Despite receiving more attention and obtaining a well-established status in second language (L2) teaching research during the last three decades, L2 pragmatics remains an excluded topic in English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching in many investigated contexts. Adopting a qualitative case study design, this paper examines what seven EFL teachers from different Vietnamese high schools perceive about L2 pragmatics and instructional pragmatics and reflect on their teacher preparation programs in these regards. The findings reveal that the participating teachers were not taught about L2 pragmatics and instructional pragmatics during their professional education, resulting in their little content and pedagogical knowledge of L2 pragmatics. This leads to their general exclusion of L2 pragmatics teaching in their classroom practices. The uncovered stories from these teachers provide essential implications for teacher education programs in Vietnam and its similar contexts. Importantly, they add more understanding to the relationship of teachers’ knowledge and their practices of L2 pragmatics teaching, a current understudied research area with specific reference to teacher cognition of L2 pragmatics. It is universally acknowledged that project-based learning (PBL) plays a fundamental role in language teaching and the learning process. In some developed countries with advanced education, PBL has been applied to language teaching and learning widely and effectively. However, in the context of Vietnam, PBL is unlikely to be viewed as an integral approach to enhance students’ self-directed abilities in their learning. This paper aimed at investigating EFL high school students’ attitudes towards PBL when they implemented PBL with the new English textbooks at Bui Thi Xuan High School in Vietnam. This study involved one hundred and fifty-five EFL high school students in answering the questionnaire and forty students in responding to semi-structured interview questions. The quantitative data were processed by SPSS in terms of descriptive statistics (means, standard deviation, and frequency), and content analysis was used for analyzing the qualitative data. The findings of the study showed that EFL high school students expressed positive attitudes (i.e. cognition, affection, and behavior) toward PBL. The data from the semi-structured interview were coded and analyzed to make the results of the study clearer. These preliminary findings are hoped to contribute to a better understanding of the current perspectives of applying PBL into language learning in the Vietnamese context so that practical implications should be made in order to enhance the quality of teaching in English language education in Da Lat specifically and Vietnam in general.

This paper aimed to scrutinize English majors' perceptions of autonomous learning skills and explore whether or not their writing skills improved after a 15-week writing course with the employment of an e-portfolio as a learning tool. This mixed-methods study involved thirty-five English majors at a Vietnamese university in doing the mid-term test and final test and reporting their writing progress as well as their autonomous learning in the writing logs throughout the course and during the individual semi-structured interviews. The quantitative data were statistically processed using SPSS in terms of descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon signed rank test, and the data obtained from the interviews and writing logs were analyzed through the content analysis approach. The findings indicated the significant improvement in the English majors' writing skills. Furthermore, the participants had positive attitudes toward the autonomous learning skills (e.g., setting learning goals, choosing learning materials, creating a study plan, writing reflections, and conducting peer assessment) except for the hesitation in conducting selfassessment during the training course. Recent decades have witnessed extensive research focusing on oral corrective feedback (CF), a key aspect of English as a second/foreign language (ESL/EFL) learning and teaching, but relatively little research has examined the relationship between learner and teacher beliefs about CF. The study reported in this article investigated the relationship between teacher and learner beliefs regarding the optimal targets and sources of CF in Vietnamese secondary EFL contexts. Data which were collected at four Vietnamese public high schools included questionnaires completed by 250 students, interviews with 15 of them, and interviews with 24 teachers. The findings showed that the students were happy to receive CF to all types of errors, including less important errors such as those not influencing their communicative success. The teachers were generally more selective in their choices of error types, but they sometimes faced some tensions between their overall teaching objective and the students' practical needs to learn the material that would be tested in subsequent exams. Regarding CF sources, the students preferred teacher correction to self-correction or peer correction although they believed that self-correction was effective for their learning and wished their teachers would provide them with training on how to conduct peer correction and self-correction. The teachers also thought that it was part of their role to be the main CF providers to ensure the accuracy of classroom feedback. Some teachers were skeptical about their students' ability to provide peer CF. Pedagogical implications are discussed.

It is widely acknowledged that language learning strategies (LLSs) are beneficial to learners’ academic achievements, learner autonomy and motivation; however, it is indicated that Vietnamese students, particularly high school students have found it hard to employ LLSs. This paper aims at exploring language learning strategies used by high school students and underlying reasons at a high school located in Ho Chi Minh City. The study involved 238 EFL high school students in responding to a closed-ended questionnaire and twenty of them in answering the semi-structured interview questions. The quantitative data collected from the questionnaire were processed by SPSS version 25.0 in terms of descriptive statistics, and the qualitative data were analyzed by the content-based approach. The results of the study indicated the EFL high school students’ moderate use of LLSs. Remarkably, metacognitive strategies were the most commonly used category, compared to memory strategies – the least employed category. The findings may serve as a guideline for EFL teachers on facilitating high school students’ English language learning. It is also hoped that the results of this study may contribute to the literature about English language learning strategies in EFL contexts.

The global trends in the 21st century language learning and teaching have promoted interpersonal communication. Recently, there has been a high demand for learning tools which increase learners' motivation and participation with a focus on communicative competence. This paper aims to explore English majors' attitudes towards the application of videos in the Business Communication (BC) course at a Vietnamese university. It also explores the students' favorite learning activities employed during the course. There were 125 third-year English majors participating in the mix-methods research in which both quantitative and qualitative data were collected for an in-depth analysis through the employment of a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The findings showed that the participants held a positive attitude (i.e., cognition, emotion, and behavior) toward a video-based Business Communication (VBC) course. As for favourite learning activities, furthermore, collaborative learning activities (e.g., group discussion, role-play, and conversation) tended to be preferred over individual-focused ones (e.g., oral presentation and story-telling).
