify perceived audio, video, and audiovisual quality. The diversity and discriminability of subjective scores were also analyzed. Finally, we investigated how our dataset correlates with various objective quality metrics of audio and video. 2. Wide Color Gamut Image Content Characterization: Method, Evaluation, and Applications

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a novel framework to characterize a wide color gamut image content based on perceived quality due to the processes that change color gamut, and demonstrate two practical use cases where the framework can be applied. We first introduce the main framework and implementation details. Then, we provide analysis for understanding of existing wide color gamut datasets with quantitative characterization criteria on their characteristics, where four criteria, i.e., coverage, total coverage, uniformity, and total uniformity, are proposed. Finally, the framework is applied to content selection in a gamut mapping evaluation scenario in order to enhance reliability and robustness of the evaluation results. As a result, the framework fulfils content characterization for studies where quality of experience of wide color gamut stimuli is involved.

Abstract

Objective image quality metrics try to estimate the perceptual quality of the given image by considering the characteristics of the human visual system. However, it is possible that the metrics produce different quality scores even for two images that are perceptually indistinguishable by human viewers, which have not been considered in the existing studies related to objective quality assessment. In this paper, we address the issue of ambiguity of objective image quality assessment. We propose an approach to obtain an ambiguity interval of an objective metric, within which the quality score difference is not perceptually significant. In particular, we use the visual difference predictor, which can consider viewing conditions that are important for visual quality perception. In order to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed approach, we conduct experiments with 33 state-of-the-art image quality metrics in the viewpoint of their accuracy and ambiguity for three image quality databases. The results show that the ambiguity intervals can be applied as an additional figure of merit when conventional performance measurement does not determine superiority between the metrics. The effect of the viewing distance on the ambiguity interval is also shown.

6. New challenges in point cloud visual quality assessment: a systematic review.

Abstract

The compression, transmission and rendering of point clouds is essential for many use cases, notably immersive experience settings in eXtended Reality, telepresence and real-time communication where real world acquired 3D content is displayed in a virtual or real scene. Processing and display for these applications induce visual artifacts and the viewing conditions can impact the visual perception and Quality of Experience of users. Therefore, point cloud codecs, rendering methods, display settings and more need to be evaluated through visual Point Cloud Quality Assessment (PCQA) studies, both subjective and objective. However, the standardization of recommendations and methods to run such studies did not follow the evolution of the research field and new issues and challenges have emerged. In this paper, we make a systematic review of subjective and objective PCQA studies. We collected scientific papers from online libraries (IEEE Xplore, ACM DL, Scopus) and selected a set of relevant papers to analyze. From our observations, we discuss the progress and future challenges in PCQA toward efficient point cloud video coding and rendering for eXtended Reality. Main axes for development include the study of use case specific influential factors and the definition of new test conditions for subjective PCQA, and development of perceptual learning-based methods for objective PCQA metrics as well as more versatile evaluation of their performance and time complexity. Abstract

Description: This serves as a pre-registration for the study of executive functioning assessment in virtual reality. Draft summary Virtual reality immerses the individual in a computerised situation in which they can move coherently in space and interact with objects in the virtual environment. Virtual reality is an interesting technology for cognitive assessment because it is more embodied than traditional paper-and-pencil testing situations. Virtual reality is more respectful of the conception of function-based neuropsychology, as opposed to construct-based neuropsychology. Virtual reality also facilitates the tracking of kinematic information on the one hand and the temporal tracking of activities on the other, which can add to the quality of the assessment. This study aims to present three virtual reality environments dedicated to the evaluation of cognitive functions. It also aims to evaluate the relationship between standard paper/pencil and tablet assessments and virtual reality assessments. Based on the results, the discussion will focus on the advantages (or disadvantages) of kinematic tracking and embodied, situated and spatialized tests for cognitive assessment.

Abstract

International audience; Different orientations of rays emitted by a 3D scene are captured in Light field (LF) imaging. In this, spatial along with angular information of the scene is captured. LF offers higher dimensional representation which needs advanced processing such as post-capture refocusing, depth sensing, compression, and reconstruction. These processing methods often induce artifacts as the quality is degraded. So, it is important to understand the mechanism of human visual quality perception to find the optimal performance that maximizes the quality of experience (QoE) of LF. The measurement of this data degradation is possible with the availability of a suitable dataset. In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview and discussion of publicly available LF datasets with emphasis on dataset with subject score. Furthermore, we discuss the current trends and existing challenges in LF dataset creation for QoE.

Abstract

Background: In neuropsychology, fully immersive virtual reality (VR) has been spotlighted as a promising tool. It is considered that VR not only overcomes the existing limitation of neuropsychological tests but is also appropriate for treating executive functions (EFs) within activities of daily living (ADL) due to its high ecological validity. While fully immersive VR offers new possibilities of neuropsychological tests, there are few studies that overview the intellectual landscape and academic trends in the research related to mainly targeted EFs with fully immersive VR. Objective: The objective of this study is to get an overview of the research trends that use VR in neuropsychological tests and to analyze the research trends using fully immersive VR neuropsychological tests with experimental articles. Methods: This review was carried out according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Articles were searched in three web databases using keywords related to VR, EFs, and cognitive abilities. The study was conducted in two steps, keyword analysis and in-depth systematic review. In the web database search from 2000 to 2019, 1167 articles were initially collected, of which 234 articles in the eligibility phase were used to conduct keyword analysis and a total of 47 articles were included for systematic review. Results: In keyword analysis, the number of articles focused on dementia including the keywords "MCI," "SCD," and "dementia" were highlighted over the period, rather than other symptoms. In addition, we identified that the use of behavioral and physiological data in virtual environments (VEs) has dramatically increased in recent studies. In the systematic review, we focused on the purpose of study, assessment, treatment, and validation of usability and structure. We found that treatment studies and uncategorized studies including presence and cybersickness issues have emerged in the recent period. In addition, the target symptoms and range of participants were diversified. Conclusions: There has been a continuously increasing interest in dealing with neuropsychology by using fully immersive VR. Target cognitive abilities have been diversified, as well as target symptoms. Moreover, the concept of embodied cognition was transplanted in this research area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Urban information visualization is an essential tool for decision process in urban planning. Nowadays, more and more urban visualizations incorporate virtual 3D city scenes to better convey spatial and morphological information. On the other hand, the development of consumer grade VR devices as Head Mounted Displays (HMD) enable to visualize urban information with a greater degree of immersion. These new ways to render and display 3D city models may have a significant impact on the perception of urban morphology and, consequently, on the interpretation of the urban visualization. In this paper, we present a subjective experiment to evaluate the impact of visual immersion - field of view, stereoscopy and allocentric or egocentric representations - on the perception of urban morphology and density in 3D city models. Obtained results can be useful to improve urban visualization, but also to better understand perception, user behavior and navigation in 3D virtual environments.

Abstract

International audience; Advances in 3D hardware and software have led to increasingly cheaper and simple-to-use immersive virtual reality systems that can provide real-time interactive 3D data representation. The immersive analytics field is developing as the newest avatar of 3D visual analyt- ics, which may relaunch the long enduring 2D vs 3D visualization debate. However, the terms of the debate have changed: leveraging 3D human perception within virtual environments is now easier, and the immersive quality of today’s rendering is sufficient enough for researchers to concentrate on testing and designing immersive data representation and interaction rather than on technological problems. In this position paper we propose a short historical perspective on the use of immersive technologies for visual analytics and on the 2D vs 3D debate. We stress out five principles that we think should be followed to explore the HMD-based visual analytics design space, before introducing ongoing work within the IDEA project.

Abstract

International audience; The emergence of UHD video format induces larger screens and involves a wider stimulated viewing angle. Therefore, its effect on visual attention can be questioned since it can impact quality assessment, metrics but also the whole chain of video processing and creation. Moreover, changes in visual attention from different viewing conditions challenge visual attention models. In this paper, we present, first, a comparative study of visual attention and viewing behavior, based on eye tracking data obtained in three different viewing conditions (SD-12°, HD-30° and UHD-60°). Then, we present a new video eye tracking database which permits a dynamic analysis of the impact of viewing immersion on visual attentional process in videos.

Abstract

National audience; Plusieurs avancées technologiques ont permis ces dernières années aux constructeurs de proposer des téléviseurs de plus en plus grands, augmentant ainsi l’immersion du téléspectateur. Aujourd’hui, le nouveau format vidéo Ultra Haute Définition (UHD) se caractérise principalement par une augmentation de la résolution d’image de l’HD (1980x1080) vers le 4K (3840x2160) ou le 8K (7680x4320) qui permet, selon l’Union International des Télécom (ITU), d’aller encore plus loin dans l’augmentation de la taille des téléviseurs [1]. Par ailleurs, l’ITU définit la distance de visualisation optimale comme la distance minimale à laquelle l’utilisateur ne distingue plus deux lignes différentes espacées d’un pixel à l’écran. Cette distance est directement proportionnelle à la hauteur de l’écran (H) ; elle est fixée à 6H en SD, 3H en HD et 1,5H en UHD- 4K [2]. Ces nouvelles conditions de visualisation s’accompagnent donc d’une augmentation du champ visuel stimulé par la vidéo (Figure 1), et, par conséquent, pourraient modifier la manière dont le téléspectateur porte son regard sur la scène visuelle, ce que nous proposons d’évaluer dans ce travail.Dans cet article, nous présentons, dans un premier temps, un travail visant à étudier l’influence de la variation de l’angle visuel stimulé sur le déploiement de l’attention visuelle dans des vidéos, par comparaison de trois jeux de données d’oculométrie préexistants, obtenus dans des conditions de visualisation différentes (SD-12°, HD-30° et UHD-60°). Nous présentons ensuite une nouvelle base de données d’oculométrie obtenue en visionnant les mêmes contenus selon deux angles de vue différents (33° et 62°). Cette nouvelle base permet des analyses fines et dynamiques de l’influence de l’immersion visuelle sur les processus attentionnels mis en œuvre dans le visionnage de vidéos.

Abstract

International audience; Virtual reality thanks to immersion and interaction is a good tool to assess urban environments. Allowing users to freely navigate in the virtual environment, virtual reality permits to take into account the influence of dynamic elements and the observers’ actions in the perception of urban spaces. However, previous works have shown that virtual assessments of urban projects are mainly based on visual experience. Thus, the multisensory perception of the actual environment is biased. In order to tackle this issue, we propose to focus on climatic ambiances, which are dynamic and multisensory. Moreover some studies have shown the importance of these factors in the appropriation of an urban space whereas they are very seldom integrated in virtual evaluations. This paper presents a new methodology to delineate urban climatic ambiances in virtual environments which respects the following points: understanding and perception of climatic ambiances by non-experts, sensitive evaluation of the urban space, presence in the virtual scene and perceptual fidelity of the virtual environment. Then we apply this methodology to design ten virtual scenes with climatic effects. These scenes have been assessed in a perceptual experiment involving 42 participants. This experiment helps to improve our knowledge of perception in virtual environments in order to improve or propose new cues for sensitive climatic suggestion in VR.

Abstract

International audience; Virtual reality has been proved to be a good tool to communicate visual urban ambiances thanks to immersion and interaction. Our work consists in extending this use for a multisensory delineation and assessment of cities. We focus on the microclimatic ambiances and we discuss two approaches for their representation: the physical stimuli simulation and an evocative audio-visual world relied on perception knowledge and artistic practices.
